No one has ever said with a straight face that the V6 sounds better than the V8...
We bought a GX460 two months ago with the premium plus and sport packages. It has rear captains seats and it has 19 inch upgraded wheels. We absolutely love it. Been on two trips and we average 20-21 mpg hwy 17-18 mpg city. The ride is fantastic and quiet. We are getting a boat soon so the 6500 lb tow rating is great as well.
Good comparison video, Ben!
It's pretty much impossible to find a bad review of the GX 460. I've looked.
This isn’t an objective review. For the money considering the markups I would take the GX.
Same with 4Runner.
Your wife legit uses that 4runner as a trash can my goodness 🤦🏻♀️😂
She's be put to the curve
GX460 engine is so smooth, and KDSS is standard. I’d say GX for sure. In fact, I have a 2016 GX luxury trim!
Luxury trim is the only way to go with GX and Mark Levinson sound but it’s a $85k vehicle out the door.
@@Mr99Burns Yes, the 2023 model is getting expensive. Buying a used one is probably the way to go now. This thing lasts forever. Paying half of the money of the 3/4 of life span is a good move.
As much as my sister loves her Ford Bronco, she still would rather have the 4 Runner. We have too many issues with Jeep to reconsider the brand.
As much as narrator loves the 4Runner (which I do as well) but the GX all day. Bigger, more refined V8. KDSS full time. Tows 1000 lbs more. Lexus insulation, ride quality & premium materials all around. Just more to love.
I just did this exact comparison in Canada. 4Runner won on the price/value proposition. In Canada, the TRD OR (all are premium) is $62k taxes in, the GX460 (cheapest model) is $85K taxes in. Both are made in Tahara and assembly quality is pretty much identical (materials are not). If the GX came with the Prado rear locker and clearance, then maybe I'd consider it. Went with the 4Runner. I've never bought a vehicle on name plate/prestige. For me it's a tool, and the 4Runner is pretty tough to beat...
Ben don't let red springs and "fox shocks" fool you. TRD is a sticker package for the US market. The GX460 gets Tokico shocks matched perfectly to the GX460/Landcruiser Prado. Tokico is no mickey-mouse shocks supplier and is arguably the best Japanese shock supplier 😄. Ultra durable. Great video
Watching this video.. lol.. the dude almost sounds like a 4Runner fan boy with little knowledge about the Landcruiser Prado aka GX.. Having owned both, I just had to laugh ... no point in correcting this naive comparison!
@@M5_Sonu 4R is the smart purchase between the two.
@@noctilucent7396 lol.. Ok!
@@M5_Sonu I mean the gx is cute, it's a cute prado buuut... it takes premium so... not necessarily a shtf vechile and it yells HEY IM DRIVING A LEXUS! 4R is a prado in its basic trim takes regular fuel and it has a toyota badge
@@noctilucent7396 both are Toyota fan boi
I think the GX implies that you used to have a 4Runner and you liked it so much that you upgraded.
Like graduating from beer to single malt!
We ended up with a GX because we couldn't find a 4Runner in the trim and color that we wanted. So glad that the 4Runner wasn't available. Love the GX.
It’s tempting but I’d rather be cool. GX is not cool its screams old. Sale numbers don’t lie either if you compare the two. 4Runner aged so well that it became modern retro. I believe SUVs are not meant to be fast anyway so totally ok with 4.0 runner engine. GX will ride better not surprise there but I prefer 4runner slightly unrefined ride and a much better look.
Haha
More like you got married and can't do the things you used to do anymore.
I don't think the GX is an upgrade in any way, but engine, and 0 to 60 times show its negligible.
Gx may be smoother to drive. Not sure how that matters.
Gx has less useable space, worse looks, a worse hatch system , more reliance on tech , worse gas mileage.
It's only real advantage on paper is towing capacity , which imo is a legitimate reason to choose one.
Just bought the 2023 GX last week and we LOVE it. Don't care that its dinosaur, what great ride!
I was just thinking how annoying that droning exhaust noise is on the 4Runner, when Ben goes "this definitely sounds better" :)
If I was going to drive it a lot, 4 Runner. If my wife was going to drive it full time, she can have the Lexus
GX 460 all the way. Super smooth, comfortable, reliable. V8 plus the 6 speed is so, so much better than the 4Runners V6 and 5 speed. A 5 speed in 2022/ 2023 is unacceptable.
