- Hey, y’all! So many of you have asked me for my thoughts and reactions to the new Lexus GX550 since, as you probably know, I own and LOVE my GX460. So let’s talk about the new GX550 and what I think about it.

The definition of Luxury to me is, CLASSIC. Well built, kinda old but timeless form. Anything that fits this description & gives this aura is classic to me.
Completely agree!
I 100% agree with every point you make about the new GX. I want to love this vehicle and put $ money down for one, but I CAN'T do it because of all the reasons you pointed out. Like you, I do feel that Lexus is catering to the new definition of luxury. Which is sad, because let's face it, it's not going to be the Gen Z that can afford or will buy this vehicle, it's the Gen X and Millennials! And I being a Gen X think the interior of the GX or any of the new Lexus vehicle for that matter, is like a slap in the face and an insult.
Interesting take. Buy Lexus is competing with defender. It’s not uber luxurious.
@bluethundar I completely agree! And yes! It’s not the people who want it that can afford it, yet anyway. Sigh.
And @steveguillory7568 I agree but you that’s the problem-it’s not luxurious. And I know it’s competing with the defender but that also shouldn’t be nearly as expensive as it is but over there it’s because that’s how JLR prices their vehicles which has always been outrageous.
For the price they charge for that interior, that’s more akin to the interior of what the new Prado should be, not a GX. Check out LC300 videos especially the ones in Australia and SEA. The interior of that looks more posh than the new GX.
100% agree, I also cannot justify the new GX price and cancelling my order. I know who Lexus trying to compete, but at what cost? Mazda salesman will tell you their inline 6 CX90 competes with BMW X5, plus, Mazda will be more reliable than BMW, let that sink in for a second.
@@tomkillsall yes, although different platforms but you’re argument is on point.
On another note you’re best served with a pearl white 4Runner Limited in top spec. It’s not any less capable than the GX since they’re cousins and built on similar ladder chassis platforms :)
For a lower price too!
Well said Josh. My 23 GXPP always makes me smile. I can’t imagine living without the wood grain steering wheel on my GX. It’s such a amazing feeling that I can’t describe. And I couldn’t agree more with you on the Grand Seiko as well 👏
Thank you, and right!? I know I could never give up my wooden steering wheel!!!
What is gxpp?
GX460 Premium Plus
Luxery to me is the "warm/cozy home" feeling around you. The 550 is just plain and pastic. Your videos always makes me feel good about my 23 GX Premium purchase.
Absolutely fantastic auto CZcamsr. Keep this up!
I love your “warm/cozy home” description because that’s exactly what that feeling is! And ENTIRELY plain and plastic. Thank you so much for your kind words and for watching!
I agree, a sunroof should open.
Love your content ! Keep up the good work !
Thank you so much!
These are such valid criticisms - I actually thought you were being generous because I really have lost some of my loyalty to the brand because of the company’s current direction. I find it a bit criminal they would allow this kind of price gouging for an arguably even worse experience, and it’s sad to me we’re in the minority in this!
You really lucked out snagging the last great GX!
Hahaha I didn’t want to be entirely negative. 😂😅 But you’re right I probably gave it more praise than it deserves. And I completely agree, price gouging is the word!!! I couldn’t believe how expensive it was when the builder finally went live. And yes! I’m so glad I got mine when I did.
Luck had little to do with Josh’s selection since he and others knew that the smooth V8 was being abandoned and that an unknown newer form factor was coming! It was the last chance to buy a new reliable smooth GX460 and the savy people took advantage of this fact. Another thing, you do not buy the first model of a new model introduction-it is unproven and it will have inevitable shortcomings that await correction in succeeding years!
Great videos! Hope you post a video on the LC or comparing the ES/LS.
I don’t think you can really compare the ES and LS. One is a premium midsize front wheel drive sedan based on the Camry/avalon and the other is a flagship rear wheel drive luxury sedan. Not to mention the nearly $50K price difference.
