The intro alone to this performance by itself was epic....the performance was historical and will be with us for the next 500 years. This was all done at the end of Freddie's life and what a great gift he gave us for all time. I have seen this 50 times or more, and still, if you can watch this without being moved to tears, you are a better man than I am. I don't know which moves me more this or How can I go on with Freddie and Montserrat. This should be used as the absolute standard of epic excellence everywhere.

  • @parkviewmo
    @parkviewmo Před 2 lety +15

Your eyes said everything about your reaction. Montserrat was Freddie's favorite opera singer, and he loved opera! The love and respect between these two lovers of music just shine forth in this song. Montserrat wanted a song about her home city, and it was scheduled to host the 1992 Olympics. Mike Moran wrote this with Freddie and their creation of a song that featured both singers and their amazing skills in each of their areas is pure genius.

It was a dream for Freddie to sing with Montsy. You should check out his “Exercises in Free Love”. where he is singing her part as he pitched his vision to her. The duo did a whole album together. By the way Barcelona was written with the 1992 Olympics in mind and was sung at the opening ceremony. Montsy was very saddened when Freddie fold her he would not be there to sing it with her. Love your reactions :-)

    Mind-blowing, right?
I just love the hole Barcelona album, and joining those two amazing artists was something made in heaven. They were meant to sing together, and knock out frontiers between genres of music. Now, can you say that rock & opera don't belong together? Before this no one believed it could ever be possible, but after others went the same way, although firstly saying they were crazy, and it would never work...yeah, sure...
Freddie and Montserrat (Montsy as Freddie lovingly called her), a pair made in heaven. R.I.P. for both
If you liked this one, try The Golden Boy, from the same Barcelona album, the lyrics are a masterpiece, and the performances out of this world.

As I understand Freddie Mercury, first saw the legendary Montserrat Caballe in Covent Garden Opera House in London, when he went to see Luciano Pavarotti perform. She was the lead female role and when she sang her first notes, Freddie was overwhlemed. There is an excellent interview with "La Superba" as her Italian fans called her, here on CZcams, giving the entire background. So the story goes Freddie actually composed the amazing anthem "BARCELONA" in honour of her being born and living there, all her life. There's was a true, if cerebral "love match", their combined love of music bound them together in a symbiotic, deep friendship .
The duet was selected and became the central theme of the city of Barcelona's successful bid to host the Summer Olympics in 1992, It was hoped that they would perform the monumental duet at the opening ceremony, but tragically the fates decreed otherwise. Many still feel that the opening ceremony was however the best ever..Montserrat Caballe never sung the piece again, preferring to keep it as a lasting tribute to her collaborator and dear friend, whom she cherished until her own sad demise in 2018...

Freddie wrote this song about his first meeting with Montserrat. There are tons of CZcams videos and books written about their first meeting, and how their album came together. After Freddie's death, this song was picked to present at the Barcelona Olympics.

This is one of the most iconic performances that I remember from the run-up to the Olympics in Barcelona in 1992. Sadly, Freddie did not live to perform at the opening ceremony. He died a year earlier from complications of AIDS. In those awful days, we lost so so many amazing artists and creatives to the AIDS pandemic.. Greatest part of reaction is the factual expressions. You're were priceless and were a subtle critique of the whole show without needing any words!! Well done.

