  • Do you want to learn how to hit a golf ball like a pro? I bet you do. In order to hit it like a pro, you need to understand the difference between what they're doing and what you're doing. Once you know that, you'll see that if you keep doing what you're doing you'll never hit pro-like shots.
    To understand it, we're going to get in the time machine and go back to the very first ball you ever hit. This is where the problem started. Think about it. When did pros start playing golf? The great majority of golf pros started as little kids where as most amateurs started as adults. This is huge difference.
    If you want to hit a golf ball like a pro you need to understand what they did as they hit their very first golf ball versus what you did. No one is telling you this so if you don't know what you are doing then how can you ever hit a ball like a pro? All you have to do to hit a golf ball like a pro is to copy what they are doing. This tip shows you the drill you should be doing regularly until you start to do it like they do.

    Loved watching golf on TV for 30+ years but never actually played. It wasn't till after my heart transplant in 2018 that I finally got out and started playing.
    Hooked right from the start. Scoured the internet learning techniques from different instructors. Came across
    one of Paul's video, and his common sense approach and demonstration definitely helped in establishing a base for starters like me. He comes across as a stearn golf dad teaching one of his children, but my take away from his lessons has really helped me progress in a way I can go out and shoot a round, have fun, and play respectable golf. Thanks for helping this transplant warrior enjoy this wonderful game.

They are making up terms and catch phrases to sound important. I do the Nicklaus test. Did he talk about the vertical force in this swing? No. Did Hogan? No. Nelson? No. Etc. I no way do I want to put it in these terms for people. It is totally unnecessary. Keep it simple.

This has been an excellent way for me to start rotating effortless and almost automatically. I think that these exercises are better than spending hours at the driving range . Hello Paul. First of all, thank you very much for your video and drill instructions. I really appreciate it. It is changing me.
    I started golf a year ago when I turned 30. My goal was shooting below 72 on average. So I practiced. Well my best shots did go over 280 yards but I was shooting left and right. First 6 months I had huge slices. Next 6 months I had big hooks. Though I had some good days and good shots, as you have mentioned they were just luck and good conditions. I never felt comfortable. I was always worried that my ball would suddenly go flying. I knew I had some problems with my rotation, because my hand would just snatch the club. When I saw your video about you telling us the day you learned how to turn your arms off, I was shocked. Because that was what I was looking for. I'm on day 1 on your drill but this feels awesome. I am using my strength but not on my arms or hands. Well I do hold on to it so it wouldn't just go flying off my hands but I guess that's all I'm really using. No huge weight shifts or fierce body turns. In fact, I'm not sure what force I'm really using. I'm just kinda turning left and right but the club is pretty fast. If I add more power by sitting down a little, the club adds so much speed. I'll come back after a month and tell you how it went. Again thank you for this wonderful video.

      So glad you found me. Keep this stuff simple and in no time you will get to your goal. you are young enough and have hit shots with decent power so it is doable. Just need to see it differently. Work on hinging and rehinging first. Get the wrists super loose and eliminate all slice spin. See this as "half right." Your wrists are working. Once you can do that you switch to body rotation to straighten it out. This is the other half "direction." Just need to see it different. Everyone is trying to hit perfect shots so they get nothing. Why not get half then get the other half. Watch me do it:

    Mr Wilson, superb video as always with a constant message throughout your content that is easy to understand and extremely helpful to golfers of all level. I just thought I’d ask how you think Scheffler is able to pure every shot when it looks like he’s about to fall over after some shots? It’s amazing how his follow through is completely different when sometimes he finishes with his hands below his chest and sometimes he steps through the shot. Thank you as always Mr Wilson and all the best!

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  Před 10 měsíci +1

      Glad you liked it. Thanks. As far a Scheffler is concerned I am not big on the falling over for sure. He is doing that after he hits it, the weight fully on his left foot as he hits it, he's a tour pro, plus his face is open and he fades it so there is more room for error so he gets away with it . I teach a precise ending point (always have) so the person's swing doesn't fall apart. The average person has hit no where near the amount of ball vs. a tour pro plus they maybe practice once a week. Maybe he doesn't care or want to hit a precise ending point. As you see recently his driver is giving him issues. He certainly is awesome and if he could putt better he would be absolutely dominating. I do prefer his more old school upright taller swing versus this new bent over swing they seem to be teaching. So for the average player I would be working on a precise ending point so they can repeat the movement. For Scheffler I would like to see this too but I don't think it's going to happen.

