I dunno if they were petrol or diesel variants but a gov forestry company in Estonia bought a fleet of 2014 ish (don't remember exact year) Hiluxes and a large chunk of them ended up grenading their engines. It really doesn't matter what brand you're buying there's just so many variables in cars and they all have their own issues. You can find M52 BMW's with 300k+ mi with flawless nikasil cylinders that are still within factory spec for a brand new engine and you can find ones that have no life left in them without replacement liners after less than 100k. The issue isn't that they're unreliable (they're tanks, they're more reliable than a lot of Honda's and Toyota's I've seen) but sulfur contaminated fuel will chemically rip the coating off and destroy the cylinders (also why the US never got Alu block M52's, you didn't have many regulations against sulfur in fuel). Something as innocuous as fuel can be the defining factor in whether you have a great or terrible experience with a car.

Your gut on the key issue was spot on. Friend of mine had a Mercedes C class and, where he lived, it was always parked in a carport. Someone cased the area, saw the car as the mark, took down the vin from the front windshield and then went to a Mercedes dealer where a friend of theirs worked. A couple hundred bucks and a few weeks later this guy has his own key to my friend’s car. Guy shows up late one night and just gets in the car and drives it away while everyone else is sleeping.
My friend later found the car by searching the vin on the web. It was for sale at a mom and pop retailer outside of his town. Skip to the end, he got it back.
There are a lot of people out here that we can trust. There are also many that we can’t. You went with your gut and that was the right call. I’ve seen how it works and it’s not fun.

Cars are complex, so however good their QC must be, sometimes something slips through the cracks. The ultimate test is that it doesn’t happen often and the company stands behind you. The bottom line is the customer must get what he just paid $60K+ for. In the case of Toyota, it must be very much worth the dealer’s effort, even if it costs them sometimes, to make sure that every customer gets what they paid for.

I’m really impressed with your Lexus dealers. I had bought a brand new 2017 LS460 and at like 4,000 miles it was making a horrible whistle while on the freeway. I went to 4 dealers, had a whole bunch of their lead techs and a DSPM from Lexus/Toyota corporate come out with NO SOLUTION they tore interior panels apart and did all sorts of things. My car had all sorts of creaks and rattles after that and none of it fixed the problem. Finally after about a year of living with it a service tech found out it was the front brakes, they put new pads and rotors on it and the noise went away. This was after other dealers basically ruined the interior of my car. I will never forgive Lexus for that treatment. During all of that I even wrote and mailed a letter to Akio Toyoda asking for a buyback of the car. It was a HORRIBLE whistle going down the highway, it was piercing and this was on their LS. After 21 years it was not logical to do the work and the New England winters had taken their toll anyways. We replaced it with an 07 LX for my brother to take to school because of how well the Land Cruiser treated us. Unfortunately we've had quality issues with both our 20' GX 460 and 22' IS 500. Our GX had a terrible balance/alignment issue which took 2-3 attempts to resolve. Sadly one of our IS500s BBS wheels was damaged by the dealer's carwash, it took months of attempting to refinish the wheel to match the factory set, only to let us know they didn't have the exact Enkei paint formula due to some trade secrets. Only then did they offer to replace the wheel with a new set (which was not balanced properly).

One time I had the car in for a recall on the door lock actuators (even though my car wasn’t presenting a problem). When I went to pickup the car they were all apologies because they only had 3 of the four actuators when they went to change them. They gave me a $100 gift card as compensation for having to bring the car back for the fourth actuator.

I recently weighed purchasing a brand new GX vs a certified pre-owned. I ended up going CPO, maybe that was the right choice 🤣. But really, sad to hear the issues you've had but its great your dealer made things as right as possible. My GX has so far been one of my favorite vehicles out of many.

I compared a CPO GX 460 with 10k miles vs a new GX 460. I bought the new GX, the Lexus, with a 2.49% finance rate, plus the Lexus sales manager discounted $9k from MSRP, making it $500 cheaper than the CPO with a 2.49% finance rate. The CPO GX 460 was a used vehicle and would have cost me $500 more plus a 5.99% finance rate.

I bought a new 2023 GX460 this past October. Immediately started to notice it was hard to get the interior temperature to a comfortable setting. Long story short - With the AC on the passenger vents are 10 degrees warmer than the driver's vents (sync'd) and the floor vents are hot. I've been to two dealerships about this. So far every GX tested does this except one that reversed the temps from front facing vents. It's been documented that with the air at 65F (example), AC on, front facing vents are off by 10 degrees and the floor vents are 100F+.
The dealers refuse to open a TAS case with Toyota/Lexus because "It is normal" since they "all" do it. They told me to call Lexus about it. I did and a case manager ("Lexus Advocate") was assigned. They essentially told me they spoke with the original dealer and nothing was found - "it's normal."
The dealers kept telling me to go to Toyota/Lexus and Toyota/Lexus kept telling me to talk to the dealers.
    Essentially - pound sand.
PS. Also see in your video it looks like you are constantly holding the wheel to the left. I had this problem off the showroom floor also. It's the way they align the vehicle I was told so there is a tweak to do to the rear, as well as, a slight tie rod adjustment. This problem is fixed now. My conciliation price.

