    Just got my 23 GX Luxury Trim last month and I couldn’t be more happy!! Coming from Mercedes and BMW I purchased the GX specifically for reliability… (tired of having to replace everything after 60k miles on a 100k car) yet I’m shocked at how luxurious it rides and feels. I’m willing to forgo a few modern amenities and great gas mileage for this old school V8 tank. I plan to keep this as long as I live maybe pass it down to future grandkids!

    • @joshjamescars
      @joshjamescars  Před 7 měsíci +4

      @romeo7843 You have to understand how trucks drive. The GX is a body on frame truck and has a hydraulic power assisted steering. The vibration through the wheel doesn’t happen all the time, it’s usually on cold start on brand new vehicles that haven’t been broken in yet. As for the seat padding, I think any 10 year old car is going to feel more plush than a new one, unfortunately, but I personally have no complaints there.

      @@romeo7843I feel exactly same things on my 2019 GX. It’s not that smooth driving as I understand it’s body on frame and it’s more like a truck. It sounds loud when first start the engine.

      Yes the roar at startup is the sign that the beast has awoken…unibody SUVs drive smoother but this thing for a BOF SUV is incredible.

      I don’t think those people have listened to high quality audio through it because it doesn’t do a great job with Bluetooth streaming and radio, for example. But give it a good CD or high bit rate audio file off of a flash drive and it’s amazing.

    Just picked up one of these in Caviar and premium plus. Your reviews were spot on and really helped me make this decision with no surprises. Glad you’re doing them. The GX stands out as organic in a sea of turbos, and complicated tech to make it all work; it’s exactly what I wanted compared to what I had that was only 2 years old, and my first Lexus product. Had a great experience at the dealer buying it as well. December to remember is real. Cheers friend.

      Hello! Thank you and I’m so glad this was helpful to you! One tip, just something to think about, these are being heavily discounted in a lot of places across the country right now at $6-10K off MSRP so depending on how much a 3-4 year old one is going for, you might want to explore new too. Also, I’d highly recommend getting the 2020 or later as it’ll have the new headlights and safety tech. Pre 2020, neither the GX nor the 4Runner had ANY driver assist at all. Cheers!

    Hi Josh. Another great straight to the point video. I agree with several issues you point out. In regard to the Mark Levinson sound system a Lexus salesperson mentioned that it is a musician's sound system and it enables you to hear every instrument being played. And no I don't mind the cd player. What is the big deal, different strokes for different folks. The barn door I don't mind at all. Having a large dog I thought I could put her in the back and open that back window. Well that didn't go well. We used to have a Mitsubishi Montero SR that had one we really loved that vehicle, but as time went on with the costly repairs we donated it. There are several vehicles with the barn door, Jeep Wrangler, the Range Rover Defender and the G Wagon, they don't get called a dinosaur like the GX. I live in the northeast area and if we get a snowstorm the GX will get me through it. I still feel that the GX 460 was slighted in some of the luxury features that should have been an option without purchasing the luxury model. Also, I find for me there is a blind spot on the driver's side. The safety system for lane change assist doesn't kick in until what 30-35 mph so if someone is close to the driver's side rear they are not very visible for me. So I may have to use the small mirrors for a better view. Again, thanks for the honest review.

      Hello! Thank you so much and for always coming back to watch and comment! Yeah, driving with the rear hatch open isn’t recommended unless you absolutely have to be carrying something around but that puts a lot of stress on the hinges and the struts (plus your third high mounted brake light isn’t visible if the hatch is open which could get you a ticket). And yes, you’re right! The lane departure and adaptive cruise only work above 32. Old technology. ;) Cheers and thanks again!

      Hello! Thank you so much and thanks for watching! I also work in technology and much prefer hard buttons and the old school, analog things that are in the outgoing GX… I think people who work in tech building it know how fragile it can be and how easily things can go wrong. Or that’s the case for me, anyhow! Give me physical buttons and analog dials in the instrument cluster any day.

I'm amazed how detailed your review is and how knowledgeable you are what customers love and expect from Lexus. You've addressed all the important details to the point. Thanks again. I plan to get exact same color combination with captain chairs and Mark Levinson sound system. I was thinking about luxury version but thanks to you I realized I wouldn't be happy with it. I don't remember a review like this about GX. there's nothing like real owner perspective. Lexus should listen to this and keep making cars to win our hearts like they did in the past.

      @joshjamescars  Před 6 měsíci +2

      Thank you so much for the super kind words! Now is most definitely the time, and many dealers are doing some fantastic discounts to get rid of them so you should be able to get a deal too. The only thing I’d advise you think about is, if you don’t think you’ll have the third row seat up most of the time (and you have zero cargo space when you do), I’d go for the bench seat as the captains chairs with the third row folded gives you a big gaping hole through to the cargo area that stuff can pass through and isn’t very pretty to look at (in my opinion). And yes, I wish Lexus would go back to what they used to be, but the changes have only just begun as Lexus has stated they’ll be a pure EV maker by 2030.

