Squirrel Reacts to Freddie Mercury & Montserrat Caballé - Barcelona (1987 Remastered)

- Freddie Mercury was a man of many talents and many different sides. The songs he wrote for and with Queen filled stadiums around the globe and have rightly gone down in history, but he also embarked on a solo career that took him from the clubs of Munich and New York to the great opera houses of the world.
He was the ultimate showman, but he kept his private life away from the prying eyes of the media; a larger than life rock star who loved disco, classical music and ballet. He was a restless spirit, a true chameleon who revelled in his own contradictions.
All the different sides of this iconic musician can be found on Freddie Mercury: Messenger Of The Gods - The Singles. All formats released September 2nd 2016.
This wonderful 1987 video, capturing Freddie Mercury's unforgettable collaboration with Spanish opera diva Montserrat Caballé, accompanied the very first single from the 'Barcelona' album (which was to follow a full year later). This unexpected and unlikely merging of talent took the world by storm, and this was the first of three singles released from the album. The Director was David Mallet and it was filmed at Pinewood Studios in London. The single was released in the UK on 26th October 1987.

I'd say probably 99% of Freddie Mercury fans adore this piece of music
2 divas together performing and not an autotune device in sight.
Spine tingling isn't it.
Both no longer here but their legacy lives on. Thank you Freddie and Monserrat and thank you Squirrel for reacting to it.
👏👏👏
I’m hardcore Freddie fan. Have never heard of any Freddie fan who doesn’t love Barcelona! … and all the other songs he did with Montsy♥️
Take a listen to how he persuaded her to duet.
Freddie Mercury - Exercises in Free Love
So sad that we've lost them both now. Talent like that is never repeated.
I sometimes think of this as "Bohemian Rhapsody Act 2" :) Wonderful stuff, with two of the finest artists of the last century in (literal) perfect harmony.
They loved and adored each other heaven must be ringing with their voices
It is a very special song, and how I introduced my love of Freddie and Queen to my mum and dad, who were 63 and 71 at the time - they asked me whether I had heard it, because they loved it.
Mum fell in love with Freddie, and all his work subsequently, and Dad with a lot of Queen's stuff, too. Inneundo was one of his favourites, which you might like to react to, Tim.
One of the few performances that gets me every time no matter how often I see it. Absolutely beautiful
👏👏👏 reaction
You are right it was the first time rock met opera in this way… the musical love affair and friendship lasted well beyond the collaboration and Montsy was in Geneva for the unveiling of his memorial statue overlooking the lake. There is a fascinating set of interviews with her where she talks about working with Freddie and her admiration of him/his work.
Great music is great music regardless of genre. This I would class as a masterpiece.
Magnificence here for us to enjoy forever. Thanks for your reaction. The music for Freddie's funeral program included an aria by Montserrat and a track from Aretha Franklin's Amazing Grace album. Freddie made fantastic music and appreciated fantastic music. Thanks again.
It brings a tear to my eyes every time I see this
It was such a fantastic performance with a fascinating backstory. They may in many respects be chalk and cheese but it works on so many levels.
So so so glad they got to work together
He was recording his second solo album
She contacted him to meet
The previous year he said she was the best voice he had ever heard.
He agreed to doing a song which was this, then he sided his solo and did an album with her
She was so excited for them to perform this at Barcalona olympics.
He had told her he had Aids
He only found out between agreeing and recording.
But she was in denial how serious it was not wanting to accept it.
In the end he had to tell her bluntly he wouldn't be here.
That must have been so difficult
The song was still played at the olympics
Everyone called Fred or Freddie. Is a legend. They all go to great heights dibnah style.😀👋👏👏
IMPRESIONANTE.
Himno Olimpiadas BARCELONA1992 (España)
❤️❤️👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻❤️❤️❤️
Great track. They used it at the Olympics when they were held in Barcelona. (1992 ?)
Written and performed in Barcelona the year that city hosted The Olympics. Pure magic!!