*1000% spot on. Cute how the TNGAF consolidation is profitable for Toyota, but for the customer it's a different story. Hopefully Lexus will "fix" the GX550 in future trim updates. Did you try the LX600 ultra-luxry trim?*
Right!? And no I have not gotten to drive the LX600 but I can say from having driven a Sequoia I do not care for the new twin turbo V6. It makes more power on paper but the transmission and turbo lag get in the way of it being as smooth and linear as the V8.
Gx550 = no kdss except overtrail plus = body roll and wobble. Kdss is what made 460 drive flat aroundnthe corners. Many youtubers already stated noticeable body roll on 550.
That’s shocking! I actually had just assumed that KDSS was standard fare as it always has bee. HARD PASS from me based on that too!!!
@joshjamescars sadly it's true:
czcams.com/video/0hqZCK3iyLI/video.html
True. I was disappointed Lexus removed KDSS on certain trims. Presumably Lexus knows the majority of buyers don’t even know what it is. And that KDSS wasn’t used by the same majority. On the GX 460 though with KDSS the anti-sway bars are super thick so do a great job reducing body roll for normal driving. That’s the trick the 550 will miss except in Overtrail or whatever it’s called.
Agreed with your points, Josh. Also grabbed a 23’ GX a few weeks ago because I wanted the dinosaur (and the discount).
Anyways cheers from a follower also located in North Austin!
Terrific!!! And yes the discounts are or were amazing while they lasted!
Thanks for this video - very much appreciated. While there is a lot of hoopla around this new GX, a LOT of current GX owners are disappointed in many ways, including price. So, it will be interesting to see who buys this - my guess is that it will attract a lot of new buyers, but existing ones might stay away.
Yes!!! Toyota’s new pricing in general is outrageous. $60K for the top end trims of the new Tacoma? I think the F not. I don’t think many current Toyota owners can fathom ever spending as much as they’re asking on their new cars.
Nice review
Thank you!
The GX550 exterior is outstanding, A+. The interior though, is a C. It's like any of the other current Lexus cars now, with very little distinctive character. They even took away 3rd zone climate on certain trims
Completely agree! And yikes I didn’t realize that, that’s not acceptable for a luxury car meant to carry at least 5 people. On a Land Cruiser, okay. But not on a “Lexus”
Just bought a 2023 GX… I’m over the moon and loving the v8 the steering wheel the smooth
I really appreciate the details you compared here. Very helpful as considering purchase of 460 vs 550 overtrail+. Agree on Mark Levinson, had it years ago in 450h (used) and Loved it. Missed it greatly when i traded out.
Hello! I think you have two extraordinarily different cars there to choose from, especially with the Overtrail+ and you really have to think about what you value. IMO they’re really not comparable except in name. The mission, size, price, features, design, etc. are completely different. Also, many dealers have sold through most of their 460s at this time so if you want one new, buy in the next couple weeks.
Great video! You have a new subscriber :)
Thank you so much and welcome aboard!
I now own a 2023 GX460 Premium trim... in Black/ Caviar. I also owned GX460 luxury which didn't justify for $$.. I maybe trading it for Tundra Platinum or 1794 which IMO Interior is nicer...LOL I love the Toyota brand/Lexus But you're 100% correct!!
Congrats on the GX, and I actually agree. The Tundra Capstone has a better looking interior than this GX. Though there’s tons of cheap plastic in there too, but that’s par for the course for a half ton truck.
Oh yeah lots of plastic around..But to be expected.. I've owned AMG Benz before..Plastic there as well..vents some parts of doors.. It's all to keep cost down...Also plastic is just best for certain areas on cars.. Trucks are meant for working and outdoor active lifestyles..I would be afraid of driving a super lux-out truck..LOL @@joshjamescars
Josh, enjoyed your video! I own a 23 GX Premium Plus with sport design. The Mark Levinson is awesome! The new GX550 looks good on the outside but the inside I feel luxury is not to be found. I am sure the build quality is excellent! I read somewhere that Lexus is bringing 30K to the US the first year but the deposits exceed 30K! I also heard 2023 was the 2nd best selling year for the GX460! Keep those videos coming!
