- Would you believe it if I told you there is a game that plays like Trackmania on the N64? Well maybe you shouldn't because I've never played it. However, that's how I feel Stunt Racer 64 plays.

The number and variety of characters makes me think of back in high school, when everybody wanted to be either a video game producer or anime creator, but all we wanted to do was create characters, none of the boring stuff like backgrounds or coding physics etc. Feel like the character designer for this game finally got his dream job only for it to be for a Blockbuster exclusive racing oriented game but he was still like "Eff it, I'm making a zillion OCs anyway"
*(hands in 3 double spaced pages per character, for individual backstories)*
Department head:
"Johnson! Cut it down to a single paragraph. Double spaced!"
So true, I thought something similar XD
This is probably the smoothest racing game we've seen so far. Also some of the best animated; that dancing rabbit had actual secondary motion.
The render distance in this game is actually hella impressive
This is one of the better looking N64 games
Whats Hella? In this game its actually Mad impressive thats how u say it
Carmaggedon 64 has unlimited draw distance. Everything is rendered at once all the time.
Runs hella smooth too.
@@dannysandoval1034its a San Francisco thing
@dannysandoval1034 In Massachusetts you'd say "wicked impressive"
In the space level, you were driving on the planet's rings, of course. Ya know like Saturn?
Yeah, I was also gonna comment on that
One of my favorite parts of the series is seeing which game is next
I ain't gonna lie I always wanna a see what's next first then I watch the video lol
SAME!!!
I make a guess at what the next number will be
I love the concern in Thabs voice each time he reads the number for the next game...."Number (insert number)....what's that?!"
YER IN THE ZONE
This was Boss Studio’s tech at its most polished. Shame it only went to Blockbuster. It looks great for N64.
I swear I remember playing this as a kid or atleast seeing it un blockbuster
I really don't like 'difficulty' settings that prohibit you from properly finishing the game. If an 'easy' mode doesn't allow you to finish, it should simply be called 'practice' difficulty and leave it at that lol
What about if it just doesn’t let you get the best ending? (Like, maybe you still “save the day”, but with some caveats)
"A space energy path" lol aka a planet's rings
Thab! Stop apologising when you miss a week's upload. This task is monumental and if someone can't get by without their weekly upload, they need more hobbies.
Well said 👏
"It's like the back end is heavier than the front." That's how we like 'em. 😄
Thab: Does this Z-Bucket come with you, Strawberry?
Strawberry: Tee hee, oh you!
The track texture blurring when gaining speed looks modern and impressive, really sells the sense of speed. A great looking N64 game.
Cowgirl is 6’3” 116 lbs? Daaaaaaang
Damn LOL, your attention to the attention to details is hilarious! Damn near should be 5'3"!
Wow, this game looks sooo good for an n64 game, like, with better resolution it could be a PS2 game! Running at a solid 30fps! no dips! Very well made.
What are you smoking better than a PS2 game!? 😂
That looks more like 45 fps or higher
@@syncmonism the video has a quality setting for 720p48fps, might be what it runs at natively(?) (and then entire video rendered in 60 also)
@@frenchie0800well there were plenty of garbage PS2 games
@@frenchie0800 not "Better" i said With Better Resolution" it *could* be a ps2 game. The polygons in the models and terrain are very high, and there is no texture warping or seams. ThaB even admitted the physics feel like "Test Track" which is a very advanced game to compare it too. It makes sense when he says that this was one of the last games to be released on the system, it shows.
The back stories were quite fun to read. So glad you didn't cut them in the video beast!
This channel is so cozy and chill. So many channels are obnoxious and jarring.
Man you made me feel better about myself when you said it took you 6 or 7 tries to get through the qualifying. I just ordered a copy to add to my blockbuster collection, slowly getting all the N64 games I like with "property of blockbuster" stickers on them and documenting the journey on my youtube channel. I felt so silly earlier making a video about stuntracer and having such a hard time beating the qualifying lap, it took me about 8 tries to do it. Makes sense why I only remember one snowy level from the weekend I rented the game as a kid. lol
fun fact about the unlockables: they're both references to previous N64 games Boss Game Studios worked on. the milk truck was an unlockable in Top Gear Rally and the Twisted Edge is based off Twisted Edge Snowboarding
"Kid Cola, more like kid.... ..... noob"
Scathing...
