  • Banjo-Tooie is a platform video game developed by Rare and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo 64. It was first released on 20 November 2000 in North America and on 12 April 2001 in Europe, and later re-released as an Xbox Live Arcade game for the Xbox 360 on 29 April 2009. It is the second instalment in the Banjo-Kazooie series and serves as a sequel to the original Banjo-Kazooie. The story of the game follows series protagonists Banjo and Kazooie as they attempt to stop the plans of antagonist Gruntilda and her two sisters from vapourising the inhabitants of the game's world.

    Banjo Tooie review on the nintendo 64. Recorded using an Ultra HDMI modded N64 console with an Elgato game capture HD capture card using a real game cartridge.
    Does this retro nostalgic game fall into your top 5 or top 10 N64 games? What do you think if the music or soundtrack in the game? Do you prefer this or banjo kazooie? were you looking forward to Banjo Threeie? Does anyone ever read the description tab anymore? Who knows, maybe i am talking to myself. So Super mario 64 is pretty good hey?

    Banjo Tooies biggest weakness comes from not utilizing the Expation Pak. It would give the console more RAM to store and potensially improve the framerate

    Banjo-Kazooie is great because it is simplistic, pure fun, and charmingly humorous. As Banjo-Tooie is much more complex, story-driven, and challenging. This is not a bad thing in my opinion, I do love a good challenge. But it's also understandable that people prefer the original, because of it's simplicity and happier atmosphere. But Rareware knew how to make a sequel. Banjo-Tooie is bigger, graphically better, and has more stuff to do. Including, new moves, characters, and collectables/ items. As Banjo Kazooie has a much happier atmosphere, Banjo Tooie's is gloomy, yet colourful. The music though, is not as memorable as Banjo Kazooie, even when they're both composed by the legendary Grant Kirkhope, but nonetheless, still fantastic. I love Banjo Tooie almost as much as Banjo Kazooie, and Banjo Tooie is very much recommended if you like the first one.

      I really loved Banjo-Kazooie, but going back and playing it now, collecting a lot of the Jiggies feels a little mechanical compared to collecting Power Stars in Super Mario 64. Still, I'm enjoying my current play-through; the game is delightful on many levels.
      I played Tooie way back in the day when it released in the United States, and I felt really disappointed by it at the time. Granted, I was pretty depressed at that stage in my life. Still, many of the things that tantalized me in the first game, like the mythical Ice Key, became these relatively unceremonious collectibles in Tooie. Yes, I know they had greater plans for them that were foiled by the flop of the 64DD, but I really wish Rare could have done more to stir our imaginations and make a more fulfilling experience.
      Also, while Tooie's graphics were incredible for the console on a technical level, I really preferred the aesthetic of the first game.
      I still look forward to playing through Tooie again someday soon. Maybe I'll change my mind a bit when I look at it with fresh eyes, but until then I have to say that it was a decent experience for me, but not a great one like its predecessor. But I can understand why others may love it or even prefer it over the original.

    I was only six and it was the years where my sister's brag me to get a console they want, which was either the xbox and the ps2. I was only little child and i had no clue which one to choose. Of course, my mom and dad told them to let me choose, since it was my birthday. Surprisingly, i looked at the Green Congo verison that included the Donkey Kong 64. It caught my attention more then the ps2 and the xbox. So i pointed at it and told my parents. They agreed and i was able choose 2 games for free from the local gaming store, because they were closing down. So i picked Banjo Kazooie and Banjo Tooie. My sister laughed thinking i picked the same game. I ignored them and told my parents that i want those 2 games. When i first played them, i realised they were the same, but were both different. Soon at the age 8, i realised Banjo tooie is the sequel to Banjo Kazooie. I still have them, and play them sometimes. I still never beat them because of school and work, but I'll try to play them when i have time.

  • @Venomous9
    @Venomous9 Před 6 lety +32

    Banjo-Tooie is my favourite game of all time on the merits of its worldbuilding. Gruntilda's Lair was amazing and built up each level amazingly, but that's just the thing: they were disparate levels that just felt too disconnected from each other. The Isle o' Hags, however, felt like a complete interconnected world, especially since you could warp between each world except for Cloud Cuckooland, which took place above every other world. That whole concept just blew my mind when I was younger. Also, each level just felt more fleshed out in and of themselves, and the fact that you had every single move from the first game was just so damn convenient and good as well. I also hated the Note Score system in Kazooie, so I'm glad they scrapped it in Tooie, and while I understand the 360 version removed it entirely, I can't be arsed rebuying it for that alone.

