  • Hey guys check out my latest reaction video to queen one vision documentary. It was cool to be able to watch Freddie, Brian, Rojer and John go through the process of recording a song. It really is hard work and they are perfectionists. One vision came out great. Queen did that.

"There's a lifetime's worth of memories there, oftentimes too many to remember with any clarity. They all blend together, the days in the road and the nights in the studio. You on your piano, me on my drums, tapping a beat as you cross out something on the music sheet. You on stage in your element, me watching you from the best seat in the house. It's like flicking through photographs found in a tin box hidden away, faded and worn with time, and everything in black and white because you took the colours away when you died." Roger Taylor

John was the quiet one but no dummy. Brain said he could cut you to ribbons with a single sentence if he felt the need. He didn't speak a lot but when he did they listened because he always had good advice or would settle an argument. His bass carried so many of their songs. He could play simple earworm riffs like Under Pressure or Another one bites the dust (He played ALL the instruments on that particular recording), driving riffs like Breakthru and Invisible Man or really complex ones like Millionaire Waltz. I saw them live and he was fantastic. He also knew a lot about the technical aspects of recording since he was an electrical engineer.
PS, did you miss Freddie's ad lib @23:08..."One dump, one turd, two tits John Deacon"? Freddie and John were very close friends although very different in many ways. Freddie encouraged John to write and he did write many terrific songs.

Freddie on John: "He's sort of quiet, lots of people think that, but don't underestimate him, he's got a fiery 🔥 streak under all that." On the set of These Are The Days Of Our Lives video shoot on May 30, 1991, shortly before Freddie's loss that November, John also refuted the simplistic view many had of him. He said: "Often it is singers and guitarists who are more outspoken. But behind the scenes, I can be as noisy as any body else. "I think we all had our fair share of craziness over the years. I can’t say it’s been easy, it’s been difficult at times, we’ve had good times and bad times, when we’ve fallen out and made up…" During much of that time, Freddie and John formed their own unit in the band, often travelling together on tour. Brian May also gave his unique insider perspective: "I think losing Freddie was very hard for him as well. He found that incredibly hard to process, to the point where actually playing with us made it more difficult."

I love this documentary and all the comments below are just fabulous!! Freddie called Brian, Roger, & John to the studio so they could write a song together! The band decided that the song would be accredited to all of them. The chords were composed by Brian, Roger wrote the lyrics, & Freddie was in charge of production & arrangements. And the Queen boys were very good sports during the filming! 😍 Apparently, they were a little unhappy with the film crew being there which forced them to fool around at times but that’s okay because we Queen fans love the “making of One Vision” documentary!! I’m sure in hindsight Queen was glad that it was made!! 👏👏👏👏

Ironically, the same story as the man who made shades 'cool' for performers... Roy Orbison!
He was pretty much blind, and wore prescription shades purely because he lived in very very sunny Texas, USA.
One day he was due to perform and realised he had left behind his regular glasses and so decided (as he couldn't see) to wear his shades.
A new image was born and so both Roy and Ray Charles are influencers on pretty much the rest of the music industry in terms of what's cool!

The band letting loose, having fun and being, quite frankly, very silly. Freddie, of course, was the ringleader but John Deacon was quite happy to be the punchline for a series of increasingly outrageous and rude alternate lyrics for one of the band's biggest hits. The footage was shot during the recording of One Vision, in September 1985 at Musicland Studios in Munich. Everybody knows the famously silly "fried chicken" 🍳🐔 ending for the song, but Freddie actually had a lot more where that came from. In place of the official words: "One flesh, one bone, one true religion, one voice, one hope, one real decision" this hilarious clip shows Freddie's naughty alternative. He sings: "One dump, one turd, two t*ts, John Deacon!" He keeps going tweaking another famous line to: "One heart, one soul... one sex position." In the background in the sound mixing room, you can see producer and sound engineer Reinhold Mack, laughing and banging his head in mock despair. Meanwhile, Brian May and John Deacon's sheer joy at the silliness is clear, while Roger Taylor laughs in the separate drums rooms. At another point, Freddie calls out "chickenfeed, babe." The video also shows that the fun didn't stop there, with Freddie and Brian larking around and laughing uproariously in between takes. It is a mark of genius that "Fried chicken' was left in the final cut, especially when the main lyrics deal with grand imagery and concepts like religion and the unity of humanity. It is pure Queen, punctuating their own pompous leanings with a sly joke. It is why fans continue to love them as much today as ever... Roger: "that rotter (scoundrel) Freddie 😇 vs. 😈 changed the words." 😁. John on Freddie: "he's a perfectionist and wants to do things in a big way💯 " Freddie on Freddie: "the bigger the better in EVERYTHING." ( ✪ワ✪)ノʸᵉᵃʰᵎ