Goosebumps every time!! 🌙 🌟⭐️💫✨☀️
Now it’s time for THE GOLDEN BOY (My Fav off the Barcelona album) 👌
This touches my soul. So so beautiful. Freddie and Monserrat were two giants💕💕💕
So glad you liked this. The smile on your face throughout says it all! I never tire of hearing this. The first time I heard it I had the play it again immediately as I couldn’t believe it. ❤️🐿🏴
Thank you very much, Squirrel. This one makes my toes curl. :-)
Freddie wrote a whole album for the two of them with Mike Moran and this was a part of a concert with other artists, can't remember quite who, but you'll probably find it if you search the place, I think the two sang three songs from the album, and there is an audio tape of the two at Garden Lodge Freddie house in London, they only met around three or four years beforehand, and it was quite by chance, Freddie loved Opera, Ballet etc and he went out with one of his friends I think Covent Garden and he fell in love, they met and this song eventually used for the opening of the Barcelona Olympics in 1992 which Freddie missed by a few months
they were made to sing with each other
Seriously! I AGREE so beautiful
I have watched this video many, many times without ever noticing the shadow! Had to go back to look for it--thanks for noticing and pointing that out--it added a fun element. Love this entire album-- Freddie Mercury was a very innovative composer to mix these two genres and voices together.
How Can I Go On same album is fantastic.
The theme to the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona.
It's a shame Freddie had passed away a few months before. He loved opera.
So beautiful, thank you so much mr.s, juct what I needed. Freddie loved opera so much and often went to performances whenever and whenever (especially the royal opera house in london). He described her voice as the most perfect and sublime he ever heard. Can't argue with that! Mr.Blooby to this, squirrel? Are you well?
Thanks again for sharing all these things with us xxxx You truly make a deference and it means a lot 🐿👏❤🏴
Put simply, this is musical perfection! It just doesn't get any better than this ❤️
Absolutely amazing performance from both artists, if you love this one check out them singing (How Can I Go On ) your love it ,Freddie wrote several opera the songs with himself and this lady, absolutely amazing,(The Golden Boy ) is another one to react to, lm the greatest Queen fan and have attended there concerts from the 70s to the 80s and also Freddie’s very last live performance at Knebworth in 1986 absolutely amazing flamboyant anthems from one of the best bands ever, great reaction thanks 🙏
To me this feels like someone pouring single cream over a pile of strawberries 🍓! Perfect. Divine!
Really enjoyed the magnificent performance and your heartfelt reaction.
Monsy as Freddie called her, the opera diva asked him to write a song about Barcelona for them to sing. She loved the song and he ended up writing an entire album for them. It’s great. You should check out Freddie Mercury- Exercises in Free Love. It’s fascinating! 😮 Love your reactions so I can watch your face during Queen and Freddie Mercury songs!
Gets you right here ❤️❤️’bangs chest hard’ - it has soul….
Thanks to both for a masterpiece like this, what a pity they can not give us another like that
The whole album Barcelona is great, check out How can I go on, please
My funeral song . I adore it
So glad you finally listened to us all! I've had this on daily play for months (again).
Wow that was incredible Freddie was magic 💙✌🏼very much enjoyed this squirrel 🐿👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 thank you gamer 😊
Amazing 👏
That is Perfection ! 🙂
I Agree
Thank you for this one. All the songs from their Barcelona album are worth hearing, even if you don't do a reaction.
You’re right that this song was written for Freddie cuz he wrote it (with Mike Moran, who-I think-is the man with the curly hair who is conducting in the video.) Not sure how anyone can listen to/watch the Queen or Freddie Mercury performances that you’ve reacted and not decide to do a lot more Queen reactions as soon as you can, but, hey, it’s your channel and, obviously, you make those decisions. You say you like all kinds of music that isn’t auto-tuned. Well, there almost is no ‘typical’ Freddie Mercury or Queen song; there is so much variety in their vast catalog. But thanks for doing the Queen reactions which you have done so far, tho. I’ve been a Queen fan since the early ‘70’s and it’s super fun to watch people hear their songs for the first time or for the first time in a long time. Thank goodness CZcams provides so many choices for the hundreds of thousands of Queen fans like me!
Freddie wrote it for him and Montserrat as he loved her voice. Hopefully they are now together dueting as much as they want. Truly heavenly music.
makes me what rehearsals were like 😇
Listen to him do 'Exercises in Free Love' She was his favourite opera singer and they made an album together.
Blimey bud, you doing overtime at the weekend lol? Yup, very nice..you can tell they had great chemistry and were v fond of each other..and Brian May in glasses conducting of course (no, not really!)...hope you're well bud, good one :)
The talent and versatility of Freddie is awesome.
Truly unmatched
As you enjoy great vocals I recommend the British pop group Little Mix, they often do acapella and acoustic performances, there is a compilation called "acapella queens", full acapella versions of their songs "Boy" and "The End". Also the acoustic (guitar) version of their song "Confetti" and "Secret Love Song" live on Little Mix The Search accompanied by piano and strings are both amazing.
Thanks❤🙏
👍🏻 cheers 🍻
Beautiful🤗
Absolute tuuuunnne.
