Is the new Lexus GX550 better than the GX460?

- In this video, I compare the new 2024 Lexus GX550 Luxury+ to the older 2023 Lexus GX460 of the previous generation. The new model gets a bump in technology, power, upgraded towing capacity, and more.

I'm all in for the GX 460. Practical and none assuming and gorgeous. The 460 is a V8 engine tested over the years and is not made for people looking for n0 fluff. This is a doer and not a shower although it does excellent as a shower. GX 460, what a beauty especially with the sport package!!
Love that incoming GX 550 because it let me buy my certified '22 GX 460 for a huge dealer discount!
If you don't mind me asking, how much of a discount were you able to get?
@@jackprick9797 $51k with 7800 miles
@@jackprick9797I just purchased a 2021 Certified today right at $46,995 with 34,500 miles. It’s in mint condition black with red interior.
I’m going to do the same!
I have a 460 and love it for all the reasons thst many do not. The 550 is interesting but might be trying too hard. Sorta comic book like, especially OT version . Plus, $84k. Wow. It’s more powerful but also 600-700 lbs heavier. Am sure the 10 speed is smoother but a V6 TT….no thanks, especially at just 1 MPG better than 460.
I recently chose to purchase the final edition 2023 Gx460 with the last V8 of Lexus and Toyota. I traded my perfectly maintained and operating 2019 GX that was the best vehicle I ever owned for it.
I made the choice to forgo the brand new model Gx550 because the 23 is the most proven perfected over engineered modernized reliable vehicle Lexus has ever produced rather than gamble on the new 24 turbo v6 modernized version that has not yet proven itself in build quality reliability and longevity.
I am in love with my 2023 and extremely confident in everything about it starting every time I drive it and confident that I will always arrive at my destination. I hope the new 550 works out for its new owners and that the inevitable bugs that arise with new models are few. I plan on enjoying my GX460 for multiple 100s of thousands miles with only regular scheduled maintenance.
Spot-On! The exact same reasons why I too purchased the 2023 GX460 over the 2024 GX 550. The new 550 also has a very long deposit wait list and the new 550 is several thousand dollars more than the 460- a premium that is not worth it and the trade-offs that come with a new, unproved vehicle. The interior of the 550 looks cheap too and I prefer hard-button controls vice having a larger glass control screen.
My 23 Black Line I believe will hold its value, if I ever sell it.
New one looks better and it’s evident that it’s more off road focused, but the fact that the 460 has all those “sport” plastic things don’t help the case. Get a 460 without so much plastic crap, lift it and it becomes a whole different beast.
Got the chance to check out the white luxury trim at the LA auto show and the interior of the 550 looked bland and felt like a Toyota. Don’t get me wrong, I have been driving Toyota all my life and I love them but in this case, since it’s a Lexus, I feel like it’s not up to par. The 460 with its wood accents scattered through out make it stand out. And the physical buttons you can touch vs almost all on a screen is a no for me. Also, the NA V8, I don’t even need to expound on that. As someone who owns a 78’ Datsun Z, the lesser the tech the better and less headache. Less is more.
About the hood/bonnet: GX460 has somewhat flat hood but it's brother Land Cruiser Prado J150 in it's latest facelift has similar thing the GX 550 has. It's scooped in the middle for off-road purposes. Well more of a notch basically.
We bought a 23 gx460 last year for a couple reasons, 1. Price. A similarly equiped 550 would cost about 15-20k more, that sealed the deal. 2. I don't think it has as much luxury appointments as the 460, just feels a bit bland. A prefected drive train and reliability made the choice for us.
Very useful improvement
I can’t wait for your 24 Taco TRD Pro driving test. Might be the deciding factor for me in getting it.
Heck yea! Getting it edited.
@@TRDJonI’m waiting for that as well
The roaring sound of that v8!
Love them both !.
Glad L didn’t put electronic door handles on the GX, and Im one that prefers the way the rear opens.
Wish L allowed for more customization like the euros, but understand it’d be costly. I like the Overtrail, but wish it had 3rd row. Premium has it, but no 2tone paint, no cooler option, big rims, and option to delete moonroof.
Going to wait a year or two anyway so maybe options will change.
Thank you so much for your videos. I enjoy them. I have a deposit down for a GX 550. I’m leaning towards a basic Overtrail. What would be your recommendation?
go overtrail base model delate the moon roof ,$ saved will pay the tax lic and add overland goodies
Man I truly appreciate you watching and your support. I’d do a basic Overtrail as well. I don’t see the point of plus imo.
V8>V6tt for life. I love my Gx460.