      Great post. I agree with the sentiment of the interconnected world building. It blew my mind when that first happened in Glitter Gulch Mind and yet again when I saw Gobi and Bogi's family in Witchy World. The charm of the first game made me really care about helping those NPC's. The Banjo Kazooie/Banjo Tooie relationship is similar to the Ocarina of Time/Majora's Mask dynamic.

    Hello sir. Great review. I actually played Banjo Kazooie way back when it came out and I used to be my favorite platformer. I finally played Tooie over the past month or so. To me, it's just so much of a superior title, in that it has much more depth, much larger worlds, inter connectivity between the worlds, and so many gameplay improvements (holding on to ledges, separating them both, etc). And when I revisited Banjo Kazooie, it seemed so much smaller and far too easy compared to Tooie (w exception of last 3 or so worlds). Both are great games, but for me, despite my nostalgic feelings for Kazooie (I played it when it came out and played it a lot), I like Tooie better.

    My problem with tooie, is that I spent so much time just aimlessly wandering around to figure out how to get the next Jiggy. In Kazooie, I'd just be going next Jiggy to next, as so the game and experience just moving. But, in Tooie, I just kept hitting wall after wall. Making me groan harder each time. Because of stuff like needing to back track, so you can't just go to the world and get everything, you have to keep on backtracking to previous worlds. And the world's could be considered TOO big.
    Thats just my experience, though.

    • @MikeJackson690
      @MikeJackson690 Před 6 lety +3

      I agree with what you said. Tooie was a little too clever and complex, what with some things being unreachable in levels as you needed to get something from a future level first. The trouble was remembering to actually go back to a previous level once you've obtained a move or an item, hence those 'walls' you hit.
      It was a monstrous game, and one I wanted to love as much as B-K but just couldn't. Nevertheless, it's still a very good game and built almost TOO well on the original!

      @miltywhitneysmiltank6607 Před 5 lety

      Both Banjo games were too different species. The first was like Super Mario 64, only better. and Tootie was a completely different style of game. You can't compare the two. I know the differences and love them both equally. The first will always bring the nostalgia. But the Sequel will be the best of the two N64 games no matter what. Theres just so many improvements added to Tooie to not take notice of. But both games belong together. Not to be separated. So far, despite the current graphics updates on the Xbox ports, the n64 carts are becoming valuable for a reason. Most notably> Tooie. Because they are still awesome games. And people still want them. I'm the proud owner of Both n64 Banjo games. And i wouldn't sell neither for the world. Separating them would be like destroying a family in my n64 collection.

      I felt exactly the same until I finally decided to use a walkthrough. I didn't want it to hold my hand throughout the whole game, but I did use it whenever I was stuck or after explored a level and couldn't figure out what I could/could not do yet. This game is much more enjoyable with some guide help. Now I'm really enjoying it. And even with a guide, it is still a lot of fun to explore these levels. The guide just tells you what you can and can't do and where you should go, but how you get there and what you do to accomplish the task is still all on you.

    I think one reason why some people don't like this game as much as the first was because they played both as kids and while the first game is a simple, colorful, child friendly, and relatively easy platformer, the second is a much more complicated, much more difficult, adventure game. Getting from one area to another via the shortcuts, which is necessary for some Jiggies can be confusing, the bosses and mini games can be tough, and I still find the saucer ride difficult. I think the second had A LOT more going for it for an adult audience. Pick up Kazooie for the first time today, you'll breeze through it, probably thinking, how charming, nice movement, great music etc. Play Tooie for the first time and you'll probably think, this is a GAME and it isn't easy. Like update the graphics and it could come out today. Its definitely way more expansive, complicated, tougher, and grown up. The large moveset, the more macabre story, the difficulty, I think even the zoomed out camera point to Tooie being more of an adult adventure game and less of a child's platformer that Kazooie was.

      Graphics and animation are markedly better, and the levels are more complex, but for me, Kazooie is better hands-down. For me, it's like comparing Ocarina of Time to Majora's Mask; the latter has impressive graphics and animation for the time, and has ambitious gameplay ideas, but playing the predecessor feels like cutting the fat. I love every game I've mentioned and replaying them is always a good time, but Kazooie is a more focused game than Tooie in my book. At the very least, I assure you that you'll love Kazooie since you like the sequel.

