- Automotive Engineer David Chao predicts that the 2023 will be the last year for the V-8 powered Lexus GX 460, which is still going strong after so many years. Convinced that 2023 Lexus GX is the best iteration ever, David decided to buy the 2023 version before the new model comes out as the 2024 - since the new version will likely drop the beautiful V-8 engine. David walks through the entire Lexus GX Blackline edition in detail, and explains why he decided to buy this before it's too late.

I have a 2004 Lexus GX470. 500k mileage. For the 2UZ engine, this is a child's age. I'm never going to change my car. GX is the last real SUV from Toyota.
Hi David,
Hi 100% agree about the Lexus GX 460… This is one of my favorite videos that you have done… I like the Eminent white pearl the same as the LX 570 and with the GX I like all black semi aniline leather the luxury build With the off-road package I already have five of the F sport rims brand new in the box when I purchased my GX 460 in 2018 so I have some accessories from the truck which I’m going to transfer it to my new one in 2023. I truly think that the LX and the GX will last a lifetime especially if you’re a senior like myself in my 60s the number one reason why I love these vehicles is because they are built in the Tahara factory in Japan and in my opinion, they have the best quality fit and finish, reliability and dependability of any vehicle made in the world. That’s what I believe in listening to you, and that enforces my decision making…David I don’t think anybody can find a genius and a friend as loyal and honest as you… I think you’re the exact mirrored image of the Lexus brand being reliable and dependable true and honest to the people; I think the brand and you go, hand-in-hand simply put, perfect… I can’t thank you enough for all the work that you do… when I sit down tomorrow for Thanksgiving dinner with my German shepherds, I thank God that I have you as one of my best friends; I am truly honored and thankful for that… Happy Thanksgiving, David to you and your family. I wish you the best that life has to offer just like you have done for all your subscribers in the past, present and future; peace be with you always..

Yep- it's my forever car too! Nice and big and powerful. I do not drive great distances, so I can afford the premium gas, which this vehicle consumes like a thirsty sports fan! I still love it though!
This is great news, David! I'm interested in learning more about the GX. I'm looking forward to seeing your videos on it.
they are very excellent off-road vehicles
Thanks David! I love the GX and just brought a 2023 GX in nori green couple weeks ago for my wife. We were lucky and my local dealer just got one nori green in the lot the same day we visited the dealership.
Morning David congratulations on the new 460. My 23 GX in Nuri Green is being PPF ceramic coated. I am looking forward to driving it. It has 8 miles presently. Special thanks to you and car care nuts for all the information that helped me decide on the GX. I will send pic soon.
It’s a beautiful car David, really interesting and pretty vehicle. Thanks for sharing this video.👍
I bought a 22 gx460 and love it. Been following David’s reviews and he helped push me in that direction. It’s a Japanese Range Rover-absent the RR reliability issues of course…
And it has 3 rows standard before RR came out with a 3 row version
Thanks to your videos, I purchased a ‘23 Black Line in Nori Green Pearl and I LOVE IT!!!!! I sold my ‘12 4Runner and ‘19 Audi S5 for this and I can’t stop smiling!!
Congratulation! love my 23 nori green gx. I'll keep it for as long as i can. More videos on gx when you get it!
Thank you for sharing. I also decided to buy a 23 Blackline edition. Very good vehicle.
Great choice! Would love to see more videos on the GX
😉
Just bought a 23 Lux package myself. Atomic Silver/Sepia… the smoothness and ride on this thing is unbelievable. Will never sell her.
Agreed. One test ride and I was hooked. I immediately forgot about getting a 2023 4Runner after the GX ride- so smooth and comfortable.
I picked up a 23 GX a few weeks ago. Great vehicle. This is my 4th GX.
Fantastic. I just picked up a Nori green 2023 Black Line Edition. I love it so much and picked it up because I fear this is the last GX with the V8. Simple, beautiful, great quality and should last me forever. Good luck with yours.
Other changes for 2023 vs 2022 is that the spoiler is now also black and they added 360 view cameras. Good video, got Nori allocation coming in a month.
Just bought one for my Birthday gift and I love IT...
I have the 1st Gen 470 and absolutely love mine along with 4th Gen 4Runner 4x2. Will definitely add a 460 into my collection next bullet proof trucks indeed.
I've had my Nori 2023 GX for about 3 weeks now. Love it. Get the roof rack bars. They are new design and beautiful how they fit. They do add some wind noise. Not too much.