    I started at age three and he is absolutely right. I used my dad’s clubs and did not have the muscle strength to follow through so I had to use bigger muscles. My body. Hips and legs. Then my dad made me my own clubs because at the time in the early 90’s there weren’t any club sets for toddlers until Taylormade junior bubble burner sets were a thing.
    I developed a bad habit however of trying to scoop the ball up instead of hitting it forward and down with the irons.

      I will keep saying it over and over until people get it. There has to be a reason a 12 year old (even younger) can hit it by bigger stronger people. The reason is they have no arm strength. If you cannot hit you need to use your body. Your scooping got you hitting again. Just turn the arms back off and you will be back to hitting it great instantly.

      It's actually not. I don't like weight clubs because they are not heavy enough. Swing one of them and your clubs feel light. This is the opposite of how they should feel. Swing a light club and your clubs feel heavy. This is the correct feeling. Flip your club upside down and do some swings. Then flip it the right way and you will get the correct feeling.

Started playing again this year, maybe 12 rounds total up to this point. Got new irons/woods, all Ping gear, it's fitted to my specs. Up until finding Paul's ridiculously simple, yet highly effective swing approach vids, I was all over the map with the swing, 17.5 handicap. His simple step out in the yard and just swing the club back and forth and work on the weight transfer and feel the weight of whatever club you selected as you swing free and easy has transformed my contact into effortless high draws or straight shots with every club in the bag. It's to the point where others nearby at the range are stopping and watching as I smooth through shots and they just blast off, and land right near the designated distance markers again and again. Sometime I get so jacked I start swinging quicker, and sure enough I'm over the top or hands are coming through too early, or late and the results of the contact show it. I'm talking these results have come about in one week's time, so hang in there and focus. It works. I must add that Paul's vid on the neutral grip is the cornerstone for everything else he talks about. The grip is awesome for feel and control.

      Wow you are doing great. So glad you found me. I have taught countless people who took a break from golf but were better players. To get to a 6 hdcp you would have had to have used your body. The break got you hitting due to human nature. I did a tip on it here:
      czcams.com/video/fuOJxv_22Hk/video.html
      So this ex-better player used their body before it's just getting them back to using it. In your case you follow my instruction and really focused on a few simple drills/moves to loosen you up. The grip is vital too as this allows you to have loose wrists and not snap hook it. That tip is here: czcams.com/video/jQZLp8bF-Ww/video.html
      So exciting when you start hitting the ball well. In your case, getting it back is super exciting. Stay focused and please try to never take a break into the future. Just at least do some practice swings to keep remembering the feeling. Human nature is a powerful force that must be overcome. All the best.

    Paul I bought your course and is fantastic, lot of drills and lot of insight. I discovered practicing this days that I tighten my arms after the impact...may be the fear to lose the club, or may be im worried to hit the balls straight , how can I get rid of that and let my arms lose also after I impact the ball ? [may be at the impact I already tighten my arms and my grip on the club]

      Thank you for your support. I truly appreciate it. You need to be thinking of my follow through positions. If you are tightening you are thinking about and trying to hit the ball. So have the follow through in mind before you start back. Hit the top and immediately make the move to the follow through. That is point B to your swing. So you go from point A to point B. Right now you are making the ball point B. This is never going to work. So reduce the balls you are hitting for while and focus on the practice swings doing the follow through exactly as I show.

      Yes, the answers are here. No need to look elsewhere. Stay focused. You have obviously been a great player before. The problem is when people take a break from golf (not sure if you ever did). When they do they will always come back to it and start hitting with the arms. This is due to human nature telling you to hit the ball sitting in front of you. So taking the arms out is critical. No hitting means you have to find another power source which is your hips. Keep the arms turned off. Make it simple. Watch your ball and it will tell you what you need to do. The ball is the teacher. Hi Paul, I notice you stress not swinging with your arms and "turning them off" during the backswing and then the downswing. My question is (as a right hander), if you turn your left arm off during the back swing, how do you achieve a straighter left arm? Is that even important?