Thank you!! And with how many people have told me they bought a GX460 in the last year or so I wouldn’t be surprised if 23 was one of the highest sales years. So many people have also told me they bought a 23 to replace their 2009+ as they wanted the last of the generation. The 30K number also sounds about right, I’ve also heard that only 5% of production will be under $70K too with most being between the $75 and $85K range.
Josh, you broke this down like a scientist would breakdown molecular structure. I love it, Thanks for the info.
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed!
I totally concur with your observation. I am a third-time Lexus owner and have found a decline in the quality and presentation of their product. I have decided on my next car to look elsewhere.
Yep, same here! Won’t be buying anything from them until they get it together… although they say they’re going all EV by 2028 which I’m not interested in.
I’m 52 and just bought a 2023 GX Premium Plus, bench seat was a must, in Atomic Silver with black interior. I went with silver because it was so shiny! I was forced to choose black interior cuz we have 2 boys that play sports (=dirt). I LOVE MY V8 GX! Your vids helped me get the hubby into the dealer. Thx! PS: Hubby is gonna order a TX plug in with the V6 next year. lol
I’m SO jealous you got the atomic silver with the bench seat! That was my ideal combo but every single atomic silver one that was coming in when I was buying was a luxury and or had the captain’s chairs and so I ended up with black because I wanted the bench and Ecru interior. Congrats on finding that and excited for your future TX PHEV!
Very well said Josh! In Canada, the new GX overtrail + priced similarly to a well equipped Porsche cayenne, I’m cancelling my GX order. I’m a bit angry at Toyota Lexus
I'm a relatively new Toyota convert, worked for GMC Truck and Ford in the past. Employee pricing and some loyalty...Have a 2014 4Runner and love it. Bought a 23 Rav4 Limited Hybrid for our daughter has been a great vehicle. Forced to pay over sticker...Never again! Would like a 4Runner TrailHunter or possibly a Lexus Overtrail. Just the pricing and fuel economy on the Lexus is holding me back. If they keep up gouging and over sticker pricing I may reconsider either.
The Lexus fuel economy is bad but since they both require premium now (assuming the 4Runner will too), it might be worth going with the Lexus.
Your not alone, I just bought a 23 gx460, love it so far, don’t need or want the latest tech or the v6 turbo or a panoramic moon roof, also I like the older body style, to me it has a more luxurious look with paint all the way down, no plastic look at the bottom, the new body looks like a more off road look. But, in the future the new style might grow on me.
Congratulations on the new GX!!! Glad you got one while you still could. Last I checked my dealer was down to less than 10. And I totally agree and hear you at not needing the new tech. I actually had all that in the 2023 NX hybrid we had for a bit and I didn’t care for it at all because you have to do almost everything in the screen. No thanks. And I like the new styling but it doesn’t look premium to me.
Makes me want to shop for GS now.
Always fun browsing GS!
I love your white Prado toy in the background. That’s my car haha 😅😅
And agree with your 550 assessment 😊 In fact the 550 should’ve been the new Prado.
That’s so cool! Love the Land Cruiser Prado I wish we had gotten it here.
@@joshjamescars I think you would’ve enjoyed it. Imagine a toned down 460 with a 1GR hehe. And I think if toyota USA did that there wouldn’t be a 4Runner.
Hopefully, the new GX550 still will come with the venerable and highly sought-after Panasonic 12V battery!
Seriously, though, to me, my 2023 GX460 Premium is a throwback to the OG LS400. I think that Lexus has diminished the GX550 by removing any form of KDSS from _most_ (but not all) trim levels, by removing the sliding second row rear seats, and by only offering 5 passenger seating for models with e-KDSS; I also wonder what the new maintenance schedule will be like relative to the (port-injected only) NA V8 ...
Compared to the GX460, maybe the new GX550 will have a complementary passenger-side auto-dimming side mirror now, and the additional transmission gears will hopefully yield smoother slow-speed stop-n-go gear shifting. I also actually like the older 'barnyard-style' rear door primarily due to my height. Overall, for my uses, though, I am *definitely* glad to have my 'luxury' GX460 over the newer GX550!