Awesome video!
Congratulations! What a treasure of a vehicle to own.
Good choice David! I purchased the 22 GX luxury a year ago. Absolutely love the car. Traded my 19 4Runner trd pro. Gas mileage has been better than expected but drive conservatively. Good knowing you have the top most dependable vehicle made.
How does the drive compare to the 4runner TRD pro in your opinion??
The 4Runner drove great because of the Fox shocks but the GX in my opinion a step up in comfort. The GX has a nicer ride with V8 power and all time 4WD. The leather seats are very comfortable and the cabin is very quiet. I can tell the GX is better insulated. It is a well built quality vehicle. Loved the 4Runner but glad I made the trade.
@@robertbritt5730 thank you for your response Robert 🙏 👏
I wanted to try a Lexus for there famed reliability have had many different brands, so I started out with a 21 GX 460 premium with sport, so these are my observations after driving it for a few months total gas pig for some odd reason and I’m gonna say it’s the rack and pinion this car cannot stay straight on the road you have to Saw the wheel to try to keep it it’s lane . Very old technology. V8 is slow as hell and if you’re a family, this vehicle is way too small for the price. I would never recommend this vehicle to any of my friends.
@@shawnhuntermark3995 What's crazy is used 4Runners are selling for the same price as a used GX with similar mileage. I wanted a 4Runner but now I'm thinking I might as well get a GX for similar amount of money.
The 3rd row is tight but it's not the end of the world. This really is an excellent vehicle.
@AutomotivePress: I am waiting for my Black Line Special Edition in Nori Green that I have reserved. Thanks to you and AMD, I am going to spring for it. Best of luck!
I have a white black line, great vehicle, glad I purchased over the 4runner. I’m thinking of upgrading my tires too over the all seasons. Would you recommend an AT, I live in the northeast and we get a good amount of snow.
I LOVE my 2020 TRD Off Road w/ KDDS, but I drove a 23 GX recently and WOW it’s so nice!!! The only thing holding me back is losing the rear sliding power window. And that Nori Green color is outstanding!
Cracks me up how 4Runner people are about that rear window. It's been elevated to make or break status, when it's not on most cars and seems like a really silly reason to drive something or not to the rest of us.
Congratulations David! I ordered a GX, and ultimately purchased a certified LX for all the reasons you outline on GX except LX not built in Tahara factory.
Now if I can only get the Mrs. to drive a 2023 GX…🤔
Congratulations!
Very good choice nice vehicle:)!!! My 2019 GX Premium is a keeper for the next couple years till Lexus presents the newer model...no complaints at all, here!
Great choice David... I love the GX
I've had my new GX for a month or so. It is my favorite vehicle I've ever owned I think. I'm planning on having it for quite some time in order to build it into an overlanding machine. Keeping it stock for now, but really loving my purchase.
Hello, I just purchased a 2023 GX and would like your thoughts on the ventilated seats. The ones in my GX are barely detectable even at the highest setting, basically worthless. Thank you!
thank you David
David thanks for your videos they are very informative.
Thanks to your knowledge I pulled the trigger and bought a 2022 GX with 4200 miles . Lexus Certified.
I will be one of the last dinosaurs to own a V8 Lexus and proud of it.
Would you be able to put the question to bed of " Premium or regular gas for the GX.
As and Engineer myself I understand quality and value .
Awesome video David! Someone show that everyman driver this video so he can learn a thing or two about great vehicles.
Dave Erickensen's lost his shit a long, long time ago.. too bad... he just got too cocky
I had just purchased an LX570 before the death of the V8 was announced. Timing is everything!
Very nice video 👍
Not a practical vehicle for my needs but I too am a fan of this box. And I love the nori green.
I just bought one had it for 2 Weeks 2023 will be the last of the best GX460. I highly recommend buy it before it’s gone. 2024 will not be the same.
I completely agree, the GX is a beautiful dinosaur. I would cycle out the 4Runner when your allocation arrives. No point having two different flavours of the same platform if it means giving up your pick-up bed.
I am so excited for the new generation 2024 Prado as well. Don't know when the official reveal will be
I really want one of these too!
Had an 2004 gx470, best car I’ve ever owned, or so I thought. My 21 gx460 might be the best, I don’t think I’ll have a new car for the next 15 years hopefully 🤞
I did same and bought the ‘23 4Runner 40th year anniversary
Love my GX460 Premium 2023. A standout is the 6-speed transmission vs an 8 speed. The 8 speed transmissions always seem to be finding another gear where the 6 speed doesn't do that.
