- Dave2D review of the 2019 Dell XPS 15 7590 with an OLED. The i9-9980HK is a beast but the thermal limitations of the chassis are still here.
XPS 15 - amzn.to/2OH60QJ
The new OLED 4k display panel is VERY bright and colorful. Awesome for content creation. Overwatch and other moderately demanding games run at a good frame rate on the GTX 1650. The 2019 XPS 15 is still an excellent laptop for content creation but the thermal design of the laptop holds it back

XPS 15 one of the game changers of the industry. It's on it's last legs now but it's still REALLY good for some users. Would you use this?
Only if it's cheap
I considered getting one but I went with the 2019 G7 with a i7 9750h and 2080 Max Q. Great work.

" game changers" wow the irony
What bios? Was it updated? There are important issues to be fixed with it

@@ryanb1374 I agree that teacher education is often perceived as a soft option. However, not all students admitted to teacher education have a burning desire to be a teacher. In some cases, a student isn't sure what they want to do, but they definitely want a degree... so they apply for a few courses, hoping to get in to at least one, despite their low year 12 marks.
Teacher education is sometimes considered 'the degree of last resort'. It might be the third and least attractive course that they apply for, but with the lowest bar to entry, a student with poor marks might just get a place. In a year where the admission score is lowered, a group of students who normally would not have gone to university are allowed to start a teacher education course. It's not that more students want to be teacher, but that the ones applying to a teaching degree as their "last resort" option actually get a place.

I found your channel on one of the first xps 13 reviews, and i got one cause of you. Still lovin it 4 years later.
Been looking at getting an XPS 15, was just waiting for this review to come out
Very intelligent commentary as, unlike many other XPS 15 reviews, it does drill down on the weaknesses. The XPS 15 is lovely, but is has grown complacent.
Let's be honest, 4 years in the tech industry is a decade in normal time.
It really is. Internals might be good but the exterior is no longer appealing.
Please, review the ThinkPad Carbon X1 gen 7. I'd love to know your thoughts about it!

That gaming laptop performs about as well as a $200 refurb desktop that I tossed together for a kid.
Throttling and stutters are not good. It should be tuned from the factory.
Add a 3.4ghz Phenom II X4 with 16GB of DDR3 RAM and a GTX 1050 TI, 240GB SSD into the mix. I'd be interested in seeing how it compares for games. I have a feeling a $200 crapbox would give it a run for its money in games thanks to no throttling.

Make sure you upgrade to BIOS v1.2.3 - massive difference for gaming. Undervolting is very easy with TS (do not use XTU as it causes sleep issues).
I played a bit APEX and getting stable operation over longer period of time, no issues.
I personally love how quiet the fans are when in low CPU tasks and when load is high the noise is actually not bad at all. Also I went for UHD over OLED for better control of screen color profiles.
The intro animation alone is worth a like. Always fresh and interesting

Yeah please.... And a comparison bw dell and Lenovo would be super duper awesome.
@@xarana I don't get the point of all these devices. I got the Yoga 720 15 inch and it's mostly the same. Performance is fine but when I try to game with it I have to cool down my device with extra ventilation and then it doesn't stutter/throttle. It's a 3 year old device now and nothing has changed. Only the connectivity could have been better (hdmi and 1 more thunderbolt 3 would have been nice). The 1650 is between 15 and 20% better than 1050 ti max q but with throttleing that doesn't matter that much anymore. What I like about the 720 is that you can switch easily to a bigger SSD or RAM.
i got the X1 extreme and returned it.
1. the screen choice for me (so IMHO) is crucial. they let you choose a dim 300 nits fhd or a 400 nits 4k with touch. they also claim they are both antiglare: the 4k is NOT anti glare (i mean, i expected that), but that's not thr prob.
i think 400 nits is the minimum for working nicely in a well lit environment. i thought i could scale to fhd the 4k and retain the 400 nits. bad choice, because windows is absolute crap at rescaling, everything was blurry-er than my old not even fhd pc.
why not keeping 4k? 4k on a 15" device is useless. yes you can notice but our eyes are fine at fhd, crisp but not out-of-reality crisp. 4k meant the fan ran more (more of this) and the gpu was being demanded more, for something not necessary.
more heat = less durability.
2. tha fan ramping profile is terrible (keep in mind the 4k). the x1 stays quiet as long as it can then ramps up the fan for a quick cooling and the returns silent. if you play with it, fine: the fans will stay on after short delay. for everything elese they will go up-down-up-down. extremely annoying.
3. i didnt find the keyboard that orgasmic as everyone say. 1 key was badly designed too.
i really liked the 2 ssd option, the esthetics, the slightly more I/O and the weird chio card slot which i use for some state-related things like healthcare etc...
i confronted it directly to an xps: i liked the screen more (400nits fhd almost anti glare) the keyboard and weight, which at that time was like 100 and something gram less. for the rest it was the same: i'll get an xps.
hope it helps!
@@stephenvoncrven4319 Have you got Gen 2 or the 2018 model? Because current X1 extreme offers FHD and 4k 500 nits both. I also was looking to get either XPS or TP X1 extreme. Got bored with my macbook:)

Hey Dave, great video summary as always, and good on you to point out year after year the thermal limitations of this device, but I think after this many years and this many iterations, I think you should call out their ongoing problems with high DPC latency. It appears all xps models, 13/15 inch since 9x5x series is heavily affected. The problem is so bad and pervasive that just day to day usage causes pops and crackles in multimedia playback.

Dave I have had this laptop for about a month now the 2019 version and I gotta say most of the points you said are pretty true. Just running Minecraft at 60 FPS heats up the laptop pretty quick to the point where you almost wouldn’t want to hold your hand on the bottom of the laptop. The top also heats up and you can feel it right above the F1-12 keys. I’ve also had some Bluetooth problems, where if I turn off the computer or just turn Bluetooth off it won’t turn back on unless the drivers are reinstalled. I’m not sure if that’s the killer cards fault or mine is defective. But other than that I’ve had no problems with this laptop and it’s really nice I would definitely recommend it

Yeah man, I’m pretty sure anyone would want an I7 9750H and (At least) a GTX 1660 Ti, in their laptop rather than a I7 9550U and a MX150.
@@khaki1295 agree with you. I'm beginning to think Nvidia overhyped as per usual that MX150 to these laptop suppliers (back in the day) and they have loads of stock, hence why they're still included to this day (while supplies last). I think we're all waiting for 10 series gtx to be included at a fair price in all laptops (notably the 1660Ti and up) although I can't wait for laptops to include the new super chipset from Nvidia (forget the Ray tracing) as their performance, being a 10 series, are comparable to the 20 series but not the 2080/Ti
I agree. Also, not everyone wants a 1080p 144Hz display. From a value perspective the 4K OLED price is incredibly cheap compared to other laptops.
The Blade 15 that is being championed has a 4K OLED option prices at £3150! That’s £1000 more than a similar specced XPS.
For this particular device I feel that the test would have been more interesting in a kinda real world stress test.. like how it performs on a few flagship apps and how stable the system is ... You don't peak a thin, light but solid laptop to raw powa.. for this you just go with the dual power cord 1080ti laptop the can run word on battery for only one our 😂 (yeah this is a real existing laptop that came out e few years ago)
Best reviewer, straight into the business no crap. Doesn't elongate the video like other reviewers do. Excellent work Dave 💪

Not sure if you'll be able to do a review as such, but I was hoping to find a review of a laptop for software developers. I've been watching all of your videos over and over again, but I don't think I really get the info that I need, I don't game much, just once in a while but not heavy games either, for me, the most important things are having a big screen prefferably 4k (but the big question is if I'll be able to use it without windows scaling), light weight, good processor and lots of RAM, at least 16 but would preffer 32... and of course, nvme, maybe 2 slots?
