The 2024 Subaru Crosstrek Sport Is A Turbo Shy Of Being A Lifted WRX Hatch

- The sub-compact SUV segment has been lead by the #SubaruCrosstrek for over a decade and for 2024, the best just got better with the redesigned 3rd generation model. The #Crosstrek is still built on an Impreza platform, but this time, #Subaru designed the Crosstrek first with the Impreza second. The #CrosstrekSport comes standard with the bigger 2.5L engine and it’s latest design adopts some cues from the new WRX, including it’s dual-pinion steering system.

People always ask me why I have to have a Subaru in the fleet: visibility, use-ability and safety. It does everything you need it to and nothing else. Buy a sports car if you want to race, buy a truck if you want to climb. I buy a subaru for everyday life.
The impreza and crosstrek hold their value extremely well too. Some of the lowest depreciation $ amounts of all cars. I think the corolla and civic are the only others that depreciate less and im sure the civic is because of the si and type r holding their value.
I just bought the 2024 sport in silver. My Subaru journey begins.
I have the same. How are your seats wearing? They have replaced the fabric on my driver seat due to the gold trim pilling.
@@brocklanders6969 none that I can tell.
I did too. Well used 6,000 miles
I love how you guys were having sooo much fun I enjoyed every bump with you, looks like a lot of fun
Give me a manual WRX version and I’m in. Like day one buyer. Let’s go Subaru!
Factory ordered mine a couple of weeks ago. Sapphire blue w/moonroof.
Should be great for life here on the Oregon coast.
I think I'm doing the same soon, I'm still debating on this or the Wilderness. The MPG difference and price being the kicker.
This is by far the FUNNEST Sube test drive, Ive seen yet! Thank you Sofyan & Rob for the journey! Im trying to figure out which Crosstrek to get, when my Outback lease is up in Aug of '25.
I watch a lot of reviews and yours are one of the best,, nice work!!
A Crosstrek WRX would be awesome.
I think they just need to scrap the wrx and put either one of the FA24 motors in the impreza rs. The rs looks way better than the wrx.
Lol i like when you let Rob include his input. It’s gives a collaboration review vibe 🔥
Where are you feelin ‘ the vibe?
Great job reviewing this car.
I’ve got a ‘21 Impreza with a lift kit and AT tires and I love it, but if the Crosstrek comes out with a turbo, that will be seriously tempting to upgrade to.
I was hoping these reviews would go live today! Let's go!
Crosstrek plug-in hybrid with 40+ EV, ventilated seats, skid plates, solid roof, and spare tire. Would be perfect for getting to my trail heads and cooling down after a long hike!
did subaru pull the hybrid line up out of crosstrek, i cant find any
@@TheCrooksandCastle yes for now. I think plans are to reintroduce a hybrid, but doesn't seem to be much information as far as what kind of hybrid. Sounds like a chance it is not a plug in.
Very silly that Subaru is discontinuing the Crosstrek Hybrid, hopefully, like you mentioned, they might be working on a better version of the Crosstrek Hybrid, which would be great for everyone. Excellent review.
A WRX type version of this would be amazing. Hell I would be glad for 220 horse version with say 230 torque.
One thing I miss about this generation of Subies is the frameless windows. I always thought that was a neat touch on the older models.
Riding in the dirt and mud looks like a lot of fun!
great review. thank you!
Rare off-road fun! Great way to showcase a Crosstrek.
I just bought the exact same Crosstrek in Canada (Onyx trim), same colour too. In Canada it comes standard with heated steering wheel, heated mirrors and seats, and power moon roof. So far, so great.
I just bought my Subaru Crosstrek .... and I'm loving it, The Harman Kardon audio system CRANKS !!!!!
That's actually the same color and trim I priced and built, so watching this video was pretty cool, thanks. Now you did say the Dim Rear View Mirror was an option, correct? Also, how's the audio sound in the sport?
Been waiting for this video so long! Thanks for making my Monday
Rob for the win! That man can drive.
Agree-but the engine bay is cramped. Where to put the turbo? I'm sure that is not why it doesn't have one but the bigger 2.5 L makes the engine bay really stuffed
“Hey Rob don’t touch my shifter”
It doesn’t need a turbo, it needs a six speed. The 2.5 is a great engine and has plenty of power.
Love your channel. Keep it up.
They do full digital instrument clusters for the Japanese market...12.3 inches!
They finally put armrest at sport trim😅
With a lower center of gravity, does this have body oll and handling more like a car? Superb video.
They need to redo that center screen. The tall/pad setup means things like the backup camera is small. Some people kinda need a large backup camera as they get older. If they want to keep that setup,...they need to make it wider, at least, in the screen dimensions.