    You have literally given the most logical and well-thought out reason for the trackpad I’ve ever heard and it kind of blew my mind. Since it’s crafted in Japan I think the thought of the average height of the driver was considered and I don’t hate it as much. I used to hate it in my RCF but now looking back it’s not made for me and makes the features more accessible for most. Great job of thinking on your own and having a unique perspective on this I didn’t consider 💪🏼

      @roytheboy259 SAME HERE. I have a whole video coming out on Thursday about my take on the GX550. As for your search, as you can probably tell I love the GX460 but you should really consider it as a two row, 5-seater with an extra two emergency seats to use in a pinch. But they’re not nearly as comfortable or easy to use on a regular basis as the ones in a Grand Highlander or Lexus TX. And you’ll have zero cargo space behind them too which is kind of annoying.

      @@joshjamescars The GX is a huge upgrade from my 2019 4Runner. It is FAR more refined in a very big way. It is much quieter, much smoother, the interior materials are far more pleasing, the headlights are twice as bright. I’ve read many who have written that the GX is just a fancy 4Runner. That is completely false. It is far superior in every category other than three things:
      1) Can’t roll down rear window
      3) Rear cargo floor raised due to third row seat which reduces cargo volume capacity.
      3) Requires premium fuel.
      In all other metrics the GX is a totally superior experience.

    I like to get the last generation of GX 460 due to extreme reliability and refinement, my hold back was the fuel efficiency. This is hard to bite especially when I do the math of fuel cost compared to the newer TX and RX hybrids.

    • @joshjamescars
      @joshjamescars  Před 7 měsíci +4

      I totally understand that but it’s worth keeping in mind that the most fuel efficient versions of the TX and RX are going to have a much less pleasant drive (and be slower) because of the smaller, more efficient engines so it’s definitely a trade off.

    I believe the weight of the V8 contributes to the "vault like feel". So with a lighter twin turbo V6, will that play a part in ruining that feel??? We' shall see.

    • @joshjamescars
      @joshjamescars  Před 7 měsíci +1

      Hello! And thank you as always for watching and commenting! I’ve never thought about the weight of the V8 being part of the reason for that, but it would totally make sense! Thinking maybe that’s also partly why the new 4-cylinders in the RX also feel so lightweight as opposed to the good old V6 which also had that vault-like feeling to it. And HA! Same at the reversing comment!!!

    Hello Josh, enjoy your videos! I also have a 23 Premium GX and noticed the car doesn't track straight on the road. The steering wheel is always at an angle when going straight. I thought it to be an alignment issue so I took it to the dealer. The dealer stated alignment is fine. This was also an issue when I had a 2015 GX. Dealer at that time said the same thing.
    Another issue I noted is the steering wheel vibrates at 60 to 65 mph. Below or above those speeds, no issues. I wonder if the wheels need balancing? Have you run into similar issues?
    thx
    Kris

    • @joshjamescars
      @joshjamescars  Před 7 měsíci

      Hi Kris! Someone else mentioned the steering wheel angle and frankly I have never ever noticed that and it doesn’t bother me at all, as long as I can control the direction of the car, im good LOL. As for the wheel shake, the car will do that in certain conditions because it’s an old school body on frame truck with hydraulic rack and pinion steering so the wheel is going to directly communicate everything the wheels are doing. I find mine will do it a bit first thing in the morning if the tires are cold and I’m going over rough pavement but not beyond that. If it consistently does it every single time you’re in the 60-65 range, though, I’d definitely have the dealer look at it. Mine doesn’t do that. That’s like exactly highway speeds and it would drive me insane! Hope this helps!

    Great review. Really hit home. I bought my wife the 23 GX in nightfall mica. She is less that happy with the black rims. I so love the wheels on yours. You were lucky indeed. Wondering how the silver lexus F sport wheels would go with the Nightfall mica. You seem to have an appreciation of the color combination. Any rim recommendations on better solver rims that might be availablr from the dealer?

