Effortless Golf Swing - How I Turned My Arms Off

  • If you're looking for an effortless golf swing you've some to right place. I have literally been teaching this type of swing since 1991. This tip explains what I felt the day I turned my arms off. Once I did I literally went from hitting the ball sideways to straight. In other words I become consistent after literally 10 years of taking lessons and trying everything.
An effortless golf swing is a swing for life. Sure, young tour pros are swinging as hard as they can using both their body and arms. Most people will never be able to do this swing. So why not learn and effortless swing. It creates great power with no effort, it's super consistent and it never hurts your body. You play pain-free for life.
Have you not marveled at a golfer who hits it a long way and it looks effortless? So if you want that swing this is a great thought on how to get it. This is the thought I had to completely turn my arms off and stop hitting hard. The day I got this was game changing. Give it a try and hopefully you too can get an effortless golf swing.

I've watched every one of your videos at least once, and most of them several times. This one really resonated with me. You hit bad golf shots for 10 years--I hit bad golf shots for 55+years! You said "nobody every told me...". Same for me (and I had several sets of lessons over the years from golf pros--they never told me). I hit as many as 24,000+ golf balls in one year (I keep lots of spreadsheets) and never got any better. I've played 5,000+ rounds of golf since 1980. I was the original public golfing hacker! But just about 10 years ago I ran across your videos. Today is my birthday (85) and I can say I'm a better golfer today than I ever was. I've shot my age or better 203 times since you taught me how to swing a club. It has been a hard transition to turn the arms off when they were my sole source of power for so many years. So even though I'm getting old enough that most of my athletic skills are gone, the techniques you've taught me still keep me mostly on the short grass. I hope to get still better!

Watched many Paul Wilson videos. Then bought his course. Buy it! $99ish, less than one lesson. When I do what he says, I do fine. The rest of the time I think I know what I am doing and I try to “hit” it. I try to invoke Paul. ‘Dear St. Paul, please be with me on this swing”. 😅

I’m 65 and I’ve been watching your videos off and on for a little while. I watched this one last night and decided to try it today. I hit every drive solid probably as far as I was hitting it trying to swing hard. I hit maybe 2 bad shots all day. I was shocked. It was great fun. Playing in league tomorrow and we’ll see if it works again but I’m pretty confident it will. Thanks a million. Will continue to watch all of your videos

Golf is almost over for us here in Wisconsin. I have been hitting the ball poorly the last month or so. Today was probably our last time out till next year. It was 65 degrees....so, very nice for this time of year. I decided to watch this video of yours before my round. And I shot my best round of the year!! A 76...not bad for a 70 year old gal. All i thought about was keeping my arms turned off, and it made such a huge difference. I hit all my clubs better. It seemed by doing this, it forced me to use my body more, which I never have been good at doing...Thank you so much!! I'm hoping I don't lose this thought before the next golfing season. Your tips are the best, and you keep it simple, which is so important for us old people!

Wow! That's great. Glad you turned the arms off. I keep saying it. Well, you heard me and played a great round. Yes, turn the arms off and you need another power source (body). You won't lose it. Just do some practice swings a few times a week throughout the winter. This is what I have my students do and they start off hitting it great. So glad you are doing well. Thanks for the support.

Ive been binge watching your videos since I've been getting frustrated with my game after little improvement over the past 5 years of playing (rarely breaking 100). After absorbing everything i could, i started swinging in the backyard, and it felt so effortless and natural. Previously all of my joints were stiff in an effort to control the face of the club, and it never felt natural. What made it click for me was your analogy about swinging a heavy piece of wood compared to having a hinge in it. Amazing.

@@paulwilsongolfI went to the range and hit my irons pure and straight every single shot. I wanted to weep because I was getting to the point of possibly giving up on golf but this one change made it so much easier. The only thing I changed was using my wrists instead of keeping everything stiff, which naturally shifted my weight forward as it should.