Yes, I completely agree! And actually, I didn’t even realize that KDSS was no longer standard until a few other people commented about it!! It’s absolutely insane to me that they would take that away from the new one. I guess yet another thing to force people to upgrade for. Ugh. And you’re so right about our GXs being a real throwback to the older LSs. I was driving a new RX350 the other day (video coming soon) and it was so incredibly underwhelming in all respects compared to old Lexus.
I couldn't agree more! You are definitely not alone on this, and I absolutely love your content. 😉 I hope the "hype" and marketing on the LC 250 and the GX 550 don't sway me into trading in my 23' GX with 3,000 miles. I know better, but I'm always falling for Toyota's latest and greatest. Damn them! lol 🤣 If I do trade, I'm taking my wooden steering wheel with me.
Haha! And thank you so much! I do think if you wanted to trade for one the Land Cruiser would be okay as long as it too isn’t super expensive fully loaded. Though $65-70K for that is… not great. That said, I’m with you, you should absolutely take your wooden steering wheel with you!!! 😂
@@joshjamescars Totally agree. I have deposits down for the First Edition LC, and if it's 65k-70k, I'm out! 😁 People around me would say...sure I am. 🤣
Ohhh that would be awesome!!! Go and drive the hybrid max drivetrain in the Grand Highlander. It’s got some odd power delivery behaviors but it’s totally acceptable for a Toyota, IMO! Though… like you say, idk if for $70K! 😅
@@joshjamescars Thanks Josh! Yeah, if it's not buttery smooth like the GX 460 V8 it will definitely bother me some. I'll take your advice on the test drive. Take it easy.
Totally agree with your philosophy about the GX 460 vs the new 550 GX Lexus ! I do have the 2022 GX 460 luxury and there is no comparison on the interior. The 2022 gives you that luxury feel that you were talking about with the luxury, comfort and confidence that you can basically do anything or go anywhere you wanna go with no worries about the reliability. Much like you, I’m a Toyota guy and always have been & probably always will be, but I am a bit disappointed in the direction Toyota/Lexus is going. Keep up the great commentary enjoy watching no pun intended.
Thank you so much for the kind words! And I completely agree with your comments about the interior.
Agree with your thought on the older made in Japan Lexus models. I have a GS F V8 Lexus sedan that is truly special and rare. No squeaks or rattles after 6 years. I cannot give up my 470 HP V8 for an emasculated 4 cylinder. My F is a garage gueen with only 20,000 miles. Every time I drive it feels truly special. Real leather, Mark Levinson stereo and fantastic fit and finish. I feel like I will keep this car as long as I live.
Enjoy your videos and presentation. I will have to check out the Grand Seiko, I have a few Rolex watches that I enjoy. Cheers!
Thank you! And yes keep that GS F forever. That’s my plan for my GX which is also a garage baby. And yes! Grand Seiko is just phenomenal. They are truly the (old) Lexus of the watch world. The finest craftsmanship (by master Takumi watchmakers) at any price point.
Oh! Just noticed there are two of them. What are the scales?
All of your criticisms are valid. One can deal with the Toyota drivetrain but not a Toyota interior, especially at these prices.
The Car Care Nut Channel-“Lexus used to build tanks, now they build cars.”
Grab an old school IS, ES or LC500 before they are gone.
Yes! I mean Lexus has always used Toyota engines which was part of their formula for success. My GX has the same UR-series engine as used to be in the Tundra. But yes, at the price, the interiors are just not acceptable.
We have a 2017 Lexus GX 460 and love it, quiet, powerful enough and reliable. Feels good to drive. Wonder if the GX550 will feel the same? We are much m ore seriously looking at the LCLC
Hello! Honestly I think your best bet if you’re seriously looking for a new truck and willing to buy right away is going to be a 2023 GX. Turbo and turbo hybrid engines drive very differently just due to their nature. They’re smaller displacement engines being induced by force so you’ll feel them working a lot harder under load than a V8. So piecing together what I can gather from your other comments, you’ll be looking to tow and haul with it, and unless you need the 7,500-9,000 pound towing capacity of the new GX550, you’re best off with another 2nd-gen GX. And I personally wouldn’t want to tow/haul any serious loads with the turbo-hybrid 4-cylinder. It struggles enough just moving the car around.
