Yea that's a big one for sure. I'd say you could put Heatley on there too. I was at the first home game against the Sharks after the trade and the boobirds were out every time Heatley touched the puck.
That entire story was messed up! As a Sens fan I couldnt believe it!
In the end, the Sens are at a better place today because of these trades. Sure, it didn’t look like it at the time, it simply looked like Ottawa was just trading star players for picks or anything they could get for these 2 guys. Sens are going to be fun to watch this season!
I remember watching THG's coverage as it all happened, waiting to see where everyone would end up. Good times.
One of the funniest break ups was between Buffalo and Alex Mogilny . Mogilny said he HATED to fly and he wanted to be traded to a New York team or NJ or Philadelphia so he didnt have to fly a lot.
What does GM John Muckler do , he trades him to the team that flies the most ....the Vancouver Canucks ! 😁

Funny enough that Mogilny ended up getting with NJ and won a Cup with the Devils. I did not know about his distaste for flying, but apparently things worked out for him.
At this rate, in about 5 years, you could do an entire video on Vegas and ugly breakups with their players.

I agree, Fedorov couldnt get out of Detroit soon enough. Ive been watching the Wings since 1990, and i have a hard time forgiving Sergei for not wanting to be in Detroit, all the way back when he wouldnt sign a max contract with Detroit and was forced to match that offer.

Nice video. Regarding Blue Jackets, you can’t call Panarin a bad breakup since he was a UFA.
I believe that most Blue Jackets fans will say that Jeff Carter was the worst breakup in franchise history. He is still hated and booed every time he touches the puck at Nationwide.
If you look at the Jeff Carter trade tree, Columbus gave up a whole lot (Voracek, and picks that became Courtier and Cousins). Carter had a TERRIBLE attitude from day one and was traded at the trade deadline. He then went on to win two cups with LAK.
All the makings of a bad breakup.

Jeff Carter, however, is a different story. My grandma would say he could kiss her grits, my kids would say he can f**k off, and I would say that I hope he's vaguely nauseated every single minute of the rest of his life because it's what he deserves.
Yeah carter was definitely worse. With panarin, it sucked that he left but everyone was in the right. The jackets did their best to convince him, he had the right to choose where to go, and the fans had the right to still be sad about it. I’ll never be rooting for him to win but there’s no real animosity there
I remember a breakup-for-breakup trade. Let's go back to 1992...
Bruins at Jets. February 4. Eight minutes into the second period. Phil Housley gives Craig Janney a little tap on the wrist. Janney goes down like he's been shot. Five for slashing, game misconduct, one-game suspension. Janney plays on the ensuing power play. Had the Jets lost due to that (Final: 3-3), Janney might not have gotten out of Winnipeg Arena alive. Shortly thereafter, Harry Sinden *apologizes* for the dive.
Meanwhile, Adam Oates has been expressing displeasure at the size of his paycheque compared to the likes of Garth Butcher and Ron Sutter.
Here's the likely phone call...
Harry Sinden: Hey Ron, I hear that Oates is on the block.
Ron Caron: Yeah. You got a proposal?
Sinden: Janney has been behaving rather un-Bruin-like. How would you like him?
Caron: That's a little bit in your favour. Throw someone else in?
Sinden: Hm...how about Quintal?
Caron: Sounds good. Let's fax it in.

Chris Pronger’s breakup with St. Louis was forced on because of ownership and they got hosed. It wasn’t until a couple of years ago that the relationship was repaired.
I actually think Pronger leaving Edm is uglier than Gretzky - the Gretzky deal was always understood as a sale, and the Oilers won again 2 years later. I think the Pronger deal was felt as a rejection of the city - this might be very similar to the Gaudreau situation this week.
@@stevebloomer2920 Agree. There was never any bad feelings towards Pronger from St. Louis when he left. That was all on Bill Laurie's fire sale. (Why do Wal Mart heirs want to destroy St. Louis sports?)
Edmonton on the other hand was very ugly. Pronger is not a name you want to mention in that town even today.

Brendan Shanahan being traded for Chris Pronger was way worse
A lot of people also forget Pronger had knee injuries. And the sports teams were ( and probably still are NOT using laser for arthroscopic surgeries) , See Tarasenko. .. See Cardinals. It's crazy! I was a laser technician for ForTec medical. None of St.louis Dr's would bother learning the better way. All our business was done out of State. And neither the Cardinals or Blues at the time would change. Contract I assume. - brings to mind Tarasenko?