I got an orange whip a long time ago but never really put it into practice. Saw these videos from you and then I started using my orange whip to practice swinging this way. I'm finally hitting my driver well. It's like it clicked overnight. I'm not hitting 300 yards or anything crazy but usually a consistent 230 and have had an occasional 270. Hoping once I get more and more comfortable with the swing that I can start adding some more power. Really happy I've found your videos.

Dear Paul, the picture of the speedometer, slowing down from 100 to 0 in the downswing works incredibly well for me. The vast majority of amateur golfers is probably more than aware of the instruction „Refrain from hitting the ball as hard as you can“. However, it’s a big difference between „intellectually understanding“ and „successfully implementing“. Great teachers like you, perfectly know that and literally go the extra mile to offer additional support for their students, in this case, the speedometer concept👏🏼🥇👍🏼. Please keep up the great work, best wishes from Germany🇩🇪.

Thanks for the support. To get it you just have to hear me. STOP HITTING GOLF BALLS. The ball is the problem. You want to hit. I want you to not hit. You keep doing this stuff with golf balls you keep hitting. See the disconnect. Watch my previous tip. Do it for 1 week ONLY in practice swings. Need to do it daily as many swings as possible. czcams.com/video/LAejvDbw_aA/video.html This will be enough time to get the feeling and concept so you can repeat it. I took a student from 95 to 75 in 2 months he never hit one practice ball. He only did practice swings. I literally gave him a 10 minute lesson per week. Anyone can do this. Just need to stop hitting golf balls for a while.

Driver is easy. Just need to roll it from the top and get it hooking. This is half right. Problem is I try to get people to hook it and they keep trying to hit perfect shots. Get half (release) then get the other half (body). Everyone wants it all right away which will never work.

This video triggered an emotional response in me and resonates with me greatly, especially @ 2:23 when you describe your moment of discovery. After years of frustration trying everything with endless hours in the range and still hitting left or right, I recently had this discovery as well. Second shot on the 14th hole of my home course I decided not to use my arms. The result was straight, high, far, with zero effort. I decided to try this again and got the same result. Then I continued to do this thereafter. However, I just played a game where I thought I could help the ball ever so slightly, but my arms started to become engaged again. Result, not good at all. This was humbling and made me realize that you never really have this game figured out. Golf is a learning journey which is why I'm watching this video now and using it reinforce good behavior. Absolutely great video!

My swing has developed over the years to the point where my arms do nothing in the downswing other than follow my body turn.
I hold off the clubface a little depending on what sort of shot I want and where I am on the fairway.

Now I recently bought into the Body Swing lessons with full commitment and this is the real deal. After practicing his grip, setup, and 4 key positions at the range and at home I finally took it to the course. I seriously got a glimpse of how much my game improved and where it can potentially go. Ofcourse it wasnt perfect as I failed to apply his key positions from time to time but when i did I'd have to say I've never hit shots so straight, far, and effortless in my life. I was in awe. Thanks man I appreciate all the free content you provide. You do a wonderful job!
I was recently fit for some new irons graphite etc for distance and less wear and tear on the body, then I pivoted over to your swing videos and my swing has been tremendous. I had another sessions today, driver, 7 iron and 9 iron. I played holes like I was on the course but made sure I had my arms turned off and made sure my wrist cocked at the top, then used my lower body to initiate the downswing and wow, the power and consistency was unreal. Side note. I love how you train us to get into the backswing, it gives me a lot of time to get into my left side when I am transitioning and it helps with low point control and compression
As you stated in your videos the driver was a little tougher to get down, but that is because you want to smash it. Once you relax and "smooth" through the shot I was crushing mid to low flight balls that had a ton of roll at the end of them. Straight or a little fade. Irons are impressive as well, full back swing turned off arms and release through. It was unreal.
    Thanks brother appreciate you.

So glad you are doing it. Super exiting when you get it. Then in dawns on you that all these years were a complete waste of time. Now you are on track keep at it and let it settle in. Club companies will do anything to sell you clubs so for years they had it out there that graphite will save your arms. Less shock. Great for seniors etc. Now you see you could play with anything. Without hitting the swing never hurts so you can literally play with anything. Not that graphite aren't fine. Just saying they will do anything to sell clubs. This is why I buy my own. I have said every since I started teaching they should be helping people learn how to swing. If they did, they would have a customer for life. Oh well, I guess I just need to do what I do and one day maybe everyone will stop hitting hard. Keep up the good work.

