How To Hit The Golf Ball Straight (Simple Thought)

- Do you want to learn how to hit the golf ball straight? I would think so. Here is a simple thought that I had many years ago that took me from hitting it sideways to straight.
If you have been learning how to hit the golf ball straight what have you done in the past? I bet you have been trying to square the face at impact. Seems logical right? The problem is, you twist the clubface just a few degrees and you will hit the ball everywhere. I tick on a clock is 6 degrees. You don't have 6 degrees. With driver you have 1-3 degree based the less error the farther you hit it. With irons you would have more room for error. So if you are trying to square the face just by squaring the face that will never work.
Here is the thought I figured out many years ago that taught me how to hit a golf ball straight. It's simple and works very well. Watch this tip and get the mental image of what I did then try it yourself and see if it helps you hit the ball straight like it did for me.

Thank you for all your videos. You are an incredible teacher.
Glad you like them! Thanks for the support. I appreciate it.
Paul you're the best ! Simple is key. Let's enjoy the game!! Ps. Your 10 year journey of discovery sure makes me feel better. Thanks for sharing !😅
Thanks so much. Glad you see it. Simple is the key for sure. Yeah, it was a nightmare. This is why people should listen. I have done more than anyone. This was daily for 10 years not once a week.
This is amazing. Very easy understand to the club head path. Thank you.
Glad you liked it. Thanks so much. Sometimes it's just seeing it differently that makes it click.
Thanks Paul. I love the simplicity of this as it’s all about feel and removing the desire to control with the arms which is lethal. Find it so hard to maintain this discipline when I hit stray shots on the course. All the best
Glad you liked it. This was a simple but effective thought for me. Like I said I get stupid and start trying to hammer it. When I do I just go back to this thought. The next ball is back to straight.
Well said, Paul. And right on track, too, as usual!
There you go. Now you're getting it.
Paul, thanks a lot for all your help!
You're welcome.
Pure gold, how did I miss this one? Paul, I finally have my neutral grip dialed in... for "me". Learning to NOT manipulate the club face with this relaxed body swing is making golf very different for me. My shot shape is now, almost dead straight. This video parallels your speedometer video beautifully. Thank you so much.🤟
This is gold for sure. Glad it is making sense. Keep at it.
You’re the man Paul!!
Thanks for the support. I appreciate it.
Another great tip Paul 👍
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks.
Paul, i want to say i was as close as a natural golfer as they come. Started when i was 13 and hit the ball straight. Got lessons and started “playing golf” when i finished high school golf i took 2 years off from golf, came back and struggled with certain “feels”. You by far helped me the most in my game with your teachings. I shoot way better then I did in high school due to your teachings. The Arms need to die to hit it straight. I know exactly what i do when i pull it left, i brought my arms in and was stiff. Then i know how to fix it, really amazing.
So glad you are with me and doing well. Taking a break is a huge problem. I have helped countless people get it back. Yes, the key is not hitting. Hitting is easy so everyone does it plus human nature is telling you to hit the object. Until you want to learn a different way and go against human nature you will never get it. You are well on your way now. Keep at it.
I took 5 years off due to an accident and then started golfing again. It was like I have never played this game in my life. I lost control of my driver and finally got my iron shots back.@@paulwilsongolf