I think the Corolla Cross Hybrid drive train makes a lot of sense for the Crosstrek.
Actually, because the Crosstrek is pretty large, the RAV4 hybrid setup would probably fit and make more sense
Corolla Cross is slower than 2.5L Crosstrek, as is the HRV. They are barely faster than the base Crosstrek, if at all. All 3 have CVTs as well, so I don't really know why people are hating on Subaru. Corolla Cross hybrid could be better, but I don't know if it is available yet.
@@edsmith9855 True it's just that there is so much regulation that getting a hybrid is nice since some cities are looking to ban gas only, and you have to walk, bike or public transport inside.
Cross hybrid has a completely different type of AWD… the hybrid gives it extra horses. It’s 190 up and thus faster while still being quiet (and getting 41 mpg). Not an off-road vehicle, tho.
@@A_A_J. I agree but I think the Crosstrek needs a hybrid drive train, given that this vehicle has a similar TNGA platform to the Corolla cross hybrid I think it would be wise for Subaru to take that drive train, since Toyota owns 20% of Subaru they often collaborate on parts and projects.
I have the 2023 Sport, which I like better than the 2024. These cars could use a STI strut tower brace if you're into using it as a sporty car.
This needs an STI version.
Does this have remote start?? This is a must in Texas
Very nice and entertaining episode on this sport car 🚗
Nice video!
I would like to see the older 2l turbo from de wrx 2020 in the Crosstrek.
I saw they had some Limited models there as well. Did you have a chance to check out a Limited? I am curious how the upgraded Harman Kardon audio system is in it, as that is an $1800 option in the Limited.
$1500 if you do Subaru vip
Like how there’s another 2024 crosstrek sport driving by at 9:24 😂
Yep that Alpine Green is really a nice color. I saw it in person a couple days ago.
What colors look best with the yellow trim besides blue?
I got this in Pearl White, and it looks really good
Black. The yellow honestly looks gold irl.
the yellow trim applied like that just looks weird
IMO it only looks good on the alpine green and black colors
Agree.
@@WyattUTFTblack for sure
Hellcat vibes.
Not a fan. Especially the yellow trim interior.
Does the base model still have the option for a manual?
No I tried to get one they quit in 23.
Those gold strips would have been much nicer being in bright red or bright orange.
Does the 2024 Crosstrek still have a physical button to turn off the AutoStart?? (It's to the left of the steering wheel in the 2022 Crosstrek Limited.)
If Subaru moved AutoStart from a physical button to the oversized, corny touchscreen then I'm 100% not upgrading generations. I like to feel the acceleration from red lights in Sports Mode because I live in the city and need to swim lanes and corner turns 😊🎉😂
It’s a large icon on the screen above the air super simple to see and press
Can the entertainment screen be turned off?
Yes, I looked at one today, and asked the same thing 🤣
I have a 2014 Subaru Crosstrek that had a lot of problems which were common for that model year. (Excessive oil consumption, wheel bearing and early brake replacements) I have been told they have corrected these issues. My model is also a manual transmission which I think is a shame that they no longer offer this option.
I have a 2013 and I also had encountered the same problems and more.
I test drove a 2024 Impreza RS and liked it, but I am still not sure I want another Subaru to replace my 2013.
Just ordered a Wilderness
Does Rob has his own channel? His drive was much more interesting and he showed the car instead of speaking about it. It's astonishingly wonderful.
He's cute
Beautiful shooting location ❤
Man. I want a Japanese built crosstrek but I want a more powerful engine. I had bad experience with American built vehicles. People are sloppy in the state😂
You are sloppy in your shorts.
So, like...a Mazda CX-30 turbo?
You should wait for Elon musk to build cars in Mars! 😄
Looked like fun!
I'm definitely holding on for the turbo.
So a lifetime? The new CEO of Subaru already said he is pushing for a cleaner company. That's why there is no STI and less turbo vehicles are being made and new electric/hybrid models are in the works.
@@BlackBruceLeeTheGreatDekuTreeIf there continues to be enough people interested in a 178hp Crosstreck, then I guess he’ll never make the turbo.
@@danielsh1015 it won’t happen my man. All the xt models of the outback and and legacy models with the turbos are always discounted and last to sell. Subaru doesn’t overlook these things
In Canada the Crosstreck has a heated steering wheel!
half heated steering wheel, to be precise. I just realized it by today. LOL
That’s what baffles me the most about this vehicle, it’s their best selling model yet they don’t offer a trim level with the WRX turbo engine. Doesn’t make any sense, clearly there’s demand for it
22:32 tokoyo drift
When will this exact model and sport trim be on the dealer lots for sale?