Hi Josh. I fully agree with your comments. The interior of the new GX is rather pedestrian for a nearly 85K luxury SUV (Luxury+ trim). I have a 2020 Land Cruiser that I was thinking of trading in for the Luxury + but my interior is much more luxurious in an understated way (wood trim more soft touch leather).
I may wait a few years to see if Lexus makes some upgrades to the GX once hearing these fair critiques. It’s a beautiful car on the outside, but not enough attention to detail on the inside.
Also, it still seems rather tight inside even though it’s purportedly 4” wider. I sat in it at the Chicago Auto Show.
Peter
Hello! If I were you I would hold onto that Land Cruiser for as long as you can. And even more than the interior, the big difference that you will find in the new GX is the change from a silky smooth, naturally aspirated V8 to a turbo V6 from Toyota’s Dynamic Force engine family which all drive rather roughly and with a good amount of turbo lag. I’ve had a good number of LX600 owners who upgraded from a Land Cruiser or LX570 tell me that they’ve been disappointed with the turbo lag and overall lack of refinement of the new V6 powertrain that is in all Toyota’s recent trucks.
Thanks so much for your input. This is my second Land Cruiser (I had a 2000 and now a 2020) and i really love it. However, I crave better tech, a slightly more updated design, and fuel economy) with the feel and silky smoothness of that V8 without spending over 100K for an LX600 (which is a bit too flashy for me). I get your point on the V6 not making the grade. No KDSS ON The Luxury+ was a mistake. Just disappointing. I will have to stand pat for awhile to see what transpires at Toyota/Lexus. Best.
All solid points. Hopefully, a GX F Sport comes down the line.
Yes! Here’s hoping!
I love my 2023 GX460 luxury with sport package. A refined dinosaur for sure, but it rides better than most modern luxury SUV’s. Not to mention reliability. Grand Seiko’s Zaratsu polishing is amazing craftsmanship. I have the Rolex Explorer 2 white dial and I love it but my Tudor Black Bay is a better value and more comfortable watch.
Yes! Could not agree more. I love my Black Bay! The GMT finally convinced me to give Tudor a shot and I’m glad I did!
Absolutely agree with you Josh 💯%. I’m keeping my 23’ GX460 until the wheels come off😂. The GX460 has just the right amount of technology, style and comfort that I need. Don’t get me wrong, the new GX550 is nice, but I’ll stay with my GX460.
Right!? Im so glad you decided to trade your 4Runner and get your GX when you did! Cheers, friend!
Where did you get that cool GX model in the background? Thanks.
Thank you! They’re actually Land Cruiser Prado die cast cars from Japan but you can buy them on eBay. And to answer your scale question, I believe they’re 1:20 and 1:30? I might have that wrong. You can see them in more detail in my Q&A video; skip to the chapter about the die cast model cars I have.
I'm really curious as to what the new 4Runner will end up being?
I think they’re saying it’ll be a budget off-roader so it’ll have the basic 2.4L turbo I4 instead of the hybrid max. Probably the rather utilitarian Tacoma interior. And definitely smaller and narrower than the Land Cruiser.
Hey Josh, just found your channel and am already a fan. I think the new definition of luxury has become aligned with “over-engineered” or at least the appearance of over-engineered. Think Yeti, Stanley, Apple Watch Ultra, new Bronco, etc. Maybe the new the new GX hits that chord. Thoughts?
Hello! You have such an interesting take on luxury, I never thought of it that way! But you’re definitely right, in a world where “normal” things are no longer built to last, I can definitely see how that can be taken as luxury. Which is such a shame though, I don’t think having something that’s over engineered should be a “luxury” that only privileged folks can buy. Ugh. But anyway, glad you enjoyed and thanks for watching!!