    • @joshjamescars
      @joshjamescars  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Hello! Thank you! It’s funny actually, when I bought mine I thought it was a factory error that we had these wheels because the builder online defaults all premium and premium plus models with the black wheels (which I’m with your wife on, I do not like them one bit and was THRILLED that this one that we’d ordered didn’t have it). I mentioned it in the first video I did on the car, linked below lol. But after some investigation it turns out the black wheels are a no-cost option on the premium & premium plus but the silver is still the default, so it wasn’t a mistake, the dealer just didn’t spec the black wheels with mine.
      As for the F-Sport wheels, they’re not silver but rather a mid-dark gray so they may still be darker than you might like. What I would do is just order four of the stock silver wheels like what I have if you love them. Assuming you have the black 18” wheels, the tires will fit right onto them so you won’t have to buy new tires as well (you would on any other wheel). I personally don’t care for the look of aftermarket wheels especially on luxury vehicles and would stick to OEM Lexus.
      And finally, here’s the video where I first bought the car and made a stink about the wheels LOL: czcams.com/video/o7ZBzU6nUNs/video.htmlsi=duHUN5WgGUZx8gbK

    Traded in my modern-day 2023 turbocharged SUV for a used 2021 Lexus GX460 Luxury Package (with just 21,700 km) in October 2023. You see, for many months I’ve been agonizing whether I should get the 5th gen Toyota 4Runner or a Toyota/Lexus hybrid SUV as the last vehicle of my lifetime. I’m 68. Then I hesitantly decided to take the hybrid route and ordered the 2024 Lexus NX 350h (3 to 6 months waiting time here in Metro Vancouver). On a follow up session at the Lexus dealership regarding the NX 350h, a friend of mine saw a dinosaur in the most obscure rear corner of the showroom: the 2021 Lexus GX 460. The rest is history.
    Now I have the best of both worlds: Lexus Luxury + Toyota 4Runner Off-Road Prowess = Total Reliability Package. Just saying.😊

      Hello! You are most welcome and thank you for watching! You actually got better than 4Runner off-road prowess, you got Land Cruiser off-road prowess! Both are great but the GX as I’m sure you know is a more luxurious Land Cruiser and I absolutely love it for that reason. As for the NX350h, I can totally understand why you’d want that in Vancouver, I hear you have the highest gas prices in North America! But I think you made the right decision with the GX. You can always get a cheap hybrid like we did with the Prius or a cheap Tesla lease or something on the side if you really feel the need to cut the petrol bill down. But in the meanwhile, enjoy your GX and hold onto that forever!

    I’m glad you presented this amazing review. Everything you said applied to my experience. The only reason I moved back to my 22 RX is because we take care of my mom and she couldn’t climb up in it anymore. I do miss it. You guys definitely made the correct choice. You are better off with Nuluxe for long term ownership. In my opinion leather needs more care over time. I also am used to the trackpad. It’s faster for me and less distracting as it is second nature to me. The new GX will be way overpriced and not on par with the luxury finishes.

      Thank you! As for the 22 RX, that’s a real gem too and honestly much nicer to drive on a daily basis, plus like you say, so much easier to get into and out of. And I completely agree with the NuLuxe. We’ve had semi aniline leather in a past car and it’s beautiful but it’s a headache to keep it looking good over the long term. • @joshjamescars
      @joshjamescars  Před 3 měsíci

      I think it depends on what you want to be able to do with the car. If it’s going to be mostly family duty, I’d probably point you in the direction of a Grand Highlander or TX. Way, way more practical and more efficient as well. The GX is also a truck-based SUV and that means your seats are so high up that loading and unloading car seats could be a real ordeal, especially if either of you is short like me.
      I’m also not a fan at all of the new RX so if I were you I would trade the RX for the GH or TX.
      You might also consider another 3-row crossover like the Infiniti QX60 which has a much better engine (Nissan’s excellent, proven 3.5L VQ-series V6 instead of the turbo 4s that Toyota has been doing) or Acura MDX (which has Honda’s excellent 3.5L V6).

    Hello Josh....I currently have a 14 Toyota 4runner Limited, and want to upgrade to something a little nicer. Looking at the GX460, or the Porsche Cayenne. Looking to get either a 2019/20, Both are around the same price point. Just curious....What are your thoughts opinions on those two?

    • @joshjamescars
      @joshjamescars  Před 7 měsíci

      Hello! Those are two hugely different vehicles and I think the biggest consideration is how long you want to keep it and much you want to pay over that time for maintenance. Take it from me, having owned euro luxury, Porsches are great but you’re looking at about $2K a year on average just for basic maintenance (servicing, tires, other standard wear items) and that’s without anything going wrong. And the CPO warranty only extends coverage 2 years beyond the new vehicle warranty so if you buy a 19/20 now, you’ll only be covered for another couple years (and buying CPO is a must). The Lexus on the other hand is a safer bet in terms of reliability and maintenance as you know with your 4Runner. The only thing with the Lexus is I would urge you to get a 2020+ to get the safety systems and the full LED headlights. Hope this helps!