Indeed, more gears isn't always a better driving experience, especially when you have plenty of low-end v8 torque to accelerate without having to downshift.
Ordered another one this summer. Best vehicle all around. A bit steep on the gas bills, but you an do order of magnitude worse paying the German makers for "module replacements."
That’s a beautiful vehicle!
I also bough a GX 2022 Pearl White because of your prediction. I wanted the V-8.
@AutomotivePress: Don’t forget about the black spoiler and shark fin new for the 2023 MY Black Line
I
Am happy for you David. Very wise purchase in my opinion. I love my TRD Pro 4Runner but if I had the means for another, the GX would be it. Thanks again for your fabulous videos. Interesting that the new GX will come out before the new 4Runner. Toyota must hate American 4X4 fans🙄. They certainly don’t listen to what off roaders want like Jeep and Ford does.
totally agree with you about how they don't trust understand the US 4x4 market...
@AutomotivePress
David, I agree that the 4.6liter V8 is a great engine. I have that on my 2013 Tundra. That green is a great color. Sorry you couldn't get it, but the white is nice, too. I like the lighter grey seats. Contrasting interior colors look nicer, in my opinion, than a sea of a single color. And nice they stay away from all black. All black interiors have kept me out of some vehicles that I wanted but just don't like nothing but black, black and more black on black in interiors.
And nice job keeping the show's "fingerprint wipers" in business. More show car poking, tapping, wiping, smudging and touching even than Andre on TFL, which is a hard thing to do! Ha. (have to rib you for that).
And so it was the last year. I also got a 2023 GX460. I think it will be a very sought after model since it’s the last V8 without hybrid and turbo/supercharger complications.
hi David ... What ELSE besides ( Colors)
is different ( or extra) about BlackLine trim !??
Hi David, do you believe 2023 will be the last year for the current gen 4Runner as well?
David, Congratulations on the latest addition to your fleet. 👏👏I have so many questions but today I will restrict myself to just one. I noticed every trim level of Prado has a hand parking brake but the GX has a pedal, do you know why? 🤔
that's a great question... perhaps it has something to do with the available refrigerator box???
@@LexusGX460-OFF-ROAD Even the top spec Prado Kakadu sold in Australia has a hand brake and cool box so that can't be the reason.
@@rightlanehog3151 good point... what's your guess????
@@LexusGX460-OFF-ROAD I will wait for David.
Could you ask your contacts why I still can't buy a Class IV hitch for my 2022 GX after over 13 months?!?!
I bought the GX and planned on towing a trailer to help my parents move but I had to scramble to find a Curt Class III hitch to use since the hitch got deleted from my build as it went through the port back in early October of 2021.
I'm getting really frustrated with Lexus as they still advertise the towing capabilities of the GX to this day even though it can't tow anything from the factory since you can't buy a hitch 😡
I'm awaiting my 2023 GX, but I've also been told the hitch is no longer installed at Lexus service centre. I can get it installed at an external garage but just have to be careful not to tamper with any wiring whilst installing it
OBTW- for all GX owners, please get a spare tire 8 inch valve extension installed onto your spare tire, as the factory configuration does not allow one to refill the spare tire stem in the factory configuration (it is too short to do so).
My wife wants one but I told her to wait for redesign for gas mileage. She has a RX now with 140k miles, still drives like brand new!
she is half way to a new one at 300k
The new one has pretty much the same gas mileage. I think it's 1mpg better but you would be stuck with the V6?
Still patiently waiting for that new design gx my 2016 still looking gd still riding gd and only 34k miles on it which still holds pretty gd value
Great video as usual David. Why would they give the Black Line Edition with a black headliner and generally black/dark interior light gray ("boulder gray") seats? People who like the Black Line generally like "black"/dark interiors. Might pull it off in a white GX as seat contrasts as slightly darker against white exterior...but against a dark exterior? After years of waiting for the 2022 upgrades (waited out the gouging) was set to move on a 2023 Black Black Line and then saw the light gray...so disappointing.
I have the 2022 and I agree 100% So glad I got the 2022 Black line edition ( Nori Green) with a dark interior. I think the front camera is nice but I don't see a real huge use for it. i think the only other change, not 100% sure is a 360 degree camera when backing?