Thanks for your video. The new GX550...how does the driver's seat compare? Does the new GX550 have more driver's side leg room (you mentioned the front seat sits further behind the B-Pillar) and/or more thigh support (longer seat)? For those of us over 6'4", more legroom and thigh support, no matter how much, is most welcome. Thanks!
Great video. When you doing the LC? Thanks!
Just dropped a video yesterday on the LC. Not 100% sure when that drive event is but should be around March/April
Thanks@@TRDJon
Team new school but overtrail plus with all the goodies. Would keep it until was old school. 😆 Yet that’s out my budget. So shopping for the right old school gx at this time.
Thanks for sharing!!
I like the 550! You need one :)
I own a 2020 GX460 and I love it, but the new GX is nice. I like it.
Very nice!
Team V8 💯
What is cargo space like with b9th seats down? Flat floor?
no, the old 4.6 V8 is so much more reliable- just put the old V*8 into the new GX 550 and you have the perfect suv
460 might be bland, but 550 looks like a cartoon. And let's see how that turbo engine is holding up in 10 years.
Im happy to be in a 460. Toyota V8, Tahara built, and 13 years of parts. Add in that Prado base, and you have a great car.....but that 550 does make my jealous.
Solid ride that will last you forever
Hey Jon! This is formerly Kevin Ross, I officially have my CZcams Channel now! I will miss the old GX in some aspects, but in others, I don't. The new GX definitely has a more torquey motor and better feeling quality. However, I will compare the two eventually when I have a chance to, lol. Shouted you out to in a way
Thank you so much man! Best of luck with your future channel!
Thanks John, i love the look of the new GX but with that said I like the old school interior and the v8 in the old model better, I also like the price of the old one LOL
Yea the price will be better for sure! lol
I have put nearly 500K miles on two GX's. 400k on 2005, 75K on the "new" 2021. Love the V-8's!
Turbos won’t go that far.@@loukatzerman4517
I like the "old school" GX460 ....
Liking a lot about the 550. Trail non + with sunroof delete would be my take. Wish it had buttons under the screen like the upcoming LC. Really wish the floor was flat when rear seats were down. Loved that in my 4R. Also, wish the non third row models had storage instead of more useless cup holders. And those 22’s are a bit much. A little too DUB wheels for my taste. Think it would look classier with 19-20”. That’s just my opinion though. Overall, dig the new design.
Thanks for your thoughts!!
I'm not a fan of the 460, so I like everything about the 550 better, except in this case the wheels. I don't like the 22-in wheel package, the 460s wheels look nicer.
Agreed
GX460 front end is headius not good for offload , stupid 3rd row seats and its a v8 gas hog .do like the 109" wb its a land cruiser prado = more utilitarian we dont get
@@youtubecarspottersguide1 agreed
I will stick with the GX 460. That vehicle is unique and there is a reason they didn't replace it year to year as your common Camry. Think of exotic vehicles like Porsche and how often they redesign their cars.
The new GX 550 does not have EKDSS standard across all GX models, it is only on the rail edition. IMHO- not enough improvements in the new GX 550 to offset the old school GX 460. It's more expensive too! I also do not like the GX 550 rear window wiper being located on the bottom, instead of the top of the rear window as per the old GX 460.
I like both. I wish I could take the engine out of the older one and put in the newer one. Until the reliability is known with this new Tundra engine I will take the old school one and be cruising to 200k miles.
The reliability is known... the engine (V35A-FTS family) has been in production products since 2017 (the Lexus LS500) - so it has been used in general production vehicles for 7 years already without widespread/major issue and is "reliable". In particular, the variant used in the GX550 is significantly detuned from even that of the Tundra... so I would expect that the GX550 will probably have the highest rate of reliability for this family of engines.
@@t3h8ar0nyou are 100% right and plus as you said its detuned version as well
Yea time will tell. Apparently these is a 22’ Tundra with 170K miles on it already.
@@TRDJon you are right
Agree. 200k? That’s nothing for the v8.
Definitely nicer, classier, and more powerful than the predecessor. However, I will miss that barn door back trunk and the lovely sound the V8 had. However, the looks and performance of the new one does not disappoint!
Hey are you still giving away pedal commanders? I have a 05 4.7 v8 super clean. I feel a little hesitation sometimes when i accelerate. Help 😅
Would be team new school but the dealer markups are insane still! 15 to 20k over msrp.
GX500 luxury+ or Sequoia TRD Pro. Both look amazing in white.
I’d pick a GX over the sequoia any day
is this at canyon ranch tuscon?