I was playing chel while listening and as soon as I heard Messier the hate instantly came out . I was a huge fan of him back in the day being born and bred in Edmonton and a diehard Oilers fan but what he did to Linden and the Canucks was despicable, he gutted that team.
I'm more appalled that there's a Messier award. I'd rather see a Jean Beliveau award for Leadership.

@@leftcoaster67 George Armstrong would be a worthy Candidate for the award too, he was a better Leader than Messier in every sense, he kept a Leaf team focused and had no ego at all, he worked like a dog no matter how old he got, and was up there as one of Toronto's best captains, him, Syl Apps, Hap Day, and Teeder Kennedy.
This is no knock on Beliveau by the way, he was a superb player and leader and have nothing but respect for him, I just think the Chief deserved his time in glory too.

As a jets fan the Dustin Byfuglien situation came out of nowhere and got really ugly. It’s too bad because I really loved his time as a jet.
As a Leaf fan, I was hoping they could talk Buff into signing with the Leafs after his falling out with the Jets. I loved the way he played. Not sure exactly what happened, just seemed he needed his personal space. Do you know why he fell out with the team?
@@willrobinson1671 It was a complicated issue about him having surgery without notifying the team and showing up to training camp overweight. I think he failed his physical. The trust just wasn't there after that.
that whole off season was brutal for the Jets defense. they went from one of the best defenses in the whole league to having half their defense corps being AHL'ers the next year.
Jeff Carter for Columbus. That whole situation was ugly. Some Jacket fans would say Jack Johnson and Adam Foote too but I don't seem them as ugly because one went to his original team to retire and the other one was trying to increase his value because his parents screwed him.
Which one was the one that retired with his old team
Yeah Columbus gave up a lot for Carter and he was done with them halfway through his first season. That trade basically made the Flyers contenders for a decade while Columbus fell back into mediocrity

Being from Buffalo, I would think that Eichel always had a case of Carey Price Syndrome.
When he is on his game, Eichel legitimately looks like a top 10 if not top 5 centerman in the league.
But when he's not? Brace for impact 'cause it's not pretty.
Also, his alleged cancerous persona in the locker room did not earn him any favors with the team near the end.
I don’t remember Panarin being a particularly ugly breakup. He just wanted to live and play in NYC and gave his all for the Jackets while under contract. Jeff Carter who apparently immediately treated the org, city, and teammates with contempt jumps out. It’s rare to have a player arrive and immediately make it clear he thinks he’s better than everyone else and won’t play for the team. Columbus lost Voracek, plus, plus to acquire Carter (the top center they’d never had) and his arrogance and unprofessionalism forced them to trade Carter for Jack Johnson who was at least from the Midwest and not so concerned about his 24/7 access to beaches. Adam Foote would be next. He’s notorious for bagging on the Jackets while captain and secretly instigating his acquisition back to Colorado - he had a private plane waiting to fly him to Denver. Columbus was so desperate for veteran leadership then and while one can understand Carter preferring to live on the beech and Foote wanting to go back to Colorado, it’s the way they handled it that was so low. Kristof Oliwa might be next. He got into a couple ugly fights with then captain Lyle Odelin and was apparently an unhinged unpleasant presence. As soon as he was shipped out, the Jackets new they needed a legit enforcer if nothing else to absorb some of his dirty play and get him off the ice. Thus, the NHL career of a very green Jody Shelley began.
Good thing for Columbus. Shelley was not only a match for Oliwa, he of course began a fan-favorite, and is now a sold color guy who’s gotten some national gigs. He’s also regarded as a really nice, down to earth human being.
Even Rick Nash was subject to some passing ire from fans after he finally asked to be traded. But it’s hard to blame him: he was a great offensive power forward, but was probably miscast as captain at too young an age and given too little support, both in talent and leadership. But no one really thought Nash was a bad guy. It was clear that with some time he’d be welcomed back to the organization with open arms.

I'm pretty sure Nik Foligno stated as much publicly.

We all knew that Bob and Bread were gone as soon as they hit UFA because we weren't giving Bob the contract he wanted and Bread was very very very clear about wanting to own a house with a garage. I'm not personally mad at either of them, though I'd say I'm definitely a little more salty at one of them, and I'm also not mad at Jarmo for not moving them and going all in instead - that sweep against the Lightning was worth it, and it's not like we've had to wait that long to build something else that we're all hopeful about.