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  Před 2 měsíci

      I would never tell anyone to purposely keep their left arm straight. This is wrecking countless swings. The person forces the arm straight with tightens the muscles and locks the wrists. Yes, there are tour players that keep the arm straight. It's probably 50/50 straight vs. slightly bent. The thing is they learned as kids. It's way easier to keep it straight when you first start player and are a young kid. Now kids fire the lower body great versus adults. The adult forces it straight. They tight plus they don't really use the body at all so they just end up whacking away at it. Just fixed a guy last week. He was 6'2" forcing it straight hitting it nowhere. After I was done with him getting him to keep it extended not locked he was flying it easy 280. His swing was pretty good but forcing the arm straight (which he thought he has to do) was giving him no power. It was night and day once I loosened him up. I did a tip on this here:
      czcams.com/video/1TiT0C8XF2U/video.html
      I stress not being too tight going back. Setting the top of the backswing until you train it to hit the top. Then on the way down in no way are you trying to hit or help the shot with your arms. So keep the lead arm extended but not locked.

      @paulwilsongolf  Před 10 měsíci

      Exactly what I am talking about. The break you took is a huge problem though. You need to follow this:
      I have fixed countless people who took a break from golf get their swing back. It's easy because they have used their body in the past. Take the break and you start hitting with the arms (which will never work). I just need to get them to loosen the wrists and use their body again to power the swing.
      Watch this first to understand why taking a break lost your swing:
      czcams.com/video/fuOJxv_22Hk/video.html
      Work on this first:
      czcams.com/video/M868QsTlGt4/video.html
      czcams.com/video/p4vASmOzkPg/video.html
      czcams.com/video/N-nGM6yN790/video.html
      czcams.com/video/yHEv7G9Z5-0/video.html
      Get the ball hooking and loose the wrists. Once you can do that you then start firing the lower body harder/quicker/faster to straighten it out. Not sure what your downswing trigger is but something in your legs and hips you use to hit the ball.
      This is the easiest trigger:
      czcams.com/video/RdphthCQ9VM/video.html
      As you do this there is timing between the release and the legs and hips so you need to watch this to learn exactly how hard you need to fire your hips:
      czcams.com/video/bLskGy7rulo/video.html
      This is literally days or a week or two of work maximum to get it back.
      Keep me posted.

      Great to hear from you. It is easy to fall into bad habits. This is due to greed and not playing/practicing daily (which would allow human nature to take over). Need to do daily practice swings. Anytime you start hitting thin, topped, or sliced shots your arms are creeping back in. You immediately slow down to 50%. Do practice swings at kneed high and feel the body powering the swing. Try to keep this in mind for the future. czcams.com/video/glKnfVbhuXo/video.html

    Great lesson. However, I had a swing coach once who gave me the similar principle of body turning, rotation of torso, and the arms simply go along for the ride. Decent advice. But I took it to an extreme and my arms and hands became too passive if you can imagine that. I think it is good to remind the student that the swing starts from the ground up using a summation of nicely-timed, sequential forces (feet, legs, hips, torso, shoulders, arms, hands) that when all is put together well, generates a lot of beautiful, seemingly-effortless power. My point is, the arms and hands do contribute power and direction to the golf swing; they just aren't the beginning of the generation of power. That's my take. Thanks for the video.

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  Před 10 měsíci +1

      Well arms being too passive was not the case. It was you firing your lower way too hard. There is timing between your release and body rotation. If you only speed one of these up of course you will not hit great shots. In your case it would be pushes. This is so easy to fix. I talk about it in this tip:

      That being said, there's room for some subjectivity of "feels" here. What some people may "feel" like they are "actively using" their arms when they're just feeling their arms move as a result of the body turn. It's a perception thing. I don't think anyone would advocate for tensing up your arm muscles quite a lot and trying to "hit" it really hard, for example.