Got the 23 GX460 in January, looking forward to enjoying it for many years. To me the GX460 looks more classy with fully painted body, the GX 550 looks more like a RAV4 on steroids with black plastic around the bottom of exterior. Over time the GX550 might grow on me, who knows I could own one in the future.
How much bigger in width and length of the new 2024 GX550 compare to the GX460? Thanks for the video
It’s several inches in both width, length and height.
The new 550 literally may be too big to fit into some garages. Mirrors may have to be folded in.
@@paulbugoni2846 That’s what I was concerned about. Thanks
Made it bigger, more powerful, heavier and reduced the gas tank from 23 to 21.1 gallons.@@haduong5828
The 460 has power folding mirrors. Any bigger and would not fit in my single garage.
The 550 looks great, but Im not gonna pay double for it vs the 460.
Double? I would love to find a new GX for 40K
@@TRDJon You can find a lightly used "2017-2021 with under 50k miles for $40k. 50k miles is nothing for this vehicle, and for me is considered fairly new. That is still one hell of a truck!
TRD Jon
My 2023 Tundra motor blew up last night.
They are saying either the main bearing or the rod let go.
Toyota is saying motor rebuild.
I am asking for a new motor with big power train warranty or a new truck.
Have any suggestions on what I need to be asking for?
a lot of issues with the new Tundra as I predicted...it is not as good as the old V8s
Great comparison review. Any reason Lexus needs premium fuel vs regular for a Tundra with more HP?
Thanks for watching! I thought the press release said recommended. So you should be good to put regular
the 550 is so improved in looks! the grill is the most improved!
yes approved appearance with the degraded engine
I’d rather buy the newest generation of the legendary LEXUS GX. Modern technology, styling and performance.
a lot of us do not need or desire 'more technology', the prime reason for why we buy the GX 460 'old school' vehicle.
Team new school, but with the OVERTRAIL+
Yessss
What are uour favirite colors? Like the overtrail +, what color would you get.
Either incognito or earth
new one looks awesome, older one looks funnier now
550✅😳
GX460 for us as well. From some of the reviews and what we have read, it is not as nice and luxurious as the outgoing 460. People that own a 460 are not likely to like the 550. I saw on one review that if you were a 4-runner, jeep wrangler, or Ford Bronco and wanted to upgrade then the 550 would be a great upgrade.
GX460 for me. That V8 will outlast the new 4cylinder turbo ten lifetimes.
Its not a 4 cyl but thanks for the comment
The front of the GX550 is plastic fantastic. It is a simpler, less premium design with less expensive looking parts. The Lexus wood supplier and craftsmen must be very upset to lose that account. More plastic fantastic on the interior. Less cost much more. I’d save $20,000 and buy the more premium simple and reliable design with the V8.
Fair enough!
Do you think luxury gx will be priced close to sequoia?
It is close. Lexus pricing and builder tool is out.
cant stop progress! grab the new 550
I'd typically go with the NA V8 but that entire generation of lexus cars and suvs with the MEGA grill is just hideous, I'd take the gx550
Yea it's huge man
@@TRDJon The 2010-2013 GXs had an understated grill and the bumpers don't extend down as low as the 2014+ models.
GX550🔥🔥🔥
The rear of the GX460 looks substantially better than the GX550. The hood of the GX460 looks marginally better than the GX550. The side of the GX550 would look great if not for the odd looking built-in fender flares. They should have made them smoothly molded into the fender. I actually prefer the GX460 headlights by themselves, but the GX550 looks better over all due to the smaller grill size. Honestly, if the GX460 had a smaller grill, I think it would be an all-around better-looking vehicle. Lifted with an off-road bumper, I actually think the GX460 looks much better. Lift/tires/bumpers really makes the 460 a much meaner looking vehicle. The interior of the GX550 is disappointing and looks cheap.
Gx550 interior is extremely clean luxurious high quality and offers brilliant performance technology comfort features value and more.
@@MYLIFEISLEGENDARYMYLIFE836 You sound like an A.I. shill with your replies. I disagree, and as stated.. It looks cheap.
@@Warhorse556 first of all i dont give a crap if you agree with me or not got it tiger . Second thing new gx interior is extremely luxurious and rugged in the same time people like you is the reason gx went to hell of failure.
@@MYLIFEISLEGENDARYMYLIFE836 You replied to my opinion, not the other way around. I don't agree with you. There was no need for you to leave a comment in the first place. You sound like a brochure. If you didn't care about my opinion, you'd have scrolled on past. You can't stand the idea that someone dislikes what you like, so you commented for self validation.
Great comparison. I’ll go old school for true reliability. The new model has a lot to prove plus doesn’t it remind you of a Land Cruiser?
Team v8
Why do so many reviewers call the gx460 tailgate a “barn door” this looks nothing like a barn door. A barn door SLIDES open, the gx460 tailgate SWINGS open, completely different from a barn door.
Looks nice (though not as nice as the prior version IMO), though I'd still take a hybrid LC over both. Love the idea of the onboard power and worth it to me to get that ability over the features and touches this Lexus has.
Fair enough!
I’m tentatively excited about the new GX, but I wouldn’t want it yet. 2 or 3 maybe 4 years from now we’ll see what the feedback is in terms of reliability and other issues. I still don’t like the idea of a twin turbo though, over time thatll put more stress than a NA engine. With that said the engineers at Lexus are smarter than I, I’m sure they got something figured out.
The longer you wait the better it will get. Most likely in 2-3 years they will do a mid cycle refresh and hopefully fix the interior and make it more luxurious, especially for the price.
@@paulbugoni2846 exactly my thought process. I don’t begrudge Jon, or Kirk, or David from AP, but they’re all cheerleaders for everything Toyota. I’m sure if they’re too harsh it’ll jeopardize access in the future. I just think they aren’t being critical enough on a brand new vehicle that likely will have a lot of bugs to be worked out.
@@paulbugoni2846 1. Interior is already extremely luxurious and does not need any more upgrades 2. New gx offers excellent value for money while offering excellent luxury and more. Overall you faux