Looked like you really enjoyed that
Awesome
Magical. Can’t help by smile.
Great reaction!!!!
Thank You
Tony would love to see what you think about Pavarotti singing Nessun Dorma. Goosebumps on goosebumps
Incredible musicianship!
Wow 🥰 loved it 😍 thanks liked subscribed 😁❤️ Freddie Mercury ❤️ Freddie and Montserrat ❤️ please react to more duets from them 🤩
I subscribed to your channel because you love Queen and Freddie and really appreciate their talents! I love Freddie and Montsy together, they truly loved one another. The Golden Boy (from the Barcelona album) is one of my favorites. Here are some Queen songs you might want to react to: Cool Cat, Innuendo, The Miracle, Headlong, Mustapha, White Queen (live) …. I could go on & on!! 💖👨🏻
I’m sure I’ll get to all of them 😎. Thank You
I get shivers from that song
They made a whole album together.
For the Barcelona olympics
Your reaction said it all so glad you didn't interrupt the flow.
Amazing or what!
So glad you reviewed this, makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up!! Such a beautiful song. If you like this you may like to listen to Luciano Pavarotti sing with pop stars the mix if opera and pop go so well together xx
I’ll try and find it
Wow indeed! Don't need words. 👍
❤️❤️❤️
That was awesome. And you don’t get to see a conductor using a light sabre very often. 🤘🇬🇧🤘
Just stumbled across your new channel mate....glad you've moved to the dark side of music!! Still love ya man...
I’m so glad you reacted to this wonderful duet.
Your smile was glorious
listen to gimme the prize or innuendo both fantastic
Both Freddie and Montserrat are gone... I was following the latter's career pretty closely and lost track of her over the last six years... She passed away last year...
I tease that sopranos die at the top of their lungs of TB (due to Mimi of La Boheme and Violetta of La Traviata) but the only exception people forget about the three consumptive ladies was that Mignon died of VD and not TB...
Here's one I'm sure you'll love. It will put a smile on your face. Military drummers like no other: ''Royal Marines Corps of Drums and Top Secret Drum Corps | The Bands of HM Royal Marines.'' They are just amazing and fun.
I do like this version, however the primal 'VIVA' is missing. I suppose it's because that's the one that I saw first and I miss it as part of the scene setting sequence with all the crowds and fountains.
I think every genre of music you listed, Queen has done. One of a kind . Btw liked your reaction.
Try to find…cool cat! Great song!🇬🇧🌈🇬🇧
Here's a challenge for you. I dare you to play Andrea Bocelli and Bryn Terfel: Au Fond Du Temple Saint. Two magnificent voices coming together in perfect harmony!
Quick storyline - two best mates since childhood see a beautiful woman. They each try to date her. She plays them. They decide their friendship is more important. :-)
Terfel and Bocelli are fine, but even better (imho) is Terfel with Roberto Alagna. You might want to check it out on CZcams, if you haven't already :)
@@ftumschk That's a good version too, especially with the useful subtitles, but goodness they look so young! :-D
@@margaretnicol3423 :)
You have no soul if you don't like this song. The two of them sounded perfect together. I keep telling my wife with all the scary crap going on in the world, there may be one thing that can save it. MUSIC
Not sure if you realize that Freddy wrote this, an entire album in fact.
Best thing that ever came out of football. :-D
Magical😊 So lovely
Have you done Sir Cliff Richard at Wimbledon?
I know you did James Blunt's Monsters, but you must do some others. Disturb's Sound of Silence (MUST be the Live Conan version), their Thanks for the Memories is also excellent and the radio version of Down with the Sickness is awesome - the more explicit version is great too, but you have to understand it is a critique of the State and Society, rather than his actual Mother!
Reacción a Cristina ramos en the show must go on de Queen desde Tenerife
🙂👍🇬🇧🇺🇸
Can you do two songs in one video? It would be interesting to compare Pentatonix doing Hallelujah a cappella to the original writer Leonard Cohen who tells a grittier tale.
Have you seen James brown and Pavarotti doing it's a man's world, it's just the best
Freddie wrote it for them to sing together, and you can hear their first meeting in the lyrics. It's good, but not my favourite. Vanilla and chocolate again! Guess I'm just a good old fashioned rock chic at heart!
A bit different from Mr Blobby Squirrel.
Isn't Freddie talented and versatile. I remember when this was newly released and liked it then. Still do. It's like a Lloyd Webber production, fantastic.
I can't stick this, the music vid that is, not young Squirrel
God, I prefer Mr Blobby to this pretentious tosh. Over rated Freddie.
I’d expect nothing less Phil