They also incorporated parts of this documentary into their video of One Vision which is very cool, even more behind the scenes clips than it even shows here. My favorite part is when Freddie laughs. You are absolutely correct on their personalities and Freddie is an absolute perfectionist, I always say he can feel the music and in his head knows what it should sound like, and he pushes them for that sound, down to the smallest of details and notes. Wonderful reaction!! The reason for them being in different rooms was to generate different sounds for the individual instruments depending on what sound was wanted, ie.. an ambient sound from amplifiers or drums, or a tight, hard sound from an enclosed space, or an even tighter sound from the instrument going directly to the sound desk without amplification (John in the sound booth with the engineer Reinhold Mac is an example). Queen are know for using multiple approaches in a song to give the song the layering that they wanted.

This is so much fun. At one point, I don't know if they are going to show it in this, but Freddie was substituting the words of the song with the items on a Chinese Take-Out menu hence the final words of the song "Fried Chicken." The guys decided to leave that in. The different rooms are for when they are laying down their basic tracks that the other tracks will be laid on. There is an initial track (click track) that is laid down (like an initial sketch), sometimes piano that will later be deleted. Each of the instruments is coming in and putting down their basic track on the top of the piano sketch. At a certain point, they all come in and do tracks together after they get the base of the song together. It is indeed a process. They each hear that first basic track which, depending on the song, starts with different instruments sometimes bass and drums and when that is the case, Brian comes in later with his fills to get that solid first track down that then everyone can play on top of and the body of the song begins to form. There are several YT videos of the different initial tracks of each of the instruments on Bohemian Rhapsody, so you can hear just the piano, or bass or different layers of harmonies like just Roger's high harmonies track. It is interesting. This is Roger's song so he has the final say.

this is a collab and credited to all of them
Freddie wouldn't get that involved with telling Roger how to change it normally, they might give suggestions but not to this level
the base of the song is Rogers,he and Freddie were the main composers/producers/writters on this
John explained Freddie had suggested they all came in to write a song together,he was on holiday so it was mainly the other three
Roger knowing Freddie wanted to do a collab turned up with practically a complete song!
they used it as a base to work from but as Roger said they changed all my words! they pretty much re composed it as well
but the essence of Rogers song is still there

      the magic album 86
not all the songs were credited to 'Queen'
only one vision, despite Roger turning up with a song they had come in to do a 'collab' song
they only kept the idea of his song as something to work from, but they wrote and composed a new song but kept the essence of Rogers song
Freddie 'embelished' Rogers kind of magic,he re worked it but its still completly credited to Roger
      because the song was Rogers
one vision, they only kept Rogers idea what they ended up with was no longer what Roger had put forward
But a new song based on Rogers idea
      Edit
John says in the video that Freddie asked them to come in yo erite a song together

Often, there will be smaller rooms called "isolation booths" to accommodate loud instruments such as drums or electric guitar amplifiers and speakers, to keep these sounds from being audible to the microphones that are capturing the sounds from other instruments or voices.

    • @grandtheftmanualv945
      @grandtheftmanualv945 Před 3 lety +5

      Absolutely.
It all depends how you want to record.
Queen were most often using the 'clean' approach, where you completely separate each instrument in a booth or another room, to avoid 'leakage', which is when you can hear (for instance) guitar in the background of the isolated bass track...
Other bands (including occasionally Queen - such as in Sleeping On The Sidewalk) like The Rolling Stones tend to record in a more 'live' situation where the band all play together in the same room, with some basic partitioning to prevent distortion.
Queen generally based their songs in one of two ways:
First is Drum, Bass and Piano played together in the way you see in this video (Killer Queen, Bohemian Rhapsody.....), and then vocals, guitar and other sounds layered on after.
To second is using guitar instead of piano (like One Vision, Hammer To Fall....)

I'm a very quiet guy usually, but when it comes to writing, arranging and recording music with other people I suddenly become ringleader. I really can't help myself. I tweak other people's parts, I make us repeat sections of songs that we haven't perfected ad nauseam, and I have no problem with telling people that what they're playing isn't working. I'll back off a little if someone else came up with the concept for the song, but I still toss out every tiny idea I have and make us replay stuff that doesn't sound quite right until it does. I am a very unemotional, unorganized person who admittedly half-asses a lot. With most other things I just let other people take the reins and follow their instructions, but for some reason when it comes to music I suddenly turn into a leader and a perfectionist. Thank god for that.