The Kovalchuk situation was such a dumpster fire where everyone looked bad, and was one of the moments that caused me to sour on Lou Lamarello.
The Roy breakup was perhaps the most shocking bust up I'd seen in sports. Tremblay had spent years from the pundits desk saying Roy couldn't tie Dryden's skates. And then he deliberately set about trying to prove himself right. How management ever could have thought him a good idea still escapes me.
As far as the Duchene trade goes, at least you didn't say Joe Sakic should be fired, like a certain CZcams pundit...

I believe that Jagr leaving Pittsburgh had more to do with money than anything. The Penguins were struggling with cash and could not afford him anymore. There may have been some tension internally with him, but definitely money was a big player.
The only reason why the pens took the caps deal is because it included $5m+ and they took that $ and bought the land PPG Paints arena sits on. There was some deals on the table that had great players involved but none had that much $ going back.

I don't recall how ugly it was, but when Scotty Bowman took over in Buffalo, one of his first moves was to break up the French Connection line, trading Rene Robert to Colorado for John Van Boxmeer (?) of all people. For the rest of his life Rene had nothing good to say about Scotty Bowman and always said that trade was the reason the Sabres never won a Stanley Cup.
Getting out of that Kovalchuk contract was a blessing for the Devils. They'd be in even worse shape now with that on the books.
Seriously I don't get devils fans who are still mad about the retirement. That contract would still be active if he didn't retire.
Sundin leaving the Leafs was HILARIOUS and showed exactly how he felt about the franchise. Refused to be a trade deadline rental, became UFA, sat out half the next season, then signed in Vancouver. Classic.
How he felt about the franchise? He played with the Leafs for 13 seasons. He didn't want to be a trade deadline rental (Like you stated), the Leafs office asking for him to leave for something in return, was the true slap in the face to Sundin.
He's on Legends Row in Toronto and had his jersey number retired, Leafs nation loves him, no true harm done.
Sundin wanted to play for the leafs. he wanted to retire as a leaf, he wanted to continue goin for a cup with the leafs. the leafs decided they wanted to rebuild or retool without him. they made it clear they had no future plans with him. they asked him multiple times to waive his no trade clause even after he stated he wanted to retire as a leaf.
so he didnt want to retire, but he didnt want to play for anyone else other than the leafs, but the leafs made it clear they wanted to move on from him.
so he took time to decide if he wanted to keep playing for someone else or just retire.
eventually he decided he wanted to have another go, and if the leafs didnt want him he was gonna go where he thought he had the best chance to win.
so he went to Van, who at the time was a good team and that wasnt a bad choice. it didnt work out for him, but it doesnt work out for a lot of players at the end of their careers IE Joe Thornton or Jerome Iginla.
Keep in mind when Sundin finally did sign with Vancouver, he turned down their original offer and signed for less money so they would have more room financially to help ad to the team down the stretch.
Sundin did nothing wrong nor did he slight the leafs in any way.
Johnathon Toews more or less had a similar situation with the blackhawks.
Chicago said they wanted to REBUILD, Toews said he wanted nothing to do with it, he wanted to take one more run at a cup.
the leafs scenario with Sundin was very similar to the blackhawks and Toews recently. neither team had success, but the difference is the blackhawks showed loyalty to their decade long captain and now there will likely not be any sour grapes between the two parties.
Dadonov is another one that comes to mind. I feel so bad for the guy like imagine not being wanted by your team but you’re forced back cuz of a technicality and then shipped off anyway. That might be the start of more players including Vegas in their no trade lists
I still have my Adam Oates Bruins puck+card autograph combo as a kid. My dad was pissed at that trade because he wanted it to work out, but knew it couldn't and it was my first real understanding of the business side.

While I know what you mean (Roy last game in MTL), Roy’s official last game, was getting beat in the playoffs by Minnesota in 2003. lol
It shows how loyal Detroit is to its players when you have to go back 70 years to list an 'ugly breakups' player, but Lindsay and Detroit were never on bad terms. He was traded by an autocratic Jack Adams to Chicago, on the orders of James Norris and the fans knew it was punishment for organizing the players. Norris and Adams were the hated ones for their union busting and mismanagement. Ted came back to Detroit after 4 years retirement in '64 to finish his career with the Wings and the league (Smythe & Ballard) was mad at him for organizing and denied him a comeback on his terms. Ted was an excellent broadcaster, competent GM, coach, fan favorite, all-around team supporter and tireless fundraiser for charitable causes, especially autism, the rest of his life, and his number 7 will be in the rafters as long as the Wings exist. The man was more than a stud, he was a pioneer to whom every player owes thanks. The documentary "Net Worth" shows the struggles players went through to establish their bargaining rights.
Federov comes to mind of tension. But can't really think of others. That said Feds 91 needs to be in the rafters. Just finally heal it.