It is new and different. You need to understand why then get used to some new feelings. The problem is people always want to hit their best shots so they always swing as hard as they can. You need to swing at no more than 50%. This will hit the ball almost as far if not farther than your 100%. Get it easy then speed up your body for more power.

If I only knew then what I know now I would have had it back in days/weeks. Now I tell people to stop hitting balls. So 200 for anyone is too much. Just do way more practice swings then a few balls. It’s pure coincidence I saw this video today. I just had the same revelation. I was pretty good in my mid to late 20s and and played with a very soft flex driver, but I would kill the ball in the fairway all day. One day, I changed the grip on the driver and accidentally cracked the shaft. I had a local guy put a new shaft in it(I knew nothing about club fitting). The new shaft was beyond extra stiff. It changed my whole swing on every club. I began to apply force in all the wrong places and have struggled for 20+ years not knowing why. I’m 51 now and tried not using my arms today. It was hitting EVERYTHING longer and straighter. I’m so excited to play more but I live in Illinois and it’s November 9th! Better late than never!

Keep hearing...."club head speed! club head speed!" No no no I keep telling myself. Easy...slow motion....50% power. When I do it, it's magic. IT WORKS. Slice is gone and it's long. When I try to impress my golf partners with a hard swing....here comes the slice. Stop it !! I'm swinging the driver two feet above the floor in the living room a few times a day. I see the club, I pick it up and swing a few. The consistency is slowing coming. Thanks Paul!

This was years ago when I was young. Now I realize this was just a waste of time. Now I would tell people to do way more practice swings working on something instead of hitting balls. People have to realize they are not pros. Most people learned as adults which creates an arms swing versus kids who use their body. So turning your arms off will get the body moving. Once you get good at it you speed up the body. I think you get it. Just keep at it and you will get it. Practice swings and more practice swings as I suggest.

Paul Wilson & followers! I've learned a lot from you Paul! Besides everything else! It's about trusting the process and turning the arms off. Even when you think the arms are turned off, sometimes they are not! I don't really notice if my arms are totally turned off , until the transition/rotation. That's when I can actually feel my body controlling my arms. Even the bad shots aren't that bad when you get that feeling, because you'll say...ok I'll take that. This might help someone out. It's something that everything in you has to trust! Because it will be a discouragement if you mess up . And that's when the arms will slowly start back taking over.

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  Před 10 měsíci +1

You are correct. Not sure I have ever seen anyone loose enough in 33 years of teaching. For sure turning the arms off produces way better misses. This is because you are not twisting the face as much as if you were trying to hammer it hard so that is a bonus. Trust is huge too. I say this all of the time. You need to give up all control of the club. New feeling associated with doing that that people don't like. So you need to get used to it. It's not going to come in 3 balls. Give it a bucket and you will start to see some good ones which should tell you that you should keep doing it.

I can relate to so much you've said in this video. No one ever told me not to swing with my arms. I've had a few lessons recently and my instructor did not tell me this. I'm an armsy swinger and I've only just realized this. I've always believed you were supposed to swing with your arms. At 2:48 when you said your thing was trying to accelerate with the club, this has been my thing too. I thought I was supposed to do that. It's very frustrating looking back that no one told me any of this, especially my golf instructor. Just in the last two weeks, prior to finding your videos, I realized I had an armsy swing and I realized I'm not supposed to. So I've been looking at videos on how to fix this. I came across your channel and found several videos on how to rotate the body more and how not to use your arms. I wish I found these videos sooner. Just wanted to say thank you for saying what others are not saying. Seems like it should be the first thing said to any new golfer and on any video telling folks how to fix their swing. I'm already seeing great improvements in both distance and accuracy. Took my 9 iron from 105 yards to 135 yards overnight. And mostly straight as an arrow. Again, thanks. Subscribed and liked

