  • Freddie Mercury was a man of many talents and many different sides. The songs he wrote for and with Queen filled stadiums around the globe and have rightly gone down in history, but he also embarked on a solo career that took him from the clubs of Munich and New York to the great opera houses of the world.
He was the ultimate showman, but he kept his private life away from the prying eyes of the media; a larger than life rock star who loved disco, classical music and ballet. He was a restless spirit, a true chameleon who revelled in his own contradictions.
All the different sides of this iconic musician can be found on Freddie Mercury: Messenger Of The Gods - The Singles. All formats released September 2nd 2016.
This wonderful 1987 video, capturing Freddie Mercury's unforgettable collaboration with Spanish opera diva Montserrat Caballé, accompanied the very first single from the 'Barcelona' album (which was to follow a full year later). This unexpected and unlikely merging of talent took the world by storm, and this was the first of three singles released from the album. The Director was David Mallet and it was filmed at Pinewood Studios in London. The single was released in the UK on 26th October 1987.

It is a very special song, and how I introduced my love of Freddie and Queen to my mum and dad, who were 63 and 71 at the time - they asked me whether I had heard it, because they loved it.
Mum fell in love with Freddie, and all his work subsequently, and Dad with a lot of Queen's stuff, too. Inneundo was one of his favourites, which you might like to react to, Tim.

You are right it was the first time rock met opera in this way… the musical love affair and friendship lasted well beyond the collaboration and Montsy was in Geneva for the unveiling of his memorial statue overlooking the lake. There is a fascinating set of interviews with her where she talks about working with Freddie and her admiration of him/his work.

So so so glad they got to work together
He was recording his second solo album
    She contacted him to meet
The previous year he said she was the best voice he had ever heard.
He agreed to doing a song which was this, then he sided his solo and did an album with her
She was so excited for them to perform this at Barcalona olympics.
He had told her he had Aids
He only found out between agreeing and recording.
But she was in denial how serious it was not wanting to accept it.
In the end he had to tell her bluntly he wouldn't be here.
That must have been so difficult
The song was still played at the olympics

Freddie wrote a whole album for the two of them with Mike Moran and this was a part of a concert with other artists, can't remember quite who, but you'll probably find it if you search the place, I think the two sang three songs from the album, and there is an audio tape of the two at Garden Lodge Freddie house in London, they only met around three or four years beforehand, and it was quite by chance, Freddie loved Opera, Ballet etc and he went out with one of his friends I think Covent Garden and he fell in love, they met and this song eventually used for the opening of the Barcelona Olympics in 1992 which Freddie missed by a few months

You’re right that this song was written for Freddie cuz he wrote it (with Mike Moran, who-I think-is the man with the curly hair who is conducting in the video.) Not sure how anyone can listen to/watch the Queen or Freddie Mercury performances that you’ve reacted and not decide to do a lot more Queen reactions as soon as you can, but, hey, it’s your channel and, obviously, you make those decisions. You say you like all kinds of music that isn’t auto-tuned. Well, there almost is no ‘typical’ Freddie Mercury or Queen song; there is so much variety in their vast catalog. But thanks for doing the Queen reactions which you have done so far, tho. I’ve been a Queen fan since the early ‘70’s and it’s super fun to watch people hear their songs for the first time or for the first time in a long time. Thank goodness CZcams provides so many choices for the hundreds of thousands of Queen fans like me!

Also the acoustic (guitar) version of their song "Confetti" and "Secret Love Song" live on Little Mix The Search accompanied by piano and strings are both amazing.