I love this song! Their vocals aren’t actually live - Freddie ALWAYS sang live and absolutely hated lip syncing, but he was already ill here and had stopped touring because of his health; he didn’t quite have the energy to perform live anymore. It’s incredible how he still sounded so strong and full of life; his voice had only gotten better and clearer after he quit smoking and drinking (well, mostly lol) to stay healthier. Montserrat was an incredibly famous Spanish opera singer, and the first time Freddie saw her perform on stage he was incredibly moved and said he has found the best voice in the world. Somehow Montserrat heard about this after an interview Freddie did, and - even though she didn’t even know who he was - her team contacted his to meet up. Freddie was so nervous to meet her and thought she wouldn’t like him, but they stayed up all night together singing at the piano and formed a really close connection. Freddie thought she may want to do one song, but she asked him to write an entire 10-song album, which he did. It started with this, a song about her home city of Barcelona and also the site is the ‘92 Olympics, which it was used for. Freddie told Montserrat that he wouldn’t be around to see those Olympic Games - he said he felt he owed it to her to tell her his AIDS diagnosis, but she said he didn’t owe her anything. They stayed close friends for the rest of his life and really loved each other. She passed away more recently.
As for Michael Jackson, they DID sing together! They never quite finished a song, though. There’s one you can find - State of Shock - a version of which was released with Mick Jagger instead of Freddie back in the 80s, as their schedules made it hard to return to the studio together. Freddie talked about how their were no hard feelings about this in an interview and how friendships were more important than songs for him, but the version he had worked on was remastered recently and is now available on CZcams. There’s also There Must Be More to Life Than This, which I believe they recorded separately and combined, but I may be wrong. It’s not fully polished, but it’s beautiful. Freddie has called him and Michael friends, and Michael came to tons of Queen shows and sat in the back, especially in the 70s. Freddie also used to wear one glove sometimes back in those days. 😉 Michael was also the one who convinced Queen to release Another One Bites the Dust when he first heard it - the band weren’t sure about it! It came out before Billie Jean (one of my favorite songs) and there is definitely some similarities in the beat. He and Freddie had some difficulties in the studio in the 80s, though - Michael once brought his pet llama, and Freddie refused to sing with it there as such a distraction 😂

Freddie's work with Mike Moran on the Barcelona songs & album was proof he could not only sing any genre, he could compose for any genre. I read somewhere that Freddie's assistant said one of the only regrets he heard Freddie express in his last days was that he still had so much music inside of him. And now I'm sad again... 🤯🤯🤯🤯 RIGHT? The backstory of how Freddie & Montsy got together for the Barcelona album is a true love story!! It’s a “must read” for you!! Montsy (Freddie’s nickname for Montserrat) was a soprano opera superstar. Her hometown is Barcelona! The song was used for the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona. But sadly Freddie was unable to perform the song during the opening ceremonies cuz of his passing in 1991. Montsy performed it alone! ☹️ She and Freddie loved each other & had a true musical love affair! There’s a video of her talking about how they met! She passed away a few years ago RIP. "State of Shock" is a 1984 single by the Jacksons featuring frontman Michael Jackson and Mick Jagger. "State of Shock" charted at number 3 on the US Billboard Hot 100, number 4 on the Billboard soul singles charts, and number 14 on the UK Singles Chart. The track was originally sung with Freddie Mercury as a duet with Jackson,[3] and was later slated for the Thriller album; however, due to differing time schedules, Jackson ended up recording it with his brothers and Jagger. Yo soy de Barcelona y me acuerdo que fue todo un acontecimiento está canción, un recuerdo maravilloso y todo un himno en las olimpiadas

This was the third video of yours that I've watched , I know every Queen & Freddie solo material so I don't have to watch the video again , I've been glued watching your expression, I'm so glad you are discovering just like I did way back in 74 . 😁

The performance is spectacular, but it brings me so close to tears that he didn't survive to experience the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, which this song was the the theme for.

What I would give to be there. Some years later BCN still had a light show going on with the song in the same place.

they actually made a record together titled Barcelona. when this was released in 87-88 Freddy told Montserrat that he would not be around to sing it at the opening ceremonies of the 92 Summer Olympics. I think she's one of the only people Freddy told this to. sadly he died in 91 but they did the song on video at the opening ceremonies. Montserrat is from Barcelona

This was the genesis of a new genre. An actual whole new genre. Pavarotti slammed it and ate his own words soon after. Im sure u know by now there is a freddie and michael Jackson song out there.

Kind of breath taking isn't it ? I know the term has been banded about over the years , and many times undeservedly, but Freddie and Queen truly were deserving of the title Genius ! They were to Rock/Pop culture what Mozart was to classical. Freddie and Michael did create a few songs " There must be more to Life than this" There are a few mixes of it on CZcams the one I think is really good is " Freddie Mercury and Michael Jackson- There must be more to life than this (Video Clip) Golden duet "