David, Great vehicle overview as usual! Lexus even makes green look good! In our November monthly billing statement from Lexus Financial Services, we received a picture of the "all new" GX460 rendering. It's not as nice as your rendering! If you have not seen it, I'd be glad to share the picture with you. Just let me know where to send a copy of it. Best Regards,
Hi DGM. If not too much of trouble could you pls share the the new 2024 GX rendering. I am in the market of GX and couldn’t make up my mind if worth of waiting for the next generation coming. Thank you!

Are there any sites out there showing the exterior of the new Lexus 550?
I still have my 2022 IS500 the last n/a V8 sedan from Japan. My next vehicle is a 2023 4runner TRD Pro.
I end up getting 22 GX over the 4Runner, still waiting on the tow hitch to come in 😢😢
Legendary powertrain with a butter face.
Hate the side swing gate that opens to the right. Ancient. That front end 🥴.
David do have any idea what will be the next GX generatin engine of?
Body on frame question, for someone who lives in the midwest, how durable is the paint/chasis with salt over the years? Ive heard some stories that 4runners and older gxs have rust issues.
I live in Wisconsin and I have a 22 GX460. I had the undercarriage sprayed with fluid film and the car waxed. Should be good to go!
I have had body-on-frame vehicles for the past 30 years - not a problem at all! Remember this was a standard design for all cars up until the 1980s! It's tried and true and makes for a stronger vehicle too.
points: hydraulic ps, engine v8, fit and form, gas fuel using-gasoline most efficient energy source.
Thank you, David. I have 2018 GX 460 Luxury and love it, except for the tech. And now, the Enform is cancelled so we lost remote start, lock, and SOS among other things. Does it make any sense to trade for the 2023 for the upgraded technology package? Thank you very much.
If you like the new technology go for it 😃
@@LexusGX460-OFF-ROAD
I appreciate your response and channel. Is there an option for 2018 GX owners to somehow replace what we lost when 3G Enform subscription services were cancelled 10/31/22? Even Stellantis allowed their vehicles to upgrade the tech from the 3G version…
@@marklerfald Mark I am not sure on this. GXBOB seems like the expert on this sort of thing... perhaps reach out to him??? 😃 ❤️

Do you know anything about their engineering company philosophy on a Land Cruiser vs everything else Toyota? I’ve heard it’s different but there’s nothing concrete I’ve found, other than 25 year parts support from the dealer. And does that apply to everything badged LC or only certain models?
Toyota/Lexus prioritize quality on all models... there's really no such thing as a "cheap" Toyota
Hello Mr. David, I just purchased a 2023 GX 460 about a week ago. I'm very disappointed with the operation of the ventilated seats, it's barely detectable even at the highest setting, it's basically useless. I would like your thoughts on this, and does your GX have the same issue? I've seen on some GX forums that some owners are having the the issue. Thank you and keep up the great work. Paul
Mine too, I thought it would be more pronounced
I just got mine last week, was wondering if the vibration on the steering wheel is normal due to the hydraulic power steering or the road. It also pulls to the right a bit. Guess I'll ask my dealer.
I’ve the same problems with some shaking steering wheel when accelerate from 60-70mph. Took it to dealer they balanced the tires twice and said it normal but not to me. My GX is 2019. What is yours
Yup, I had ( still have some randomly ) this on my 2018. Have a road force balance ( this is different from the usual balancing ) done to address this issue! Also, have your tires checked for flat spots, and if any of the wheels are possibly bent.
Just bought 2023 GX 460 Nightfall Mica. 8)
I'm surprised you think being aligned with a new Defender is a positive David?
Does it have a dark chrome exhaust tip?
David, thank you for your valued opinion. We just picked up our 2023 GX460 premium last week. What a beast. Enjoying the ride. Was planning to buy the new Acura MDX. I'm glad I didn't. No comparison.
Similar shoes, why did you decide to go with GX instead?
not even comparable vehicles
Same here but Acura needs to sort out that 10 spd auto.
David, I am curious - how do you feel about the brakes on GX and 4Runner? Every time I've driven one, I felt the brakes are kind of awful, with a lot of travel where nothing happens, and then a sudden hard bite.
