The fact that this is the same price as the base steam deck 256gb makes this DOA. Just buy the steam deck, there is no reason to buy this.
Bruh only 256? That’s unusable bro
@@th9986You can upgrade the SSD or install a MicroSD card.
@@th9986 with 256gb you can literally download 'the witcher 3' 8 times over.
Base Steam Deck is $400.
@@Luke357base steam deck with 64GB ( Austin also stated it in the video) is $349 which is the same as what the Ayano is charging. Only advantage they have at their price point ( or arguably main) is storage space lol.
Going by the steam app ( and gamestop website) if you are able to get your hands on one for a refurbished 512GB it is $359.99. Currently the steam app is showing out of stock, so it would be a game of Russian roulette with GameStop if you were to go the refurbished route lol.
I really think it's a swing and a miss to not have SteamOS/HoloISO pre-installed. Most average users aren't going to go through the hassle you went through to get that running, meaning they're stuck with a subpar experience under Windows, or have to manually expand the filesystem after the HoloISO install. Either way, seems like a nice bit of kit!
I think it's fine, given Ayaneo really doesn't support their devices like Valve does with their Steam Decks. I wouldn't want Ayaneo to give people a bad first impression of Steam OS just because Ayaneo would likely half-a$$ it. And that would hurt Valve in a way, too, because of those poor first impressions.
I also wonder how many meetings Microsoft made with Ayaneo, just like in the 1990s...
Valve needs to release official SteamOS for manufactures to start installing in their handhelds
@@QOBRAI want SteamOS for my gaming PC. I'm sick of windows.
@@MuffHam you can just use holo ISO or Chimera OS!
@cameronbosch1213 depends on how they market themselves / or if resellers market it. I would think most people going into the market for a "steam deck" would understand that the Holo OS isn't the official steam deck OS. It kinda defeats the purpose of it being the budget option when you have to pay for a windows license. If it wasn't for windows they could have kept their cost at $300. Since they went with Windows it added a cost of $50. Like Austin stated at that point just spend a few more bucks to get a premium option. They are advertising themselves as the budget option, but are at the very edge of going into premium pricing, especially if you consider used / refurbished lol.
Pretty sure he lost all his space because the cloning process also clones the size of the source drive onto the target. If you take a 256gb SSD and clone the files onto a 500gb SSD you will only have 256gb useable on the 500gb and a partition will be created but inactive with the remaining space, you're missing. I had to use NIUBI Editor to move the 2 storage partitions together then extend my active partition to allocate the unused space.
You could also use GParted/KDE partition manager.
Came here to say this.
The hardware specs for the price of the Ayaneo Next Lite are excellent. Evans's poor review stems from being too incompetent to properly install SteamOS. I'll take 512GB for the same price as Steams 64GB version.
Interesting product, although by this time next week they will already have several newer versions making this version out of date. The almost weekly rate at which Aya Neo cranks out new devices makes me wonder about long term support. This already looks to be a bit of a waste of money, I would just save up a bit more money and get a Steam Deck because the ecosystem and the product have synergy and I just don’t think Non SD can compete, even when some devices have way more capability.
the only thing I can think this is good (games aside) is to have a *portable* windows machine without buying a laptop.
I mean, the cheapest laptop is like 200€, but we are talking about a 4GB ram ddr3, intel celeron, 180GB ssd without a GPU. Going up to to 350€ you can get a *refurbished* HP laptop with AMD A6, 16GB ram, 120Gb SSD or a new generic brand with intel n5100, 12GB ram, 256SSD, windows 11 and integrated graphic card "Intel UHD Graphics".
This thing will burn down the laptops in the same price bracket. Only downside is you will need to bring around another trinket in the form of a mini keyboard or use the virtual keyboard. If you need it, at that.
@@ignoto82drat that point just get a freaking laptop lmfao. You can even buy them used for cheap. Dont need to shell out for a half ased product thats meant for "gaming"
@@ignoto82dr Also a portable monitor if you don't want neck injury.
At which point you aren't saving any money.
i absolutely love my Legion GO. I purchased it because I was going on a trip to Oklahoma and was going to be spending some time in an airport and plane and wanted something to do. The battery life isn't the best ever but being able to hook it to a dock and do some actual work with a keyboard and mouse was amazing. I'm glad I spent the money on it
Austin should know cheapest Steam Deck is 256GB since OLED one came out.
They are still selling the even older original one, for 350
The 64GB continues to be sold at $350 while supplies last, they just won't be making more.
Did they increase the price?
@@pulakprakritinope, the 256 gig version is 400 bucks now.
@vyrn7877 That’s great. But sadly only the old 64 gb model is available here 😐
the steam deck takes up half a backpack? You rocking a tiny hello kitty backpack or something?
😂😂😂
Naw it does take up a lot of space I have a bag that I use to carry my 17 inch laptop and it takes up a good bit of space much more than let's say a switch.
Hyperbole
You can tap the battery icon to bring up quick setting menu.
They need to add tweaker settings so that people can tinker with the voltage etc on a bios level.
Some crazy nutjob is gonna be able to undervolt the crap out of it and still have it run perfectly fine at max performance....
I am just curious. Where did you get that awesome Laguna Seca Shirt?
The thing about AYA and Holo ISO is that:
1) AYA does not own Holo ISO, so there's very little they can do on their end to fix it.
2) Holo ISO is 1000% for enthusiasts. If you're not an enthusiast DO NOT USE HOLO ISO! There was a LOT more Austin and company needed to do to get the Next Lite to work properly with Holo ISO. This is not me dunking on Austin, but more dunking on AYA for saying that Holo ISO works with the Next Lite. That's pretty scummy of AYA to say that.
