I agree with everything you have said, Silas Marner is a winner! So healthy, the combination of coloring from the stems to the leaves to the blooms is incredible, gorgeous blooms… has EVERYTHING going for it and has completely captured my heart 😍

Beautiful rose. I understand the word 'unfussy' to mean undemanding, uncomplicated, not requiring special attention. It's a positive rather than a negative word. So you and David Austin Roses are therefore in agreement on this rose.

Сколько часов солнца требует Сайлс Марнер по минимум? Он не доберёт розового цвета и будет белый, но меня это устраивает. Спасибо.
I grew roses 15 years ago. Wish I would have kept the two Austin's that I had:Jude the Obscure and Tradescant. Back to growing roses again and my first two Austin's will be Silas Marner, and James L. Austin. Thanks for this review Gardener Ben. I probably would have not even looked at this rose if it weren't for your 2022 top 20 and this review.

Yes each rose will preform differently in the blistering heat often loosing colours fragrance and bloom life
Just got 2 of these for 60% off because they were last years crop😊. Must have watched this video 5 times before buying and planting them, really good info. Thank you for it. I have them facing south and west even though D.A. recommends part shade so we'll see. The Silas Marner smells incredible which is most impressiveto me. The smell actually hit me when I walked outside this morning.😊.

I never seem to be dressed or equipped without them. They are never far away and I have to confess that I use them for all sorts of very inappropriate things which they weren’t built for.

Hi Ben wondering what you feed your beautiful roses and do you use any spray I come from new Zealand
I get asked this question an awful lot I am 100% organic and keep bees within my property so don’t use any sprays whatsoever
Instead I focus on creating habitat and encouraging beneficial insects into the garden such as hover flies ladybirds and earwigs these deal with most of the pest problems you may incur also keeping plants healthy and properly watered
With regards to feeding I choose to focus on soil health and condition mulching with an organic based compost to a depth of at least 100 mm in March and April the only other feed my roses receive it’s on fire ash in late April which I walked in after sprinkling on the soil

Hi Ben, thanks for the incredible review. How would Silas marner compare to eustacia vye in the areas of scent and flowering productivity? Which one would you choose if you had to?

I have to ask you Ben how the Silas Marner compares to Eustacia Vye in terms of scent as I particularly liked Munsted Wood and sadly its discontinued. What are your thoughts please. Thankyou Ben
Please do take the time to watch. My best of selection includes 20 of my most recommended David Austin, Roses. I also produced a Best for fragrance collection as well but in answer to your question, Silas Marner has a much stronger richer fragrance than Eustacia vye also consider and take a look at Gabriel Oak. The fragrance on that one is cracking.
I live in zone 8b in the US (Pacific NW)- we have a mild climate, but I want to plant this in a very sunny area with lavender. Do you think SM would perform well in full sun? Thank you for the amazing review!
Thank you for your comment, and I think it would not only look beautiful with lavender that perform well in the heat as well. I have mine here planted on the Southwest aspect in a really warm spot of the garden performs very well.

For me, this one should be grown as a standalone shrub

I’m a little confused about the foliage of this beauty. Are the red canes just on new growth or is that just it’s characteristic and all it’s canes will forever be red? Thank you!
A good question I’m sorry if I didn’t make myself completely clear much like a Gabriel Oak Munstead wood Olivia Rose Austin Lady Emma hamilton and this rose growing tips of flushed Crimson red this fades as the plant forms bark They then turn normal dark green and finally Brown

I want a rose for a large pot, I’ve bought Silas marner, mill on the floss and Olivia Austin. I want lots of green foliage when there’s fewer blooms, repeat flowering during summer and a strong scent [i don’t want much!]. Do you recommend any of the 3 I’ve bought or would you suggest another one? Thank you
For what you’re looking for all of these would be perfect as long as the container is large enough it’s going to need to be at least 60 cm in diameter and around 65 to 70 cm in depth

Hi Ben....when you cut roses to bring inside, in what stadium must be the flowers?
Must they are open or may the buds be still half closed?

The best blooms are picked early in the morning just before the Sun comes up, remove them from the plant and place them straight into a bucket of water before taking them into the house for your arrangements. The best picked just as they are around a third open buds, any tighter, sometimes fail to open at all.

Hi Ben, Thanks for sharing your thoughts about this Rose. You have sold me on this one but I have to ask if it will do good in Zone 9A with a very hot and humid summer and thinking about putting it in a container east facing.
As long as your container is large enough I think it will be just fine

Hands down it has to be fragrance. Olivia does have a fragrance, but it’s nowhere on this particular level.
Hi Ben, I've watched a ton of your videos but still really confused. Could you please recommend a shrub which would be fragrant enough so you can smell it around the bush (sort of like munstead wood style) but with the globe/pompon shape of the flower? Looks like Jude de obscure would be my choice but it's sadly discontinued:( I was looking into Vanessa Bell and Sceptres Isle but looks like both are nowhere near as fragrant? Appreciate your advice ..

@@the_gardenerben I did, that's why i'm still confused as you've mentioned so many of them :) Which of those do you recon gives the strongest (meaning you can smell it from the distance) scent: Vanessa Bell, Mill on the Floss or Scepter'd Isle? All the best roses in your top aren't a globular shape (CP,HC etc) so i'm looking at the closes profile to Jude de obscure in terms of scent/flower shape, Many thanks:)

No luck in finding a cutting on sale either;/ I'm in Solihull, UK :) I do like the shape of Roald Dahl and Vanessa Bell , it's just seems like none of them are fragrant enough to compensate for Jude the Obscure ;/
If I had to choose between silas marner and Emily bronte, what would you recommmend, to match with eustacia vye?
Personally I would have to say that sails marner is a much better rose than Emily Brontë in my growing experience
SM is a much more heavy performing rose here in the UK but that opinion does differ where it’s grown on its own roots in the United States

@Ben Hamilton Anderson -The David Austin expert I think I’ve found my rose I’m adding next year! I was going with Saint Cecilia but the health of this one lures me in because we have lots of black spot here
I thought "fussy" means that it is not easy to take care of?
Fussy has many meanings