I ordered a limited and the eta is July. Some people are getting their orders in June, some in August.
@@ZRodTW Yup. I'm getting my Limited around August. California region
Idk if waiting until next generation is smart on digital instrument cluster. New vehicles like the redesigned Kona and Trax come with dual LCDs standard. 2x 12.3 in Kona and 8+11 in Trax.
There's no way you can compare the 2.5 n/a to the 2.4 turbo engine. I own a 2016 WRX, had a 2.5 outback for over week from the dealer, they're not even close
I'd buy one tomorrow if they'd just turbocharge the thing. An N/A 4-banger at altitude is just too wheezy.
👏👏👏 THANKS SOFYAN AND ROB .....HAVE A BEAUTIFUL DAY EVERYONE ✌️
Who?
If they drop either of the FA24's in the impreza rs for 2025, i dont think the wrx will exist anymore.
@redlinereviews how is the steering compared to the previous generation
Subaru claimed they used the steering from the wrx
When can you order this 2.5L sport? I’m in the Usa
As far as I know, they should arrive to dealerships during June. Obviously, there are many places where you can "order" one and wait when they will have a car for you.
Two people in the car slows down the 0 to 60 times. Maybe 8.2 or so ?
I'm thinking the cloth on the top of the doors will fade.
I don't care for a display that big, it almost feels like its a distraction
As a young person, the bigger the better!
I have this model, and after a week or so, I do not notice it.
rims look like Shimano rotors.
I think I want the Mazda cx 30
Still don't understand why Subaru always gets a pass for their power trains. Any other car that had such a droning CVT and slow performance would be criticized for it.
This^^^^^ very unremarkable cars with an enormous following for some reason…
Scott completely agree but people buying this don't care. Crosstrek buyer knows the mpgs are better because the window sticker tells them but they aren't the buyers who can quantify a worse powertrain experience. It's a budget buy that's the right size with no real competitors.
@@kheldaryt I'm not just talking about customers, I'm also talking about car reviewers in general. They will tell you how they hate CVTs and complain about how slow a HR-V or Corolla Cross is but a Subaru that has a CVT that sounds worse and is just as slow is somehow no big deal.
@@skoprowski I see, I agree Subarus aren't nice and get a pass on a lot of stuff. I used to love Subaru back in the day when they made fun cars. Not remotely interested in them now but they have done a good brand job on 2 things in particular.
1. subaru's get an off roady/outdoorsy bonus so that kind of stuff doesn't matter as much? i.e. if 2 cars have cvt noise then HRV is going to be evaluated more harshly because you are taking it to the mall but Crosstrek you are doing extreme things like surfing or snowboarding. So as long as you get there it's not a big deal.... Don't think that's actually how people use them all the time but think it does mentally factor in.
2. Subaru currently has a secret sauce of not overpromising. They have done a good job of defining their brand. You don't expect it to be nice so no one is disappointed. Few people buying a Subaru wish they were getting a Lexus.
I used to own Subaru Legacy Outback. Never again! To slow and unreliable. I own Toyota now, and my next car could be even Toyota Cross, that would be better than this Subaru.
Definitely lacks a Turbo. It's got a slower engine because the Toyota bean counters was involved in the design.
Subaru really need to do what huyndai, Toyota and Honda does and make their Suv grills different from their sedans
il vx1600benzina è consigliabile?in alternativa un altro crossover 4x4 simile
Huh?? Honda and Kia are ok, but the Corolla Cross grill is butt ugly. It looks like a catfish out of water gasping for air.
Best selling subcompact cross over….big deal there is like 2 of them.
Awesome, decision made. I’m going with the Rav 4.
RAV4 competes with Forester. ?🤔
The previous generation of RAV4 is better then the current version.
If anyone in your brood is tall, I suggest you take them with you to sit in the RAV4 passenger seat.
First off the rav 4 is way more money . This car is 32,000
RAV4 is so FUGLY like most Toyota's. They need a new design team.
10 seconds in a 2 liter crossover was what you'd expect 20 years ago. Subaru is way behind in performance.
Its built for old men like me. I just like it to be reliable and to get me there. Still way better then a horse and buggy. LOL.
Drives me crazy when there’s a handle to close the hatch but people reach for the bottom lip of the painted portion and scratch it up when they’re dirty. Then you’re left with a bunch of permanent finger prints scratched into the paint. Use the handle for crying out loud!
Too many sport badges. One on the tailgate is enough.
The older Sport had the StarTex. This is a downgrade.
Startex is a chemical disaster.
Seriously, in this modern day, Subaru needs to use a hydraulic engine hood prop rather than an ancient prop stick.