"Major Evil."
"Its Doctor Evil, actually. I didn't go to evil medical school for 8 frickin years not to be called doctor, ok?"
I never realized this was a Blockbuster exclusive. I remember renting it once or twice, I should have kept it!
This game seems ahead of it’s time. This has some current Gen Mariokart vibes
Unfortunately there was a bug in the game. It was that spider. It was in the game when they printed the cartridge, so that spider is actually real.
Toad really fell off after Mario...lol
I found this in a local pawn shop around 2002. I had enough money to buy just 1 game & I chose this & a big N64 memory card over Super Mario 64. I think someone had lost the cartridge after renting it from Blockbuster, then sold it after finding it again. I had zero idea that it was a rental-only game or how valuable it would be nowadays.
There are more solid racers on the 64 than i thought. Good stuff. Can't wait for another nba in the zone. I feel like your sports game vids are some of the funniest
I bet you could stump akinator with all the obscure OCs they created for this game lol
I dont know why, my favorite moment of his videos is him saying "whats that?" after reading out the next random number.
Great video. Love seeing the racing game videos.
2:58 wait hol up, Cowgirl is 6'3" and 116 lbs? Are her bones hallow?
Hallowed bones?
Toad looks like the snarling/sneezing alien from Men in Black.
The track bit in the space level is Saturn's rings
16:39 it's a ring of a planet lol
My favorite part was when he drove by the "space energy path" XD
Every time I see one of these pop up on CZcams I get excited. Keep up the great work!
great series. nostalgic, good narrative, and perfect length video
These videos are my Saturday morning cartoons. Thanks stoner dude for doing these. Can't wait for WWF No Mercy.
I owned this back in the day, wish I never got rid of it for its value
I love and appreciate these videos!
I remember seeing like an entire wall of these at Blockbuster and not thinking a thing of it. I really like that cast of racers and the backstories.
I admire your devotion.
Did you try HI-REZ Letterboxed - mode?
-It runs just as smooth as low rez.(Like WDC, that uses the same graphics engine).
Overall, this game has really good atmostphere, almost SNES like feel while playing it.
It also offers similar semi-arcade concept as Wave Race 64, where stunts are not required, they are rather additional fun/challenge for more advanced players.
Very solid game. It is a true shame that this was not really available, while rubbish games like GT64 are so easy to find everywhere.
Thanks to these videos, its always a good Friday!
Never played it, but this game looks super nice and runs well, reminds me a bit of Hotwheels Turbo Racing, but it seems like it has more content to it. I wouldve loved this game as a kid.
I would probably not have found this game had you not played it.
I'm going to need to find myself a copy of this somewhere!
A space energy path?! The rings of the planet. lol Like Saturn.
thank you!!! great series, my favorite!
Best series on youtube hands down.
Right when he said, "Kid Cola? More like..." He got interrupted by a Pepsi ad
He has no idea what's waiting for him until he tries to beat Hybrid Heaven lol.
Goodluck.
I just read every characters' backstory from pausing your video. The nazi joke at the start of Major Evil's bio cracked me up, and also Leatherette's bio, who must be a sadist, because it mentions she skins people alive. According to a google search of the manual, The dev who created all these characters was Rob “3:16" Stevens. Why does the guy have a psalm in his name?
Honestly 1000 hours for 125~games is pretty impressive
What a fun-looking game!
….and I never heard of it.
There’s real love put into it by the dev’s.
Anybody else feel like Kid Kola bore a striking resemblance to Thab!? 😂. You the best man!
@thabeast721 thee (?) question mark power-ups would definitely have to be that upon collection it opens and or closes a different way to go on the track/gains access to shortcuts/chain shortcuts (like one opens another)
Love the series!
Hopefully one day I can get a working rom of this game. I remember playing it as a tot and getting seriously frustrated that I couldn't beat a certain boss, then one morning before school I fired it up and whooped him first try, so happy with myself and the day went on fabulously. Knew nothing about Blockbuster exclusives at the time or else I would've asked to buy a copy when they were being sold off.