Cool vid man i was out shopping also test drove both the trd pro 4runner and the gx460 but i ended up buying the gx460.i just felt it drove alot smoother for me and felt super comfortable but once i did get the gx460 i bought new tires and got the falken wildpeaks at3w because wisconsin weather can be pretty bipolar😂
I just want a 4runner that keeps the same exterior styling but gets MAJOR interior upgrades, like the new tundra and seqouia. I'd also really love as close to 25mpg combined as possible. My hybrid F150 gets 25 city but I want a 4runner SO BADLY. Definitely want the 4runner to drive better on regular roads too.
Same 😢😢😢
4runner rear hatch makes more sense, with the slide out cargo tray you get that mini land cruiser tailgate feature
I think the 4runner limited matches up better with the GX
GX460 all day long.......The younger crowd will lean towards the TRD 4 Runner. Its two different buyers......... 2023 last year of the GX V-8 ☹
If deep pockets were a thing for me I would park a GX next to my 4Runner in the driveway in a heartbeat.
Why not just clean up the car before recording instead of exposing your wifes cleanliness?
I agree. She's FILTHY
What a filthy vehicle (4runner).
Seems like this 4runner owner just did the review to put a much more expensive GX down..what a joke!!! Apparently he has no clue of how amazing the GX is.
Thanks for showing and comparing the keys... very thorough 👍👌
Gx460 for the win. Both are great though. Gx just handles better, shifts smoother, cabin is quieter, this list just goes on…
the gx460 is closely related to a Prado lc150 and for that it's my pick
Factory yes the 4Runner is more capable. Modded though, would take a GX 10/10 times. Full time 4x4 is amazing in heavy rain and snow. Can drive up to 55 mph with the diff locked on the GX in slush and slippery conditions. The V8+6 speed can actually handle 35’s. The 4Runner drives like dog shit on bigger tires in terms of gear searching and power. I’m only about 6k-7k worth of mods into my GX with 35’s, wheels, 4” body trim all the way around for better angles, Ironman FCP suspension and I’d put it up against similarly modded 4Runners any day.
GX also has a reliability edge for sure in terms of the power train being so overbuilt.
Powertrain on the 4Runner is overbuilt.
@@skoolynugenator1802 The motor yes. Worse trans and again, when you go beyond 32” tires it feels like crap to drive compared to a GX. I’m on 35” and still have most of my acceleration without a regear.
I have a 2022 4R stock and love both. I am not a mechanic and agree with all the points for GX but they are both equally reliable from all the data. The 5-speed trans is solid again from all the data. ppl abuse the 4Runner off-road and not many trans failures that I read about. I enjoy everyone's viewpoint, experience, and knowledge of both of these legendary vehicles. What mods have you done on the GX costing 6-7k? I was considering the GX and hated the center console prior to 2022 and also cargo space with 2 row down is 90sqst for 4R vs 64.7 for GX plus the 4R with slide down rear window my dog loves.@@Paranormal_Code
@@pall5114 Definitely can’t go wrong with either, I just think once you are modded the GX has pretty clear advantages is all. I spent about 3k on wheels and tires setup, 2500-3000 on my Ironman lift+install, then spent probably 500-1000 on misc stuff such as a ton of trimming, two BMC. I’m running basically a 35” tire.
that rear Trunk window is the best idea on any car ever .. I owned 2 4 runners and let me tell you I wish Toyota did that on all their suvs and I wish all American cars took that idea and use it too
GX460 is the only pick for me. Purchased a used 2021. Has better head room and very comfortable for taller people. I disagree - the 4 runner does not look better. It might be wise to buy the GX460 now before that V8-1UR-FR engine is discontinued in 2024/2025? I also have a V8 HEMI charger. Love my V8’s.
So the GX doesn't have the 4Runner's terrible seating position with no headroom?
I perfur the Lexus GX460 SUV for me Ben.
GX460 for sure. I’m renting a 4Runner SR5 on a trip right now and while I’ve always admired the 4Runner I’m really disappointed with it. The infotainment sucks, no automatic climate control, no 3 blink lane change blinkers, no automatic headlights, crappy incandescent headlights, bad gas mileage 16mpg avg, engine is loud and not very powerful, five speed transmission is lack luster, etc. It rides nice and steers well. The worst thing is it only has 879lbs of payload which is pathetic. Basically, you can only carry four adults and a case of beer and you’re exceeding what the vehicle is rated for. Sure, it’s reliable but ni way would I pay $50K for it when for the same money you could get the GX460. Plus, I already have a F350 Tremor and a 1980 FJ40 to cover my offroad needs. The wife would look good in the GX.
