You can layer 3” of gravel then a corrugated drain pipe (with the drains facing down) then gravel to the top of the trench. It still holds a ton of water and gets rid of the trip hazard. Hope this helps!

Some people fill them with mulch, but I don’t know how healthy that is for peoples plants. Due to the wood chips sitting in standing water. I don’t know what kinds of ecological and bacterial/fungal issues you could get from it.

Thanks for your thought. Yes, that could work but I opted to dig real swales where they were because I never intended for the trenches to be permanent