So irons are okay driver is still bad?
@@paulwilsongolf so funny enough driver is one of the best parts of my game. However I still use the “swing hard” technique, most of the time, just because I have the timing and feel down. When i use “dead arms” with the driver I block a lot of tee balls a little right, just because the club face is struggling to get around. For me, when I think “smooth tempo driver” I hit it great with little effort, my arms aren’t dead, however my hands a quiet. i just struggle to trust it sometimes. However, you are Right once again. All my best and longest drivers are alway the ones I try the least. I know I am essentially saying the same thing, but the feel from driver to iron is slightly different for me. I also wanted to say, you made the game of golf easy and fun for me. I always had the ball striking ability but couldn’t put rounds together. I now regularly shoot in the 70’s. I was always the longest hitter growing up, now i hit the ball the shortest out of everyone, and score the lowest. Let the club do the work, and golf becomes easy. When i stopped trying to “get it there” is when i realized how ego is the biggest issue with amateurs. They want to “flush it” and they think swing harder. I realized 95% of amateurs never want to club up, and it blows my mind they would rather muscle a club to the green rather than club up and swing easy.
That is why you need to watch this tip:
czcams.com/video/bLskGy7rulo/video.html
If you want a little more that is how to do it.
This tip is an awesome one, AGAIN, Paul. Combo this with your 50 % tip and you have a solid base for sweet contact that doesn't have you coming out of your shoes. Thanks !!
Glad you liked it. Thanks. Yeah, everything I teach fits together. Powerful, effortless and pain-free is the goal.
👍👍great video and clear explanations
Glad you think so! Simple is the key.
@@paulwilsongolf if it’s complicated I get messed up
OMG, Paul totally has it right. After having watched his videos and practicing, so long as I have my grip set correctly, I just swing easy and through and the ball goes perfectly straight. All my pulls or pushes are simply because I didn't turn my shoulders or finish the full swing. If I do, it goes perfectly straight every single time.
Very good. You see it and have experienced it. Great feeling when you get it for sure.
@@paulwilsongolf ...and it takes LESS effort. I have made what I consider a breakthrough lately. My swing thought is to "throw" the club back, allow the coil tension to build, and then it seems like I have a lot of time in the follow through to be target centric and think about where the shot is going (even though it is about 1/4 of a second in the downswing). I have been hitting more fairways and greens, easy swing, and way more distance. The other day I parred 5 consecutive holes and missed par on the sixth hole by inches. My consistency is way better when I don't stand over the ball too long, rather I swing it back and let it go. I think most golfers have this instinctive feel, they just dwell too much over the ball and "get in their head" too much. That is, they have the basic skill, but are hesitant to "let it go" and swing freely. Paul's teachings/methods are definitely on point and very impactful.
Thank you very much Paul
Glad you liked it. Thanks.
Excellent
Glad you liked it. Thanks.
I added in more "wrist compression" the last few days. Something you've teached on occasion. Made a big difference for loose wrists, hinge and re-hinge, and ball speed increased.
Very good. Let's get you hitting it huge! Loosen those wrists.
@@paulwilsongolfHopefully I can get to the range this week early morning, before the 100+ heat sets in. Camera, SC200+ and I are hopefully going to make mince meat of a few golf balls. I might even sacrifice a few TP5x balls to get some true ball data, because the range balls don't give great feedback.

