  • In this video I tear apart two new Bauer dual-action polishers to see which version is better. The Bauer DA polishers from Harbor Freight Tools are part numbers 64528 and 64529. Plus, I compare them to the older 69924.
    Here's my previous video on these DA polishers: • Teardown: New Bauer DA...

    What a great video. I didn't know that HF had products that were similar but had upgrades in them. This is very helpful when making a decision on which one to buy. Thanks so much for your insight into these products otherwise we probably wouldn't have any idea about this.

    Update, I just purchased one of these newer models. Model number 64528, I took it apart and apparently harbor freight must be listening to us. They replaced the old grease with some blue high quality grease, now the commentator is resin to prevent problems with wiring from vibration and the circuit board with the speed control is that has also been dipped in resin

    Watching videos like this makes be wonder about the product development, procurement, testing/quality control group at Harbor freight (if they have them). I understand building things to a price point but with this hard push to bring better tools to the market place, going cheap doesn't set much confidence in the buyer. Especially now that some of their prices are creeping closer to other name brands.

    I love that you’re doing this. It has always frustrated me that I have to unbox everything I buy from there in the store to see which looks like the better item number. That is, if I haven’t watched a video like this, of course. It usually leads to getting looked at like I’m trying to steal or something crazy like that. It’s a bummer.

    Great video. Now I know which one to go with. This is one thing I've never liked Harbor Freight doing---having all those item numbers where you have to really look over every tool before you buy. But it also sucks because unless there is a current video showing someone like yourself tearing down a tool, people aren't able to always make the best decision just at face value. With some items it doesn't really matter much, but if we're going to spend more money on power tools, it can be night and day. These videos are really good because there are still a lot of people who don't know that Harbor Freight's different item numbers can mean significant difference in a tool.

      Time is money, if you spend less money you'll need to spend more time to ensure you're getting what you need. Could throw a couple hundred dollars more at a product and get closer to perfection than having to scour reviews to find out which "cheaper" machine is worth getting. At least that's how I see things.

    Thanks for the great videos. The -29's are a bit harder to come by - near me at least. I liked the feel of the -28 in the hand a bit better due to it's slimmer body and quality chord, but ultimately went with the -29 due to complaints on vibration. Packed it with synthetic grease and it is super quiet and smooth.

    What I dont understand is that the 529 is the predecessor to the 528. Chronologically, it's backward. You're not throwing most of us off, and we dont always want the newest version. Keep it simple HF, and keep the item #'s in order by design change date... please... Thanks for sharing. Really like the format of this video. Concise and efficient. Well done. Subbed. Will be watching many more. EDITED: Scratch the section where i was confused with the design date and item # order. So, HF went back to an older design (for the 529) to fix issues with a near complete product change of the 528. Cutting corners doesn't always work.

    I'm not convinced HF has multiple versions of the same model across their inventory because they choose to make cost cuts or make improvements. The tools that have multiple versions tend to be really popular tools, so it wouldn't surprise me if they commonly switch suppliers to keep their inventory full with no lapses, or they have suppliers sometimes pullout and are forced to go shopping elsewhere to continue that model.

    • @ToolTeardowns
      @ToolTeardowns  Před 5 lety +2

      I also suspect they could be using multiple suppliers to simply maintain stock, but there are significant differences between the tools those suppliers are making.

    I think I'd swap the cord on the -29 for one like the -28 and call it good.
    I worked for years as a tool repair technician and it would be nice if we could meld the strong points of the three into one but, I think with the aforementioned cord swap (don't try it if you don't know what you're doing, there are plenty if tool repair places that would swap a cord for you) you'd be pretty good to go.
    I mention this for the reasons he stated in the video, durability, flexibility length and (the -29 has a 10' cord but, especially if you live in a colder area) the rubber is just superior. Bit it's just my OCD tool-tech nerdism kicking in. The standard cord will work just fine. Until it doesn't, then get a better, rubber one.

  • @hardlyb
    @hardlyb Před 5 lety

    A similar kind of surprising variation is in the U.S. General tool cabinets. I have the 44in, 26in, and 15in base cabinets, and the 44 and 15 are of heavier gauge steel and generally better made than the 26. It's not that the 26 is 'bad', it's just not as good as the other two, which I'm confident were made in the same factory, whereas I'm even more sure the 26 was made by a different supplier. I got the 26 and 15 at the same time, and in green, and the colors don't match, either. It's only apparent when they're very close together, but there's a difference. I don't regret the purchases, but I expected them to be three peas from the same pod.

    The 4.25:1 ratio is a "lower" gear ratio than 3.5:1, giving more torque. You said in your video that it was a higher ratio, which is incorrect. Overall great video, very informative, love to see these teardowns. Keep up the good work.

      So you think 3.5 is higher than 4.25?

    • @johnny0454
      @johnny0454 Před 2 lety +1

      @@GertTown Yes. It is what is referred to as a "taller" or higher gear ratio, providing less mechanical advantage than a lower gear ratio which is a numerically higher number. The higher the first number, the "lower" the gear ratio is, because of the greater mechanical advantage it provides.

    • @johnny0454
      @johnny0454 Před 2 lety +1

      @@GertTown It seems counterintuitive, but it's similar to the gauge system for sheetmetal and wiring, where the smaller the number the larger the gauge, like how a 16 gauge wire is substantially smaller than a 2 gauge wire (the larger the number, the smaller the wire) Gear reduction ratios are like that.

    Do yourself a big favor don’t buy a DA Polisher at Harbor Freight. It’s not going to last or perform well. They vibrate horribly bad and you will have numb hands not long after you start running the machine. They’re plenty of inexspensive entry level DA polishers out there. Keep looking save your money and get a good one. Spend your money on a tool that you’ll enjoy using and will last longer than one project.

    This is a stupid comparison since you can't pick which model number you get. It's usually which one the store carries (They usually carry one or the other but not both) or which one gets sent to you when you order online. You can't speficically get one over the other. Useless comparison.

      Thanks for the offer. I don't have a Patreon because I don't feel I can produce enough content right now to justify asking people for support. If I'm less busy in the future and can produce more videos I might start a Patreon.
