Teardown Review: New Bauer Long-Throw DA Polisher from Harbor Freight

- Harbor Freight just released this new, more expensive random-orbit polisher. It's part number 56367 and it has a longer throw than the older models, but it comes at a higher price. Here’s a tool test where I compare both dual action polishers side-by-side and tear them apart to see how they’re made.
Here’s a link to an Astro Pneumatic backing plate that many people use on the cheaper Bauer polishers. This is an Amazon affiliate link, so the channel will earn a commission from qualifying purchases: amzn.to/2MOBYZS - Auta a dopravní prostředky
Wow. This is a step up in product reviewing.
The tear down for quality and parts inspection is superb.
As an Engineer these are the type of detail reviews I look for. Not just usage and effectiveness but design and build quality is just as important.
Your post helped me. I purchased the Bauer and tried it out of the box. It worked fine, it was loud and I did notice the vibration. I tore open the gear housing, cleaned out the grease and added new good quality grease. The noise and vibration were greatly reduced! Your post break down helped me greatly on my purchase. Thank you very much.
Superb presentation! No obtrusive background music. Succinct and to the point. Good editing. Good summary. Thank you.
The distinction between 8MM and 20MM throw is substantial. It's a totally different tool - that longer throw will substantially increase cut and reduce work time for defect removal.
Amazingly detailed review. Your knowledge of materials, parts and their purpose is astonishing.
one of the best product reviews I have ever seen. Very thorough. currently the prices are $70 for the 5.7 amp and $90 for the 7.5. I would spend the extra $20..
Excellent review! As a part-time detailer I was interested in purchasing the newer model and have a similar older model you explained in detail the differences but your conclusion was excellent as well as it will justify me purchasing the newer model when it goes on sale Good work bud thank you for your time. Looking forward for the next video 🙂
I have an older one and am happy with it. When replacing I would upgrade for the small added features. Happy holidays to you.
Thanks for the great review. I was trying to decide between the two HF Bauer polishers. After watching numberous CZcams videos, I chose the newer Bauer with the 20mm throw. I haven't used it yet, but the ramping speed control, lower vibration, longer and rubber coated cord, ease of brush replacement, and the rat tail trigger handle sold me on spending the extra money...all that, and the fact that I still had $180 left on my HF gift card from the class action suit. I was glad to see they used more/different grease in the gear box on this model, without me having to tear it down to check before even using it. Can't wait to get started using it for paint correction and polishing, after deep washing and claying my 1993 red Accord (212k) and 2003 black Expedition (50k)!!
Yes I would ! And I did ! I did not know I could fine tune the counter .. thank you for your very professional video !!
Very nice video, thank you.
Because I have a boat and two cars to maintain I opted for the newer tool.
The extra $ didn't dent my budget and I appreciate less vibration.
I also use this tool on smaller projects and enjoy the ergonomics over the older tool.
This is an excellent review. Exactly what I was looking for. Subbed
Thanks for another great review! I've been pleased with my trusty Chicago electric da, tho last year I did have to reattach a wire that came out of one brush holder terminal. That said I'll keep the one I have until it dies, but when it does I'll strongly consider the bauer long throw.
I truly appreciate your review I am going forward the newer one because this is my first polisher and I agree with you if I already had one I would not spend the extra money but being that I’m starting from scratch it’s gonna be worth it for me and also being that I’ve never done this before so that slow start can you give me a little better sense of control in set my mind at ease and I’m not gonna burn through my clear.
Another great teardown and comparison
Excellent demonstration and so deep knowledge. Thank you .
Just like you, since I already have the 1st gen polisher, I'm not justified in buying another one for $100. For those who feel they need more performance out of your polisher, I recommend spending the money on some good microfiber cutting pads. I don't need anything more aggressive than those, they cut as fast as I want to---so there is little benefit in the long throw for me. Great video as always TT!
Good suggestion on the pads.
I have the older red one.It works pretty good. Your videos are always fantastic! Thanks for the awesome review! Happy New Year!
Thanks. Happy new year to you.
Wow! Absolutely love this guy’s reviews 👋🏻 The knowledge and thoroughness A+. A great help in purchasing the right tool for your needs. Well done sir!
i know im asking randomly but does anybody know a trick to log back into an instagram account?
