  • Bomberman 64: The Second Attack!, known in Japan as Baku Bomberman 2 (爆ボンバーマン2 Baku Bonbāman Tsū, "Explosive Bomberman 2"), is an action video game, the sequel to Bomberman 64 released in 1997. The game was not released in Europe.

Bomberman 64 the second attack review on the nintendo 64. Recorded using an Ultra HDMI modded N64 console with an Elgato game capture HD capture card using a real game cartridge.
Does this retro nostalgic game fall into your top 5 or top 10 N64 games? What do you think if the music or soundtrack in the game? Do you prefer this or Bomberman arcade, bomberman 64 or bomberman hero?

He's based directly on both of them, Pommy describes himself as a mimic which is very similar to Kirby conceptually and explains why he has so many forms.
Later games give Pommy inherent Electric abilities, so thats when the Pikachu part factors in aside from his ears.

My childhood... This is hands down my favorite Bomberman game! Was planning on buying the first one back in the day after renting it, but EB didn't have it. So I decided to take The Second Attack home! Was not disappointed. Story was awesome, and Multiplayer battles got intense on Saturday nights! Glad to still have my copy after all this time, never getting rid of it. Prices are ridiculously high, but you can't put a price on memories.

If you don't mind me asking, do you remember how much you paid for it back in the day? Seeing as it's crazy expensive now. I paid $70 for mine in 2013, and to me it's worth every penny.

    • @WrecklessNostalgia
      @WrecklessNostalgia Před 6 lety +2

$70 is pretty good considering I've seen them going for $100+ nowadays. The sticker on the back of my carts ripped and faded so i can't give you a exact price, but I bought my copy around 2003 or 2004 when N64 games were getting pretty cheap. I think I paid $10 to $12 for it used. If only we had those prices today lol.

Wow, that's incredible. I'm sure it'll continue to go up (as game prices always do) and one day we'll be looking back at how cheap $115 was for this game way back in 2017.

Sadly, I cannot go back to those awesome 1980s, 1990s, 2000s that I lived through as a kid, teenager and young adult unless I can get a Time Travel ability like in A Christmas Carol to view it only.

This might be my favorite Bomberman game. Although I love all of the N64 ones.
The soundtrack was overall quite wonderful. I think the same person who composed the music for Chrono Trigger worked on this.
The single player was pretty solid! I enjoy the story and Pommy was a fun addition to the game. Also the elemental bombs were super cool! My friend and I used to play co-op on this fairly often. It was less challenging overall than 64, but there were some parts that I found to be really frustrating. I would get stuck in a few of the gravity generator rooms, because the camera wasn't obvious enough with where certain things were located, in my opinion. Certain enemies could actually mess with your control and cause you to fall off the level and die. Thank goodness they did away with the gold card collecting.
It might be in my top 10 N64 games.

Pommy does become pretty useful if you do keep investing in him. Eventually he'll be able to do tons of damage which helps to clear rooms of normal enemies while you focus on puzzles and other things.
I also disagree on the multiplayer, on paper all the modes are great, but having cross shaped bombs in a 3d environment doesn't work well at all in my experience.

Great review, I actually like Pommy though, he's unfortunately useless in his first form, shame because it's my favorite, but he becomes decent in his level 2 forms, good in his level 3 forms, and excellent in level 4 forms.
I may have gotten more out of him though since I played the game in co-op with another person.
I only dream we'll get a game that takes the best aspects of this game and the original Bomberman 64 and puts them together for one awesome title, but with the franchise under Konami atm thats not likely.
You should try Bomberman Generation and it's follow-up Bomberman Jetters on the gamecube both are good times with the former being one of the best Bomberman games period imo, Generation's Adventure mode plays like a streamlined version of the original 64, it kind of bugs you at first especially since Dr.Ein keeps backseat gaming for you throughout areas, but the more you play it the more you learn to appreciate the game's design and it really starts to come into it's own, hard to explain properly.