    I'm a new GX owner 2017 to be precious which I love and also an LS 430 owner with all bells and whistles meaning I have all the options there are with an ultra luxury sedan. I have learnt my lesson and don't subscribe to the hype of "luxury" trim anymore. You pay going in and pay even more going out. Most of the stuff you pay for example Nakamichi sound system is crap not to mention the more moving parts you have the more problems you create (on stuff you hardly use). The Nakamichi subwoofer blows up within months not to mention the regular sound system that comes with the vehicle is just as good without the Nakamichi problems of rattling speakers. My new GX has the sport package and looks great, otherwise I don't need all the fluffy stuff that I don't need that will need fixing down the road. Right now my beloved LS 430 Ultra Luxury sedan sits down like a Citroen from the eighties. For one the air suspensions are not worth it. These are beautiful and reliable automobiles, but don't get sold on fluff you will never use for show. Be practical!

If I’m buying a luxury car it should have a good sound system.

    I don't mind the lower cladding on the new cars. It's a design choice, but probably more durable, unless you've put protective wrap on your car. YMMV (obviously). And... everyone knows that a split tailgate is the only way to go, lol. (having an (older) Land Cruiser, and a newer GX, prefer the split tailgate of the LC. Not sure about the lift gate, that might be my least favorite. Pop open the back at Buccees on the way to grandma's house, and everything likely to spill out. Happens with the GX too. My wife won't ever learn to pop the glass partition.

      @joshjamescars  Před 7 měsíci

      We did the vinyl wrap for exactly that reason so we’ve got the best of both worlds. I just hate that the black plastic because it fades so quickly here even after being treated for UV. As for the split tailgate, I think like the barn door it comes with its own downsides.

    Lost my 08 LX to the dealership when they didn’t add oil back into the engine after a service. Now I’m stuck in a Q7 - handles nicely, but waiting for GX550 to compare with the 460. Anyway, you can probably beat your prius time if you use the manual shift instead of relying on the engine to shift for you. I’ve test driven the 460 and got it to respond better when ramping up the rpms in manual. It’ll definitely move…those V8’s just need some guidance. Congrats on your beauty.

    • @joshjamescars
      @joshjamescars  Před 5 měsíci

      Oh no, so sorry to hear about your LX. What a huge loss. As for the 460 vs 550, you’re going to see a huge difference in the interior material quality. The new Lexus cars are cheap and flimsy inside compared to an older LX or the current GX460. Cost cutting and the need to save every pound possible in the car for fuel economy has really changed the way Toyotas feel. So, if that’s at all important to you, you might want to jump on a 460 now. I’m not sure if it’s still the case but last I heard GX550 production was delayed to mid year so the earliest we’ll see them at dealers is likely in the fall, by which time new 460s will probably be sold out, so do keep that in mind if buying a 460 new is of interest.
      As far as the GX being slow, manual mode won’t change the fact that by comparison to anything electrified, a naturally aspirated V8 just can’t ever be fast by comparison. And I’m not wanting it to be, it’s just something that someone shopping for any of the turbo or supercharged options in this class should be aware of.

    Hi Josh: i am one more of your "clients"! Yesterday I bought a GX460 2023 with premium plus sport package. It would be preposterous to claim that your video was the clincher but I can say it had great influence in buying the last old GX instead of waiting for the new one GX or for the new LC what was my original idea. You made a lot of great comments about the GX. One of them was the CD player that many reviewers made snide comments about. So yesterday I decided to go and sit in my new car and study the layout. But why not to have some music...I picked up my Luciano Pavarotti CD of his most famous arias and I put in the CD player. The surround sound of the Mark Levinson system it was mind blowing combined with the richness of the CD recording. Let me tell you: I coudn't read one more sentence since I was so enthralled in listening to the music. Just to support what you said: "On average, a CD is encoded at 1411 kbps while Apple Music only offers 256 kbps for their standard streaming option". That fact tells you the difference. Your comments were eye-opening for me. Thanks Josh!

    • @joshjamescars
      @joshjamescars  Před 5 měsíci

      Hello!! Congratulations on the new GX, I’m so happy my video played a part in your decision to buy a new GX! I think you absolutely made the right choice, and as for the LC, I don’t believe there will be another one, at least not a direct successor to the LC500 we have today. Lexus has already stated that they’re going to become an EV-only brand by the late 2020s so the next IS, LS, and LC will be all-electric vehicles. The only reason we have this new 2024 GX as a gas car is because it’s a lightly-Lexus-ified Land Cruiser 250 Prado. So all that to say hold onto your GX because we’ll never see anything like it again from Toyota or Lexus. As for the CD player, YES! I actually had initially recorded more on that for this video talking about bitrates and audio file fidelity but I cut it because I thought it might be boring and technical. But you’re spot on about CD audio file quality being multiple times better. That’s why artists who care about a good listening experience continue to put out CDs instead of leaving it to streaming services to release their music. Streaming audio is low quality by design to reduce the amount of data your phone is having to use to stream your audio (you can stream lossless on Apple Music but it warns you about dramatically increased data usage). So, congrats again on the car and thanks as always for watching!!!