I didn't know the 4R has an internal payload of 879 lbs? what is the GX payload? I see many on YT overlanding their 4R with gear etc which probably exceeds 879 lbs and beating the hell out it.
How did your trd pro get a moonroof? I thought it was not an option
I just wish they’d put the V8 in the 4Runner… or another more powerful engine. The 4Runner is great, except terrible at power and fuel economy.
The GX's V8 requires premium fuel right? And the 4Runner's V6 only requires regular fuel?
93 octane is exactly $1.00 more than 87 Octane now.
If you are making a comparison video, I think this needs to be discussed.
Where do you have 93 octane? Here in California, we have 87/89/91, and 91 is about $0.40 more than 87.
@@delenius1 Kentucky here. 7 years ago or thereabouts, 93 octane was about $0.60 more than 87 octane. About two years ago if memory serves it changed to $0.70 more than 87 octane. And about 2-3 months ago it suddenly changed to exactly $1.00 more than 87 octane.
I mean, I still really like my turbo charged Subarus don't get me wrong (got 2 totally different ones)... something about a manual, 300hp, awd, smaller car these days...but a whole dollar more per gallon, when you're already getting less than 20mpg... it's a tough pill to swallow...just out of principle alone.
I just think it should have been mentioned in this or any video these days for a vehicle that requires premium fuel.
I think if your getting the Lexus gas is the least of your worries.
@@powkchopa90 GX460 isn’t much more than a 4Runner.
I live in a lower middle-class neighborhood so th GX would be giving too much papaya. GX front end looks silly but rear looks awesome. Much more luxurious than the 4runner. Both dinosaurs are awesome.
Comment for the best vid title of 2023. Needed a good laugh, thanks!
Can anybody please tell me if the KDSS on GX460 is better than the fox on 4runner?
Any info details about engine belt drive transmission suspension or anything in between like under the hood underneath chasis et al?
I saw a video on a channel called "car care nut" recently. He is a Toyota mechanic and in the video, he pulled out an original timing belt out of an older 4.6 V8 (same as the GX) with over 200,000 miles and although worn a little, it was still in great shape.
I would buy the 2023 Toyota 4Runner TRD Off-Road Premium trim. I think it has the best value for money.
Just for the looks and practicality I would go with the 4runner any day especially if you are not off roading every day SR5 premium would be better/cheaper option.
TRD PRO all day. 40 years from now, TRD PRO all day. Cheers
Great video Ben. I went down this decision path this month and ended up with the GX460 (the exact same spec as what you are testing). Dealer mark ups be a west coast thing as around here you can get a 4Runner pro for sticker now. It was actually harder to find a TRD OR non-premium or a black line, especially green, GX460 than a pro. Because it was green I got the GX but when I mentioned to a friend I was looking at a 4Runner he asked what sorority I was pledging …. That and my friend who is currently a sorority girl driving a blue SR5 4runner made me think twice. :-) I suppose the pro and TRD OR have more masculine appeal and I am sure many soccer moms drive a GX.
Other than the color, the main advantages to the GX I found were the engine/trans which is just much better and no less reliable. Often over looked is that the T-case with the torsen center diff (lockable) is much nicer handling especially in snow (the same T-case is on the limited 4Runner). Being in 2wd is actually a downside. Infotainment is better. Ventilated seats are nice too. Most noticeable as you state is the “tank” feel of the GX. GX is also quieter.
I was also looking for a classic silver (to match the silver trim) TRD OR non-premium 4Runner. If you skip the premium audio, running boards, and KDSS is $20k difference. Locker would have been nice and I like cloth seats, don’t need a third row etc. but if I am off-roading I am taking the Taco or one of the five land rovers I have.
PS You got the math wrong on the weights. The GX is 5126lbs and the 4runner pro is 4750lbs. That is from the respective websites. Net of the third row, GX is only ~250lbs heavier.
great points
Sell those 5 land rovers and get a land cruiser 200 series 🤣
A 200 series TLC or LX570 was on my longer list, but I prefer the smaller form factor of the GX and rather buy new. Plus Apple CarPlay for Waze is key. All my land rovers are old so it’s a different genre.