Thank you Paul! You've helped me much. Quick question...I'm having trouble separating my upper body from my lower. On the downswing. Do you have a feel or drill to make sure I'm doing it right? Thank you
Gabe
Glad you are doing well. Thanks for the support. Separation takes work that few seem to want to do. This is the big difference between pros and ams. Keep in mind pros learned as kids. With minimal arm strength the body fires first arms follow. Instant separation. As an adult you have arm strength so you want to hit. This means you get to the top and pull the club down resulting in you facing the ball as you hit the ball. No separation. So you need to understand your arms need to be turned off completely. Do the drills below every day in as many practice swings as you can.

Hey Paul, just had knee replacement on my knee. Can you send me something that would work for my knee please? I watch all your videos every day. Ok I’m waiting! Lol
Well, I have taught countless people with fake knees and they do just fine. So just keep following along. There is nothing radical I need you to do other than heal up. Then slowly get back into it. It is more of a psychological issue with new knees. Once you realize you can do all moves without issue you will accept them.
Thanks Paul
So from top of the backswing one should fire the hips and let the arms swing through the ball to the target without any manipulation
You've got it. Hit it with your legs and hips and just let the club go. Watch this too:

In the hinge and re-hinge of the wrists, this brings along some forearm rotation as well? If I am mis-timed on that, would that affect the club face angle?
Did your online Body Swing course. Last week shot my best 9 hole score ever, 38, 2 over par. Back nine, my ego and good front nine got in the way! Things are coming along!
You are using simple physics to square the club. Mass (club) will always want to swing to the widest point right if you did not disturb the mass? 100% of the time right? The club is mass. If your wrists are loose and you do nothing to the club it would stretch out to the widest point 100% of the time. If you start with a neutral grip and your lead arm stretched out you pre-determined the face is a square with your arm stretched out. So all you have to do is nothing. These tips explain it:

I really like this tip Paul. As you said when you set up stretch out your lead arm with a square clubface. This is crucial because as you have stated before when you unwind with your knees and hips centrifugal force will stretch out your arms, and since you have already stretched out your lead arm at address with a square clubface you have already given yourself a pretty good chance of having a square clubface at impact. I can't wait to try this out at the range and have this as my key swing thought just before starting my takeaway.
Thanks. It is crucial. People are all locked up and buckled. How is that ever going to work? For sure give this a try. Simple thought. Once you latch onto it you get a crystal clear feeling of it not twisting. You'll see.
This sort of thought, I've found, for me, also throws me into maximum ulnar deviation, which seems to also cause my left wrist to flatten - which I otherwise seem incapable of pulling off. 🙂 I also think of "slinging it from the shoulder", which I stole from learning to hit a powerful slice backhand in tennis. With both, the "face", with a decent grip, magically squares itself up. A most "freeing" feel.
Oh, and my "track" is that of a roller coaster making an arcing left turn at a "bottom". Mine resists that left turn back up the hill, but I'm gaining on it with the aid of our Mevo + "club data" feedback. 🙂 Currently doing a lot of pondering over how to both "hammer throw" that club-head, yet keep the left elbow in the vicinity of my belly button. . .
Whatever works. I would say just stop hitting or helping the shot in any way with the arms. If so you have to use your body (hammer throw). They are not throwing the hammer. It is throw with the body. Let it go!
I think that’s been my issue for a long time. Swinging too hard, but also not outstretching my arms and thus not closing the face. Lots of chicken wings. I’ve always concentrated almost solely on swing plane, but I was still leaving the face open. Wrists locked tight.
I have new things to work on 👍. As soon as it’s not 28* outside.
Thanks.
Start today indoors. Have you not heard me say this. The ball is the problem. You want to hit which contracts your arms. Need to get used to new feelings. If you keep hitting when do you ever fix it? Never. Watch and do this indoors everyday at home: czcams.com/video/LAejvDbw_aA/video.html

No. I like it around parallel with driver. Watch this:

If on the downswing there is a stretching or lengthening of the arms....does that mean when you address the ball...you address it more on the toe of the club?....since its going to stretch out on the downswing?....i see zach johnson do this.
Up to you. This is what I do because I was a George Knudson follower many years ago. I just don't like to feel crowded.
Thoughts on iron angles with this effortless swing? Best to be at least neutral for most players? I'm 6'2 in golf shoes and slightly shorter arms than average
Depends on the person's size. At 6'2" I would think you would using clubs 1" long and 2 degrees upright but a professional fitter would be able to get you in the right stuff given your setup was perfect. Keep in mind I don't want people all bent over at setup. Athletic, short stop position. I don't want people to clearly see their toes at set up. Peripheral is fine but if you clearly see them you are bend over too much.
@@paulwilsongolf thanks. Ye ive tried the 1" over thing but its too hard to get clubheads lighter to get correct swing weight for generic market shafts built for D2-D4. More problems than just leaving standard length i think.
Well you can counterbalance them. Put weight in the end to offset the head weight. This will make them swing to the correct weight. A fitter can do this for you.
@@paulwilsongolf unfortunately that doesnt change how the shaft reacts.
I actually just realised my original post meant to say 'lie' angles.
It seems like your timing is perfect, meaning your wrist are very active, which is my problem flipping too far from inside, I'm assuming you hit draws more than fades, and snap hook when you miss? Need drills to stop flipping and being more ball then divot through compress ball versus picking it thin or fat and flipping wrist immediately after.. Thanks
I hit the ball straight or falling right. I do not have to have perfect timing because I am not hitting or helping the shot with my arms. My wrists are a hinge. They hinge ... they rehinge. To do this consistently you need to allow them to hinge and rehinge. Does a hinge not do this 100% of the time? I sure does. So if your wrists are loose and do nothing the weight of the club set in motion will release the club because it wants to always swing to its widest point. Simple physics. Watch:

Fat Shots:
czcams.com/video/UwynwFBldv4/video.html
To stop flipping you need more body rotation. Flipping is you hitting with arms. Turn them off and fire the lower. Find a downswing trigger and use it to hit your shots. This is the easy one:

@@paulwilsongolf thanks so much for the insight, how do you feel about Moe Norman and the single plane philosophy? Been trying to incorporate it somewhat into my swing trying to keep club more square throughout impact , almost like a punch shot to keep wrists from being overactive.. Thanks
I grew up 10 mins. from Moe. Met him many times and even tried it myself many years ago. I have taught one planers for years. It is compatible with what I teach. I'm more of a Vardon grip, narrower stance and more hip turn guy. So if you wan to do it keep doing it. Those who have come to me complain of back pain and no distance. So add my stuff and you get those too.
Best tips on the Tube!
Quick question, Paul, since I started this year I bought starter clubs but turns out they’re 2.5” too short for me (using WTF measurements) do you have any advice to make them longer or a strategy for finding a pair that I can shorten or something like that?
Just trying to make sure the wife doesn’t get me in my sleep for paying $350 for some Nike Vapor Pros. 😂
So glad you like the tips. Thanks. Yes, you need to get rid of those clubs. Might want to get professionally fitted. I am 5'10 and use men's standard length and lie. This is not to say everyone my height should use men's standard but if you don't want to get fitted then think about what I am using then adjust to your height. Let's say you are 6'2" I would probably be using clubs a little longer maybe 1" and bend more upright. The longer you make the club the heavier they will be. If you are shorter don't go too short on the length of the clubs. Instead, you would use clubs bent flatter to accommodate the shorter height. Again, a professional fitter would determine this. For a cheaper option you can get butt extensions on ebay but if they are 2.5" too short then that may not be the best option. You can get shafts only either new or have been pulled from another set. For a few hundred you can get a top of the line set that are a few years old off ebay too. Try to figure out what option works for you but stop using those clubs if they are that short.
@@paulwilsongolf That all makes a ton of sense and I really appreciate you taking the time to reply, it's super rare to actually get engagement back from a content creator let alone a coach that has been doing it as long as you have! I've fixed my swing with your tips and my driver and woods feel great because I measured and they're the right length, my irons are just super short (I bought them used without any knowledge of golf) and I never felt a good smooth swing with them, and now I know why. I'm definitely going to stop using my irons until I can get a better fitted pair.
My father-in-law gave me his old pitching wedge because I didn't have one and it's a 36" shaft and I choked up a bunch because I thought that was the answer, but once I measured I had the idea to move my hands all the way to the end of it, then a light came on and I felt my regular smooth swing but with an iron this time. I can't wait to get back out there with some more fitted equipment, thanks Paul!
Just trying to help everyone. Can't please them all. Still get trolls and complainers. Glad you're with me. As more of a beginner you have a huge advantage because you can start learning this stuff right right out of the gate. Wish I could go back.
As for your clubs keep practicing with the woods. Irons you could use to do practice swings at home. Just hold it off the ground a few inches. Will club head speed go down when you kill the arms ?
Why would that happen. Can a 10-12 year old hit it by you? They aren't strong are they? If they can hit it by you they are doing it a different way than you. You need to learn this way. This is what all my tips are about. czcams.com/video/0gOuKQpUl54/video.html
Paul, just stretch out the lead arm? Not both arms?
Yes, because both arms don't fully stretch out until about 3 feet after impact with driver and 2 feet with irons. Watch:
czcams.com/video/MTLQWJLRAU0/video.html
czcams.com/video/jEWe9Gaoqxo/video.html
