LEAD ARM STRAIGHT OR BENT?

  • Over the years a huge problem that I keep seeing with my students is them trying to keep the lead arm straight. I am here to tell you to never force the lead arm straight with irons & driver. Instead, keep it slightly bent with both irons & driver.
    When people force this lead arm straight, as opposed to slightly bent, it locks up not only the arm (so they keep hitting with the arms instead of the body) but they also lock their wrists which slows down the club losing you distance with all clubs.
    I know there are pros who keep the lead arm straight but there are lots that keep it slightly bent it too. I like to refer the lead arm as being extended not locked.
    In this tip, I show you a drill you can be doing with both irons and driver so you can decide if you want to keep the lead arm straight or bent. Do this drill daily so you get used to it. Once you do you will start hitting the golf ball with effortless power so the decision should be quite easy for you to make.

    This was a god send for me. My left arm has been so locked that I can't even release the club. After releasing the tension and allowing it to bend slightly I am hammering the ball. Thanks so much Paul.

    I was skeptical at first. I was governed by the image, from Hogan's book, of both arms extended & locked. Then I tried this. I am less tense at address, my swing became free flowing, my wrists felt looser & hit the ball consistently better. All I can say now is WOW & holy cow!!

    Another great tip Paul. What was really cool was seeing your swing in slow motion. You knew that by allowing us to see your swing tip in slow motion, no one could possibly argue that it didn't produce lag because it most definitely did, and it was right there for all of us to see. Another super tip. Well done Paul, and thanks.

    This drill is GOLD. I saw it in one of your previous videos as a lag drill. I wasn’t chasing lag, so only gave it a couple tries. This time, after putting in just a few minutes, I was amazed at how many lessons this drill holds if you take the time to listen to what it tells you. Balance, How to start the downswing, How to add power with feet / legs, Feeling and accentuating centrifugal force, etc. Anyone considering the purchase of a rope-drill swing aid should save their money & do this. Excellent work Paul.

      It sure is. So many people out there way too tight yet they do nothing to fix it. Why not try something new and not be all stiff. As you see it doesn't take long but it feels weird at first. Keep doing it until you get used to it then you can finally get the arms turn off and use the body for power.

      czcams.com/video/NBgrxz5hSJU/video.html
      czcams.com/video/DPkgxvsy9CA/video.html
      There are just so many ways these days to make the shift. As usual they are making this way too complicated. The latest is to recenter as you start down. They watch pros in slow mo then see the move to the left at the top before coming down. The problem is you have a millisecond to do this. So you get the average player to do this and they come way over the top. Here is my take on recentering:
      czcams.com/video/GhKr6Y8NHGo/video.html
      You already know how to make the shift if you have thrown a ball. Just throw some balls out in front to get the feeling of what to do then apply this feeling:
      czcams.com/video/7z5eUcSwlSk/video.html
      That should keep you busy. Glad you are doing swings indoors. This is what it takes.

      Glad you found me and glad you like the tips. Simple is the key. You just need the right thoughts in transition. Too many people are just hitting. Changing this thought to legs and hips alone will give you a chance to hit perfect shots because then you are at least doing what pros are doing. Here is the most popular and easiest trigger. Start with this until you get the body leading:

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  Před rokem

      Exactly. It doesn't matter and as you see when you force them straight it tightens everything up. Think of a weight on a string. It's flexible. If you started to twirl the weight the string would stretch out 100% of the time. So get to the top. See the whole club as a weight and arms as string. Start your body and let the weight of the club pull your arms out. You will know you're doing it because the club will feel unmistakably heavy when you swing it. Your arms are only so long so if the club stretches them out each time it will repeat. If you want more distance you fire your body harder never hitting anything.

    So I took a lesson with you last December and have been improving, but could never really unlock the "loose arms/use the body" idea. This video finally did it. I went to the range, relaxed my arms at the top of my backswing rather than keeping my lead arm straight, fired by body, and presto: my 230 drives became 250 and 260 drives and my 200 3 wood became a 215 3 wood. It is finally clicking thanks to you and this video. I'm still hooking the ball a little bit, but I think that just means turning the hips quicker, making sure aim is set, and hitting my follow-thru keys more and I'll be there (I hope).

      @paulwilsongolf  Před rokem

      Great to hear from you. So you are who I was thinking about as I shot this tip. I did say tons of my students are trying to force this arm straight. That's great that this made it click. This is a huge breakthrough. As you see anyone can get distance if they loosen up. For you see the good in the hooks (half right). Yes, fire the hips quicker. As you do, watch your ball. It will tell you how much hips you need. Then memorize it for the future. Keep at it.