If you come from German car backgrounds, the feel is very non-linear. Especially when you first get your vehicle. You will get used to it, the first 1 1/2 does absolutely F'all lol. The actual brake performance at the limits is in fact excellent for a truck of size. We have a 4Runner and a GX460 in the household (another one on the way), so personal experience say that 1. it takes a bit to break-in, and 2. you may consider going to Akebono pads (I think they are ceramic pads, very reasonable priced - slightly cheaper than OEM, which may also be Akebono's product, but not the same). You may also consider rotor upgrade (actually slightly cheaper than OEM) from the likes of Centriq or Advics (whom are again, OEM providers for Toyota). Don't go out of your way to get these replace since my experience is that you won't get MORE braking performance, but the Akebono pads gives a more linear feel. Just do it during brake jobs. They also seem to last forever.
you'll get used to it... that's all I can say...
I like the feel of the 4runner brakes; similar to that on my 2013 Tundra. I don't like touchy brakes, particularly in the winter when wearing big boots or wearing mud boots. It's all about what you get used to, I suppose. I get in my wife's 2011 Lexus RX350 and about put us through the windshield the first few times I go to lightly tap the brakes. Ha.
Is it true? Did you really buy a Lexus GX460??? ❤️ 😍
Good choices. Just don’t let sell it.
Curious, why not keep your cars longer? Isn't the point of Lexus reliability is to keep a car longer without major problems?
Its been a decade but the chair design didnt change?.... they should at least add 6 inches to the length or 10 inches, so the chairs will be comfortable and 3rd row will be useable
I love the GX 460 but I absolutely loathe the front bumper
Big question, wait for the new GX 550 or buy this 460..? The new engine may take a while to stabilize, but this V8 is trusted and proved.
The new engine is almost surely going to be the detuned version of the twin-turbo v6 found in the new Tundra and Sequoia... but this engine was first used in the Lexus LS 500 in 2017... so at this point, the engine has been in production vehicles for around 7 years, and was no doubt in development for years before that... it would not be a stretch to say that by the time this engine is being put in the new GX, the engine will have been around for 10ish years (including development/testing time).
I’m trying to decide between this and the Toyota 4 runner limited. Which one do you think is the better buy?
The Lexus GX460 is a better choice
The GX460 for sure. Similar mpg but a more powerful engine, better transmission, full time 4wd as well as a quieter and higher quality interior.
@@Odat The 4r Limited has full time 4wd as well, and optioned redwood interior , which is nice! But does lack the GX pwr.
Absolutely smart buy. The V8s are going away forever. Toyota V8s are gems. I now have a 3UZ, a 1UR and a 3UR. If I can find a low mileage 3UZ I will get another. I keep them long time.
wrong. Toyota/Lexus V8s smooth but were never ever ever fuel efficient. I have had two Landcruisers and the mileage was simply unacceptable killing the range of the vehicle. They didn't even put in a big gas tank for range. Totally unacceptable
When you buy a $70K vehicle you do not care gas mileage. One can add a secondary gas tank fairly easily if necessary.
@@02hreblue30 I'd rather pay the fuel costs of a reliable V8 engine than take my chances with an unproven complicated twin-turbo V6.
GX BOB..THE GX 460 PERTAINS TO THE 4.6L ENGINE..HOW DOES THE GX550 RELATE TO THE ENGINGE?..
Only negative is the mpg
I did exactly the same💪🏼
??are you serious. how is that?
I really wanted to get a GX460 a few years back to replace my 2012 GL550. I had hyped it up in my mind and went and drove one. I was hoping for a more rugged luxury SUV for towing the boat. I came away thinking it lacked luxury, power, and refinement. I am still driving my GL500 with 160k on it with only minor maintenance. I am hoping Toyota comes out with something soon as I really would like to update my SUV, but don't want to feel like I am stepping backwards.
Don't like the front end, keeping my GLK350, thanks!
This is a vehicle for smart buyers. Good value, reliable, genuinely competent. But let’s not oversell the V8…it’s very underpowered.
2024
I love dinosaurs!
This GX definitely is enough for your boat if the Tacoma could tow it as well. The difference being it's got a way better engine, transmission, everything really besides wheelbase.
The Lexus GX is the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado and not the 4Runner.
How many cars do you have?!? Please sell me one for trade in value
Blackline edition needs black seats
If you buy/switch cars every two years why bother with Toyota/Lexus? You should go for Range Rovers etc. that are fun but super unreliable.
Toyota/Lexus build their cars for people who will drive them for long time.
Lease European buy Lexus….