Glad you found me. At some point people have to realize that hitting with the arms is not going to work. I think you are there now. So try to turn them off. If you fire your body your arms aren't going to stay up there forever. They will come down. You get the power through a loose hinge (wrists). The inconsistencies when hitting come from twisting the face through impact. Twist the face just a few degrees and you will hit the ball sideways. I allow the forces acting on the mass to square the face. I just let it go knowing it will square withing the few degrees necessary to hit a good shot. You should watch these:

I agree totally with what you are saying Paul. I want to be able to play golf into my seventies. I have spent hours at the range trying to get my ball speed over 155mph with a driver. I have been trying to accelerate as hard as I can from the top of the backswing. I am 55 years old, and I injured a ligament on the inside of my right knee ( I feel sure it was because of me forcing my arms and whole body to generate a faster swing speed ). I have maxed out at 153 mph ball speed. I tried to hit balls using your method and I reached 153 mph ball speed without any effort!! I see all the younger guys at the range trying to hit the spots off the ball. I think the problem is that we watch the top guys like Rahm, Mcllroy, and Scheffler all getting ball speeds of 170+ mph and we want to hit like them. What we don't always take into consideration is that they are younger, go to the gym to strengthen and work on body speed, and they will get injured from time to time because of what they are putting their bodies through. A powerful effortless swing is the way to hit far and straight and enjoy the results. Thanks Paul.

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  Před 10 měsíci

Glad you see what I am getting at. I know everyone is trying for distance. From day 1 I said Dechambeau will never dominate and I was right. The longer you hit it the less room for error you have. 300-320 straight no more unless the hole is wide open. Yes, they are younger but more importantly they all learned as kids. Huge difference. Now you see that effortless hits it just as far you need to stick to this. I call it more in the tank. If you can do nothing and hit as far as your hardest you have more in the tank to go farther. With the hard one you are maxed out. So you want serious power? Do these 2 drills daily for 30 days. Then let me know how you are doing. Do them as much as possible.

This video says to me, golf is very hard and you better let the club do what it naturally wants to do, or you will probably give up this beautiful game called golf. What made this Paul Wilson swing work extremely well for me, the double overlap grip. Without the double overlap grip, my right hand was always trying to force the club into unnatural movements and not much consistency or power. I was a follower many years ago. Few issues with his stuff. The weight shifting to take it back is not necessarily going to work for some. It gets you too far off the ball. You need the coil as well. I line it off the toe. If you watch his swing from down the line he said the arms would stretch out due to the inertia pulling the arms out. This happens but you will see his head moves forward as he goes back so is it inertia stretching it out to hit the center of the ball? Not sure about that one. Because I have done it for so long I feel crowded with the ball in the center of the face.

Agree! I'm working on this concept myself. I think the great optical illusion of a golf swing is our brain thinks we see the arms adding force to club. Adding arm force ruins the natural physics and momentum. I have this all over my notes and yet I still have to fight my brain when arms force starts creeping back in over time.

I see. You really need to be working legs and hips as well. It is about how quick you can fire them that will give you the power as you get the club set at the top. So super loose wrists. Then fire the lower. Watch me do nothing and get it to 100mph:
      czcams.com/video/Q_LW7nm4ssk/video.html
There my arms are a zero. Then I just turn my hips. I am not turning my fastest but basically that felt like nothing to me. So we need this as the image to build you back up. Obviously, my hips are rotating and open as I hit the ball. I would think you are just facing the ball as you hit it. When people do that they are just using arm strength which will never hit it anywhere. So hinge and rehinge to loosen the wrist joint. Then attach this arm unit to your rotating body.

Paul is not the only one on CZcams that has some good advice, and good teaching. However, he is one of the easiest to begin to see forest clearing before you. It takes quite a bit for most of us to get it, and likely most of us will not get it to Paul's level (obviously, he's a pro). My suggestion is to hold an iron in your living room, and notice how that club face wants to turn and point downward if you hold it parallel to the ground. The club is made to turn by itself, and use momentum to add more speed etc....using your arms, especially when you're just trying to smash it, is actually going to slow down your swing. I've been listening and watching Paul's videos/lessons and watching replays of Tom Watson's swing. I am enjoying golf more than ever right now at 60 years of age--7 handicap. Hopefully I can get to a 5 again, like I was in my 30s. We'll see.