@@ptstouring49 💕💕👍🏻
I've owned both and they are probably the most reliable vehicles on the planet but the GX is better. It has more power, is heavier and still gets better gas mileage, more comfortable, and is always in 4WD. Those things should say something to you...the 4.0 V6 is great but it will hunt for gears and can't stay in 5th on the highway because it lacks that extra bit of power so the MPGs suffer. The GX has enough power to keep it in 6th when going down the highway so there isn't any gear hunting despite always being in 4WD. Lastly, the GX feels like a baby Land Cruiser because it is one. It is the Land Cruiser Prado. The 4Runner, although on the same "platform", is a lighter, more watered down version. You said it yourself, the GX feels like a tank. Go overseas and drive a Prado, it is the same as a GX. The 4Runner is like the little brother. Yeah, its scrapy and extremely capable but it isn't a GX/Prado.
you would take the 4runner over the GX 460? SMH
4Runner all day. GX is a tank but it looks like an old man mobile. ;runner aged a lot better
I actually really like the GX. My only issue with it is the fuel economy. The LX 600 which is a behemoth gets much better gas mileage. Makes no sense.
Man it is v8。
GX for days.
As much as i love the T4R looks but i still traded my 19 F150 raptor for 2020 GX460 a month ago🥲
Ideally I'd like to have the GX, but with the 4Runner 4WD system.
GX for me because of V8, full-time 4WD and KDSS. But I would choose 4runner if it has manual :)
90% comments prefer GX460! If you can afford it, this is a choice! But as soon as new 2024 model hits the market with new V6 biturbo and 8 speed transmission, you will be able to buy this slightly used current model way cheaper as a lot of them will come to trade in.
I'd take this V8 over V6 twin turbo all day long. Specially the Toyota! My 06 GX470 drive smoother than a V6 twin turbo Ecoboost raptor.
4Runner for me.
I am waiting for the redesign 4Runner
I’ve owned a 2019 4runner TRD off-road and a GX460 and the GX 460 is definitely the superior car objectively. It’s faster, smoother, more comfortable and imo better Offroad in easy trails. With that the 4runner has the better looking front end and more truck like ride. The 4runner would’ve benefitted from the 4.6L v8 of the GX470. I love both cars but if I had to pick one the GX460 would be the better choice for everyday and road trip days.
I wanted a 4 runner bad, but I do not pay markups and bs fees. You can buy a gx460 for LESS than and 4 runner. The choice is easy.
THE GX CAN BE COMPARED WITH LIMITED 4Runner 👍
I just traded in my 2017 cement trd pro 4runner for the 23 black line GX. I loved the 4runner and put 149k on it in almost 6 years but the gx ride and feel is so much better. If you’re buying these vehicles as a car to drive and not an off road vehicle I think the gx wins. The 4r feels sluggish compared to the gx, imo the 4r shouldve been a v8.
Is the 23 blackline interior light gray or more of a medium gray?
@@tylerbrunson8689 medium grey, pictures online make it look way lighter than it is in reality.
Thanks!
How would you compare the seat comfort? I got a bad back and I’m assuming the Lexus would be more comfortable.
clean that 4Runner up
Love the 4Runner, but the V8 wins, methinks!
Where was it??? U live in a very beautiful town
The more expensive one wins because people who don’t even know you will think you’re rich and be your long lost buddy.
Lol
If a GX means you are rich, you need to find wealthier friends. ;-)
@@ptstouring49 WTF🤯 $70k isn’t fuckin filthy rich!??
Ha. In the immortal words of my ex, only if there is a one in front of it. ;-)

9:10 What's that mountain?
Having third row seats is a big deal for people with kids actually. Also there are probably 10 people on your street that drive 4Runners and you see those trucks on every traffic light, I find this super obnoxious. If you are ready to spend the same amount of money on a Toyota as you do on a Lexus you probably don’t know much about cars to begin with.
Honestly I like better the Lexus more refined.
I love the Lexus but I had to go with the 4runner, I got a TRD Off Road Premium over the Pro and I have zero regrets. Coming from back to back Tacoma's
Same. 2022 ORP, ordered at 49k. Exceptional value. Absolutely in love with this tank.