I was dumb lost my account password. I would love any assistance you can give me.
@Anderson Ayaan instablaster ;)
@Leonidas Princeton thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site on google and Im in the hacking process atm.
I see it takes a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Leonidas Princeton It did the trick and I now got access to my account again. Im so happy:D
Thank you so much you saved my ass!
@Anderson Ayaan You are welcome xD
Great break down. New one seems like great value compared to other higher priced brands with similar design.
I think one should also take into account available accessories that will work with new model.
Been missing your tear down videos!
Thanks.
Thanks for the review. On my way to purchase one within the hour.
Thank you for tearing this down love your videos
Very good in-depth review . I polish about 6 cars a year so this ( especially with a 25% off coupon) is good enough.
I just purchased this bad boy & cut & buffed my camaro this morning. Are you kidding me! Black paint looks like a pro buffed my black RS. What a nice buffer for the first timer, HIGHLY RECOMMEND. No vibration no noisy gear sound
Yes,it is worth the money I have replaced the grease and backing plate to a five inch runs smooth
Thanks for the review. This really shows the differences between the two models. I'm not sure I would pay more for the Bauer brand, even though it looks a little more robust.
I just happened upon this video while waiting for one of my videos to upload. Very nicely done. Thumbs up and I will poke around a bit and more than likely subscribe. Thank you.
excellent video, I will go for the new model definitely!!
Super review man thanks!!
Just seen your page I will subscribe I like that there is no music and that you disassemble to really see the insides of the tool. Just wish you could've done some more review on some other DA Polishers. Good job
This video help me make a decision easy. I'll spend a bit more and get the long throw model.
Thanks for the comparison . Ill go with newer mod. 20% disc. on my latest mag. cover
You should do a New tear down and comparison of a current Bauer vs. A Rupes Mark iii. I think a ton of people would really like to see if Rupes is the premium product they claim.
Thanks for doing these reviews of the HF polishers. I fall in the same group as you. Would only need to use it once or twice a year so I think I am going to get one of the less expensive HF polishers as it would be good enough for me
Thanks for watching.
Yup that goes for me too , thanks .
@@ToolTeardowns bitch ass punk
@@SKANK_HUNT49 how come you're so mad little girl
@@stevefernandez661 It was _that time_ of month again.
Great video, I’m gonna but the new one with a 10% off Bauer coupon and change my old one to a 3” backing plate.
I really like the soft start
And the button position well suits the overall design 👌
Just got mine. I dig it.
Thanks for another great video
Great vid, I’m definitely buying the new one 😎
great comparison!
You did a nice job on your video. I never use one but if I was buying one I would go for the better one since it would do the job quicker.
Thanks for watching.
Thank you for the great review
Thanks for watching.
Great video as always... Subscribers going up...
Thanks for watching.
Good stuff, thanks!
Your review sold me on this product for home use. I have a Porter Cable 7424XP that gives me excellent results, but since developing arthritis in my hands the case diameter, vibration and on/off give me some difficulty. Looking forward to what appears to be a more ergonomic machine. Have also been eyeing the G9; since this is low usage, and a trial for me will give the Bauer a go.
You can buy some anti-vibration gloves. After I got my da and a few uses my hands were very tngly. The gloves almost cut down that feeling. I have a Meguiars polisher. I will not polish without the gloves now
I would not say that there is "just a little improvement" in the newer one, because the "Throw" of 20 mm versus 8 mm makes it MUCH more powerful and efficient at polishing a rough, just applied paint job. (Perhaps the older one is acceptable for only applying wax or removing fine blemishes, but little else).
Just started the vid. I’ve had my eye on the 99 $ Bauer. I’m eager to see if it’s any good.
Good job 👍
Great video! but it would have been nice to see it being used on vertical panels to see at what point it stalls. Also given a choice would you buy this product or would you buy the griots G9??
I think we need to adhere to a standard WATT rating, just easy to compare. Good video sir.
Great channel.
Thanks
Wow, nice channel. Amazing.
Nice Video, my Porter Cable 7424XP just died and I'm looking for a replacement.