You and Raities rides need to do a video together. I know you guys be running into each other on the regular
12:42
That isn't what you think it is, that is computer-operated shift lag.
Good review, but try not to use fillers like "kind of" when you speak.
Pass. A 2022/23 Crosstrek is my limit. Made in Japan, not America, doesn’t have that crap computer in the dashboard that is a retarded idea and such a distraction for the driver.
Subies sent to Canada are all made in Japan.
How many WRX owners actually __lift__ their vehicles to turn them into off roaders?
CVT= Cheap Charlies trying to skimp and maximise their profits off your hard earned . A regular auto transmission will last longer and is far better for driving in my opinion ; so I won’t be buying one , but nice review !
This CVT tran. is built by subie themself they have had time to work out lots of the bugs. Most other CVTs are out sourced that is where other manufactors are running into trouble.
Just get a warranty and who cares…
YEP and being a TURBO "SHY" of it is why I'm NOT getting one... too underpowered for me..
Too bad no more manual, just lack of sales
Have you ever sat in very slow congested traffic with a manual? It SUX BIG TIME!
Dude asking for a lot out of a cheaper vehicle. Check your expectations from a 30k vehicle, some of the stuff you expect is in the OB/W, which rightly so it is the more expensive vehicle.
US built 2.5 liter car is worse for reliability then the Japan built 2.0 liter.
Well, short a turbo and a real transmission
Oh the manual trope. Give it up.
@@RLTtizME “real transmission” can also mean a traditional torque converter transmission, none of this awful CVT crap.
@@lennygarrison6836 CVT's are great. You prefer the 8 speeds that are always searching for the right gear...and making sling shot shifts. Don't be an old fart.
@@RLTtizME nah, decent automatic would also work... cvt just stinks... will say, cvt are better than they used to be but just drove one the other day and it's still just miserable. name an enjoyable car with a cvt? can't do it.
I get why subaru does the cvt. For the consumer it's hard to quantify how much worse cvt is where as it's easy to quantify 2mpg more or whatever it is. It's just a budget play and that's fine but don't act like CVT is good as a driving experience. It's not.
@@RLTtizME nope, I prefer a traditional, smooth, automatic transmission that doesn’t exhibit massive drone noises, and which doesn’t have excessive lag when accelerating. On top of that, CVT transmissions still aren’t as reliable as a conventional automatic, and you need to change the CVT fluid often which is pretty costly. So yeah…….
CVT means no beuno for me.. Subaru needs a classic auto like Mazda is still doing with the 3GT or a manual option on all their trims
So go buy a Mazda. Subaru is doing just fine without your marketing expertise.
Check it out guys, it's the same old car, but now with more yellow highlights! :/
The outside is getting uglier😢
So it’s barely a second faster than the 2.0? Honestly I’ll take the performance hit since it sounds just as grating as the 2.0 and at least the premium trim doesn’t penalize you with god awful gloss black trim in high traffic areas.
It's actually over 2 seconds faster 0-60
CVT's SUCK!
Right but more and more manufacturers are going to them.
8 secs for a 3300lb car is way too slow, not really practical for anything other than city driving.
8 seconds is fine for intended use
Want instant torque? Get a EV
I've been driving for 36 years. You don't know what is slow unless you drive a Japanese car from the 70's or 80's. My FJ62 gets 10 Mpg, and goes 0 to 60 in 16 seconds, with a 4.0 inline 6.
@@cargueone1971 As someone who lives and drives near and on busy highways and on/off ramps, such poor acceleration is pretty dangerous.
It might be good for some but definitely not for me
@@coreygarcia622 you can buy what you like. But the acceleration is fine. Let me ask, how long have you had your licence?
@@cargueone1971 I don't need instant torque lol, I need a car that doesn't take forever to get up to highway speeds, this just ain't it for me that's all.
Over a decade, not sure why that's relevant.
@@cargueone1971 7 seconds is the new sweet spot, 8 seconds is slow for modern standards.
Man oh man I’ve been watching you for years to KNOW if this power train was in a Jeep Compass or renegade you would have TRASHED it. I mean Jesus Chris, the excuses you make for your fav JAPANESE brands always will AMAZE me.
Still underpowered and no hybrid model? What this needs is a 100hp electric motor to boost the ICE; 285 HP and 45mpg. WTF Subaru, why are you holding back on modern technology? Why are they still pushing this completely Outdated technology?
Because that would add a lot to the cost.
Not everyone wants a hybrid lol
They had a hybrid and it was pathetic. Subaru is doing just fine little fella.
The JDM versions comes only in a hybrid with the 2.0 e-boxer engine.