@@joshjamescars Thanks Josh! I probably articulated my point poorly. I do agree with your perspective on luxury. To that end, we’re waiting for a 22 GX to be shipped in so we can check it out. Wish it had the Mark Levinson audio but I could seem to find one close by. Cheers!
new definition of lux is "tech"... they deleted wood 🪵 and replaced it with hi-res screens... Lexus figured they can cheap on materials if the "tech" dazzles enough to make the same 😢
We bought a 2023 GX 460 for all the reasons you described. Wanted a new one before they were no longer available. The engine and powertrain are bulletproof and interior much nice than new 550. Just my opinion.
I think your opinion aligns with most GX460 owners’ opinions! :)
Ohhh look at him at 5k...congrats
And ty for the Friday video and doing this review for us. Are we going to see you reacting to Lexus LBX Morizo rr too? fingers cross
And you nailed with your review. And savagegeese touched the price point.
wonder if this Lexus is Japanese or American🤔. The luxury aspect is not giving what supposed to give, Genesis and Infinite even Grand Cherokee interior look more luxury than this Lexus.
Oh wow! I actually hadn’t realized that until you said so, LOL! Thank you! And as for the LBX, I have to look more into it and see what’s going on. It’s interesting though because it’s got some DNA that I don’t know where exactly it came from. The screen, for example, looks suspiciously different, kind of like what we see in some of the Chinese GAC Toyotas. And I COMPLETELY agree at Jeep doing better interiors. I had a Wagoneer rental last year and I was blown away by the interior quality in it.
Interesting pov in this video. I used to own a gs400, and the only thing I didn’t like was the wood. I have a deposit on a gx550 OT+, and am super happy it doesn’t have wood or piano black. BTW, I’m a Boomer so don’t think this is a generational thing. Different strokes I guess
I think another difference here is I’m guessing you’re at the point in your life where you don’t need to think about money and can splurge on anything you like (which I envy, haha!) And if I was in that position I’d probably buy one just for the hell of it. But as a millennial I just don’t see enough value in it that I need to be willing to spend the money on it. But also, I’d highly recommend test driving a new Toyota Sequoia as it has the same engine and the interior materials in new Lexus are about the same as new Toyota these days so it’s going to feel a lot different than your LS400.
Great video Josh. Would have been nice for you to have had the actual vehicle to compare like all these other CZcamsrs who bash Lexus. I agree over the years there has been a change that is Toyota becoming more of a competition for Lexus. I have a 2005 RX330 that is pure luxury, everything still works. I use it to transport my husky around. Also, the 2019 RX450 H and the 2022 GX460. I have always admired the GX and finally decided to get one. A couple weeks ago the 450H was being serviced so we received a $72,000. 2023 RX500H F Sport as a loaner. I was not impressed. Yes it was loaded with all of the options, but it wasn’t inspiring compared to the other RX vehicles we have. The ride quality wasn’t there. I feel the 2005 RX rides better and yes that vehicle is 19 years old and just pure quality with a lot of upgrades. Also, your comments about the add ons increase the price. Taxes, tags and any dealer mark ups. At the time I purchased the GX there were no deals inventory was low. Now there is a surplus with discounts, go figure.
Hi Joann! Yes, I really hope to get to drive one soon and see in person exactly how it drives. And oh yes I’ve also driven the new 500h and also came away not impressed. Especially not compared to your RXs! And yes, the final out the door price on these is going to be ridiculously expensive. Thanks as always for watching!
I definately like the LC more than the GX. I also like the new 4Runner too.
I agree. I really wish they’d all come here as the Land Cruiser and we could get a V6 Land Cruiser.
@@joshjamescars It is good to have more engine choices. Although I am not a big fan of the 3.4L engine, I hope the detuned version that is on the GX might be the better version after all considering the issues the ones on the Tundra trucks and Lexus have, I am a bit worried about the V6 3.4L TT.
I THink and also am surprised David of automotivepress seem to change his mind and praised the newer 550.
I love David but he rarely says anything bad about Toyota (though I suspect he also owns a good amount of equity in Toyota so like anyone who owns a stake in any company, you have to consider that when it comes to his motivation and incentive) and so I think you have to take. That said, as fellow Japanese national, I can also say that it’s seen as shameful to speak poorly about your country and its people (and by extension of that the products they create). I just don’t personally share that view and think that people should hold companies to task when they deliver underwhelming or overpriced products.