Lets see. Yup I did let my sister play the game with me having her play as pommy she eventually got bored because the camera didn't always show her on the screen, her fault not mine >XD. I loved when my pommy eventually became a Knight and still acted like the biggest coward when boss fights came up, but at least now it could damage stuff . . . if I gave it 5 years to chase and swing that large sword. But that was what the Evo down or w/e it is called was for.
Surprised you didn't mention how the story actually has two endings depending on how a certain fight goes and if you got all the elemental stones or not. One thing I didn't like about the game was the amount of times I ended up dying and then had to redo THE ENTIRE FRICKIN LEVEL or maybe not the entire level but I do believe you go back to the start, I think with everything still done. I remember beating Mihaele and then dying in the lava room afterwords because my ice bombs blast radius was too big and proceeded to slowly kill me.
I was kinda disappointed there was a lack non-humanoid enemies the closest it ever got was the 'final' boss and the FINAL boss; but even they still had a human like appearance.
Overall I did enjoy the game but it wasn't something I went back to that often, if at all, after I fully completed it. Mainly because my friends liked Bomberman 64's multiplayer more, can't say I agreed.

Interesting. I hadn't seen this one in action before. I wasn't a big fan of the original for its large departure in play style compared to the prior classic Bomberman games. @antenna_prolly Před 2 lety

I thought it was just, arm pieces gave permanent free Power Glove and leg pieces gave permanent free Kick, and while the Guardian Armor *is* the story mode equivalent of Customs, Custom head and body didn't seem to do anything...
but either way, don't forget you needed a Memory Pak to even use Customs in Battle, which made it a weird, early version of imbalancing DLC.

  • @antenna_prolly
    @antenna_prolly Před 2 lety

There are a number of small inaccuracies (but you review a ton of games so it's understandable), but one note is, King & Knights doesn't make a player the King; it's the _team battle_ mode for 2v2 or 1v3 (or 1v2), where each team has a set number of lives (1, 3, or 5) and killing an opponent will cost them one life, but killing their King will cost them three lives. The Kings were static NPCs that you can pick up and carry or throw to safety (or death), much like a stunned opponent, and the first _Bomberman 64_ had Team Battle as a second mode which was very similar, but instead of a king, it was a jewel, I don't think it could be lifted (only destroyed), and players' deaths didn't count against their team.

You can now play Bomberman 64: The Second Attack on Raspberry Pi 4 console.
To the Bomberman fans and N64 Glenn Plant. You're probably aware of how ridiculously expensive and rare Bomberman 64 sequel cartridge is on the Amazon, Ebay market. Did you know that you can now play it on the Raspberry Pi 4 console with the SD Card RetroArch, Retropie which includes Bomberman 64 sequel.
When Bomberman 64 and Bomberman Hero came out on the Nintendo Wii and Wii U console I was excited and hoped that Hudson would put Bomberman 64: The Second Attack on the Wii U virtual console. Sadly they never did and there's no announcement for it getting ported on the Nintendo Switch.
So as for the performance of Bomberman 64: The Second Attack on the Raspberry Pi 4, I'm kind of feel mixed and frustrated because sometimes the game glitches and my joystick doesn't respond and the game suffers from severe slowdowns and once in a while the game crashes. I'm sad I wasn't ever able to get the official N64 cartridge like I was with Bomberman 64, Bomberman Hero. You can play it on Raspberry Pi 4. But it doesn't always work perfectly.

Well I grew up playing Bomberman 64 and Bomberman hero I've never ever play Bomberman the second attack I just played it on the emulator a couple days ago it is pretty cool but it's frustrating playing it on the emulator cuz the joystick will stop working and making it so I can only move up or down and I have to use the d-pad which makes it harder when you go into a room with a diagonal camera angle and some of the object you destroy to get items will be invisible I am having fun with it I just wish the emulator can play it better

This is one of the more expensive and rare N64 games out there. I'd LOVE to have a copy of this and will probably get one eventually, at least I hope. The price of a lot of N64 games has been dropping recently, with the onslaught of reproduction carts invading eBay...
The only Bomberman game I had as a kid was "Bomberman Hero" and I wasn't the biggest fan of it. It wasn't that the game played bad or anything. It was a little difficult for me at the time but I did get pretty far into it (never beat the "final" boss). The thing that made me not like it that much was Bomberman had a voice that made him sound like a girl when he got hit by anything...and for some reason that just turned me off of the game. It doesn't bother me a ton now that i'm older, but I just find it odd that something so insignificant could turn me off to a game like it did...

