    The new crosscrek shows that Subaru has listened to their customers. The car looks great and user friendly on the inside. I tow a ton with my 2016 and I'm thrilled that the wilderness has such a high towing capacity.

    • @godwhomismike
      @godwhomismike Před rokem +5

      It's too bad that they did not offer the Limited and Sport with a tow package, adding in a transmission cooler to be able to bump it up to 2500, leaving the Wilderness with 3500 because of the revised gearing.

    • @JG90984

    Absolutely love my 23 6MT. My only complaint was the unavailability of the 2.5L. But the trusty 2.0L does just fine. Gets up to speed reasonably, and gets decent millage. In the few months around 100 miles a day I've been averaging between 28 and 30 MPG. I've also driven it through Old Durr Road starting from the Selah side all the way through. And where I thought the little 2.0L would struggle it did with confidence. TCS and Brake Hold Assist were turned off. The new Generation looks great. Sad to see the Manual get canned but such is the way, and I really dislike those tablets. That Tablet alone was enough to make me not pursue the current Generation WRX. It's is just obnoxious. But if they bring back the Hatchback model I might reconsider. Big wishing right there. Overall new Gen looks nice, just not for me and my old ways. Gotta have my manual transmission. Excellent review, much enjoy your videos. Always entertaining and educational.

    As always, love your reviews. As someone else said, cant wait to see you test this on your course to give some comparison to similar vehicles. Still sort of disappointed they didnt upgrade the powertrain options in the new model. Should have made the 2.5L standard (like the CX-30) and made an option of a tweaked 2.5L or mild turbo. Also, the big screen looks nice, but would prefer physical buttons for the climate controls.

    • @edsmith9855
      @edsmith9855 Před rokem

      @@brendanmalloy-painting I have the 2.0L in an Impreza, and agree, it is not as bad as a lot of commenters or even testers make it out to be. That said, it does seem "flat" in certain situations, like light throttle application at moderate speeds. Accelerate harder, and you get sometimes more power than expected. Just makes it a bit difficult to drive smoothly. I think the extra torque of the 2.5L would help a lot. As I said above, other manufacturers have caught up, and offer better standard engines (Mazda) or more powerful options (Kia, Mazda, even Corolla Cross hybrid). I have pretty much given up seeing a turbo Crosstrek/Impreza, but am hoping there will be a more powerful hybrid soon with better low end torque. Competitors have also caught up in safety/driver assistance features and availability of AWD.

Hopefully, there are still vent holes at the front that allows someone to run a dashcam power cable. Unfortunately as all the advanced safety tech grows.... we're often losing that ability to better integrate dashcams, unless they pull a Tesla giving us the ability to put in a flash drive that utilizes the cars built in cams.

    Glad to see improvements on the Crosstrek, I like the way it looks especially in that Wilderness trim, which would be my only option if i decide to go "light camper" route. My wife had the first gen Crosstrek and was the first in our area to have one and I liked hers other than the more car like seating.
    Hopefully with things heating up in the "off road" crossover segment we see some improvements from older contenders (Jeep Renegade/Compass) as well as even more options entering the market with more than simple appearance packages (Im looking at you Kia and Chevy)
    These cars are great as they bridge a huge gap between highway and city friendly commuters and more serious off-roaders like Wranglers and Trucks. I want to see this segment grow and improve because they are awsome for daily life while still being able to handle more than a regular crossover.

    @Databyter Před 11 měsíci +1

    Something I am trying to spread the word about, because it is largely misunderstood, is that these Subaru's are ALWAYS in Xmode. The "Normal" in this version that has XM1 and XM2, could be thought of as being XM1.5. XM1, Dirt and Snow, is the strategic logic that allows for the least amount of wheel spin, at the expense sometimes, of momentum, and invasiveness, and MPG. XM2 is the strategic logic that is less invasive, allows for more wheel spin, and more momentum in deep mud and snow, where you want to keep moving to avoid getting stuck. It also uses the brake, but tries to not STOP the wheels. The "Normal" Mode, is the strategic logic that is on all of the time, and can be thought of as an Xmode as well, because it is the compromise between these two strategies. It allows for SOME momentum and SOME wheel slip, but not as much as XM2, and a lot more than XM1. And the truth is, that you want to keep your car in "Normal" most of the time, even offroad, because most of the time, it is the perfect place between these two extreme opposite torque vectoring strategies. If you have your vehicle in XM1 just because you are on a dirt track, you are putting wear on your brakes, adding noise and vibration to your ride, and reducing your MPG quite a bit. And it's absolutely un-necessary. I have a Wilderness Outback, and I have been in snow, mud, deep snow, deep mud, and deep sand. I am ALWAYS in Normal mode, even offroad. The only times (twice in several years) I have needed Xmode is when I truly could not get started from a stopped position, in either direction, and didn't want to dig a hole. I put it in XM1 and it got me right out. A few weeks ago, I was filling sandbags out at the beach, for the incoming tropical storm, and I drove right onto the beach, on about ten trips. On the last one a dog ran in front of the car and I had to hit the brakes, and it made me stuck. I used traction boards, and XM1 (because I had no momentum to preserve, I was trying to GET moving without digging in), and the Xmode and the boards got me right out on the first try. I was very impressed with the difference it made. But again, it is usually not needed OR WANTED. The Normal mode is going to be the right compromise for 99% of the situations you find yourself in, and is VERY effective offroad without any adjustment or modification in most cases. So if I can impart anything, it is, that you are ALWAYS in Xmode, and Subaru's controls and marketing may make it seem like you aren't but the truth is, XM1 and XM2 are simply extremes on both sides of the AWD torque vectoring that you are always in. There are some added features however, like Hill Descent control, that is activated in XM1, so for some really steep or sloppy conditions, go for it. But you don't NEED to. Your Subaru is capable out the door, in Normal mode. It is always Torque Vectoring as needed.

    Yep we know the the Sunaeu AWD is truly good. It's time for them to evolve their vehicles, there needs to be a vehicle with an approach angle of 25⁰ or better with a more aggressive wheel braking. I suggest 5hat the wilderness trim becomes its own vehicle to five us a true alternative to Broncos Jeeps and 4Runners etc.

      Yeah, that's a different class. Subaru's are soft roaders, those are off roaders. I don't think you're ever going to get a true off road vehicle that isn't a terrible street ride and piss poor fuel mileage. That's just the trade off you'll have to accept if you want more off road capability. For me the soft roader is perfect. I just want to be able to get down rough roads to more remote trailheads and campsites.

      This will never compete with the Body on Frame options, but it definitely competes right along with the Bronco Sport and Maverick Tremor from Ford, along with the Jeep Renegade and Compass from Jeep. Not rock crawlers, but definitely capable for lighter trails. I think the largest thing holding Subaru back is the CVT while Ford and Jeep both have traditional automatics. TFL had a Crosstrek years ago and tried to take it on Goldmine Hill and it just gave up to save it's transmission whereas the Renegade TrailHawk they had powered through. I think a rematch with the Wilderness Crosstrek is in order, but Subaru doesn't like TFL, probably for offroading and damaging press vehicles.

    I'm glad you like the Subie Infotainment system, because I do not. It feels dangerous when trying to use while driving. I have to take my eyes off the road and it does not feel intuitive, to me anyway. I honestly prefer the Mazda knob and screen position for safety and ease of use. The Subaru interior plastics have been very difficult for us to clean dirt and light scuff marks from, virtually impossible and they scratch easily along with the exterior paint. The Subaru cvt made me wonder if I was in a quarter mile dragster or would be driving Ms. Daisy from launch and I struggled to get anywhere near 400 miles from a tank of gas in a 21' Crosstrek. At 5'10" and 165 lbs. the Outback and Crosstrek were the most uncomfortable cars I have ever driven for more than 2-3 hours. Have had 3 Subies since 16', 2 Crosstreks and an Outback, all in premium trims and it will be some time before we get another. The awd and suspension was good, I will give them that, but driving the Outback felt like I was manuevering a large boat around corners and while the Crosstrek was sportier and more fun to drive, it was too small for our family of 4. We recently traded for a CX50 and Tacoma. First Mazda but it is so fun to drive and is currently getting way better mpg than the Crosstrek. Your off road tests of the CX50 proved the awd is much more capable than anything we will drive it on. Will use it for snowy days and dirt roads, have the 4x4 Tacoma for anything more. Just my opinion but thanks for all the reviews, I like seeing all the different vehicles and how you really put them to the test even though I do feel like you display a bias for certain vehicles over others. Thanks again, look forward to seeing more!

      Excellent commentary and very timely - I'm currently considering either a Crosstrek Sport (2024) or a CX-50. I realize they're pretty different and not direct competitors but they both check a lot of boxes for me for my needs. Haven't driven either yet, still researching and watching videos, etc. Did you get the turbo CX-50 or non-turbo model? The turbo is beyond my budget so I'm particularly interested in your comment about the better gas mileage on the Mazda vs Crosstrek.

    I wish I could have waited to the Crosstrek Wilderness, but I have to return my current Nissan lease by the beginning of September. Looks like I will be getting the Limited, and adding on a set of LP Adventure 17" Black wheels and a set of (lighter than most AT tires) Falken Wildpeak Trails, which should be far more than good enough for my dirt/muddy driveway, the dirt road to the boat (jet ski) launch, and snowy roads in the mountains. The Limited 2.5L should be just enough to tow my trailer (small utility trailer) that carries my 400 lb motorcycle and rarely my lawn tractor. I also have a small jet ski. I towed all of those before with my previous Crosstreks - a 2014 and a 2016, and they did it. I mean, it feels better towing them with my pickup, which the lease is ending, but it should manage.

    I feel it's incumbent upon high profile reviewers like yourself who Subaru pays attention to; to mention the utter absurdity to put 18" wheels on a vehicle like a CrossTrek. Low profile tires DO NOT BELONG on a pseudo purpose built off road vehicle. Are you listening Subaru? Don't put 18" wheels on a vehicle you promote as a capable part-time off road vehicle. The 17" wheels with the higher profile tires are far more suited and practical for this vehicle. If you insist on offering 18" wheels, than do just that, OFFER IT, don't shove it down our throats by forcing us to buy a certain trim level to get the 17's or 18's. 17 or 18 inch wheels/tires should be an option on ALL trim levels. Wow, I saw one of these in person yesterday on a local lot. I didn't think the gold/yellow accent stripes would bother me but they are absolutely hideous. I saw another review somewhere stating something to the effect that the cosmetics would appeal to 4 year old boys, and it's spot on. This thing looks like it came from the toy section at Walmart, and that extends to the interior as well. I get that Subaru was going for the younger demographic but this is a case of trying too hard. This is unfortunate because the Sport trim checks a lot of boxes for me. I absolutely don't want leather or the added expense of the Limited trim so that's not an option. I don't usually get too hung up on cosmetics/styling/appearance if the functionality is there but I think we all have our limits.
