They were to sing this together at the opening of the Barcelona Olympics but he died before it happened. A recording was played in stead. She became a friend for the rest of his life and they visited each other often. He warned her not to embrace him because he had AIDS but she didn't care. She was at the unveiling of Freddie's statue in Montreux and cried along with Freddie's mother Jer. She said with training he could have sung anything he wanted.

Freddie went to one of her concerts. Said she sang like an angel. She’s was huge opera star. Never heard of Freddie before. They respected each other for talent. Then they became life long friends. They used this song not the video for 92 Olympics in Barcelona. I don’t see too many rock stars doing opera with one of the greatest opera stars ever. That’s our Fred🌈🌟

There will NEVER again be the likes of Freddie Mercury. I know the term gets tossed about with abandon today, but if anyone ever deserved the Title GENIUS , it was Freddie and the boys in Queen !!! He has kept me captivated, Motivated , and inspired since I first fell in love with the band as a kid in 1975. I cannot name another legend who can compare in all categories with him. As comfortable and flawless writing and performing Platinum rock-pop hits, and can then turn the tables and hold his own brilliantly with the greatest Opera Diva of that time . just Holy $#!* Rest in Piece Freddie ...you were and are the greatest POP Rock showman of all time !

My first time seeing this version. They were so good together, and the chemistry is evident. This is the first time two major stars did a genre cross over together. Critics didn't know what to say, it was so unusual. Freddie and Mike Moran had composed all the music for an entire album of duets with Montserrat, with a little help from Tim Rice on some lyrics. In it you can hear them sing beautifully, partially in Japanese, in 'La Japonaise.'

Freddie said he was honored that a super star like her agree to meet a simple man like him.
Freddie loved opera and he was a big fan of her. He said she had the most beautiful voice he had ever heard and she was the only person who made him cry.
Freddie's last dream came true, to sing a duet with her.
When they realized that the Olympics would be in Barcelona in 1992 they dedicated this song for the Olympics. And Montserrat said to Freddie "We will sing it together in Barcelona" and he said "I won't be able to be there". Then he told her he was dying and probably wouldn't make it that long. They became very close friends. She said in an interview ''I loved Freddie and he loved me. I think those people that were touched by Freddie couldn't help but fall in love with him''.
If only Freddie were alive in 1992, the live performance would have been the Greatest Duet Performance the World would have ever seen.

He was so, so scared performing this for the first time with her. He never felt he was really good enough. He sought her out - thought she had the best voice in the world. When he first approached her, she wasn't sure at all, but when she met him and he sang both parts of this to let her hear the song, she was hooked. They had a lovely relationship, they really loved each other (in a completely platonic way of course). But yeah, Freddie was very nervous about performing with someone he considered to be a "proper" singer. It gives me goosebumps every time too, I saw there were nearly tears from you, you were a little overwhelmed. It was lovely to see :) Big love from Scotland. Oh, and it's Mon ser at Cab aye ay :)

This is all wrong. Freddie didn't approach her, she approached him. She contacted Freddie's management and offered to record a song together. When they met she decided to record the whole album together. And Freddie wasn't afraid to perform this song, because it wasn't live. They didn't have time to rehearse so they performed to a pre-recorded audio.

Freddie was always a lover of Opera and a fan of Montserrat in particular, and it was arranged that they would meet. He recorded a demo tape for her, Exercises in Free Love, which eventually became Ensueno on the album. Freddie was so nervous about meeting her that he smoked 2 packs of cigarettes while he was waiting for her to arrive at the hotel. They hit it off right away, Montsy loved his demo and asked him how many songs would they put on a rock and roll album and he replied 10. “Then we shall do 10 too!” she announced. Because of her schedule he then had two weeks to write 10 songs, which he did with Mike Moran. The entire Barcelona album is a Masterpiece, every song will give you chills. My picks are La Japonaise and How Can I Go On, but it really doesn’t matter which song you choose. I’d love you to listen to Freddie’s demo first though. Exercises in Free Love Will amaze you

Freddie, loved her voice , she never heard of him.
Disappointed , he urged Mike Moran to arrange a meet.
She agreed , Freddie pitched his vision, with Mike accompanied him on piano , he sang a couple songs from this creationists vision of a sort of rock opera. She was swept by his amazing voice , she asked where she could hear him singing , he sent her some recordings, she asked if he would write a song about her beloved city , who would host the 1992 summer Olympics, then she would give him an answer. Well ....
Barcelona was born. Check it out.
    Particularily...songs
How Can I Go On ,
    Guide Me Home,
She brings tears to your eyes and tingles your spine.
    Freddie the Great
    Is completely in his element.
    Enjoy, my friend.

I'm so glad Freddie got to do this, it made him so happy. Montserrat and he really cared for each other. There are several interviews of each of them about the other and at least one of them together.

Freddie was a big opera devotee and he wrote Bohemian Rhapsody as ‘opera inspired’.

Not sure if you know, but this is part of an album called Barcelona. Its duets. Freddie composed the music specifically for the two of them. Its absolutely amazing & was above suc cess. This song was the theme song of the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona in 1992 , the year after Freddie died. They were close friends & fans of each other. He told her about his health issues & she kept his secret, as a true friend. Theres a lovely picture of her with his family at the dedication of his statue. Also, she did a few interviews discussing Freddie & their experiences together & their relationship.

Nice reaction again! Most of the reactors become speechless from this song for the first time, never mind it. Montserrat and Freddie were ARTISTS not only 2 singers. They've become true friends and she was really sad, that Freddie was who passed away earlier. Please, check out one of Montserrat's interviews about their collaboration.

People who do reactions to this song never mention that Freddie also WROTE the song -both parts. He sent her tapes of her part in her voice (see Exercises in Free Love) so she could practice before recording. The writing for an operatic voice is more amazing than the singing itself.

When Freddie did great pretender he forgot there needed to be a b side!
He told mike to do something classical on the piano and he would improvise
'Excersises in free love' mike questioned the title, Freddie just said it will do!
No words just notes? But there's something quite beautiful about it
He said it would be funny to pretend to be a saprona singer on the back of great pretender!
Ironic timing he met montsarat soon after this,a proffessional soprano singer!
Mike said Freddie never saw himself as a famous singer and got nervous meeting other singers
apparently he was so nervous thinking she wouldn't turn up!
he didn't say much when she did and just blurted out we have something for you!
and they performed excersises in free love at the piano at the Ritz!
they thought it would be an ice braker
as her English wasn't great she thought it was a gift!
listened intently and said yes i like it ver y much.I will perform it in two weeks and informed mike he was playiing Piano at covent Garden!
she would be back in a few hours if he could write out the music for her!
anyway they performed it,Freddie was in the audience she didn't know if he was coming but brought everyone attention to him
she had written lyrics to it as a surprise
which became ensuno on the album again worth listening to
when she went to his house she stayed there until 6am! just having fun jam session with mike and Freddie
she thought it was ever so funny to see the press reactions!
Freddie was worried about her and she thought he didnt want her there!
I do but it's 6 oclock in the morning! I'll get into trouble if your too tired to perform!
there's a tape of this conversation!
they formed a very strong bond with each other very quickly
you can see the love and respect between them on stage

This is the first cross over with opera so it was learning from scratch!
Freddie is used to working with people but not writting for people and obv an opera singer sings differently!
I cant remember exactly but you have to be careful what words you use...
She barely had any free time so he and mike moran had to do a demo with Freddie singing her part in falsetto then send it to her for feed back
If she liked it she would learn her part..
It was a lot of work!
He asked tim rice to do two songs
They had done the mysic but were lyriced out!