@@TRDJon do they offer one that opens?
I’ve watched so many of your videos and can’t remember lol
Just the small one opens
Panoramic sunroofs are awful. They have a tendency to leak so if it doesn't open that problem is solved. The worst thing about panoramic sunroofs is they don't have a traditional sliding interior solid sunroof cover, they just have a lame retractable shade. Even when the shade is closed it still allows unpleasant road noise to enter the cabin. The shade also lets through heat from the hot Sun but that isn't as big a problem as the noise.
Maybe the GX 460 may seem old school to you guys and I don't own one, but the new GX looks too much like a range rover. It's not unique. Hell everyone is copying the boxy range rover look these days with the same style interior like everyone else. I don't want to be like everyone else. Vintage usually lends to more character and is well built vs bells and whistles and poorly made yeah?
I'm considering a Lexus GX55] and a Toyota Tundra platinum . How would you describe the interior room and quality in these vehicles? Does one offer a more luxurious and comfortable interior compared to the other?"I'm considering a Lexus and a Toyota Tundra. How would you describe the interior room and quality in these vehicles? Does one offer a more luxurious and comfortable interior compared to the other?"
Old Skool, Ill get the new one 10 years down the road after they iron out all the kinks.
I still really like the old model. The new 2022 center stack modernized the interior as far as I'm concerned. The rest of the interior bits are equal in my opinion (and tumble seat entry is likely cheaper than sliding assembly, even if tumble seat provides better access). Need to keep an eye on what features have been plus'd up to the top trim lines, like ventilated seats and rear heated seats, and real-leather itself. Seems like Toyota has taken those type of features and put them Only in the Platinum trim, and I'm sure the same thing is happening on the Lexus side. The outgoing model is going to remain a very classy vehicle, since Lexus doesn't do the BMW or Mercedes thing of making the customer always wish they have the newest model style every 2-3 years. The front end of the new model also is generally lacking the luxury accents, like OEM chrome inserts and wave-guides in the headlamps. I'm sure those will be gradually added in later model years.
I can't wait to see what a drag race between the two look like- that's going to be the actual tell-tale indicator for performance increase on the newer engine.
You only need to see that obnoxiously large grill to know which one is better
lol 😂
I hate the old grill. If there was a grill/bumper replacement for the 460, I'd rather have that as a dual, daily driver and overlander.
Let's not forget an after market exhaust for that V8 is a man's equalizer.
Idk about that in a suv. It would sound good though!

