HOW TO PRACTICE YOUR GOLF SWING (2 Ways)

  • This tip takes you through how to practice your golf swing. Most people would think you just go out and beat a few balls. This is not how pros practice.
    I will show you 2 different ways to practice golf. The first is if you are going out to play and you only have 15-20 minutes. The other is if you are going to go our for a dedicated practice session (where want to practice effectively with a specific purpose in mind, to work on a drill or swing position.)
    Keep in mind, when you are going to learn how to practice your golf swing you are not going to hit every shot perfectly. This is where pros differ from amateurs. Again, these 2 different ways to practice have you not expecting perfect shots. You'll see what I means as I explain it in this golf swing practice tip.
    Try to remember these 2 different ways because they can make or break your round of golf and also remember to practice your golf swing at home. This really is the fastest way to play great golf.

    Good stuff. To keep a structured practice session in focus, I also bring along my timeout chair. It’s a folding camp/sporting event type chair I set up next to my bag. When things get overheated, both physically (Florida heat) or from frustration, I take a timeout to cool off and to reset and reevaluate.

    Great stuff, Paul. You're 100% correct, practice 1 or 2 things and not 10 things on the range. I work on specific things when I'm at home NOT hitting balls to engrain moves/positions so I can practice something else while hitting balls. I find not hitting balls as important... and its free. Now, during rounds, I can tell when I'm swinging differently than when I practice which serves as a reminder to reel myself in and just use my practice swing. Such a process to UN-learn 30 years of bad swings. :D

    "You must hit the sweet spot of the club every time"
    "I wish I could copy your tempo"

    Agree completely with you Paul. A too intense warming up may harm the actual performance in the course. Once I warmed up by smashing 50 balls at a course range (and unfortunately they only provide mat not grass), and I remember that disastrous round after the warm up which I felt the fatigue, and since different feel between mat and grass, most impact I made with the ball were ugly. Hence, I never do that again ever. I even could always have nice round even without hitting balls warm up. My warm up is only adequate stretching, and few swings without balls before tee off. It’s always good for me that way. And here where I live, for weekend/amateur golfer, we do not always use to have range session before a round, since a unique fact that some (maybe majority) of people in my country do not fancy hot burning sunny day. It is common here to tee off on 5.30 - 5.45 am. So assuming a round in the morning, If we could start earlier, we would finish faster before the south east asian sun burns.

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  Před 2 lety +1

      Yes, I know what you mean about the heat. For you it's the humidity. Very low here so even though it's hot it's not bad. With humidity it is super hot. So be careful out there. I think you understand how to warm up. Keep doing it.

  • @Jam9151
    @Jam9151 Před rokem

    When warming up before I round I’m trying to get loose as you mentioned and also trying to see what type of ball flight I’m getting for the day. Usually it doesn’t change but sometimes my hybrids and woods will go from a fade to a draw so I like to see what they are doing on the day to make it easier to aim when on the course. I’ll also use the last 3/4 balls to play the first hole in my mind. Driver, 7 iron, 40 yard pitch. Pretending I’m on the first hole then I go putt and try and out everything together when I get to the first tee

      You warm up with SW hitting short easy shots getting longer and longer. I go from SW to 8 or 9 iron doing easy full swings. Then once I am warmed up I go to 7 or 6 iron to work on my swing. As I work on my swing I put down the alignment stick. If you are pulling it you are hitting with arm. Turn them off and get the lower body moving first.

      You need to hit driver. It is super easy. Right now you don't know where you are going to hit it. It's going everywhere. So you need to do my roll over drills and get every ball hooking. Then we know what you are going to do before you do it. Hit the top and roll it. Do this with arms. Do the roll over drills at home daily until mastered. This is half right. You have the spin. Once you can do that you work on starting the downswing with the legs and hips to straighten it out:

Do I need to release my wrists through more? I don’t have this issue with my set PW in the slightest. Leaves a huge gap in my set

      Yeah, funny how this happens some times. I have fixed people in the past doing this. 10 mins. You need to do my roll over drill early and hit low pulls. Once you can do that you are de-lofting it. Then go back to firing the legs and hips to straighten it out. Simple. I would think you are either playing it too far forward or trying to hit hard so you are getting a bit of chicken wing which is adding loft. See how you do with my fix.

    I have always had a real problem connecting the club face with the ball because I go through periods of opening my wrist at the top of my backswing. It leads to hitting the ball right and often shanking. Is there a way to stop this ? Never been a consistent iron player and I guess at 74 I never will.

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  Před 2 lety

      Not sure why you feel you are open at the top. Maybe rolling it open in the takeaway? Poor grip? Whatever you are doing you are open when you hit the ball. Why not close it when you hit the ball? This would be stronger position as slice spin is going to get you nowhere fast. Follow these:
      czcams.com/video/M868QsTlGt4/video.html
      czcams.com/video/p4vASmOzkPg/video.html
      czcams.com/video/N-nGM6yN790/video.html
      czcams.com/video/yHEv7G9Z5-0/video.html
      Tee it up. Use a 7 iron and do that until you rarely ever put slice spin on it. Once you can do that (1 to 3 practice sessions) then you switch to using your body to power your swing.
      Most popular/easiest trigger:
      czcams.com/video/RdphthCQ9VM/video.html
      Keep firing the lower body until you hit it straight. If you fire the lower and pull/pull hook need to fire sooner. Push/push fade this is too hard. I you slice it go back to step 1 and get it hooking.