The Kovalchuk situation was so weird. As a Flyers fan, I actually felt bad for the Devils. They even let Zach Parise walk so they could afford Kovalchuk. It was an unbelievably bad situation for NJ. And at the same time, I was a big Kovalchuk fan until this happened.

The Devils did not let Parise walk, regardless of what he said the whole season, Devils fans knew he wanted to go home to Minnesota to play. he was never staying in NJ

Winnipeg: Kane and the tracksuit, and also Big Buf. Another Lightning breakup: Drouin. Canucks and Luongo also, not just Bure and Messier. Leafs: Kessel, Phaneuf, Larry Murphy.
An underrated ugly breakup was Markov in Montreal. He wanted two years. Montreal was only offering one. He would return to Russia and retire without fanfare

Yashin's final year in Ottawa was fun to watch. Every time he'd score at home, the crowd would cheer (because the Sens scored), then they'd realize who had actually scored the goal (the guy who sat out the entire previous season), and immediately switch to booing.
Lots of bits here I didn't know. As a long time NHL fan from the UK it was much harder back in the early 2000s to watch hockey or get news about it.
Really interesting about the Ted Lindsay stuff, I didn't know any of that. (Should have a sub list called the Hockey Historian :) )
I think theres already a comment but I remember the Sundin breakup being a big one at the time. The fans didn't necissarily blame him as he wanted to stay a Leaf but he got upset at management tryin to trade him.

It seems like we can get mad at players for leaving pretty much regardless of reason. Like ppl mad at Gaudreau right now for taking less money to go to Columbus asking why not go for money, but then be mad at some other guy who leaves a team only for more money, calling him selfish. This just isnt a sport you can get too attached to players in. Thats a lesson i had to learn way back when i was a kid when Bure left Vancouver. That Roy stuff tho, thats a completely different beast. U probably never see anything like that ever again in your life.

For a fairly recent one, I often think back to Krug in Boston. It was obvious he wanted out, despite managements best efforts, and when he DID leave, he went to the team they had LOST to in the finals a short time before. Still here Boston fans local to me cursing his name

Speaking as a lifelong Flyers fan I can tell you that there were no winners in the Lindros/Flyers drama. For starters, his parents were thorns in Clarke's side since day 1. #2, the issue with Lindros always being hurt is 100% true. He never played a full season. Never got close to playing a full season. The closest he came was only missing 2 games in the shortened season of 1994-95. I'm convinced that if he was healthy in 1999-2000 the Flyers moonwalk their way to the Cup but sadly the season ended choking away a 3-1 series lead and Eric laid out on the ice. That was his last moment as a Flyer. Now, the good news is that the team and Lindros reconciled and he's in the Flyers hall of fame and even has his number retired. If we're counting coaches the way Fred Shero left the Flyers has to be up there.
I'd argue Heatley over Yashin for ugly Sens exit. Everything about Yashin is correct but we still flipped him for Chara and the pick that became Spezza so I forgave him as he struggled in Long Island. Heatley can still go step on a Lego

The Sundin exit from Toronto looked like it was going to get ugly. But the guy is too classy and humble for people to have stayed mad at him.
His number got retired pretty quickly after he retired.
I'm glad it didn't end up being tainted. But I do wish he would have stuck around and or the Leafs offering him a contract after his year in Vancouver.

That trade to Anaheim, Dustin Penner and a 1st round pick, would not have been the game changer for the leafs during the Kessel era. That team still would have blown.
They should have signed him to a 1 year deal after his year in Vancouver, to mentor and teach the young guys on the team and so he could retire as a Leaf.