Not sure why they were in separate rooms but I am guessing here but I think it has to do with separating for recording purposes. Fun reaction video! Never saw this One Vision documentary before. It was hilarious and fun!

2:50 I have that ovation in the front. Great acoustic guitar. Very full sound. It was a favorite among 70s musicians.

  • @anne-mariesindruprix4792

But in the end - they had to say "fried chicken" - - after having used the whole menucard - Chinese I think . It's hilarious . There are at least 2 more versions of this - a little bit different - and then the result in the end. Check them out.

at 443 i guess they're either rehearsing a small section of ONE VISION or they're practicing but not recording - or maybe the tape is always rolling just in case. we don't know what's going on exactly (at least i dont) but it would be interesting if the doc was a narrated journey in certain spots so that we the uninformed could derive more from what we're seeing.

Freddie the Great sounds accurate. 👍
Many of their riffs began on the piano. It’s considered a Roger & Freddie song.
Roger keeping it real. Very down to earth.

it's worth putting that effort in at the time then the songs are more likely to last and not sound dated in years to come
Rogers drums sounded fine but it did sound better the way Freddie suggested it
Freddie re worked Rogers kind of magic when he was on holiday! adding extra base ..Roger liked it and it was kept
freddie said he felt composition was his strength rather than lyrics
I get the impression that Roger and John complained but made Freddie the one to tell Brian!
he was only keeping time but John clearly didn't like Roger bringing that up on film!
you need a balance as Freddie said previously if your too bosy they would go to another band
but if you're too agreeable when you don't agree because you don't want to risk falling out with people then the song will be ok but not great
you could feel Freddie getting annoyed because Brian was doing his own thing but not looking at the band as a whole you need to be aware of what everyone is doing and work together
but Roger and Brian rowed the most and they both sid it was Freddie that calmed things down and found a compromise
he had to correct what was wrong but you could feel the tension building
I think that's why Freddie made up silly lyrics at the end to brake the tention and get everyone back on track it was nice to see them all smiling when they realised what he was coming up with!
when they were recording Freddies bohemian rhapsody it took 3 weeks!
    hundreds of overdubbs
Freddie said in an interview, well to keep them going I made sure they had plenty of tea! when they had a rest ok shall we do a few more
how he kept them motivated for 3 weeks on a song they couldn't even envisage until the end I dont know
freddie couldn't write and read music so he had his own way of doing things!
    Edit
On his songs he would compose everyone parts on the piano
Brian would listen to the backing track the other three would do then he composed his solo and added guitar where Freddie had mapped out
On some earlier songs Freddie composed the guitar parts and solo
Theres only a couple of songs and riffs Freddie composed on guitar

Freddie didn't just add bass to "It's a Kind of Magic," he -- according to Freddie in an interview -- completely redid it while Roger was out of town. Changed it up completely is how he put it.

Im not a musician I dont know the correct words
If you think its stupid go laugh at Brian for saying it
He said that he did, he said he transcribed from the piano to the guitar
Then as we saw here he probably fine tuned it as he wanted it
People do guitar versions of piano songs..
Stop behaving as if its a riduculous thing to say
Im not deciding things im repeating what he said

The instruments can cause interference with each other if up close.
For instance a certain frequency of a drum hit could reverberate the guitar strings in an unexpected way, so cause noise pollution in the track.
I have had a guitar sat near a drummer on a stand not been played whilst the drummer set up his drums. It caused the strings to resonate on their own when he hit certain frequency of a drum strike.
Im not a professional musician by any stretch of the imagination, so do correcting me if Im wrong.
But it seems logical to me that when recording you wouldnt want any cross bleed of sound.

also the songs are they already demo tapes brought into the studio to share with the band --- probably not at this point in their career -- they probably write the songs when they get there - to the studio where they can turn them into something. song writing is probably tedious to some degree

I'm sorry. Freddie Mercury is a very special memory. Freddie Mercury was a very special person. However, I'm certain he felt as your words imply you feel. (Adding to his unique He wanted to talk about 'we' or the band; not 'me'. Freddie is a major inspiration for me and he's been gone almost 30 years- and I began learning about him and Queen a mere 2 years ago.. He was/is special. I'm sorry but it's truth.