    Paul, I was once a decent golfer, but admittedly a straight armer. I had a back injury involving surgery and now cannot swing like that. Big bummer to my golf game. I have found your videos and think your system may save me. My back is relaxed along with my arms which I’m beginning to learn how to break. • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  Před rokem +2

      I don't see why it's a bummer to not keep your arm straight at the top. I think you can take it to an even higher level if you break it. Some of the best golfers of all time broke the arm at the top, Nicklaus, Watson, Couples, Count Yogi and of course the guy who's dominating right now Scottie Scheffler. Pretty good golfers on that list. You see how relaxed it is which a good thing and no pain will allow you to swing like this forever. I have seen countless seniors over the years trying to keep it straight (because the were told to) and hit the ball nowhere. It doesn't take long to learn it so stick with it and certainly don't see it as a disadvantage.

To repeat now for umpteenth time, practice swing perfect, then 2 seconds later when hitting ball some chicken swing. I have been calling myself an idiot the past 2 months since I have have been working with driver. Every time at the golf range I tell myself that I cannot continue to be an idiot when hitting ball. Yet constantly an idiot. Regarding distance, still somewhere between 230 and 250 yards when ball hit perfectly, albeit with some chicken swing. No need for reference to other of your videos here. I have watched most of them. My swing is completely loose. Somehow swing when hitting ball lacks an adequate hip turn. Not bad, but not good enough. I am convinced that I will arrive at perfect swing when hitting the ball. However, the chicken swing, albeit now now relatively small, is forced by whatever absurd mental processing that forces the same idiocy.

    Wow...i definitely fall in the camp of trying to force my right arm straight. I have been fighting a loss of power after getting back into golf recently after a 4 year hiatus. Part of it is a lack of flexibility I believe (which I am working on) and the rest is trying to hit the ball with all arms. I figured that if I got a wide back swing and kept my arm as straight as possible that would translate to more club head speed ....but I am starting to realize after watching some of your content that I am way too tense and tight through the arms and shoulders trying to "hit" the ball. Can't wait to get back to the range to try this more loose approach. Funny thing is, years ago I was at the range one evening and just started puring every shot. I remember feeling like I was swinging so loose and easy and feeling the club head. I was so excited I called a friend and told him i had "figured it out" Of course you know what happened...next time we played I couldn't make a shot lol. I prefer straight or falling right (fade) once you get it. If you are drawing it and want the fade then check your grip (neutral). Don't work on rolling it. Fire the lower body. Alignment is slightly left with the face aimed where you want the ball to end up (this means it is preset slightly open). If you aim left ... swing left. The ball will fade due to the face aimed at the target which is open to where you are swinging.

    Great video. Thanks for setting us straight on this. I bend my arm a little on the top of my back swing. I'm 64 y.o. now and have lost some distance from the driver to my wedges. My swing path is somewhat upright and while I have experimented with a flatter swing plane I just cannot hit the ball consistently. Any tips for a 64 y.o. upright swinger shooting in the low eighties? When I was a young buck I held a consistent 5 handicap. My drives are down to about 230 yards when I used to hit 285 to 300 with a wooden driver.

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  Před 2 lety

      I wouldn't change from the upright. I like this type of swing over flat. Works great for many of the greatest of all time. Typically someone in your shoes took a break from golf. When they came back they started hitting with arms. This tightened them up which slows down the clubhead speed. So you really need to get loosening up the arms and wrists first. This is where the speed comes from. You get that then you add body rotation because your arms have to be connected to your body to make them move. I have fixed countless people in this situation and it's easy because they have used their body in the past. I just need to get them using it again. The problem is when the person has never used the body so they are way harder to fix.
      So do this first:
      czcams.com/video/M868QsTlGt4/video.html
      czcams.com/video/p4vASmOzkPg/video.html
      czcams.com/video/N-nGM6yN790/video.html
      czcams.com/video/yHEv7G9Z5-0/video.html
      Get the ball hooking and loose the wrists. Once you can do that you then start firing the lower body harder/quicker/faster to straighten it out. Not sure what your downswing trigger is but something in your legs and hips you use to hit the ball. As you fire the lower you watch your ball. Start off slowly switching to the legs and hips. When you fire the first time you want to get the ball to go from a 30-50 yard pull hook to 10-20. This shows you that firing the legs is straightening it out. If you fire too hard and blow it right this is too hard. You need to go back to rolling again. Ideally, you keep firing more and more until the ball goes dead straight. Once it does, you memorize this feeling and keep firing this hard forever.
      I would be doing lots of swings up in the air firing the lower and listening to the swoosh making it swoosh faster and faster with the arms totally relaxed. This will ingrain the feeling of using the legs and hips for power. So there you go. You now have you plan. Within a few practice sessions 250 should be a no brainer.

      @@paulwilsongolf I put together a longer driver and it had a persimmon head. If I caught it right it would go low and bounce and add thirty yards to my drive. It was best when you needed distance to catch a down slope like on the tenth at Augusta. I watch to see if golfers take their heel off the ground on the backswing. I see most do with the driver and also some come up onto their toes during impact which I'm told further increases speed. Player's trick was to do a thousand situps a day to strengthen his core muscles. It seems odd when you see a little guy get maximum distance. At our club a small guy about five eight drove a 330yard par four and holed the shot. He'd often hit a three wood of the tee and you'd hear the spin on the ball. He'd strengthened his forearms. Another player that's of interest is Bob Shearer who'd put an amazing spin on the ball. Jack Nicklaus commented on the way he'd do this with a wristy action that caught the ball clean on the downstroke. Bob was on a plus six handicap. I played pennant at number four and regularly played the other teams best player as they were looking for an easy win that way. Some of my favorite victories were had by me in those.