      Hi Josh: It was an intersting trip for me to end up with a Lexus. I have had a high respect for Toyota and Lexus but they haven't been my cup of tea. My brands have been Audi/BMW for primary transportation and Jeeps for secondary/off-road. (No rock climbing for me but dirt road YES!) Since we are not getting younger (I retired almost 3 years ago) the Jeep Rubicon was getting a bit too much of a truck! I was looking for something tamer with a pretty good dose of luxury but still with off-road capability and super reliability since we don't like to frequently replace our secondary car.s This is the way we decided: Toyota/Lexus is the way to go. First I was looking at the upcoming Toyota Land Cruiser 2024 what I liked a lot. But almost alll reviewers talked about the GX also. I looked at the GX 550 2024 what I liked but if I wanted to go with in that direction the LC looked even better. This is the way I started gravitating more and more towards the GX 460. In resolving my doubts you with interesting view points about some of the oddities of the car and Driving Sports Ryan about the GX460 off-road capabilities nudged me over to make the decision. I am extremely pleased with the car except when I need to go to the fuel station but the super Toyota/Lexus V8 makes me forget all of my concerns. Thanks again for your very insightful comments. Thanks so much for a great review. I just pulled the trigger on 2023 GX460 based on great reviews like yours. One question I have for you? How do you take care of your car after you purchase one? Would you recommend the dealership service center or a regular mechanic? I read up on the pros and the cons of each, and I was wondering what your thoughts are. In particular, my local dealership service center charges ~$1000 for a 30K mile check-up. That’s real money just for a check-up for a few tune-up items and they would add other things as they find on top of it. Do you think it’s worth it? I purchased my GX and I plan on keeping for good 10-15 years, fyi. Thanks in advance for your insights on the issue!

    • @joshjamescars
      @joshjamescars  Před 7 měsíci +1

      Hello! I generally always take it to the dealer at least for as long as the warranty is in effect, and even after that I usually do just so they can’t say something was my fault. Also, you need to be aware that you’re purchasing a very expensive luxury car and even though it’s a Toyota, $1,000 at 30K is nothing. For most German cars I’d set aside $2,000 A YEAR for maintenance and work. And then considering a set of tires for the GX is also well over $1K, you’ll want to factor in enough for routine wear items as well.
      If you’re not handy (I wouldn’t consider myself to be handy either, for the record), I would take it to the dealer and pay for them to maintain it, at least until the warranty is up.
      The one thing you might want to consider doing is a good paint protection film application. I’ll link my video on it below. It’s pricey, but for me it’s a must do on cars I intend to keep for a while (like the GX). See that here: czcams.com/video/-RoYUcBC1ug/video.htmlsi=JxbfRxpfI-5qAlGU

      No can do and I think it was because of the middleman "Gulf States Toyota", which controls allocations to the dealerships in five states in and around Texas. As for Japanese Mercedes, I think that’s spot on although Mercedes is also starting to slide backward to the cheap interiors of the mid-2000s with their latest products. The EQ line especially has some of the cheapest feeling plastics. And specifically with the GX, I also don’t like that the sepia interior still has an ecru/light beige headliner because it looks mismatched and that means you have an ecru headliner, sepia seats, and black carpeting (they only make two headliner colors: ecru and black so Rioja red also gets a black headliner). But if that doesn’t bother you any you like the Sepia, go for it!

As for the V8, Toyota has confirmed that petrol V8s are dead (except oddly for the V8 diesel that the 70-series Land Cruiser gets in Australia). The Land Cruiser 300, for example, doesn’t get a V8 in any market, the top engine being the 3.4L twin turbo V6. Time will tell how well it holds up, I would honestly expect it to be reliable given that it’s from Toyota but for me it’s the ride and refinement from the V8 that’s going to be sorely missed.

      Hello! No apologies needed! This is why I love doing these videos! And as sad as I am to say, I think for the money and your needs, you might be better off with a top spec Grand Highlander. It’ll be about $59 or so fully loaded (versus $65K for a mid-trim GX) and you’ll have so much more space for all your family and gear. I also wouldn’t want to pack your poor doggo in the cargo area of the GX with all your stuff. Plus, the Grand Highlander runs on regular gas and will likely be more efficient than the GX. The thing about the GX is that it’s a great car but by modern standard it’s small because that’s what “midsize” was when it came out back in 2009 but over the last almost 15 years people’s needs and expectations from cars have changed and so now a Grand Highlander is what we consider “midsize”. And even with the turbo hybrid engine the Grand Highlander should still be really reliable and serve you well and be way, way, way more comfortable on long haul roadtrips.

      Hello! If you think you could do with the GX, I would actually buy one now and get it new while you can. I’ve heard dealers in many parts of the country are discounting them by $5-10K to get rid of them. I like the LX570 as well and it is the flagship, but it’s a substantially larger vehicle and handles as such. There’s also a lot more that tends to go wrong with LXs because most of them came standard with air suspension and such. For me, it’s more mass and volume than I want to deal with on the road and so for me, the GX is perfect.