I do not leave my swing completely loose, then let my hips' movement pull me forwrd, as I do automatically with practice swings. Even with chicken swing, when I hit the ball on the nose, maybe 230 yards or so. I should be hiting 250 yards plus. I will seriously consider taking your on-site lesson in the fall of 2024. Somewhat pricey at several thousand dollars, but may be worth it. I still want to have eliminated the chicken swing completely. Then you can help on more useful techniques. Yes, I remember the Whippy Tempomaster. We had one at our club and we would take turns hitting it off the first tee. The newer version is the Orange Whip. Is this going to give you a great swing? No. It's fine to use it if you want but if it developed great swings everyone would have one. Yes, I want centrifugal force. This is mass (club) swinging around an axis (body). I want people to completely turn their arms off as they come down and through to the follow through. You power the swing with your legs and hips not hands and arms. Takes understanding, getting used to new feelings and a little practice. Every thing I teach is based on this but I would do this drill:

We are a rare breed. Most people hit a few and go play. Stick with me and I will get you there. My swing is simple and effective. Just need to understand it and get used to a few moves. The Body Swing is what I teach my students. Along with the grip and set up I teach 4 positions. That's it. Get those and you will look like a tour pro. They have the right fundamentals. In other words to me it is the shape of the swing. Need to look like a great player to become one. I don't want people to hit a ton of balls while learning it. Just do daily practice swings for a month or two. Make the changes then add more balls. The ball is the problem. People want to keep whacking away while I need them to do moves. So get rid of the ball. You can play and work on your short game but don't hit too many balls. Do this and you will get it super-fast. I took a guy from 95 to 75 in 2 months he never hit one ball but he did the practice swings. Thanks in advance for the support.

We are swinging the club in balance to a full finish position in an area where the golf ball happens to be. We are taking advantage of the stationary ball versus making it an enemy. I'm not big on saying my arms are powerless. They are involved in the balanced swinging motion. The key for me was not hitting at the ball and focusing solely on the swing itself. It's not easy to reprogram. I started by hitting 6 irons of a tee with my eyes closed. This made me realize it was possible not to be ball bound. I'll note I went to an open field to make sure everyone was safe lol. Interesing that within 10 attempts I was stripping it. I then progressed to squinting just to see the ground for reference. Then I ended up with what I believe Bobby Jones referred to as a fuzzy ball where I was just looking at an area around the ball but definitely not focusing on it. This was not a one bucket transformation cuz that's a myth. Lots of practice. It was more of a challenge working with difficult lies but the principles are the same. Can't be trying to apply the clubhead only. A full swing of the entire club mechanism is necessary. I noticed my swing shape totally changed. My hand path followed a nice tight arc around my rotation. I learned to use my turn to release the club versus a flip. But I definitely did notice my arms way less involved to your point. Great video. Big fan for a while.

I had a golf lesson the other day and my instructor said i wasnt rotating around my tail bone enough so that my hips werent working, i guess using your hips more is the same thing as turning off your arms in the golf swing. After doing this for awhile i was seeing my shots go considerably straighter and being more consistent, they werent straight all the time but it was a much higher percentage.

Well, not really the same thing but if you arms are turned off you would need to use your body to power the swing. Need to learn to loosen your wrists and work on releasing the club so when you couple it with the hips you are doing it right and generating serious power. So keep firing the hips but also keep the wrists super loose.

@@paulwilsongolf Worked it today at the range -- slowly getting the feel. I still review the materials in the
Body Swing package I purchased -- and each of your videos gets me closer. This video really helped me with the swing thought to slow down the transition -- felt more 'snap' at the bottom -- those swings gave that effortless swing feeling you have been 'harping' us on -- don't stop. Thank You!

Very good. Keep doing daily practice swings hitting the positions and looking for the feedback. This is the fastest way to get it. You seem close so got to keep doing it.
