    I'm 54 years old. The only Subaru I've been in was about 1986. My friend drove the hell out of that car. But I didn't know what it was. Today I own a 2022 Crosstrek sport. I feel like I've entered a secret club. I love it.

      Club it is. Welcome :) 61 here and first time I met a Subaru at about your age. I have my second Crosstrek now, and just simply cannot even let the faintest idea start to plan taking shape in my mind to change brand. I drive it in mud, dirt, woodland, and - it is unfair, I know but - it is such a fun to see all the other cars in snow...

    The one thing that Subaru could do that wouldn't have to cost too much but would improve the functionality of their vehicles considerably would be to put a front camera on all their AWD cars.

      Another thing Subaru should do, and it would cost nothing because it's all software based, is put dual mode X Mode on all of their vehicles regardless of trim level, things like this may cause me not to purchase a 5th Subaru....

      Another thing they could easily do that is software oriented for a car with GPS technology is give us an altimeter so when we're in the mountains, we can tell the elevation. My Outback must have 4 or 5 compasses they could replace one of them with an elevation readout.

    Your review for the 2021 Sport cemented my decision to purchase one back in January 2021 when my Nissan Versa was falling apart, and I've loved it. Honestly, I don't envy much about the new version. The upgrades or changes are mostly unnecessary in my book. I love the StarTex, I think it is better than either standard fabric or leather. Mine show little wear even though my dog has tried his best to tear up the back row. I've put it through the ringer with water, mud, sand, dog, it feels great and doesn't heat up as much as leather in 90F weather. The 8" screen is fine. I'd rather have a smaller screen and have quick access to more physical buttons than the giant screens. The less time I need to look at the infotainment area, the better. The major upgrade I wish I had would be the wireless carplay and charger. The wired connection annoys the hell out of me. I've had a lot of issues with Android Auto disconnecting from physical movement on bumpy roads or when I go in and out of service in more remote areas.
    I've also put almost 52,000 miles on my 2021 Sport in 2.5 years, and a lot of that includes highway and mountain road driving. I regularly drive 2-4 hours to hike and camp most weekends. I've driven all over the Southeastern Appalachians on the stock tires, and I think they hold up really well on some tough dirt or rocky forest roads. I still have 7/32" tread on all 4 tires. They're holding up really well and I'm definitely sticking with the Geolanders when I need to buy new tires.

    We bought a 22 Crosstrek Sport 1 year ago after watching your reviews. I own a locked/lifted Jeep and a Powerwagon on 37"s, and this doesn't compete offroad. But I knew that!
    IF you buy this vehicle based on what it is, not what it isn't, you will be pretty happy.
    We needed an economy car that we can take down rough dirt roads. It has been great and actually better offroad than expected.
    It's nose is usually it's biggest limitation where we go. Lots of old desert mining roads with deep washouts across them.
    My biggest complaints are lack of available features with the Sport trim. It appears the adventure will resolve some of that.
    Agree on the turbo motor. Add lower gearing and room for more tire and take my money! I was willing to pay for a VW type R but it isn't offroad capable enough(and i couldn't actually find one).I see in the comments you have influenced many to buy a Subaru, and I hope they are listening. You converted us and another jeep friend bought an outback wilderness and loves it!

    I looked at the CrossTrek and liked it but it was too small for our needs, so we decided on a Forester Touring for myself.
    My Forester is the first vehicle I’ve ever owned that I don’t have to fold down the rear seat on the days that I need my wheelchair.
    This is Huge for me.
    My wife’s Outback has plenty of room for my wheelchair with the rear seats up, so I was so thankful that my Forester is perfect for me.

    I just got the 2024 Outback Wilderness and the front “skid plate” every reviewer says it has, is an absolute joke. It’s paper thin and bends with your hands. It takes up only the front tip of your bumper, with the rear being plastic. I went off road and it warped after the first rock. Upgraded to a REAL skid plate from RalliTek for engine and transmission and now it’s FAR more capable than factory.

    Those begging for a manual transmissions don't know that the starting ratios on the latest TR580 CVT are better than the physical 1st gear ratios of any manual transmission Subaru has ever offered. Unless equipped with a dual range gearbox, manual Subarus most often uses excessive wheelspin or momentum to get over obstacles vs going slower with the CVT. The outdated TR690 CVT found on turbo models also isnt as good as the newer TR580s, as they have a much higher stall speed which isn't ideal for off-road. That's also the reason why I do not care for a turbo Crosstrek; the crappier TR690 will no doubt be married to it. On the subject of turbos, they will surely add more heat and complexity. Why would anyone want to subject themselves to those kinds of issues on the trail where there isn't enough airflow to cool the engine/transmission, while carrying 500+ lbs of gear and a RTT? Tbh, all the Crosstrek needs is lower gearing. If a little more power is needed, the '24 BRZ engine would be good enough (224hp/186 lb/ft). That's almost equivalent to 2002 WRX horsepower figures.

    • @Creighzeemofo

      I would still take a manual over a cvt. Rebuild cost on a cvt is about 5K more than a traditional manual trans.

    • @octurbojoe
      @octurbojoe Před 9 měsíci

      @@Creighzeemofo Cost amd repairs aside, the manual still has a taller starting gear compared to the newer TR580. That is a fact that cannot be refuted.

    • @Creighzeemofo
      @Creighzeemofo Před 9 měsíci

      All automatics in general won't spin out like a manual would offroad. But keep in mind the manual crosstrek has a true power split of 50/50 through the transfer case. Most people do not know that even with the improved new x-modes on cvt it isn't the same, so manuals do perform differently. Either way a crosstrek is not a true offroad suv, it's more like a weekend niche vehicle. 5 grand more for a cvt rebuild compared to maybe a clutch replacement for 1K doesn't sell it for me.

    • @octurbojoe
      @octurbojoe Před 9 měsíci

      @@Creighzeemofo The manual Crosstrek does not have a true 50/50 split. It has a viscous center clutch system like any other modern Subaru transmission (including automatics other than the STI), which requires friction to spin all four wheels up to 50/50 front to rear, just by moving forward. They have a nominal bias towards the front before torque is sent to the rear; so no, the manual Crosstrek does not have a full-time 50/50 split like a 4WD. Being that the manual also has open differentials, 50/50 will be lost once past of least resistance occurs where the wheel in the air will continue spinning. Manual Crosstrek transmissions also have shorter final drive ratios (4.44) to make up for 2.0L's lack of torque, paired with a very taller starting ratio (3.818), which is why it needs to "spin out." Whereas the 2.5L equipped variants have taller final drive ratios (3.7) because they have more torque. Why did Subaru not pair the 2.5L with a manual is a question only they can (or can't) answer. Repair costs will vary. CVTs are relatively easy to tear down and rebuild for the mechanically inclined. Common failures come from heat due to lack of fluid servicing. However, the CVT design keeps improving by reconfiguring the forward/reverse drive mechanism on the TR580; something manual lovers don't know themselves. I myself favor manuals over autos. In fact, my '21 Crossttek Sport is my first personally-owned automatic car, ever, after nearly 30 years of driving. I can agree that Subaru's aren't off-road monsters or rock crawlers. However, adding a manual transmission to a Crosstrek/Forester/Outback, won't add any benefit to off-road performance unless the gear ratios are suitable for it. Subaru's current manual transmission choices aren't great to begin with, except the STI, which is for an entirely different application.

    Pretty disappointed with the "new model". It is more of an update at best, and prices have crept up to over 30k for the models with the 2.5L. I believe they have also decontented the Premium, and the all weather package is optional. They should have made the 2.5L standard and added a turbo or hybrid for the Sport and Limited trim. I own an Impreza, so am a Subaru fan, but the competition has caught up and maybe even passed them. I still think the Subaru AWD system is best in this class, but the Mazda CX-30 (2.5L standard, and powerful turbo only a few K more than Crosstrek Limited) and Kia Seltos SX (195 hp turbo, bose, 8 speed auto, navigation, very similar in price to upper level Crosstrek) are very strong value competition now. I would love to see you test the Seltos SX. (only negative about it is you have to but the SX to get adaptive cruise).
    Edit: they also need to add some sort of soft locking rear axle to the "Wilderness" models, ah la the Bronco Sport.

    I tend to buy cars used so I upgraded my 2014 Crosstrek Sport, a Canada-only trim at the time, to a 2021 Sport. It was quite the upgrade, but there are things I miss from the old car. I'm worried that a future upgrade will get away from what I love about the Crosstrek, its simplicity.

    Hey Ryan. I have a tried question for you. I own a 2023 Crosstrek PHEV and love it, but I want to get a full spare tire and carry it on a roof basket during my long trips and off road forays. What tire would you recommend that would cut it temporarily regardless of the time of year? I live in Québec where is can be 35-40c in summer and easily -35c in winter. Thanks!

      Is the hybrid not a tad heavy for off-roading? - How do you find it? Also Michelin Crossclimate seems to get good reviews as a genuine 4 seasons tire. I'm in Canada and run 2 sets of wheels with full winters for 6 months of the year LOL 😁

      @@Hoojammyflip I am not a hard off-roader, though Crosstreks are not made for rock crawling anyway. I have found it to be really smooth and capable in light off-roading honestly. It takes dips and rocks better than my Outdoor used to, since the suspension is a bit softer. Overall, I find it fantastic. But again I am doing light off-roading on trails to caves, remote snowboarding locations, etc.

    The '24 Crosstrek is still a good vehicle, but there are a number of cost-cutting measures that took place which in my opinion make it slightly less of a value than the previous Gen-2 Crosstrek. Specifically, the door panels, upper dash, and center console of the '24 are all lower rent than the previous Gen-2. Also, no more leather-wrapped steering wheel on the Premium trim. Many people are reporting that wireless connectivity causes laggy operation, and the wireless charging mostly works as phone heater and barely charges the phone. And the loss of many physical buttons and knobs means a less intuitive and less safe experience. In my view, there are only two substantive improvements with the '24 Crosstrek, and they are the new steering rack and the LED headlights. Most other changes on the '24 I think are either downgrades or a net gain of zero. But it remains a capable vehicle, so I'm glad to see that has stayed the same.

Fortunately, I drive very little at night except for lighted city streets and freeways. The prob that Subaru didnt solve is the hit of the oil gearbox. the cooler gearbox only in the widerness model.
    its a shame that are not put an oil cooler gearbox in all models. this coole can drop tmps by 20° C. its very importing for the CVT transmission. also there 2 thermostats that without this cooler damage more easly.