Did you buy this new one?
great video! do you think they will make a 15mm throw version?
Great video and breakdown!
I'm having an issue with mine that it doesn't spin even with it's own weight on high speed setting. Is there a clutch or something that I can increase resistance on?
i like the review
how much would it cost to apply epoxy yourself to all those components? about $5 or so?
it looks like it would be easy to do yourself and save over higher end. maybe replace any low quality bearings too?
Sorry I asked a question in a older video too but do you test amazon brands ever? (I also asked about makita/Milwaukee/dewalt polishers, and maxshine)
It would be nice to see a little more on the backing plate. Can it be easily swapped out for a 5" like the older model (I have 2 + a GG). ALL my pads are 5".
Nice tear down review. I do wish you had taken it a step further and tested the noise level. Some of these HF buffers are extremely noisy. Would you say that the newer one is any less noisy/louder than the older version?
I have to have the new one because o will be using it as a sander and the 2.5x throw means sanding wood means two and a half times faster sanding,
Bauer is really trying to step on board with the new long throw design at Harbor Freight that says compare to rupes.
I have roots 15 mm long throw I have had other cheap dual action polishers from Harbor Freight they work I had trouble cheap rotary from there that work to but I am curious to try there new $99 long throw polisher like it might be a good Wanda keep in the box if something goes wrong with the other one
Nice review. That downgraded coil spring pressuring the brush is a real disappointment on such a key part as is the lack of epoxy on the winding. Too bad as the rest of it looks pretty decent. Thanks for great work.
I have the newer polisher and am wondering if the 5" backing plate linked above will work on it?
I don't polish much but I do like DA sanding. The old one would take common pads and discs. Can the new one?
Can you swap out for a 5/16 24 PSA sanding pad? Great review!
My next tool. Wondering if their coupon would work on it?
Great video. Learned so much.
Good 👍
The power cable of my old Bauer is not plastic. Its very good quality.
Greasy face. Awesome! Love the videos. Cheers, Mike
The new polisher is on sale now at Harbor Freight for $59.99! Compared to $99.99, I think it is a good value. I've been sealing my car once per year by hand and I'm thinking this tool would probably save me a lot of work. What do you think? Should I buy it?
Can anyone share with me if there is a way to put larger sanding disks on this unit?. I love the random pattern, but I really need a larger sanding disk to sand 336 square feet of concrete fence.
Has anyone reset the vibration adjustment screw and if so to what setting.....how many turns in or out....
Where did you purchase the 5” backing plate?
@4:10 you mention you can fine tune the counter weight. Would this be beneficial when switching over to a 5" pad?
100%
Thank you for this video, I've had my eye on this machine. However, the Griots G9 right now is just $20 more. If it was your money which would you buy?
g9 all the way why waste your hard earned money on junk.
@@carl3233 I had the G9 in my virtual cart since a website had it on sale for $120 and that price had me leaning in that direction. The sale countdown timer was at 5 days when I put it in the cart. I was doing a little more research and started to see several reports of the G9 quitting in the middle of a job and not starting back up. I read that there is a "new" version of the G9 that might correct those issues so I was waiting until the end of the sale in the hopes of getting the newest inventory. However, I checked back in on my cart and the price was back up to $150 before the end of the sale. I contacted the company's website and it turns out that Griots told them that they can't have it on sale so they had to put the price back up without notice. My only other experience with Griots was an overpriced bottle of garbage car wash so I wasn't a fan to begin with but we considering the new machine solely on the sale price. The other deterrent was the fact that the G9 doesn't have a soft start. Who designs an all new machine from the ground up and doesn't even put in a soft start? Even Bauer did that. I may or may not get the Bauer but I'm definitely not giving my money to Griots anymore. Maybe a Maxshine after I do a little more research.
I have the upgraded Bauer polisher and use it several times a month. I've used it over a couple of years now and finally burned it out. Are replacement parts available? Or should I just replace the whole tool?
Is this Bauer long throw polisher better than the old porter cable 7424xp cheapie? I just ask because I bought the PC like 10 years ago and never used it. Still in it's box. I'm getting ready to clean up my 2 old cars to sell and full paint correct my newer Lexus. Should I sell the PC and get the Bauer?