First of all, good on you for standing your ground. Everyone could've had a different outlook on the situation. I bet mine would've been probably the same as yours but I know for a fact I would've had a harder time not giving in to all the dealer's solutions, especially in regards to the first issue. So I am glad you stood by your concerns and got a solution YOU were happy with as a customer.
Second, hats off to your Lexus dealer for handling this situation. Primarily to understanding their customer's concerns and providing a solution that puts them first, not themselves. I am glad to hear that the technicial wasn't trying to weasel out acting like the issue isn't there. Here in Poland we had a pretty loud, few years long case of a faulty S63 AMG and while I am not sure who was in the right and who was wrong in it as I haven't followed the topic in a while (the only thing I've heard few months ago was that the car ended up in Ukraine?), the thing I'm sure about is your Lexus dealer handled an issue with a brand new, expensive car 100x better than the Merc dealer here did. I can imagine it might've be a little bit frustrating to hear the dealer is trying to play with wheels and tires when you made it clear it's not the issue, but considering how they treat you it's just respectful to let them cook as long as your car isn't out of service for many months. Again, hats off to them for handing you a new car instead of trying to fix the issue while you're on hold as they try to minimize their loss.
Situations like these make me stick with a seller that's often more expensive than the competition. I have one store that I primarily source my electronics from and even though their markup is always X-1X percent higher, I stick with them because I have never had any issues with returning faulty products or making a warranty claim through them.
Also, for the final take, completely agree with the top comment here. Thanks for breaking it down for us. The video's been not only entertaining but also informative and I'm glad I could learn something.

I leased a 2023 GX from Lexus of Watertown. Brought it in for same thing a vibration between 1,600-2,000 rpm (worse at 1,900). They just denied it and said that's the way it is. Have felt similar sensation, but less noticeable on loaner. Must just depend on the specific GX how bad it is. I'm sure most customers just don't notice it (but i came from a cl550). I figure just not refined (even considering body on frame) compared to true luxury cars. Hopefully, the 550 fixes this kind of stuff. I did get an offer months later to swap out the GX, but would have had to start a new 3 year lease. People at Lexus of Watertown are ok, but I can attest this was preferential treatment.

Maybe the influence of being an influencer helped. Kudos for getting it resolved by the good dealer. I’ve owned several cars over the years with a hard to solve issue. I did threaten the lemon law on one car and the issue may have finally been fixed but I traded it in a year for peace of mind. Another car had a strange vibration that balancing and rotating didn’t help it just changed how it felt. It turned out to be 2 wheels with a warp on the inside of the rim (not uncommon with their huge offset). The dealer went in half and paid for one replacement. I got the other at their cost. More recently a brand new car had a vibration at idle. Another one I drove had a similar but far less vibration. 18k miles later, the plugs were changed and solved the issue!!!

Kind of similar to what im going through right now. (Only similarity being a dealership) I bought a used 2018 gti with 56,000 miles from an Audi dealer in Calabasses California. It had a good service record and clean title. I test drove it and everything seemed fine. But as I put around 150 miles on the car I noticed it would pull to the left when I would accelerate or decelarate. It got more violent very quickly in a few days and the same day I contacted the dealer about this problem, the lower control arm separated intself from the wheel entirely in a drive thru. Audi gave me a complete check list telling me the car met all the safety requirements. Imagine if that happened on the freeway? Well out of my own pocket, it was towed to the dealership where they would later tell me the damages would be around 10k. Which the warranty wont cover and neither would they. Mind you Ive only put about 200 miles on the car and a 100 of those miles was going to the dealership. This obviously isn't right so I contacted my cousin who works for a law firm and told the dealership about this. Afterwards they said they would take care of the issue. Its been over a month that the car has been over there but they said it would be ready sometime this week so Im hoping they are right. My plan when I get the car back is to take it to my local mechanic and have them inspect it thoroughly just to be safe. BUT OH MAN what a nightmare this has been. Overall this Audi dealership was plain rude to me at times as well as I kept presenting about this issue and how I brought up legal action. if anyone is thinking of buying a car from Audi Calabasses. Just don't.

You did the all the right things. I had a similar experience with a 2018 Volvo S90. I am very sensitive to noises, rattles, vibrations. I had a driveline vibration that started at 45 and continued up to 90. My entire car shuttered/vibrated from the floor through the seats, steering wheel, and touch points. We tried different wheels and tires at first. Then the repairs kept escalating. They replaced over 12 thousand dollars in parts and the issue persisted. The car was in the shop more than I had it. So I ended up trading it. The first Volvo dealer just brushed me off and said this is how they are. The second dealer really did try to resolve the issue. I had a master tech working on my car and he was as frustrated as I was. I hope you have many trouble free miles with the new one. As for me I am very happy trucking along in my replacement for the S90, a BMW 5 series.

Then the other issue was the steering wheel seemed off center and the car was pulling to the right. I took it in and they told me the truck needed a front end alignment. I asked how much it would cost, they gave me a price and I went with it. When the truck was done my service advisor came out, handed me the paperwork and send me out the door. He told me it was on them. Mine is the 2022 Black Line Edition. Ocassionally the drive feells a touch rough and then on most days it feels super smooth. It's a bit puzzling. It's pretty neat that the dealership was so willing to work with you. My old Hyundai dealership would not listen to me when I took my car in. It had a misfire and there was a TSB for dirty injectors. I politely asked for them to checked it and they refused. "We can't do anything unless it comes in with a code". So frustrating.
I'm curious how this dealer "traded you out" of your cars? You sounded very happy with that solution, as if they bought it back. My mom had a similar situation almost 10 years ago. Her new Chrysler 200 developed a drivetrain issue, and the dealership manager says "sure we'll get you out of the car no problem". Made it sound like they were buying it back, but in fact they traded as normal and lengthened the loan to get "the same payments". So I'm just curious on how that went down, because this dealership sounds way too good to be true lol. I would not be happy to have to trade out of 2 brand new cars. Never been to an honest dealership in my life.

Lexus has the best service I've ever experienced, and I've been to at a minimum of 20 dealers for different vehicles in the MA/RI area. Herb Chambers Lexus Sharon must have a "run for the hills" flag on my account due to my sister's absolute nightmare of a 2010 IS250 we bought from them 3 years ago. She still has it, and they spent 1/2 what we paid for it in repairs for the sound system and electrical system to fix a failing amp. Also, the service valet backed it into some lady's brand new GX460 DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF US. Poor guy. I was in loaners for months in total, weeks at a time and they always kept us updated, always had a loaner set aside for us, never made us pay a dime for service, it was just excellent and seamless overall. If I was in the market for a luxury car, then I'd go straight to Lexus. Even if their cars are a little old and maybe not quite class-leading, their sales and service department are far and above the best dealership experience.

Usually starts between 15-20K. When it gets bad you need to have them spun. My current LX with 53K on it is starting to vibrate again when I break. Cant spin them again, will have to replace them. I think I am going to look for a non Lexus rotor. Someone has to make one that wont warp with simple everyday driving.

It’s incredible to me that my 99 LS400 has the same cruise control stick as your new new Lexus truck.

The little things are the worst.. my new '24 Civic HB has a subtle metallic clicking noise when I turn the steering wheel gently left to right, and the brake pedal assembly makes a pretty annoying rattle whenever I step on it, which is even more annoying because I can feel it in my foot as well as hear it. The Honda dealer dismissed it as normal operation, unfortunately (maaaaybe the brake pedal noise is, but the steering wheel noise definitely isn't). A huge upgrade from my '13 Chevy Sonic, just sad that these two minor issues detract so much from the new car experience. Glad you were persistent and had a cooperative + helpful dealer!

Sooooooo glad you shared that old TSB. My dealer and Lexus are fighting me, and this is dead on what’s happening with mine too.
GX’s have a lot of ongoing vibration issues…
Typically the OEM tires but also the drivetrain. Ask any shop foreman and “these all have a harmonic resonance in the 60’s mph range”. But also due to the platform. My 2021 on 18’s was perfect. My 2023 on 19’s never stops shaking and they can’t sort it out.
Love the truck but my 2023 is unbearable on road at times. Bought a set of new takeoff 18’s from another, since the dealer and Lexus corporate keep telling me the shakes are within spec…
But it never stops. Varies by every road force balance but only gets worse. My steering wheel violently shudders at times, but then not always. Truly wondering if it’s the drivetrain, so a Lexus field engineer is to test it next.

Hey Tedward, I've been a fan for over five years now, and I must say, you're an excellent engineer and storyteller. Your dealership is impressive, and I left a positive review mentioning your name! I'm in the tri-state area and plan to purchase my Lexus there in the future. Thanks for your fantastic work and videos. It's great that everything got sorted out. It's surprising that Lexus, known for reliability, had a key issue - they should be more careful. Most people might not notice the vibration, but us car enthusiasts pick up on everything! I can totally relate. With many dealers being shady, I appreciate a good one when I see it. The fact that they replaced your car three times is wild. I'm thrilled you're enjoying the car. It's crazy how even new cars can have issues. We leased a 2017 Civic LX manual, and its AC went out within the first year, same with our 2017 Forester family car. You'd think new cars mean no issues, but technological advancements have made these machines more complicated! Hope to meet you in MA one day :)

Why would you leave a review to a company you've never done business with? That breaks Googles ToS and Tedward's outcome realistically isn't the norm. No dealer is going to let you depreciate 2 brand new vehicles the way he did unless you have an audience.

I bought 3 brand new Lexus IS500s the past 2 years. Upon trade-in & taking delivery of the new car. I follow my methodology mindset (habit) checklist: Make sure VINs match on car & paperwork. All associated keys are for new car, Make sure all accessories booklets are for the new car. When I took delivery of my current '23 IS500 the booklet was from a Lexus RX but when I mentioned it the sales guy apologies & looked for the IS500 booklets & found it in the RX.

I had the same problem in my 2013 Venza and it was the bearings for me. I hope this helps.