The key to this drill for me was maintain extreme wrist cock and keep the trail elbow at the side and turn WITHOUT releasing the wrists or letting the elbow move from the side until AFTER the rotation. If you release your wrists or let the elbow move before fully rotated past the ball, the wrist won't snap.

I’d honestly have a lower score if my short game was better. I’ll keep looking for more videos from you on that front. This was also a great video. Thank you! I have a question though. I use a 10 finger grip and I have a hard time hinging my wrist with this grip. I have tried interlock and overlap grips and my hands just hurt in these positions. Do you have any videos on 10 finger or baseball grips and using your hinge technique? I feel like when I go to hinge, I have to release part of my right hands palm to get that proper position and I don’t feel like that’s right. Any links to your site or videos I could follow?

      Thanks for the kind words and support. I appreciate it. I don't have videos on this grip specifically. I don't like it but I have let a few people get away with doing it. Just need to position the hands I show in my neutral grip video though. Typically when people do a 10 finger they have a super strong right hand. Need this hand on top.

      With this grip your wrists should be able to hinge. Watch this too:

      Also, you need to be doing daily practice swings at home working on this stuff. Do that and you can get it lower in no time.

    Thank you! I can’t keep it straight. I have a little bend and I think I am a pretty good golfer! When I try to keep it straight I am so tight and short!!

      Exactly. Sounds like me. Keeping it straight is wrecking so many swings out there.

    Thanks for your tips Paul. As a beginner, this really helped me. Anyway is there any power difference if we straight or bend or left arm ?

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  Před 8 měsíci

      Well, if you have been forcing it straight and locking your wrists then you allow it to bend a little there is a huge power difference. Most students who come to me are forcing it straight because they have been told to do that. This gets them totally locked. Need to loosen the arms and especially the wrists. Do that and you get serious power with no effort.

    Love the tip Paul. I've played with letting my left arm bend for a long time, but there's a couple things about it that I wonder about. 1. I tend to not grip the club firm, if at all (I let the grip just sit in my hands - I'm lazy I think), as part of the bend, and I think I'm getting sloppy and losing control. Maybe you can direct me to one of your vids that addresses that kind of thing. 2. With the bent left arm, my wrist cups a lot at the top and I cross over quite a bit at the top - sometimes I see my club in my left eye past parallel, kinda like John Daly. Any remedies for those (if needed). Thanks

      You need a secure grip with loose wrists. Follow this one:
      czcams.com/video/Z8K3Gctkz7A/video.html
      To stop the overcupping you need the club running more across your left palm. Follow my neutral grip tip and I talk about it. Impossible to overcup if you hold it the way I suggest. It is not super bent. It is extended but not locked. So extend it and it shouldn't be too long.

    Look at Rocco Mediate head on. Nice relaxed lead arm. Count Yogi as well. Bend in elbow and left wrist.

      Yep, I love Count Yogi. He influenced a ton of golfers including: Mike Austin (he saw Yogi when he was in Chicago), Mike Dunaway, Wild Bill Mehlhorn (he taught with Yogi for 6 years) (best tee to green Hogan ever saw). I would also say Couples, Sheffler, Early Norman (just saw that one the other day). As I find others I will put them on my list.

    Great teacher and if I do that drill it puts me in the perfect follow through position because my arms are turned off hit with your arms and ya don't hit that follow through.

    Thanks. I thought you had to keep your lead arm almost straight/locked. I could not do this comfortably. Good to know I don’t have to.

      A lot of people think that and that's what's holding them back. Stay loose and see what happens.

    Great video and great explanation. One question: My nemesis is a flat swing. When I took this idea to the range, relaxing the arms, I decided to take it as far back, which caused my club to cross the line---and gave me an upright swing! Result: hammering the ball without straining. Is this ok? To cross the line? It seems to give me more easy power with a longer swing arc. Please advise.

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  Před rokem

      Glad you don't want to do the flat swing. It hits it nowhere. So you need the lead arm slightly above the shoulder plane at the top. I don't mind slightly across the line. This is a more powerful position. This is relative to the left hand position at 3/4 back. At this point you need the left hand off the right armpit. Inside the armpit and you will cross. Outside you will be laid off. Ideally down the line or slightly across would be ideal. Watch:

      You only have 1 swing so yes. Remember though it is extended but not locked.

    How much turn do you have to do when you touch the club on your shoulder. Does your back faces the target when you turn while touching the club on the shoulder?

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  Před 2 lety

      You are not really thinking of it. Just turn a little and rest it. If it goes 90 that's fine. You are just trying to get the club parallel. That is what I would be concerned with at this point.