Absolutely. Just yesterday I had the 1 year service done on my 2023 GX Nori Green Black Line. This new interior is a 'cheap fake Rolex' in my book. This thing is not a real Lexus anymore.
Hahaha! I might have to steal the cheap fake Rolex analogy from you but that’s spot on! 😂
I feel the same way about the new RX. It’s nice but nothing special like it used to be.
I completely agree!! It’s like any run of the mill Toyota now. Just fine but nothing special.
Good sir. Would it be possible for you to review a Toyota HiLux with a 1GD 2.8 turbo diesel engine? 😊
Hello again! I would love to review a Hilux but sadly we don’t get them here in the states. If I’m ever able to somehow get my hands one one I will absolutely do one!
@@joshjamescars hi bro yes do it, that would be great. I always enjoy your content. Hope you can review the GX550 too, would love to get your thoughts on that.
Luxury is quality that is not immediately seen.
Spot on commentary concerning the convoluted mixing of the new 550 with the new cheaper Land Cruiser-it sends mixed messages. I also agree about the non-opening panoramic roof! I want an opening sunroof or nothing at all! The uniform body color trim is a great idea too! The numerous number of GX 550 models is both confusing and limiting in the fact that many options are married to only a certain 550 model type! The controls on the new GX 550 glass screen is a non-starter, as is the lack of interior refinement for more leather and wood accents. Wireless charging and a greater towing capacity is NOT an advocacy for most luxury brands. No EKDSS across all the 550 models is a mistake. Most buyers who will never take the 550 off-road! 18:51
Completely agree! The omission of KDSS on almost all grades makes absolutely no sense to me; it means this thing is going to drive like a 4Runner SR5 or TRD Pro. Not luxurious at all.
yup. 100%. My only issue with the LC (ok, 2 issues) is the lack of a 3rd row option, and the limited supply. (ok, 3 things, the hybrid battery screws up the storage area in the back). If CZcams journalists are to be believed, the GX will be produced in relatively high volumes (no problem), but the LC with be a more limited production. Which means, more ADMs on the LC. So i'm guessing it will still sell for GX prices. The best thing Toyota could do for the LC, is to build the damn things in adequate volume, so dealers can't gouge the customers. I"m not ready for base plastics of the entry level LC, so i'm already (guessing) looking at low 60's. Add ADM, and a mid spec LC might cost $70K. That's a no-go for me. Or for $70K, i'd go for a GX. Sure, the GX will have ADMs too, for awhile, but production volume (supply) can (help) kill the whole ADM crap going on right now.
You just need to find a good dealer who doesn’t charge markups. They are out there, neither our Toyota dealer nor our Lexus dealer charge markups. And if you want it badly enough, buy out of state and drive it home.
@@joshjamescars we'll see. I get markups on rare/new cars. It really boils down to how much, and for how long. If any dealer has a wait list for a car, and still sells for MSRP, they deserve a metal! and lots of love.
Very good video. I don't care for the 550. I do think the newer 460 is a better value all around. To me, the 550 looks an all day off roader and just don't click for me. I hate the front windshield. Total turn off. Will start looking for a clean, 2 years old, dealer cert, 460.
I just drove the new 550 yesterday (video coming next week) and it’s a real turd by comparison. Cheap as can be on the inside, and nowhere near as nice to drive as the 460.
I like your black one
Thank you! And yes it’ll be with me until the wheels fall off.
Please compare Lexus GX with Defender 90
Hi there. I unfortunately don’t have as much knowledge of the Defender as the GX but between the two there are some huge differences right off the bat-the Defender 90 is the two door and Much smaller and narrower than this new GX.
550 looks are too Range Rover too make it unique. The new Land Cruiser has more retro looks than the 550. I like 550, but the screaming, later years, of 460 look will always be unique in the heritage, I like it the most, visually.