    I totally agree to nearly everything you say but there is one thing that allways confuses me when the role of the hips and their use in an golf swing is explained. A golf swing can only be powered by contracting muscles and I don't know which muscels contract when hips are mentioned. Hips turn and I would say this is mainly because of the straightening of the left leg and there are definetly contracting muscels involved. This turn of the hips then helps the muscles that turn (and also lift) the shoulders (or upper body) to do their work. As far as arms are concerned I agree that you can literally exchange the arms by poles connected to the shoulders. That said I would like you to give me your view on what you mean when you say hips should be used in a golf swing.

    More praise for these videos. Sorry to comment on all that I watch. However, all distinct although similar. I am still working on my driver, month and a half and counting. Every time I think that I have solved the chicken wing, no such luck when I look at the videos that I record. The most bizarre aspect of working on the swing, as I mention always, is a "perfect" practice swing, easy, no arms, etc. that I do not think about at all. Then 2 seconds later, addressing the ball, then swinging - chicken wing.
    I did not record myself yesterday when I hit about 1/3 of a bucket of balls. However, almost every swing at the ball caused the ball to take a perfect arc in front of me. I still cannot tell how far the practice range balls go, but my best estimate is somewhere between 220 and 250 yards. I know that at the moment I cannot hit the ball to 265-270 yards, which is the end of the practice range. Not only a perfect arc, but the clicking sound made by the club hitting the ball and no feeling when hitting the ball.
    I consciously tried to make sure that I was throwing my arms forward on the downswing without and arm usage. I will record myself today, then see how I do. I re-iterate to Mr. Wilson that I will pay him $97 in any case if I have a non-chicken wing swing hitting the ball! FYI, the Google picture is me at about 26 years old. I am now 71, so I need to alert Mr. Wilson of that. Still spry and flexible however!

      Glad you like them. As I said before the chicken wing is you hitting the ball with arms. YOU are contracting YOUR arms muscles. This is a fact. So YOU need to stop doing that. I think I said before do this drill for 30 days and the chicken wing will be gone then you will be sending my $97.

    7:11 - Yup, the reason the kid never chicken wings is because he doesn't have the arm strength to overcome the weight of the clubhead in the downswing. So what happens? The club literally releases itself and fully extends past the ball. For me as an adult, the two things that helped me trememdously was watching your swing; I noticed your upper lead arm was pinned to your chest and you maintained a bent elbow and wrist in the trail arm, in the entire downswing. When I say maintained, I mean they stayed that way almost all the way to impact, the ONLY reason they changed was because the clubhead eventually pulled the arms away from the body and, at that point the club literally releases itself PAST the ball. I'm going to do a short video today and I'll post it so everyone can see what I'm talking about. I'll reference your teaching in it. I think you'll like it.

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  Před 10 měsíci

      Exactly. Then I get well why don't adults swing weighted clubs. That would be great but the weight of the club for an adult needs to be as heavy as what the kid would feel. So what is that? 25 lbs? No idea. Thanks for the mention. Send me the link when done.

    Dont believe it this what ive been saying for years ! golfers that learn as adults just want to avoid the embarrassment of missing toppin etc and develop a chopping action, then later try to just hit it straight,Kids dont care they just make a swish and if they miss just make another!
    A golf club must weigh like a sledgehammer to them! men are strong enough to just use their arms
    Most of the men in my club below my 6 hcp learnt as weak kids as did 99% of pros so when im practicing i try to swing like a weak kid
    Hardly any golfers get this or my other theory that every good golfer in the world that ever lived could bounce a ball on a wedge,! i learnt to thats a major reason why im 6 hcp having started golf at 50yo
    nobody i tell that to ever puts the effort in to learn just want quick fixes tips etc

    • @paulwilsongolf

      Now that would be heavy enough. You could just do the drill in the tip though. You could also flip your club upside down and do bunch of swings. Then flip it the right way. If so, your clubs will feel heavy which is the correct feeling.

    • @matthewhamilton6098
      @matthewhamilton6098 Před 10 měsíci

      @paulwilsongolf thanks. I can get to 110 mph, but I'm swinging out of my shoes to do it, and it doesn't hurt, but I'm definitely sore the next day. Do you feel your core stay loose or tight as you turn?

    Maybe we adults just need heavier clubs. 😆

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  Před 8 měsíci

      That doesn't work because they get too heavy for people to swing. You need to flip your club upside down and swing it. Then yours feel heavy.