@@ThexSleepingDragon he wanted to play one more year and retire a leaf. He didn't want to be a rental player so He was upset the leafs wanted to trade him. He was a life long Canadian hockey player being a nordique and maple leaf so he wanted to stay in Canada and play on the western conference to avoid a eastern conference conflict. I'm sure the sedin brothers played some part.
Gretzky initially wanted to go to Detroit if memory serves... I hate that as a wings fan, but I totally agree that Gretzky going to LA was truly good for the sport of hockey.
Gretzky brought that up during one of the TNT intermissions during a game. His father talked him out of it because Detroit had such a history already and wanted Wayne to make his own history with a team that hadn't had much success.
Yeah I think I heard at one point Gretzky said he was interested in going to Anaheim to play with salanne and kariya. Apparently Anaheim never even called him. So I feel your pain lol

Hoffman/Karlsson & Ottawa - while don’t think anyone ever resented the players instead blaming management, the whole thing was a mess.
Fedorov & Detroit - wasn’t the rumour that the was a contract in place and then Detroit tried to change it at the last second?
Pronger and Edm - most of the animosity went to his wife but a lot of hurt fans.
Dubois & Columbus - though way things are going he’s going to have a few teams with this😅
Richards & LA - seemed LA jumped on an excuse to shed salary getting the NHLPA involved.

I don't think it's on the same level, but Parise and Suter are not looked upon fondly in Minnesota anymore. Bill Guerin giving them the boot to protect Dumba from expansion and build a better culture was pretty great knowing that they were seen as locker room cancers.

The Hoffman/Karlson situation in Ottawa was a crazy one.
Blues letting Perron walk is going over like a lead balloon here in St. Louis. The man has came back twice and done nothing but support the community and speak highly of it just to not get an official offer after Armstrong publicly claimed the intention was to keep him. I understand business is business but he's still producing well over $4mil.
Armstrong is the king of heartless moves. It seems every two years we lose a heart and soul guy like Backes, Oshie, Petro, Perron.

For Detroit, Sergei Fedorov because there's still hard feelings about the way he left with the Ilitch family in that they still haven't retired his #91 jersey. I know with some other players they give the not in the HOF excuse, but can't say that with Fedorov.

I’m a isles fan. I’m over the Tavares thing now due to our success and how his only playoff series win to this day was with us. But idk how people thought we didn’t have a right to be mad. He committed to coming back and and requested to not be traded at the 2018 deadline. At the time he was a top 10 player, we could’ve gotten a random for selling him to a contender as a rental. But his lies felt so much worse due to his position in our franchise. He was our longest tenured captain in decades and prob was the only reason the isles didn’t go under and were forced to sell the franchise and relocate. In management he was treated as a franchise player. He got whatever he wanted. Before his final season here he requested a new coach, ownership, and arena and we did it all but he still left. Not only did we get what he wanted but we got billionaire owners, hired the best active coach in the league, bought a 3+ billion dollar arena, signed a hof gm. We went above and beyond just to keep him happy. Also barzy won Calder and beau was promising that year so there was clearly a younger core developing while our older core still had time. He was everything to us and left like it was nothing in such a classless way.
Only upside to him leaving in my head is how he’s played since he left. Imagine we payed him that 11x8 and he started playing like he has the past 3 years. He’s spreading falling off 4 yrs into his deal. Imagine how bad that 7th and 8th year would’ve been for us. Also if he gave him 11, there would be no Sorokin or pulock extension.
I think the message that Islanders fans had the "right to be mad" was lost when they brought a whole new meaning to the phrase "trash fan base." We watched children giving JT the finger on national TV, it was an absolute embarrassment of epic proportions, the entire meltdown just made the fan base look fragile & unglued.

But if I’m being honest It’s not the first time or the worst time this kind of treatment was given to player happened, maybe the first time in hockey but in the nba, Cleveland was worse when lebron left the first time, kyrie with Boston, and okc along with the entire nba went apeshit when Durant left for golden state. Look at all of the instances across every sport when a visiting player gets hurt and the home fans cheer. in 2002 a father and son ran onto the field in the middle of an mlb game and jumped a first base coach for the royals. I mean look at hockey alone, Vancouver literally threw a riot when they lost the cup, ON 2 SEPARATE OCCASIONS. Bruins and rangers players got into fist fights with fans. It may be unfortunate that it’s a fact, but far worse things have been done to athletes, team members and people due to a sport. It doesn’t excuse what we did to jt but it could’ve been far worse and I’m happy we only flipped him off, held signs and chanted at him.

As a Bluejacket fan, Panarin leaving was something we expected. The worst for me is Jeff Carter with Dubois a close second.
I thought that THG could have used Evander Kane leaving the Winnipeg Jets as a better example of an ugly breakup. There was a lot more controversy surrounding the player at that time, plus what his teammates were saying about him too just made the entire ordeal sound nasty.
I wasn't watching much hockey back then but I remember this being all over Winnipeg media.
Trust me, his breakup with the Sharks was nastier.