I agree except that I think Toyota did the look first with the 70 and 80 series Land Cruisers which predate the Land/Range Rovers. And I also completely agree about the last years of the GX460. Greatly prefer the looks of mine to the 550.
❤
I am of like mind. I want the V8. I want the proven reliability.
Smart man!
I was telling from the beginning that this new GX 550 have a Toyota interrior, not a lexus as we know it. Lexus did an awesome job on the exterior but they cut costs on everything else what made Lexus a Lexus. I was so sure that im getting this 550 but now, 4-5 months I'm 99% sure that I want loaded 23 460 for less money and with luxurious interrior. This new GX became a regular Toyota Prado with nicer interrior and a lexus bage. I'm not buying it.
The 2023 GX as far as I’m concerned is THE last great Lexus SUV, but they are quickly disappearing, I know my city’s dealers are completely sold out, so best to get one as soon as you can!
Surface of the sun. LMAO!!😂😂
90 k is a ridiculous price for that new gx ....i would go for the gx 460...and save that money ,if i had to get the new one the max i would go for the gx 550 is the premium plus .that it self comes close to 75 to 80k
I agree! My problem with the Premium Plus is that it doesn’t have any real “luxury” grade equipment. No ventilated seats, no mark Levinson, no third/rear zone climate, and no KDSS. Might as well have a Land Cruiser then.
As I’ve mentioned the new GX 550’s interiors are Toyotafied screaming for help in the luxury appearance department. I have no clue especially because there are so many Luxury SUV’s that also great AWD Systems and look very upscale as well. This Lexus is a let down. I don’t get their thinking. It isn’t cool.
I completely agree! I don’t know what Lexus is doing these days, they’re really starting to enter their Infiniti phase…
I’m looking for to trade my 2023 Blackline Eminent white for a 2023 Gx460 Luxury. Ill skip the GX550
If you want to buy it new you need to act now. Many dealers have already sold through the last of their inventory.
I think I’ll look at the used market . I’ll lose a lot money if I trade in for a new Luxury .
@trieunguyen5897 True. What makes you want the luxury instead of your Black Edition? Having driven both I prefer the ride that you get in the black edition and premium plus without the adaptive suspenison.
it’s interesting how some genesis vehicles are closer to that old school form of luxury compared to lexus/toyota
thank you for your honest review
Yes, I agree completely! And thank you for watching!
You’re not the only one that’s disappointed and being a true fan you can actually call out what is wrong and what is Lexus shaping into which is not a good story based on this new GX they have completely dropped the ball for whatever reason I have no clue that they obviously have a reason. Yeah, I am not understanding that coming from the older Lexus lines. This thing is a piece of plastic.
Yes! Completely agree, and I see more and more people saying the same now that they’ve started to hit dealers. I don’t know what Lexus was thinking here. I personally will be holding onto my GX for as long as it will run but I’ve seen many others who wanted to trade out for the 550 feeling like they don’t have any real viable upgrade path since the new one is all plastic fantastic.
Luxury is not is a mere name or brand, rather it is in the execution of the final product. Some people (connoisseurs ) know this to be true, neophytes never will! The $81 pricing point is approaching that of a Mercedes. Look if you want to do a real off-road vehicle at a great price, then buy a 4Runner TRD or a Land Cruiser! No EKDSS across all 550 models is a major mistake too.
Yes! Agree completely at your take on luxury and also at buying a 4Runner or a Land Cruiser instead.
4 cars in one year. You need another channel. Living Large, like Josh.
Haha! Four not super exciting cars. 😂 And we only sold two of them because we were able to get more than we paid due to the models and the demand for hybrids.
Lexus has definitely downgraded their bespoke quality incrementally since the LS 400 , saying that I will still consider them over the Europeans
Depending on what class you’re shopping in, Acura and Infiniti are also both great choices!
The only true land cruiser is a 70 series, which of course we will never have in the states due to our wonderful government over reach. This is so sad being that the rest of the world gets them😢
Yes, the 70 series is terrific. I wouldn’t want to be in one in a crash on US freeways, but I would love one to take off-roading!
Just toooo much money again