For the money, I’d probably buy the Sequoia. But I’ll probably end up in the current gen 4 Runner to be honest.

i love that toyota took the new Prado Land cruiser ( GX here and the new US " Land Cruiser") back to its 80's and 90s design roots. that last era was garbage as far as the design of the Prado.
and for all this saying it looks like a defender.... go look at 80s 90s Ladn Crusier prados and tell me what looks like what.
One thing I don't get from Toyota is why call the new land cruiser prado THE land cruiser for us market and close the door to ever bringing back THE land cruiser 300. Why not do what they do all around The world and call it the land cruiser prado? Crap marketing

Gx550 is bad a$$.
For sure!
Looks like it should’ve been a completely all new suv, the outgoing model has that forever good looking look to it.
Lots of apparent cost savings on the new model. No dedicated HVAC controls, hard pass. Reliability not a given with the new complicated power train. Give me the V8 all day long. Oh and the new generation is $3k more.
that 460 looks like its from 1986 - in a bad way.
oooooof

@jojojo6. Same here.
The 550 is a luxury DOWNGRADE.
Ill wait a couple years to see if that v6 is as reliable.
Its already in the LS models, LX, Tundra, and Sequoia
Outside the new GX looks a bit generic, Land Rover like. The rims don’t match the vehicle, but I love that clearance, wow! Use of space, similar. Power, and features, 550. So, I like the excellent value of the outgoing 460.
Agreed. It feels like it's lacking it's own personality. I don't know how else to explain it.
The new one is sooooo much better than the old one in every single objective and subjective measure
Agreed
The 460 literally is forerunner. Very boring looking.
The old grill is horrible
YUGE
Nothing is wrong with the GX460 interior. It's perfect. All they needed to have a few tweaks, such as removal of the trackpad.
Lexus did on a few wrong things in the New GX550. Front, driver and passenger knee width are small, they added soft touch on the driver's side, but honestly it's not great, the gas pedal is way inside.
2nd issue, Lexus should have added independent rear suspense instead of solid axle. This way they can easily make a big room on the back by lowering the floor specially for hybrid battery.
For no reason, they added a big giant engine in the small engine bay.
1.Old gx was ugly outdated overrated overpriced and interior looked more like a gaudy 4 runner with wood trim. 2. New gx has a proper luxurious interior and excellent technology comfort features quality power performance value exterior design and more. Overall its ok to love the old gx and i respect that .however by saying the old one was perfect that is just wrong and blind
It's interesting how vastly different people's opinions of the two vehicles is. I think the GX550 interior looks horribly cheap and prefer the GX460 by a wide margin. I also don't see a comparison between the 4Runner and GX460 other than the size. Drivetrain and interior are completely different. The 4Runner interior is substantially cheaper feeling than that of the GX460. Honestly, there's nothing cutting edge or revolutionary about the new GX550. It may be "more updated" but it's certainly not ground breaking.
The 470 was peak gx until now.
GX550 looks better, the old GX460 looks more luxurious.
Monotone colored interior seems that way on camera for sure.

GX460 is an organic apple and GX550 is non organic which is good looking but not taste and smell.
Wow! That is such a proper description.
The new GX is great but has a plain-burger interior. More textures and material changes. I dislike the dash of the new GX. Like a big wall. Not sure why they did that.
For visibility mainly and point of reference while off roading.
@mjv1967. New gx interior is not plain at all. Its extremely luxurious and very clean unlike the old gx interior which is nasty cheap and outdated

I much prefer the GX 460 being the tried and true old school V8 with many years of refinement and perfecting this legendary. product. I'll take a naturally aspirated V8 over a twin turbo V6 all day long. Factoring in service, simplicity and over all durability I'll take the 460. so much so I purchased two 2023 460s this past year knowing it was the end of an era. I still have a 96 LX 450 I have owned for twenty five years in mint condition and at age 66 I still do all my own basic maintenance specifically oil/filters, differentials, transfer case and brake fluids with pads.