      Scratches on the interior aren’t necessarily indicative of poor quality materials, they’re indicative of more delicate or fragile materials typically used in a luxury car versus more hardy and robust materials used in something like a 4Runner (the GX’s brother vehicle in the mainstream class). It’s definitely an interior you need to be very mindful of, especially if you have the semi-aniline leather which is designed to pick up every scratch and scuff because the idea of semi aniline leather is for it to patina over time.

    Hey Josh, I’m coming from a 2022 Trd pro 4 runner.
    I just picked up a 23 GX 460 in August for an overland build
    I love the car, but there are definitely things that I miss about the Toyota like the rolldown real window the more gadgets and gizmos like the standard multi terrain select all that stuff
    I love your videos, but I will say I haven’t fallen in love with my GX yet as I still have to take it out west after I modify it
    But there are certain things, for instance like in the center infotainment screen between the gauges. It doesn’t tell me what song I’m listening to.
    But the Toyota forerunner has the same exact screen, and it shows it to me
    Just small things like that really kind of annoy me in the Lexus!

    • @joshjamescars
      @joshjamescars  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Hello! So I actually totally understand you here. Personally I wouldn’t be in love with the GX as the base for an overland build either and thats why I emphasized in this video that both these trucks have a place in the market because I really do think you have to do too much to a GX to make it really work as an overlanding rig. To do it right, you’ll need to completely chop the front and the spindle grill doesn’t really make that possible to do nicely without spending a lot of money.
      It’s worth noting that while the Land Cruiser Prado and GX are very capable off road, the Land Cruiser Prado line has always been specifically designed for on-road use. Which is why markets around the world have always had both a “real” Land Cruiser (200 series, for example) and a Prado variant sold together and then there’s always a Fortuner or 4Runner below it as well. And why MTS and Crawl Control are only available on the Luxury grade GX.
      Also I didn’t realize that you couldn’t display media on the center screen and I had to go into mine to confirm! That’s so odd. I always use that screen for the digital speedo and use the split screen for persistent media display on the center screen.

      Yes, there are some silly little things that are not included in the GX And I get a few little glitches with Apple CarPlay sometimes like when I first connect I can’t adjust the volume so I have to turn off the audio and turn it on and then I can adjust the volume.
      And then if I put a CD in while I have Apple CarPlay, sometimes it doesn’t read the CD because I’m playing audio from phone.

It's a reliable family hauler, luxury cruiser, moderate off roader, and a light camper/boat tower (3500-4000lbs). Hello! I do love my ecru, but it can definitely take on color from jeans and such and you do need to be more careful with it but the same is actually true of sepia or Rioja red. You’ll still see dye transfer from clothes on sepia and Rioja red. The only color you don’t have to look after at all is black. Also, if keeping your seats nice is important, NuLuxe is FAR much more resilient than the semi-aniline leather which will stain, stretch, and patina over time which is the whole point of semi-aniline leather since it’s porous, un-treated leather and just like our skin, ages over time. All that said, I’m generally OCD about keeping my car pristine on the inside and outside so for me having the ecru isn’t a problem but it’s definitely not for everyone.

    Excellent review. I have both the luxury package leather and the leatherette product. As my leather is on a 10 yo vehicle, it did not age very well, having areas wher the leather starts to fold and wrinkle versus the surfaces that are leatherette which look brand new. The Lexus leatherette is an amazing product, has much more structural integrity than leather, yet comparable to leather in feel. I would not say the leather on the 10 yo vehicle is bad, it is excellent. Also, some folks like the look of more worn and less structured leather, I am not one.

      Hello! Thank you and yes! I agree with everything here. Fun fact, with NuLuxe (and Toyota’s SofTex), the seating material is actually bonded to the foam padding in the seat, where the leather is more like a slip cover on a sofa where it’s just wrapped around the cushioning and so you’re spot on that the NuLuxe has better structural integrity! And will, like you say, look brand new even 10 years on. And that’s why I was okay with giving up the semi-aniline leather in this car. We had a new-gen XC90 with the beautiful semi-aniline leather and even after just 3 years, like you say, it stretched and sagged and wrinkled which is what it’s supposed to do, but I too don’t care for that look. Have a 2023. Dislikes: 1) as you pointed out, much old school lighting. I swapped out ALL old school for LEDs…inside and out…(the running board amber lights were embarrassingly weak, btw). 2) No matter what, the auto-high beams kick in very quick, even when sometimes they shouldn’t. 3) yes, gas mileage. 4) not quick off the line. 5) paint is silky smooth, and yet chips very easily. I travel a lot, and even having it ceramic coated, I get a ton of chips. Down to the metal. 6) stock 18” tires were trash…loud, unruly…immediately swapped for Michelins. Likes you didn’t mention: 1) the manual shift mode. I use this all of the time. When you get up to speed, throw it to the left, immediately drops to 4th gear, then you shift up to 5th and 6th, and back over to the right when ready. Easy peasy, makes the engine much more responsive, and great for passing and maneuvering. 2). The power hatch release on the barn door. Makes it so easy to access, even if no room to open the whole door. 3) the base sound system is more than adequate, and better as the volume goes up, especially for satellite and Hd radio. 4) Visibility is outstanding. 5) seats for a big guy, are very comfortable. 6) the price for my brand new 2023 Premium with discount, was only $57k….try that with virtually any other luxury (or even domestic) SUV in this category.