Yes. Feeling the weight of the club automatically makes you do several things well. A good way to get this feel is to grab your 3 longest irons, and swing them back n forth, full swings. All of that extra weight will make you naturally apply the brakes with your right leg, on the backswing, and then naturally apply the brakes with your left leg through impact. You’ll literally HAVE to do this to maintain perfect balance. You’ll also notice that your hips, and shoulders will have to turn properly because of the extra weight, and momentum. The final thing this does is keep you perfectly on plane. It’s impossible to swing all of that weight from a full backswing to a full finish, and then back to a full backswing without being on plane. Now, just grab 1 club, and repeat that effortless swing. You’re gonna love the results.
I'm not big on swinging too much weight. This causes your clubs to feel light which is the opposite to what they should feel. You clubs should feel heavy if you are not using your arms. Watch:
Golf starts at 4:30:
czcams.com/video/0_vR8U_KrhY/video.html
So you need to be careful with how much you swing weighted clubs.
@@paulwilsongolf Thanks for the reply. I definitely understand exactly what you’re getting at. I guess I just love the feeling of “tempo”, and natural movement that it gives me, swinging the weight. However, the key is to repeat it with one light club. I’m scratch by the way. Just shot -5(67) Tuesday. And +2(73) Saturday, at a course I had never played before. I love your content. I like how you teach people to swing the club naturally, without manipulating it. I just got back from the range. I love to experiment with different things. But, I will say that I score better swinging naturally, with “lazy” arms. I don’t hit it as far, but strike and direction is much better, which is how you score at golf. Great stuff.
Those are all great feelings for sure and you are doing exactly what I teach. The problem for the average person (who is probably 90% of who is watching these tips) is that they are hitting hard with the arms and they all feel their clubs as being light. So to get them to loosen up and feel the weight of it is key. I love the "lazy" arms description. That is great. Keep on doing what you are doing. Hopefully I get get everyone doing it too.
@@paulwilsongolf Wow. I just watched that video about losing the weight. Very, very interesting. Thanks for that.
I agree with your body swing, but does this ever happen to you? This happens very fast since the downswing is so fast but once in awhile it feels like my arms are too far behind and I panic and my hands go after the ball trying to save the shot but ruining the shot in most cases. What could be happening here?
You are firing the lower too hard. Keep in mind there is timing between the release and the body. If you only speed up one the other will be late. Here is how to fix it:
czcams.com/video/bLskGy7rulo/video.html
@@paulwilsongolf Thanks that push fade shot looks familiar. I thought turning my lower body automatically creates the release. I feel that releasing early is using my hands which is a big no no. I'll give it a try on the range and see if I can recreate what you are saying.
You've got this. 5 mins and it will be dead straight and perfect.
Thanks Paul..it's all starting to come together using your method. I still struggle with firing the hips a little fast and keeping the arms dead..
That great. I did send you my timing tip right? czcams.com/video/bLskGy7rulo/video.html
Turning my arms off i feel like im getting speed by rhythmically pushing against the ground with feet and legs to drive the speed of the club.
Very good. You are thinking of the right things now. You've got this.
I've tried all your videos I'm still hitting pulls please help
You are shifting from the top which is leaning you left as you come down. Lean left = swing left. So ... lean right. Do this drill:
czcams.com/video/GF7JQHr2hhw/video.html
So you can draw a line from where you hit the ball and it doesn’t move left or right 1%. Nobody can do that.
Correct. No problem.
Just looked at a video I shot trying this launch monitor the other day. Driver. I hit 3 balls. Path +1.2, +1.3 degrees from the inside. Last -.08 from the outside (caught that on the heel a little). So very straight. The monitor didn't show face angle but the first 2 were dead straight the third off the heel was a slight pull but almost straight. This is from a dead square stance on a mat.
Don’t try and kill it is the hardest thing to do
It sure is. All you need to do is understand it then try something new and get used to the new feelings. Problem is people don't repeat things enough to get it. This takes daily practice swings to get used to the new feeling. Watch this and do it for 1 week:
