  • Dave2D review of the 2018 Dell XPS 15 9570. The i9-8950HK is a beast but the thermal limitations of the chassis are still here.
    XPS 15 - amzn.to/2Jozmvx
    Like the new MacBook Pro, not much has changed aesthetically, The new 4k display panel is a little brighter. Awesome for content creation. Fortnite and other moderately demanding games run at a good frame rate on the GTX 1050 Ti but keep in mind visuals are capped at 60 FPS because of the screen. The 2018 XPS 15 is still an excellent laptop for content creation but the thermal design of the laptop needs to be improved.

      macbooks aren't powerful. they're overpriced to hell and back for their performance. this manages to give you the performance you'd need at a price that isn't ridiculous for its shape. of course a thick gaming laptop will have better specs at a possibly cheaper price. this is pretty much the jack of all trades, decent price for its form factor, performance and looks. macbooks only have one of those: looks.

It would be awesome if you could do a comparison video of the two, comparing render times in premiere and other applications like After Effects. Also, since both seem to have the thermal issues, which one throttles more and which one performs better under heavy load? I'm looking to get a new laptop and I want to make the right investment. I'm not a gamer, I'm a coder who uses all operating systems from Linux to Windows to Mac OS. My workflow is all Adobe related and Web Development. I'm also wondering how the trackpads of the XPS compares to the Mac. Thanks.

    Glad I found a review talking about the thermal issues: My Dell XPS 15 9560 battery ACTUALLY CAUGHT ON FIRE! It was still under waranty and I had even bought extra service. It's been a month now and Dell is still working on giving me a new one, they confirmed I will recieve a 9570. I'm feared to death of these computers. I just got home and was very lucky otherwise my house would have been on fire. The laptop wasn't charging and wasn't even turned on at that moment. I had been using it intensly for work that day but it had been turned off for around 2 hours already...

      Battery failure and thermal issues aren't likely related. Lithium is volatile and if there are flaws it can melt down. The throttling issue means the computer is actually cooling itself by reducing performance, not having runaway heat.

      Reezk Hosni gaming laptops are very good for this purpose, or even a 500$ normal laptop with an i5-8250U/i7-8550U & mx150 is Good
      The higher range would be i5-8300H/i7-8550U + gtx 1050
      If you want something more powerful the 8550U + 1050ti which costs 800$
      The best thing that would run revit, cad , etc would be i7-8750H + 1050ti or 1060
      With 1060 its about 1200$
      Howevrr Cad is really light and a 500$ laptop would run it perfectly for years to come

    • @rbaleksandar
      @rbaleksandar Před 5 lety +3

      @@MrOmarMoustafa It depends on which CAD software you are using and whether you do more GPU- or CPU-intensive stuff. Some software products (CAD, etc.) run better with Quadro and Xeon, other run better with your standard CPU and GPU series. Of course the price difference between a decent gaming notebook and a mobile workstation is definitely noticeable. I would first check what the software, that is used, runs best on and then pick the mobile solution accordingly.
      A 1050ti is enough until you decide to do some 3D rendering. Then you are screwed. There is a difference between the requirements AutoCAD and for example SolidWorks have.

    Good review! I think something often ignored in reviews is the fact that there are people who need dedicated graphics cards aside from gamers! The thermal throttling had me worried about buying the 9570 but this actually perfectly suits my needs for a mobile CAD/ render/ print media machine. 4k screen and battery life are both brilliant and all my architectural software runs smoothly without any throttling issues that I've noticed. I really couldn't find anything else comparable in the market since anything as powerful was a 'gaming' laptop with enormous sizes and/or disappointing screens and anything with a nice screen and size had disappointing graphics. It's not perfect. I have found the speakers to be disappointing, with a bug that forces me to restart frequently to get sound to switch back on, there's a squeaky spacebar, and I've even had a few system hangs over the 5mo I've had it. But overall, I'm happy with the purchase.

    I think an important concept you brought up is: THIS IS NOT A GAMING LAPTOP. Can you play games on it, sure with limitations.
    But for those of us who use it for a work machine, I think the thermal throttling ceases to be a concern for the most part.
    For what it's made for, it's the best laptop I can find after many hours of laptops.

    Hi Dave,
    I bought a 9570 (before this video came out) and it arrived a few days ago. I've had crackling in the speakers, and judging by other forums, many people have had the same problem. Have you had any experience with this through any of your XPS laptops? Would love to hear your thoughts. Dell have offered a replacement, but others have done that and the problems persisted. I've updated the drivers (as far as I know). It's a beautiful machine, this problem is really letting it down!

      ikdekker I ended up buying the top spec one (i9, 32gb ram, 1TB SSD) and it’s a beautiful machine. However I’ve had some thermal throttling and also an issue with the speakers which dell is looking to repair (apparently by replacing the motherboard). So once they visit and look over it, I’ll get them to check over everything I’ve had problems with and address them, which I think is mostly software issues.

    • @ikdekker
      @ikdekker Před 6 lety +2

      Toby Barnhill customer support seems to be good. However, many reviews on the Dell site (www.dell.com/en-us/shop/dell-laptops/xps-15/spd/xps-15-9570-laptop) have several different issues. As it stands, 67 one stars, and 330 5 stars. Seems like it's mostly a good product, but for the price it's at, I don't want to have to be lucky.

    • @tobybarnhill7693
      @tobybarnhill7693 Před 6 lety +1

      ikdekker you’re 100% right. The service is really good (not as good as Apple, but better than anywhere else). The fact that they get a technician to come to YOU rather than you have to go to them is really nice of them. They’re happy to give me a replacement but I’ve said I’d rather them just fix the current one as chances are, there would be a reoccurrence of the same issue. If this doesn’t work out I’ll be moving back to Apple as XPS is the best looking and best performing for its size and body. I’d consider Razer but they’re customer service reviews aren’t convincing enough. Anything else looks cheap or too bulky with the same specs.

    • @clintonhendry8967
      @clintonhendry8967 Před 5 lety

      I had the same problem. I fixed it by downloading the audio driver from the dell website. It was different than the one that Windows 10 installed automatically, and it got rid of the crackling issue. I forget the one I had before, but the one I have installed now is: 6.0.1.8454
      www.dell.com/support/home/ca/en/cadhs1/product-support/product/xps-15-9570-laptop/drivers
      My current issue is the space-bar squeak. It's total bullshit. The only thing I've found on how to fix it (besides a youtube video that involved Vaseline) is a reddit guy that says it'll go away one day.

    There are people (businessmen and students) who travel a lot that need a decent laptop which can handle moderate work load without the weight of a luggage. Most importantly it has to not look like a flashy UFO when you have to present in a conference.
    The only downside of this laptop on that usage is the camera angle.
    If you are trying to play Tomb Raider with maximum settings on this laptop, you are looking at the wrong market.

    This is an amazing laptop. I have repasted and undervolted it. It was still running a bit hot during gaming so, I have decided to disable turbo boost while I game. Now gaming and cpu and gpu are running in mid 70s. No more throttling issues. I recommend disabling turbo boost for anyone doing heavy gaming, as it reduced my temps by 10 degrees.

      What kind of games do you play? I’ve had mine since August and I’ve been playing games like mk11 and borderlands on like medium settings and it doesn’t get insanely hot but I’d like it to be better. What do you mean by disabling turbo boost?

    • @abdifatahartan9034
      @abdifatahartan9034 Před 4 lety +1

      In the BIOS there is an option called Intel Turbo Boost. Turning this setting off will keep the CPU clock speed at base clock. However I have found that it can reduce the temps by 5-10C. There is also an app in Windows called Throttle stop, this can also be used to do it while the device is switched on.

    • @gumott
      @gumott Před 3 lety +1

The reason I got it is because I used to have the 2017 razer blade, but I brought it to the Microsoft store for them to fix it because of battery bulge (I didn't want to end the warranty by opening up the bottom). They gave me a 100 percent refund of $2100 and being rushed to buy a computer before they changed their minds, I bought this. It seems very good as of now. I'm headed to school, and I was a little embarrassed with the blade and its fans. For a back to school device capable of playing games, I see this as the computer I should have had since the start. Undervolted my XPS 9550 last year and it runs like a beast. It's still otherwise perfect.

      Kevin Batts wth. I'm a noob I guess. Can a rookie like me learn how to do this on CZcams and undervolt my XPS 15? Is complicated? Any things to worry about?

      @@malcolm4458 I think you can find some good videos on youtube on the subject, there's no risk. Use IntelXTU program rather than throttlestop, it's much easier. You will get some blue screens, that's all. Have patience and you'll be fine.

      light gaming it more than ok with that PC. If you are a real gamer, you don't need XPS

      Hari Seldon but we care about the experience with good materials, best aesthetics and thin & light powerful experience. Other gaming laptop are ugly. Now I know you're gonna say razer but it's not as perfect as xps like in the video. In my opinion, in terms of built, looks and user interface with the track pad and keyboard. A good gaming laptop has to start as being a good laptop which is long battery life, superior track pad and keyboard, user interface, etc.... which is why apple MacBook pro is still the king despite its high price and mediocore GPU redeon. Just like good gaming headphones, have to start by being good headphones. In fact, most gaming hardware looks good.

      I agree with u dude. I will just pay attention to the difference between casual gamer and not. If someone is a casual gamer, he does not need any powerful GPU and he will take care of aesthetics and he will choose xps among the others. But a gamer does not care of appearance as long as the GPU is good, minimum thermal throttling and good refresh rate are ok.

    That's a brilliant and honest review. Thanks. Any suggestion for a slick portable Laptop to be used for Photo & light Video Editing? XPS/Surface/Mac/Zbook/Thinkpad? we are inclined to a better look & build.

      How is a device that thermal throttles excellent for productivity? Gaming is lightweight compared to rendering in Premiere and such.

      bariq harb Can't agree. It looks different (being thin and light doesn't make the same), it has got ports, a 4k screen, better keyboard and is priced right.

    • @JonathanGS
      @JonathanGS Před 6 lety +9

      forza1sra not true. Gaming uses both cpu and gpu (of course mostly gpu) and because of shared heatpipes, that means lots of heat. But rendering is more of cpu intensive task. Still gets pretty hot, but probably not quite as much as gaming