      Hello! Thanks for leaving this comment, I love hearing about others’ experience. Two things that stood out to me are 1. Your tires! What came stock on them? Mine (and most that I’ve seen in other videos) came with terrific Michelin Latitudes. Amazing ride. I’d have been annoyed if I had to pay to swap out tires on a brand new vehicle. As for the paint, yes, Toyota’s paint is notoriously “soft” and you have to be VERY careful with buffing it. And regarding the ceramic coating, I’m not sure if you know but it doesn’t actually protect your paint from chips it’s just to seal the paint which prevents dirt and grime from building up on the paint making it easier to wash, but it doesn’t offer any impact protection. We did a full paint protection film application on GX and I love it because it’s like bulletproof armor for road debris. Video on that linked at the end of the comment, though you’d need to have the ceramic coating removed before having PPF applied if you wanted to do it. Great review. I own a 2020 GX 460 and it is the best vehicle that I have ever owned. Concerning your comment on the mpg, this is the animal people focus on the most when in reality it should be the number you focus on the least. Why?
    The GX 460 is a 5,200 lb vehicle empty. Fully loaded you could be well over 6,200 lbs, and the the amount of energy necessary to move that amount of weight is staggering hence the poor gas mileage. With that said, if you are willing to buy a $65-$75,000 SUV then mpg should not be something you worry about.
    You may pay a little more at the pump, or you could be like my moron brother who bought a Ford Expedition Ecoboost and just had the turbos go out at 89,500-ish miles and it cost him $7,000 to fix and replace. His gas mileage was 1-2 mpg better city and highway.
    You can't have both reliability and great gas mileage you can only have one or the other, and I will take reliability every time. It cost less both in time and money in the long run.

    The reason why they could not get assist technology is because steering is hydraulic instead of electronic. Which for me makes it a big negative, because the steering play is comical, 1+ inch means nothing to the GX. So, that is the big negative, in this vehicle I don’t get the engagement of a hydraulic steering feedback, but get all the negatives that come with it. The second dislike is the relatively short wheelbase, great for off-roading, but not so great for city with roads that have recesses that are slightly longer than wheelbase distance, the GX rocks back and forth in a very unrefined manner, while vehicles like the Tundra, Sequoia and even Sienna do a much better job. The interior is amazing, makes it easy to forget the others.

    • @joshjamescars
      @joshjamescars  Před 7 měsíci

      Yes to your point about the steering assist missing due to the hydraulic power assisted steering, though other brands have gotten around that by using yaw braking on an opposing wheel to gently tug the car back into the lane. That has other mild downsides (uneven tire and brake wear) but still. As for the rocking back and forth, I don’t ever experience that in my GX, as you say in a previous comment that you have the luxury, I’m assuming you have the adaptive variable suspension, you may want to have Lexus look at the suspension next time you take it in for service. The adaptive damper system can have issues that can lead to the car not driving the way it can. The infamous “GX lean” is also far more common on vehicles with the air suspension and adaptive dampers as well. Hopefully they can remedy that for you because that would really annoy me if mine did that!

      @@joshjamescars LOL, my other Lexus is the beautiful 2013 GS, subjectively one of the most gorgeous cars ever made, generous curves that all work together to be more eye candy and refined than screaming styled sports cars. In Texas, probably hard to find a road place where you can encounter an abrupt decline to a flat area that is just a touch longer then wheelbase and then an incline, but the suspension of my Premium GX that I have does not do great specifically with that road feature, which I often encounter in hilly areas. Maybe in Austin, and you may be able to experience it. It has a minor whiplash like affect when driving as the car front dips forward and starts recuperating to neutral and the second abrupt incline pushes the recovery to be accentuated rocking the vehicle backwards more than any single decline/incline would have performed, kinda adding them together in magnitude. In the rest of the Texas cities, is probably difficult to find it that condition. Thanks for mentioning the GX lean, no worries there, I am a new owner. I happen to like the steering, but for the feedback that I get, I would much have rather have the 'boring feedback' electronic steering that comes with lane assist. For a 23 Toyota or Lexus, it is a small opportunity cost not having the assist, small compromise for getting a true all environment vehicle, city, suburbia or nature.

