  • I get asked so many times on Instagram how I grow my roses so big how I keep them in flower for so long and how I avoid pest and disease problems
The answer is simple healthy plants come from healthy soil, I mulch at least once a year alternating between well rotted mushroom compost and fully organic Peat free soil conditioner I use around 9m3, 4m3 on the garden beds alone

I apply this to the entire garden to a depth of at least 100 mm 4” in old money
By adding organic matter to your soil do you know only add vital Nutrients and trace elements also locking moisture during periods of drought
I also give each one of my roses are compost Scoop full of fire ash around the base of each plant in March or April just as they are really starting to wake up for the season ahead

Hi Ben, I am new to roses and plan to get several this year 😬 Thank you so much for your helpful videos! Can I use cow manure instead? I can buy that in bags here from the nursery, but not horse manure. Thank you 😃🌹

Thank you I’m really glad that you enjoy the content you can, indeed of course use cow manure and in fact it is actually better cows have four stomachs, so you’ll actually find it has very little weed seed in it please ensure that it is least 24 to 36 months old and use it sparingly as it will be very nutrient rich

Ben is seaweed liquid feed or tomorite ok to use..And would I only use westland pellets at the beginning of the season. Any advice welcomed. What do you use to spray before growth in feb/march to ward off infections like black spot mildew, etc? I remove blackspot but cause so much rain it's been rife Appreciate your support. We have redditch clay but do add J.I no3 and multiple purposes soil & Carr special organic soil improve recommended by D.A, too. Kind Regards Suzie' Bromsgrove uk

Hi Ben do you build up the manure on top of the bud Union or do you clear soil first, and then replace with mulch ? Ta

I tend to leave a small doughnut hole around the stems hear where it’s so mild we are able To keep the unions proud above ground if it’s cold where you are you may cover them

    Hi Ben
Sorry, again I am drawing on your hard earned experience. Can you recommend a suitable DA rose for an obelisk, 6 foot tall. I already have the Pilgrim.
    Many thanks

Of course you may, your options for something so small are going to be very limited why don’t you take a look at something along the lines of sceptred Isle which is actually a shrub rose which you could contain within an obelisk that along with something like the Wedgewood Rose which is floppy and needs some support

This year it was nearly 10, it’s a huge cost but it’s something that has to be done The benefits far out weight the cost