Has anyone unscrewed the pad plate and replaced it with a brush with a threaded stud, such as Shurhold 3207?
I've never owned one. Thanks for doing these reviews.
The DA polishers are pretty useful. I got the older one in this video several years ago. They can make old paint look way better. It made a huge difference on my truck.
Thanks for putting the reviews with amazing details. A lot of us would like to have a tear-down comparison of HF 56367($110) vs Griots G9 ($150) as both of them are almost on the same price range.
That might be a little apples and oranges as the G9 is a short-throw (9mm if I remember) and Bauer 56367 is a long-throw. If you're talking build quality, it wouldn't be hard to guess that the G9 will be superior with a lifetime warranty.
I would have been interested in your thoughts about replacing the factory 6" backing plate with a third-party 5" backing plate. I've heard that the 5" doesn't bog down as much, vibrates less, and is easier to manipulate on curved surfaces or in tight spaces.
Basically, it works better ... but is it worth the 40% to 50% cost differential?
P.S. Got my answer elsewhere. It's recommended that you replace the 6" backing plate because the factory backing plate flexes too much. So, if you're going to spend the money to replace it, you might as well replace it with a 5" backing plate. (I replaced mine with a RUPES 5" backing plate, Part No. 980-027N. Works great!)
Watching harbor freight expand their tools is like watching Dewalt in the 90s, “NEW DRILL, now has one hand chuck, 149.99$!!” *model is exactly the same as your previous model, will not make you do your job any faster, also the chuck only cost us 1.52$, no refunds”
Yes, spend the money… I have this Bauer and it is my workhorse…
Can you do a teardown video of HF cordless mini polisher?
I'll keep that in mind. It's a good suggestion.
Does the backing plate have the 5/16" male thread the same as the old model? Also, would a 5" backing plate (with cooling holes) fit in place of the 6" I wish they had done a 15mm throw instead of the more aggressive 20mm throw, and made it a 5" polisher instead of 6"
Why not just change out the backing plate/pad for a 5"?
@@KBzPTGT That's basically what I am asking. Does the polisher have the conventional 5/16" male thread stud on the backing plate so a 5" BP will fit?
@@lacro5686 It doesn't use they same type of backing plate as the older 8mm versions. Frpm what I've seen it does use the same type of backing plates that some other 15/21mm throw DA units do such as the Maxshine, Adams Swirl Killer & GG Boss series. Hope this helps.
@@KBzPTGT Got it! Thanks...
Wish the new one had the epoxy on the comutator windings

Straight from HF web page for this polisher...
Why does the $75 Bauer have more RPMs than the $100 one?
Do you have a discord and a patreon? Thanks for these videos they’re really a public service
I don't. I don't feel I can produce enough videos to warrant asking viewers for money. Maybe some day. Thanks for the kind words.
I bought the new tool you have reviewed. I did not know the differences between rotary and DA. I am about to reduce gross overbuildup of gelcoat epoxy resin I applied to the hull of my boat with wet sanding. I assume this tool will cut deeply faster and more evenly than rotary if I am learning the uses, but it not please correct me. Thank you.
Rotary buffers cut much faster than dual action polishers. I worked in rv and boat yards in the past and all they used were Rotary buffers.
These are two different animals....no comparison
I have the GG6. Do you think this an upgrade?
Well, the Griot's polisher has an 8mm throw. The longer throw on the Bauer would be a benefit in some cases, but could also be a negative in some cases.
Bauer brand Is good
Mine didnt last 2 weeks
I found it impossible to get the counterweight out. Any suggestions?
Did you ever find how because I can’t it’s to tough to get out !!!
only spins one direction, the fan is centrifugal, it tosses air outward, outward is a direction so curving the blade is almost pointless.
it is a bit disappointing that he used channel locks to disassemble the tool rather than the hex wrench provided with it
I thought the hex wrench was just to take off the plate?
No I won’t spend on the upgrade
Can this be used as a d/a sander for body work?
that's what I was wondering. It probably wouldn't hold up for very long. Pneumatic DAs kick ass. I hate firing up the air compressor for every little thing though.
grumpybill I have used the old model as a DA for 2years still going .