Seems liked a fun play through
I had the joy of playing this when i was young had a very cool vibe way ahead of its time
I can't wait for Road Rash!
I have never been more invested in a series. Keep it up man, thanks for the uploads! Does anyone know why on the list, there are so many duplicates? Different versions of the same game or something?
There are a lot of sports titles on the N64, so he lists everyone they comes out and then plays those ones in release order.
The game switches to "high res" mode during replays, that is from 320x240 normal res to 512x240 letterboxed in a 640x480 interlaced output. That is why you got severe letterboxing during replays; oh, and the game has a resolution option where you can choose either resolution during the race, replays will be always displayed in high res tough.
No better feeling than seeing an episode pop up 😁
I hope we're all having good Friday!
Good Friday is at Easter...
Sick right now. But this helps
Great way to start a Friday. Love the video. Now I just need 1000 dollars for a physical copy
Man, I would have loved this game if I had it as a kid. Shame it was a Blockbuster exclusive. My favourite thing about this series is seeing all the hidden gems I would have never known about otherwise.
I remember playing stunt racer on my Commodore 64 and in the local game shop called the computer cabin on an Amiga
Amazing how few of the racers you can choose from to play as
oh yeah, forgot that this guy plays Mario Maker as well.
i will be picking this one up. somehow i missed this as a kid!
My day is alwaysvbetter when there is an N64 challenge video upload.
The king of Friday morning entertainment delivers again.
Yay I’m glad this was picked for me again I enjoy these 😂😊
This game is amazing!
Re: Heats
It appears that you're choosing *who to race against* when choosing heats, as you'll have to race both anyway as you noted.
I myself ended up getting atleast a top 10 time in all 104 full game dadish categories on main boards, throughout the 3 dadish games, 46 of those being current WR im happy with doing that, also 5 different wwe wrestling games where every category ive done is 1st or 2nd.
7:46 BUUUUUUUURNED
I myself started doing a challenge where itry to beat every game i own i started on may 16th, and ive already beat 55 out of 60 of my games, that feels exciting to me im only 5 away although i haven't really been doing the challenge lately few days, mainly because i been busy getting WRS in games, but ill start trying again soon.
...Space Energy Path? bro its the rings of a planet lmao
“The robot shoots steam onto the track”. That’s not steam my dude 😂
Good looking game!
I saw there was a "resolution" option in the pause menu. Did you ever try that? (Maybe I missed it at the start.) Also, given the weird "numbering" of the drivers, I wonder if each stage is randomly populated (other than the boss).
This game was developed by Boss Studios, the same guys who made World Driver Championship also on the N64. I suppose it uses the same engine as WDC so that resolution option should work the same, it increases the rendering resolution from 320x240 to 512x240 and then letterboxed in a 640x480 interlaced video output. Actually even if you chose the "normal" resolution all replays are always displayed in "high res" mode.
A strong point of this one is that it runs very well. Seems a solid 30fps. Other than Automobili Lamborghini and Ridge Racer, I don't know if any other racer featuring cars that does this.
Stunt Racer is kind of a Kart racer in drag, but still.
Edit: Top Gear Rally 1 and 2 are also good 30fps, also Overdrive isn't bad if you turn hi-res completely off.
Childhood memories right here
Where is the ocarina of time drop? I saw the stream but haven’t seen the vid. Did something happen with it?
reminds me of Wipeout a bit (the flips / barrel rolls off jumps i guess).
16:33 space station silicon valley reference
Nice review! I'm waiting on you playing f-zero x it's the best 😉👍
12:29 Australia’s rubbing off on you
You seem like a real nice dude
Guile as a ghoul... nice.
WOOOOO FRIDAY BOYS
I have been waiting months for Da Ape content
Is there a multiplayer in the game? I remember playing some game like this with friends where we did stunts on some multiplayer maps. I've been trying to remember what game that that is
I didnt know stunt racer was on the n64😮 on the amiga stunt racer was my favorite game!
No Jumpin' Jim Rivers? Not the racing game for me.
once he plays the NBA on NBC (showtime) also midway had a hand in it- he is really going to have a great time- very acrady like nfl blitz but super super fun
I remember that game as a kid
Great
Does anyone know what the question mark power-up is for?