  • @LarryLopez91

    I've held somewhat different opinions of this game throughout the years. When I first got it as a kid in Christmas of 2000, I thought it was pretty good, but too overwhelming and never touched it again for years. Fast forward to about 2004, and I decided to pick it up again. My more mature self was able to deal with the gigantic worlds and really appreciate how the levels were always connected to each other, whether it was through the train stations, water pipes, and so on. Fast forward to now, and I still really like how vast and chock full of content it is. I find that some earlier levels can get boring (Witchy World, for example. It really could've used a roller coaster or ferris wheel! And the Western section just SUCKS!), while others are so good that I always look forward to finally reaching them later on (Terrydactyland, Grunty Industries, and Hailfire Peaks).
    How does Tooie compare to Kazooie? If you would've asked me back in '04, I would've said that Tooie was hands down the superior game. Now? I don't really know. Kazooie probably has better music and it's definitely easier to just pick up and play. It's far more manageable for younger kids and Click Clock Wood is still amazing. Having said that, Tooie is bigger, has way more moves, is more complex, has better transformations, and is more humorous. Sigh. It's a toss up for me.
    Banjo Tooie isn't a 3D platformer. It's an adventure game that happens to have some platforming in it lol.

And I have to say they instantly became two of my favorite games I have ever played, the characters had a cartoony aspect that was such a difference from modern hyper realism that was so charming. I`ve always loved Banjo-Kazooie more than any other platform game on the system, because if was so much better than even Super Mario 64, that perfect music and visuals, hilarious jokes, tight controls, ahh memories.. I played Banjo-Tooie when it came out and i was utterly amazed by it, it was better in every aspect than the original, well at least i felt that way back then, but after completing it i realized that something was missing and i thought about Banjo-Kazooie as a superior game, although technically it loses to its successor. Disclaimer to start: I do not think this is a bad game. That said, I really think this game is a step down from Banjo-Kazooie. Yes, the frame rate really does take away some of the fun, but the other big things for me is the level design doesn't feel overly well designed relative to the super tight stacked levels of the first. I too often feel like I'm spending too much time "going somewhere" as in literally running around the large and spaced out levels. Just too much downtime running around levels trying to find what this new move unlocked from an area I was in hours ago. It is good... but I dread the idea of doing it again after beating it the one time. Maybe it is the spot between DK64 and BK, but I think BK really did hit the sweet spot.

    Good stuff, man! I only got into BK recently, but even accounting for my built-in nostalgia for Mario 64, Kazooie gave it a damn good run for its money, and possibly surpassed it in my eyes. Tooie didn't stick nearly as well with me as much though. Once I pick up an XBO in a few months, I'm gonna give it the 360 port a fair shot and hopefully it'll surprise me. I mean, I loved BK, and I loved DK64, so you'd think Tooie should hold better once I play it with a passable framerate!

    BT fell totally flat for me. BKs worlds were iconic, memorable, and PACKED to the point where you wanted to explore every inch of them. BTs worlds literally and figuratively just blurred into one another, and the increased size just made them feel barren, lifeless, and a chore to explore.

  • @3dmarth

    Got the original BK around 2003, and got this one maybe two years later.
    Both are great games, and it's tough to choose a favourite. BT feels more immersive, with its huge, interconnected worlds, but then, it's also a bit bloated, with a few too many doorways and passages that look the same, and that chugging framerate.
    BK seems more tightly-designed as a game, with its relatively compact, easy-to-navigate stages, and its solid technical performance.