I’ve been in both and you are incorrect about the back seat dimensions. The GX backseat is roomier than the 4Runner and you get a lot more headroom and leg room. The GX has 40.4 inches headroom in the back seat and 34.1 legroom. The 4Runner has 38.6 headroom and 32.9 legroom.
I’m surprised neither had a rear windshield wiper.
They both have one. It’s tucked under the middle brake light.
I would wish the GX V8 to have at least 400 HP/Torque to move the extra weight. I think all the upcoming 4Runner needs is a updated interior, better safety rating, and an 8-speed auto/6-speed manual 😎
I think the 4Runner is perfect the way it is. Old school and unmatched reliability.
That's why we have the LX 570 0r LX600
10.7 mpg on the 4runner display? Wow, that's unbelievably poor.
Both are amazing offroad and will last you forever ❤️
The Toyota 4Runner is the better looking one, lexus is well.... Lexus.

Look at the 4runner .. gosh .... JC ...
That V8 from the GX460 is natural aspired and low compression ratio, low hp/liter. Premium fuel requirement just for marketing as a premium suv
4th gen V8 wins if specced comparible to these two. I wish they kept the V8 in the 4R.
Nope. Premium fuel is a requirement for optimum performance and engine efficiency.
@@ovid4 please provide facts, evidence supporting this. Please be aware that this same engine produced 310 hp and 327 lb-ft in the second gen Tundra using 87 Regular fuel.
@@JesusPerez-iv2ej The vehicle’s is assembled in Japan along with it’s engine. It’s tuned from the factory to operate to spec when using premium fuel. Dismissing the engineering is disingenuous and disrespectful. It can run on regular octane because it can adjust for it. Time will change it’s original specifications and probably affect it’s wear and performance.
I have both as well and I wish the GX had the window controls up top like the 4Runner. Got used to them and now in the Lexus I find the buttons hard to get to lol.
I take the Toyota four runner TRD
Why all the spam on comments now? Fake Ben name talking about winning something….sad
I report them as I see them
The gx weighs5200
I echo your exact conclusions. I think the GX is actually the better vehicle on paper and should be the clear winner with the V8......but I prefer the 4runner for some reason. I bet I can get a new GX around here for close to what my TRD Pro order is going to cost. Still can't explain why the 4runner holds it's value better. I get the less features to break but at these prices, I don't think an air spring replacement many miles/years down the road is a deal breaker.
The GX is a much better built vehicle than the TRD pro or any 4Runner. It’s just built different!. I mean it weighs 800 pounds more than the 4 runner. The reason the resale value is not the same as the 4Runner although it’s still is one of the best is the fact a lot of people don’t know about them and assume they cost way too much to even research. When I bought my 22 GX I had no idea that they cost $60k. I really though it was a lot more. Drove both and I promise you the GX will come out as the clear winner.
The idiots complaining about the 4.0L V6 is the reason that toyota would never bring the 70 series landcruiser or the prado or the hilux.
All those vehicles have the 4.0L V6 in overseas market.
This ridiculous American obsession with power to drive on mostly straight and flat roads.
No way the GX gets 18mpg if the 4ruñner is getting 17mpg.
The 4Runner rides like a boat. The GX460 is way more refined. Give it up 4runner fan boi 😅
I like the look of the GX a lot more than the 4Runner. Also much better vehicle.
That’s surprising
The 4runner will outlive the Gx because it's built on the identical components and weighs less due to less luxuries, the 4Runner is built on the same components as the v6 toyota Land Cruiser Prado. Their both 150 series stablemates
The Lexus front grill is hideous
No..down right ugly
Ben - have to say, take the 30 seconds to clean the garbage out of a vehicle before you shoot a video. Totally amateur and crass.
i think GX wins in everything.
Lol. The room in back seat is better. No data, just a goof giving his opinion. Lol.
Having driven both at length and owning neither. The GX rides way better. The 4runner feels cheap and cramped. Drives like a truck. The GX rides and drives incredibly better. The 4runner is for people who act like they go off road but don't. The GX is for people who want an over built luxury suv.
Guy might want to dump his wife for his 4runner. Just a useless silly review.
Yes give me one Lexus GX 460 and i don’t buy anything else
...Lexus is far superior
Why does any car manufacturer still put a NON functional hood scoop on ANY vehicle. They look so stupid to people that know they aren't real.
Seriously.
ZERO luxury on the 4 Runner @ nearly $60k. 👎