I never played this one nor Hero for some reason. I rather enjoyed the first Bomberman 64 quite a lot, and also remember some of the frustrations to go with it. My first foray into the Bomberman world was the crossover Wario/Bomberman title on the GB. I don't remember the name, but I played it a ton and my interest in the series grew from Bomberman's first outing on the N64. Don't know why I never picked this one up, but I believe I now will. On a side note, the Bomberman game that came out on the XB360 almost killed the franchise. It was awful. Glad to see the Switch bring it back to it's roots

I got it a couple years ago before it sky rocketed and promptly traded it back in. It just felt slow and kind of boring to me. Maybe should have given it a bit more of a chance(at worst, would have been nice to make a couple bucks off it), but considering it was still 3 times the price of Bomberman 64, I think I'd rather have that game.

  • @barry-allenthe-flash8396

I think I was, like, 14 or 15 when this came out. Got it for $20 or less from a Electronics Boutique/Gamestop that was desperate to get rid of their N64 games at the time; picked it up with a memory card in some sort of Gamestop blister pack. They packaged a lot of their N64 games like that at the time (I also remember seeing Neo Geo Pocket Colors bundled with games like that, also on clearance, and curse myself to this day for not picking one up like that), and I remember getting this along with a few other games, like Duke Nukem Zero Hour and Goemon's Great Adventure (now THAT'S a classic, right there! Hope you get to that one eventually; its so fantastic). I found 2nd Attack a bit boring, tbh. I do remember enjoying it enough with my sister, but I never felt compelled to even finish it. Its real slow-paced, both because of Bomberman's walk speed and the slower pace of the design, not to mention the lackluster frame rate. It was hard to feel too engaged in the Adventure Mode for me. I never picked up B64 back in the day either - I only actually played that one relatively recently via the Virtual Console - and so Second Attack represents my only legit N64 Bomberman experience.
I mostly remember being baffled back then as to why it looked worse than Bomberman 64, and I stick to that opinion, though your point about the engine probably explains it. Don't get me wrong; the artists were reaching for an improved look, and the textures & models ARE more detailed (especially Bomberman, who has an actual model now instead of being a collection of sphere sprites), but everything runs slow and just has this murky, muddy, blurry look that was super disappointing to see on the N64 in 1999 or 2000 or whatever. The higher quality assets coupled with the older tech just create too many problems and I didn't dig its look. It definitely needed a newer, or more optimized engine, as well as another pass or 2 with regards to color balance and contrast. Compared to Bomberman 64, which admittedly has less detailed textures, but looks "cleaner" because they're simpler (not to mention boasts a more vibrant color palette), Second Attack definitely looks worse in my opinion. Its almost like comparing Sonic Adventure to Shadow the Hedgehog; there's just a muddy dark grittiness to too many of the visuals in Second Attack. Like, look at the dirty Subway and City areas at 4:34 and 4:51 in your video - its just weird to see in a Bomberman game.
I did really appreciate the cinematic camera angles though; framing the action like every screen was a diorama or whatever. It made it really playable. Playing Bomberman 64 on the Wii U proved that game's free-rotating camera to be a bit of a nightmare by comparison. I do remember really digging the multiplayer though; you're right about that! Playing Bomberman 64 on the Virtual Console, and seeing this review, did make me want to replay Second Attack and give it another shot though. My sis has got the N64 these days though ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
'Nother great N64 review, man! Thanks for the shot of nostalgia! Your vids always rule (^v^)