    I do some stretching. I chip and putt for about 15 to 20 minutes. Then swing a few irons without going to the range or using a ball. Same with a hybrid. Then a fairway wood. The driver. Only 4 or 5 swings with each club. I've played my best golf when I do that. I've come to the conclusion that the range ruins my game b4 a round. When I'm not playing I will go to the range with a purpose. To work on a specific part of my game. It works for me. It might not be the best thing for everyone.

    Paul, I notice that you don’t wear a glove. Have you always played gloveless? What type of grips are on your clubs?

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  Před 3 měsíci

      Gloveless since I was 16. I was going through a glove a week. They were $16 each. Couldn't afford to wear one. Now the synthetic gloves are pretty good so I would have used those instead of expensive leather ones for practice. I have standard Tour Wrap R60 grips. The cheapest ones and last the longest. Super tacky so those with no glove works great.

      I don't have a ton of short game tips posted. It's a fine line with what I give away. I have a membership site where people pay for access so it's not really fair to them if I give everything away. Plus, I do a short game tip and no one watches it (crazy).

    Well Paul, you touched on a rude reality and that is, I don't put enough hours into practice in the first place. I might practice 1-2 times a week. I need to develop a regimen that actually gives me a chance to inure change. Even if it isn't 7 days a week, I should be able to do 4 - 5, if I expect a return on investment.

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  Před 2 lety

      Yes, you are like most golfers. You need to do swings daily to get it. This is why I keep saying daily practice swings. Start with 25 per day. I easily do 100 per day. Do a few numerous times a day and you can easily get there too.

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  Před 2 lety

      Need to be confident in the move then think target not swing. If you are trying to analyze what you are doing it won't work. Be confident in the changes and keep doing the same thing for a month until it settles in. Then use my tip to clear your mind:
      czcams.com/video/d9qjTrotjpk/video.html
      Also, you need to watch your ball to tell you exactly what to work on to fix your own swing. This is what I teach and have taught since 1991. I am the guy who wants you to do this without me. Isn't that the goal?

    Hi Paul; here's something to add to this point you're making for the warm-up when you hit some putts before playing. I stopped putting at holes on the practice green & concentrating on getting the speed of the greens because putting to a hole & trying to make them can affect your course expectations as well. If you're not making putts on the practice green, you may take a negative putting thought to the course. I just go to different areas on the green & putt to the fringes to gage the speed & not worry about reading lines to holes because speed is more important anyway. I'd appreciate your thoughts on this. Be well.

    my problem sometimes is instead of playing golf i'm playing golf swing at times, worrying too much about making perfect swings or experimenting with other ideas if things don't go well.

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  Před 2 lety

      Been there. It's super tough to bring those thoughts to the course. Recently I was making some swing changes. I was trying numerous things. Basically what I did was video my swing trying each new thing. I would then see what make the most impact to my swing and what I could physically do. Through the process of elimination I made the decision. Now I just keep doing that until mastered. Maybe you do the same thing. At some point you have to be confident in what you are doing and keep doing it.

    Another great video, Paul - thank you! I don't know if this is the proper forum to ask you this, but I am not sure how else to do it - I am a senior golfer and received in my email your offer for $77 to a plethora of good stuff - my question is what will I receive that is different from the already fantastic videos you have produced over the years? I ask this very respectfully. As a senior, my income is of course fixed and I have to be somewhat frugal with my spending. I am not destitute, but would love to have a better understanding of your $77 package. Thank you in advance!

    I'm a definite range merchant. Hit it like a 10 HCP of the mats. Get on the course, and shoot 110. I think it's mental with me. It's very disheartening

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  Před 2 lety

      Yeah, stop. You are wasting your time. Hit 1 bucket doing practice swings inbeteween. The problem on the course is you are going there will distance thoughts trying to kill it. You don't so you start over thinking everything. Next time play your round not thinking about or looking at distance targets. Pick something close or way far away in the distance. Then swing at no more than 50% on all shots. Do this too:
      czcams.com/video/d9qjTrotjpk/video.html
      I guarantee you will hit amazing shots if you do that. What do you have to lose? 1 round then let me know.

    • @laynelommen9460
      @laynelommen9460 Před 6 měsíci

      Honest question. It feels correct body tilt at impact lets me fully extend my arms all the way through the swing.

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Keep in mind that if you are hitting with your arms you will cast the club and your body will be leaning forward as you start down as well. Is the body tilt from lag? The body tilt occurs when you are not pulling the club down with the arms and initiating with the lower body. I talk about it here:
      czcams.com/video/BzBgiUhyrB4/video.html
      So I don't think that's a true statement. I've seen plenty of people swing out at it (need the tilt to swing out at it) and they don't have lag.
      If you want lag in minutes then do this and video your swing:
      czcams.com/video/syZXIyJNH-Y/video.html
      Do this drill and it will fix both issues:
