His longevity is crazy. Being top 5 in scoring 20 years in a row is insane and he only missed playing in 57 regular season games in the NHL
Impressive but a completely different league. It’s not comparable to today’s game.

The fact he played ALL 80 games at that age and still had decent production is just insane.
What's so impressive to me, along with everything else, is that Howe was in the top five in points for 20 straight years! What an amazing legacy of consistency and durability.
Mr.Hockey, that's all that needs to be said, he was, is, and forever will be Mr.Hockey.

Why are we with restricting his stats to just the NHL? Over his professional career he has the most goals of anyone. GOAT.
@@Guitarzan8 Because NHL 'hates' WHA and does not want to take its stats and records into account. We of course would like to count them in but NHL does not.
It's the same with NBA. They don't count ABA records either which was also a thing in the 70s before the leagues emerged into one NBA. Just like some WHA teams joined NHL.
Also consider that for most of his career NHL seasons were 12 games shorter (22 his first three season) than they are now, in other words they were ~17% shorter. Assuming he didn’t suffer any significant injuries you could conservatively add around 13% to his combined NHL/WHL stats and you’d end up at roughly 1100 goals and 1560 assists for 2660 total points in the regular season alone as a reasonable baseline if he had always played 82-game seasons.
@@draheim90 Also consider at the time the worlds best hockey players were concentrated in 6 teams. See how his numbers exploded the first year of expansion hockey. Imagine if he had played his entire career in "expansion hockey" - the numbers would be unreal. He is - The Greatest of All Time. Gretzky says so. Orr says so. And I approve!
One fun fact missing. His last All Star game in 1980 was played in Detroit to open the Joe Louis Arena.

Thank you for doing this. I grew up 1/2 mile from Gordie Howe's Hockeyland Ice Arena in Saint Clair Shores, Michigan. I was lucky enough to attend his summer hockey school twice. One time my skate lace broke and Gordie picked me up and put me on the boards and worked on my laces then took me into his pro shop and laced me up with a pair of new laces. My Mom took a few polaroid shots of the event and it is truly one of my fondest memories from my childhood. He was a great man and a great hockey player...

Gordie's last goal was scored in Montreal during the playoffs. The fans gave him a long standing ovation despite scoring against the home team, The respect doesn't get any deeper than that. It was good to see the fans in Chicago give Ovi a similar response. Gordie was an incredible hockey player with an incredible record and most importantly, an incredible gentleman. God bless you Gordie.
I saw him in the last NHL year play the LA Kings. Kings HEAVY HITTER JP Kelly drills Gordie into then split in the boards where the Zamboni comes out so hard the boards open. Later in the game JP is coming down the wing and Gordie slams him right at the penalty box (there was no glass there in those days) and puts him right over the boards.
I didn't catch the name of the guy Caps radio were interviewing yesterday or the day before but he was adamant that Gordie Howe is the GOAT
I really feel as the years go by we actually start underestimating how good he really was and videos like this freshen the mind. We cannot ever discount Mr Hockey when discussing the greatest.

Gordie Howe was my Great Grandfather's favorite hockey player ever. He followed hockey since the original 6 so he watched his entire career unfold. He had met him multiple times, but his favorite was his signed picture with him from a couple months before Howe passed away. To have see Howe play in person was legendary to him, and his passing really upset him. Thank you for your continued work on the career videos, as this one really shows how legendary of a player Gordie Howe was even just in the NHL.

On top of being one the greatest hockey players of all time, he was also one of the most respected as well. If you talk to any pretty much anyone who ever had an interaction with Mr. Hockey off the ice - whether that person was an opponent, teammate, fan, reporter, etc. - they would tell you what a class act he was. That, in itself, puts him in rarified air - the only other players I've ever heard given the same compliment were Maurice Richard, Jean Beliveau, and Bobby Orr.
One of the most complete players ever. If I remember correctly Scotty Bowman said Gordie could shot the puck left or right.

One of my favorite stories is him going fishing with a preNHL Bobby Orr and telling him to look out for his elbows. lol
Great tribute to Mr. Hockey. To do what he did in his day is amazing. It still doesn’t lessen what Wayne and Alex have accomplished since then. 👍 to all 3 of these gentlemen.
I saw him play a game for the Detroit vipers in the 90s. It was amazing to see a legend play.

Gretzky and Bruce Mcnall tried to persuade him into playing one regular season game for the Kings in 90/91. Gretzky said he was convinced Gordie could do it . Gordie said no out of respect for the players in the league. Being 74 and all.

I WAS around in 1946 but I was unaware of a lot, including anything about hockey, except for my Dad who would ref for the semi pros. My fear of Shannon running out of magnets has now been calmed.
He will always be the greatest in my eyes.
My dad's childhood hero. He started playing 10 years before my dad was born and stopped when my dad was in college. Well, for Detroit at least.
From this Red Wings house of ours, we thank you for doing this video Shannon. Thank you for your work on this. Just amazing what he did at his age. A different level of toughness and bread of player. He would slaughter guys if he played in todays era.
Even though I wasn't alive during his era i'll always consider him one of my favourite players of all time. I've watched tons of re watchable games / highlights and documentaries about Gordie, I'm also reading his book at the moment. Much respect to him and the original six.
I believe that his WHA stats should be recognized by the NHL.

The last I heard is Alex Delvecchio, a forgotten player who played center on Howe's line. And had a hall of fame career, is still alive, at over 90 years of age in 2023.

...70 game schedule, he would've had at least 5 50 goal seasons with 12 extra games to work with each year.
One of the greatest players to ever play, I will contend that, Howe is still one of the greatest ever to play, in my top 2 all time, the guys who put up numbers, very rarely are a complete player. He was dominant throughout his career in only the later years did that slip somewhat, he was offensively superb, he was defensively great, and physically amazing.
I remember reading a book when I was 11 on Howe and about that injury. I thought it was impressive how he was able to come back and play.

Since I was a kid in the '50s and '60s listening to Foster Hewitt broadcasting NHL games on the radio, Gordie Howe has been my ultimate hockey hero. I know his life story inside out. Mr. Hockey is the Greatest Hockey Player Of All Time --- end of discussion. It's not just about goals and points and longevity. It's about who you are as a human being, what you represent as a role model with your family, to your sport as a supreme professional and example to all young players like Wayne Gretzky, and to your country as an outstanding ambassador of Canada known around the world. No matter how many points the Russian phenomenon makes over Gordie's record ---- and Wayne's---- Ovechkin is a total nobody in comparison to those two men when it comes to the important things that matter in the game of hockey, and life.
Gordie was my first love of Detroit I wore #9 in every sport I played. It was a different game back then a lot more fighting and Physical. Today is more speed and precision.
Howe was larger than life here in Detroit and beloved by everyone. During his last all star game when he was with Hartford, it was held in Detroit. Watch the video of him being announced in the opening lineup. That ovation I swear lasted at least 5 minutes. Every time he made an appearance the Joe erupted, and after his passing, the visitation line when he was laid in state in the Joe looked like it went on forever. Hell of a guy and yes, the best player to have played the game.
Oh, side note: I believe he played a shift or two in the late 90's in an actual IHL game for the Detroit Vipers. Try and find that jersey lol

What a career Gordie had. One of my favourite stories in all of sports is when he signed with the Aero’s to play with his boys. There is a great movie that came out about 10 years ago that tells the story. Thanks for the career retrospective Shannon
As much as I love the Great 8 and his achievements, it is a real shame that the Red Wings basically forced him to retire and lose a couple years before joining the WHA. If he stayed in the NHL from 1971-72 until his retirement in 1979-80, he could have scored 150 more goals in the NHL, maybe even hit 1000, along with retaining the games played record to match his unreal longevity.
What do you mean forced him to retire? He achieved everything he wanted, and as far as all records I’ve read, he was ready to give it up. Only reason he came back in the WHA was so he could play with his sons.
@@wesleythorne6657 I've always heard that the Wings management pressured him to retire after disputes about his salary and a wrist injury. I could be wrong though.

Fun fact, he only had two "Gordie Howe hat tricks" in his long and incredible career.
I don't normally subscribe to the notion of expansion diluting talent, but if you subscribe to it Howe's performance is all the more Ruthian in perspective. For the first two decades of his career, he played against the absolute best of the best in the game; and even post-1967 the level of competition was "less diluted" than during the careers of Ovechkin, Jagr, Lemeiux or even Gretzky.
Obviously expansion does dilute the talent. That's just the way it is. Gordie scored his first and only 100+ point season in the NHL at the age of 40 one year after the first expansion year when the league doubled in size. He also scored 40+ for the first time in 12 years that season.
@@dannycarlow8204 The 1967 NHL expansion was a weird exception though in that they literally doubled the league in size after four decades of relative stability in terms of competition level. No league short of the USFL in 1984 has been crazy enough to do that, and sure - in that case, talent was "diluted." But by the NHL standards of that time, only having six franchises didn't necessarily allow all the cream to rise to the proverbial top. I don't know what the 'magic number' of teams for any particular league may be in terms of maintaining on-ice/court/field talent quality is concerned; but I suspect in the case of a league that avoided expansion for decades only to double in size? Sure, there was going to be a backlash.
@@mactheknife7049 I honestly think that there are enough teams in all of the North American sports leagues. Expansion doesn't only dilute the competition, but fan bases as well. The more teams, the less fans each team will have as fans change allegiance to the brand new home teams.

An almost impossible-to-believe career. The level of sustained excellence.
Every guy who played against Howe mentions his elbows. He was a man you did not mess with if you knew what was good for you. I'm old enough to remember his later playing days in Detroit. My dad was a Leaf fan, but still respected what Howe represented.
When I was 6, my next door neighbors took me to see Gordie play the Chicago Blackhawks at Olympia Stadium. Wings lost but Gordie had a goal, assist and fight. From that moment 63 years ago on I have never been less than a dyed-in-the-wool Howe and Red Wings fan. He's the only sports star I've ever idolized or wanted to be, and the one time I met him he seemed the nicest, most humble and self effacing man one could meet. From the first moments on a frozen pond to my last senior game at 57, I wanted to be Gordie. Thanks for doing this Shannon. R.I.P. big guy.

Thanks for reminding everyone. Of "Mr Hockey"!! I grew up in Detroit in the 60's and 70's and spent many night watching Gordie at the Olympia. Not only was he a great player but a wonderful human being. He always had time for a handshake or autograph with a fan and I. Can never remember him being rude or in a bad mood. Geordie and the Howe family were great Ambassadors of the Game.

If you add those 12 games for the ~20 seasons before the seasons became longer that's around 240 games. That's like 3 full seasons so conservatively 90 goals and 270 points. Add on his wha points and he's at almost 1100 goals and like 2600 points. Absolutely insane numbers.

Great video and tribute to Mr. Hockey. Was lucky enough as a kid to meet him a couple times at or before Grand Rapids Griffins games.
I also find it interesting that aot of people just assume he was the Wings captain for a while, but it was short because he hated being the captain, he said he thought it was too much pressure and just wanted to focus on hockey.
My family didn't talk Hockey round the table...so these type of videos are spot on for me. Education and Entertainment rolled into one. Nice one Shannon.
You’ve got the guys who put up tons of points, you’ve got guys who live to score goals, you’ve got guys who play forever, championship winners, tough and fighters, great skaters, leaders, active in the players union, dirty players, gentlemanly players, etc.
And Gordie was one of those who excelled at all that (yes I’m aware the last two are an oxymoron, but he was gentlemanly with players, and then drive them into the boards)

Hockey Reference has a function called adjusted points where they do the math to estimate what a players totals would be in a season where 82 games were played (to compensate for earlier seasons that scheduled fewer) and an average of 6 goals were scored per game (to compensate for the 80's high scoring rates and the dead puck era's lower rates). It's a lot of fun to compare players from different eras and see how their totals change. I'd love to see you check it out and get your thoughts!
Gordie was my favorite hockey player, when I was a young kid back in Lethbridge, Alberta.
Was fortunate to meet him at an autograph signing at our Eaton’s store back in ‘64.
He could do it all. Score, pass, hit, fight! Mr. Hockey is the perfect moniker for him!!
He’s still mine. The best to ever play I don’t give a shit what anyone says. There is a lot of amazing players. But Gordie was and still is THE most complete player. He did it ALL

Let's not forget how well he played againt Keith Olberman in the ESPN Office Classic.
My great-uncle saw him play in Omaha; this is why my entire family is a Detroit family (only for hockey though). My g-uncle would tell about the games he saw in Omaha and he followed Mr. Hockey's career through newspapers and a few magazines. Probably a few tv games too.

I saw Gordie play in a game against the LA Kings in 1980. The Kings had a young guy named JP Kelly, who was a tough guy. He really smacked Gordie into the penalty box on a good hit. After the game, a TV guy asked Kelly how he felt about putting Gordie over the boards. Kelly kind of stammered and said, "I hit Gordie Howe??". He looked like he was going to cry.
The surprise for me here is out of legendary career, how few years he was Captain, I would have easily assumed over a decade before I saw this video.
I think there's more to some of the story even at this high level. Jack Adams was a bit of an a-hole. So, I wouldn't be surprised if Howe lost the captaincy over something petty like the whole Adams/Lindsay saga.

I only saw him play once on tv after he came back to the NHL in a game when the Leafs played the Whalers. I was too young to have watched him before he went to the WHA and they didn't show any WHA games on the stations I could get as a kid. I was so excited to see the game. Even though I had never seen him play I avidly read a lot of hockey books about the history of hockey in general and the NHL in particular and I knew he was a great player even at his age. I don't remember who won that game but I remember being excited to finally see him play.
I never realized how long his career was. Amazing

I watched a lot of Gordie Howe on TV as a kid growing up in the 50s & 60s. There was no such thing as a one timer or slap shot through most of those years. Gordie had a big advantage over other players due to his size and strength (Popeye forearms) plus being ambidextrous as well. I really enjoyed seeing him make passes that were so tricky it would fool his teammates too. Mark Howe could pass like that as well. They both were great to have on my team.
In 1972 I was 18 and grew up on the west side of Detroit. Me and a couple of buddies are crushing around on a Friday night when we stop in at the Winter wonderland rink on the west side of Detroit to see who was playing. We walked in to see it was just couple of Pee Wee teams so we were going turn around and head out when I noticed down at one of the rink was an older guy by himself watching the game at the glass but when I looked closer I saw it was Gordie Howe. It turned out one of the kids on one of the teams was Murray his youngest son. So me and buddies went over down where he was standing and stood next to him but pretending to be watching game because we were to scare to talk to him but then Gordie broke the ice by elbowing my buddy who was standing closest to him. We all got a good laugh and shook his hand. We said are goodbyes to him but when we got outside we realized we needed to get his autograph so we ran to the car to get a pen and paper and when we got back to the rink he is no longer around until we found him talking to the lady behind the counter in pro shop. They were in the middle of a conversation so we patiently waited with pen and paper in hand. The lady looked in our direction and saw the pen and paper in my hand and said I suppose you boys don’t want my autograph. I’m 70 years old now and I still have that autograph a great memory meeting Mr Howe. From one Gordie to another thanks for the memories Mr Howe.
After retiring from Wings, he took two years off. Came back and played till 50 in WHA/NHL... Scored over 50 goals total his final three years. WHA stats should count, Ovie would still be far behind Gordie...🤔
It would be cool to see his (and other players) stats adjusted - benched - to the avg goals scored per game in the season played.
I’ve done that for few select seasons and GHs numbers get very close to WGs.