    Your example describing the feelings of returning to B.K. like catching up with an old friend and B.T. being like seeing someone you had a significantly less deep relationship with and thus not being too elated is a perfect description of the emotions that these games elicit. I recently played both back to back in late 2021 and had a smile on my face the entire time playing B.K. while having a calculating and focused demeanor playing B.T.
    Having watched many of these reviews I am shocked that no one has mentioned the reason for B.T. being less enjoyed by fans could come from the order of information. If the first game was structured like B.T. (same happy feel as B.K. but with the complexity of B.T.) and then the second was B.K. (with the grim/dire feel of B.T.) we would all be saying that the second game was simply too short and easy. This would be because we were primed to see the series the way the first title was. I feel the majority of people who like one over the other will have their top pick correlating with the first title they played. The major criticism with B.T. are labeled criticism simply in relation to B.K. Complex games generally get a bad reputation because the info is too much to remember in one's head, but a simply notebook and pen to write down some notes would solve that, but people don't associate leisure games with taking notes, however, how could anyone actually complete a real life adventure without notes.
    Much like many video game sequels, B.K. and B.T. cannot be compared. It isnlike having multiple siblings, one is not better or worst than the other on the same vertical axis, they are horizontal.
    It is also not mentioned that like any art/skill/body of knowledge, in order to increase the field you need to attract more people. Complexity/part 2 will never come to fruition if the first experience the general population has with it is not enjoyable. Most education pathways entice new members with the fun parts of the field first, then get deeper and more difficult, those who stick with it earn the better hit of dopamine, which is another way to describe B.T., complex but rewarding.

    I never got into Tooie as much as Kazooie, it felt so complicated and maybe it's because of ASD but it felt so overwhelming. The levels felt much more thought through in Kazooie as they only had to really focus on Banjo&Kazooie's move set rather than incorporated other characters and transformations into it's design, here some of the levels (particularly pterodactyl land) feel a tad messier and not as well thought through. Visuals and story definitely are ramped up compared to Kazooie's and it is preferable for me, but it doesn't allow me to push the gameplay aside. The levels in Kazooie simply felt a lot more fun and less frustrating and confusing.

    Banjo-Kazooie was probably THE first game I ever played that I fell in love with and you bet your ass I played the hell out of Tooie when I got it for Christmas. But they're really two different games. Kazooie was much more straightforward and could be completed (almost) 100% in one run through the game. Tooie, however, had a lot backtracking and content unavailable until you acquire a move from later in the game. It was a much more complex experience than Kazooie and it will always be one of my favorites. But to this day, I still play Kazooie and have a blast doing it.

    I look at Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie as one game. Part 1, part 2. I played BK after getting it for Christmas in 1999, which was some time after it came out, and I got Banjo-Tooie the day it came out (mostly because of the hype from the end of BK) waiting at midnight at EB Games. Thus, in my mind, Banjo-Tooie was more meaningful for me. BK was my favorite game up until that point, and Banjo-Tooie was the first game in my life I ever "wanted" and bought with my own money on launch day (rather than getting for a holiday/birthday). The game is super dear to me and I basically look at it as the definitive way a Banjo game is supposed to play.

The changes they made all seemed very natural, expectable at the time, somehow. But then one day we borrowed the game to some friends and it remained at their place for a few years. When I finally got it back, I was older and better at video games, a bit better at English and more able to enjoy and appreciate its humour and it was an important part of that period of my life. It is one of my favourite games of all time, maybe even favourite. I really hoped Yooka-Laylee would be more like Banjo-Tooie :(

  • @marcoaraujo88

    I was eagerly waiting for Tooie's release since the magazines confirmed it and I had not played much of Kazzoie at the time, so as incredible as it may seem, I have the same nostalgia for this game if not more when comparing to its predecessor. Every time I start playing it I have the same feeling of playing a new and very anticipated game.
    In my opinion Tooie is better in every single way with the exception of the frame rate and maybe the replayability, since Kazooie has an unmatched flow and charm to it. Even with this, Tooie is my favourite by far and for me it represents the pinnacle of 3D Collect-a-ton platformers, also it's Rare at its best.
    I still have to disagree with your point regarding the worlds variety, though. I think they were very distinct from one another. The only thing that was changed is that Rare decided not to go with the standard "desert, grass, swamp, mountain, etc" again but you can see that the themes, textures, enemies, and general feel of each world was still very unique.
    Great video as always, Glenn. I was waiting for this one!

      I may be a little biased about that, because this genre is one of my favourites. Also, DK64 was, too, one of the most anticipated games for me back in the day.
      Despite all of that and the distinct Rare quality still poured all over DK64, I can understand why many people feel there is too much to collect. I feel the game was so focused on this to the point which the developers had to put the collectables in any place they could find. This broke the pace of the game a little bit - and for many people, the fun -. I also think the controls were not on par with the Banjo games. I still love DK64 though. I'd put all Rare platformers above Mario 64 any day.
      Regards from Brazil.