But again, I don’t have any of the adaptive dampers and air suspension which can cause a lot of what you’re feeling. In my 4Runner TRD Pro I did get a lot more of that because it had the Fox off-road suspension which, like the adaptive suspension in the GX, has way more give and play than the non-adaptive suspension which is why I like it.

      That’s not exactly right, the eco program kicks in when the vehicle isn’t under load and manual mode is just a top gear lockout, it doesn’t remap the throttle at all. The fastest it’ll ever do 0-60 is about 7.5 seconds and our Rav4 Prime is 2 seconds faster to 60 than the GX and gets through the quarter mile at over 100mph. Yes but we actually sold the 4Runner a month or so ago since ir was semi redundant and actually got more ($50K) than we paid for it new in 2019 ($46K). Took $30K of that and bought the Prius. As for the 2022 RX, I have different dislikes about it. Namely, it doesn’t have the same body on frame ride, no digital speedometer, the 8-speed auto is always in the wrong gear (seeks top gear ALL THE TIME so then you’re left flat footed when you want power), and I would have had to buy one used and I always prefer to buy new. Plus, like you said it doesn’t have the amazing V8. Otherwise it’s a great alternative for someone who wants a car-based crossover.

      Haha you didn’t miss anything in this video, I think I mentioned it at the very end of the first Prius video. But yes! This kind of truck-based SUV is a must for me and I love the GX so much that I didn’t feel like I needed to hold onto the 4Runner also.

    But I see why your dislike towards new GX.

    • @joshjamescars
      @joshjamescars  Před 7 měsíci

      I like what’s coming out on the Toyota side a lot! But it’s odd to me because they seem to be getting objectively better cars than Lexus. Like my new Prius and the Crown Estate that’s coming, for example, that we may buy if the pricing is right. And getting all the engines first. Even the Land Cruiser, I think it’s overpriced but I’d buy it sooner than I’d buy the new GX.

      True I see where you coming from@@joshjamescars , but in true Toyota fashion, they will strip some of the "premium" and put on Lexus or maybe they will stop producing certain Lexus models and put on Toyota products like Crown(it's a familiar car in Japan market).

      It all depends on your driving, if it’s mostly (like 90%) highway you could do 19-20 on average or if your driving is mixed like mine it’s more like 14-16. Then multiply whatever that is by 23 gallons (fuel tank capacity) and you’ll get your hypothetical range.

    Got 17 GX premium sport and a tesla MYP. They weigh about the same but obviously very different cars. That last of the vault like lexus is forever gone starting in 2024. I do love both cars for their own characteristics. But I know the GX will out last the tesla

    • @joshjamescars
      @joshjamescars  Před 7 měsíci +1

      Yes! Completely agreed, and both great at different things. If I had to bet money, I’d bet that the GX will outlast our Prius and Rav Prime too.

    I also do not like the appearance of the 2024 Lexus GX- it is too much like a Toyota 4Runner, which I would purchase in lieu of the new Lexus GX and for half the cost. Let's be realistic here, if you had the option to buy an overland -type vehicle to choose and it was the 2024 GX; 2024/2025 Toyota Land Cruiser; or the 2024 4Runner, which model would you choose? Probably the Land Cruiser followed by the 4Runner, not the $60-$80K Lexus GX! TGHis is called 'cannibalization' in the auto trade and those who buy Lexus want luxury, luxury, luxury over a cross-country adventure platform. The most cross-country and obstacle environment a Lexus GX user will most likely confront is driving over a curb, riding in snow/ice, or riding over a lawn.

    I think this thing is going to hold fantastic value (they already do). But once people convert to EV and the v8 becomes extinct, there will still be plenty of car people who will want to collect these. It'll be like a classy mechanical watch. I bet 10 years from now, this thing will still sell for 50k+ with 100k miles on it.

    • @joshjamescars
      @joshjamescars  Před 6 měsíci

      I completely agree! And 100% agreed on the watch reference too. There’s a reason Rolexes are in such high demand even though one can get an Apple Watch which is arguably more useful and better at most things.

      @@joshjamescars people would be surprised how smooth most suvs and trucks ride. New or old. I had a 74 Chevrolet C10 pickup long bed, and you could take it on a long road trip and it feel just fine. It only got about 12 miles per gallon on the hwy though. Lol

    Exactly, unless it has a naturally aspirated engine and three electric motors. Otherwise don't buy, to many issues that have not been discovered yet. Why be the guinea pig for a new model, if you need a GX buy the 2023 ASAP.

    The gas cost is reliability tax. GX/LX/Land Cruiser will still be on the road 20-30 years for now with minimal maintenance. It is designed to survived in 3rd world countries. it is the vehicle of choice of UN and terrorists. Can we say the same about any other brand?