Here's my theory: AYA couldn't get permission to use the official SteamOS directly from Valve nor could they get permission from the makers of Holo ISO. But they still really wanted to say they had SteamOS on the Next Lite... So they just said you could install Holo ISO onto the Next Lite, implying support without actually offering any.
I think they just jumped the gun on this one. BUT, they should definitely tell people the true progress on SteamOS/Holo. Windows worked pretty well for the specs.
When you video starts up, the first thing I see is your shirt representing Laguna Seca race track. Nice touch there lol 😆
Oof, I hear Chimera OS has support for aya neo devices. It's basically the same thing as holo, I think holo even uses some stuff from chimera
Bringus said go ahead Austin, that's not jank enough for me
So im guessing the age old remove rhe SSD from the portable and write the OS file directly to it doesnt work with this one.
As soon as I heard "Ryzen 5 4500U", I knew it was DOA. The Deck is $400 for the 256GB model - its iGPU is running circles around 4500U's iGPU. The only thing the 4500U is good for is with CPU performance - but they had only one job, and that was to make a game console, not a laptop (I wish they had done it).
Meanwhile I STILL can't afford it
Sounds like a skill issue
Looking at your pfp I can tell why
@@ItsThatCarGuyLMAO
This thing is like 90 percent of my paycheck
@@thechommytong420 Ok?
Doesn’t Ayaneo release soo many handhelds that they don’t support them all much after launch?
Yes. Especially because they crowdfund so regularly they seem to have a really short attention span. I hope the Deck can have a really long span of support
@@Collin_JI mean, that's EXACTLY why Valve is in no hurry to release a SD2 (OLED pretty much being a 1.5).
2:13 Thought that was a dead pixel on my expensive OLED monitor. Thanks for the scare Austin.
I absolutely love my Steam Deck. Just save for the real thing. You will be much happier in the long run.
I think Steam Deck is better on a hardware and software level, but this thing looks way more portable and comfortable which was my main problem with Steam Deck. Had to sell it after 2 months because I barely used it outside of my house because of how big it was. This looks like something you can actually put in your bag on a daily basis, even tho not as good as something like Switch Lite
@@TakisEnjoyer I think I am getting old. I am astounded every time I see a full gaming computer that I can hold in my hands like the Steam Deck even if it’s bulky. In high school we had to carry our mini atx gaming box pc with all accessories to our friends house if we wanted to play something as simple as StarCraft. Now I can just pull my Steam Deck out of its case and play games I only dreamed of playing on the road.
@@scorpionscythe maybe it's just because I was in this hobby for a while, Deck is impressive, but back then it was like "Do I really need all this performance if because of the size I only gonna use it at home where I already have a better PC?", so I would always take some other handheld with me. And nowadays we have handhelds that are more powerful yet smaller and lighter. I still think that on a software level Deck is the only handheld that can fight with something like Switch or other actual consoles, but I would really like to see them working on some Slim version in a few years alongside Deck 2 that maybe not as powerful, but at least actually portable.
I game on the bus. The size is fine.
@@TakisEnjoyermay just be a smaller hands/smaller person issue. I can't stand smaller devices they feel like little cheap toys in my hand, switch lite especially is probably the worst gaming device I could ever imagine using. The Deck has heft in all the right ways, and its size, despite this being a common complaint, has never made it troublesome to pack or carry for me. Its just made for larger people, adults mainly, probably specifically adult men.
The price is so close to the ROG ally and steam deck, I feel like there is 0 reason to get this device over the others. The steam deck has way better controls and OS support, while the Ally has a better screen and performance.
are you talking about the oled or lcd steam deck
Ally also comes with a free sd card cooker tho
@@maskedrebel9670waiting for my sd card to finish frying.
check the thermals under linux like bringus did with the 2s, also check how hot the screen is
That box alone gives me huge "market stall knockoff console" vibes.
Aya neo is pretty legit. They were the first ones to release a ryzen powered handheld gaming PC. Back then we only had gpd with their Intel based handhelds.
@@GodSonBlessed but does that mean their devices are good? and affordable? eh
@@zafewaterbois5872 They're not going to be as affordable as the steam deck because steam can afford to sell their handhelds at a loss. But they're definitely high quality. I own two of them.
@@GodSonBlessedthat doesn't mean their legit, they literally drop support and give no care for their older device as soon as it turns a year old+ all they do is just mass produce Handhelds that dies out after a few months of usage that no one asked for.
Why was the original decks screen not shown next to the lite if it's same" the only thing similar is the resolution🙂should follow up showing the actual screens running the same image side by side. Color gamuts exist.
Matt was right, keep it on windows and run Big picture mode.
Did they say to use Clonezilla? Normally you wouldn't flash a full image for an OS on a PC.
For some reason, instead of supplying a standard ISO, Aya Neo supplied a broken Clonezilla image to install HoloISO...
The pastel blue one is actually in stock RN
Why didn't you try Chimeraos? Seems like that could work better.
I'll be honest, whatever you switched to to film with a @ 9:43 the picture/color/contrast is much better than the main camera. Audio not so much but the image personally looks better and more true
Wait... so basically this is the Aya Neo 2021 Pro??? I wonder if the device would be much better on Linux Steam Deck Edition distro like ChimeraOS, BazziteOS, or NobaraOS versus HoloISO

I mean it looks like one
Well the switch OLED is good though

Meanwhile waiting for steam deck discount
might as well just buy one, steam don't typically discount their hardware products unless they're being discontinued, which the steam deck is nowhere close to.
The price difference to the 256 gig steam deck is only 50 bucks, so there's not really a reason to wait.
@@toxicturkeyyThere already were discounts for Deck on last Summer Sale and 20th Steam Anniversary
@@Calslock Those are the exceptions? Idk I feel like someone would say that 🤷🏾♂️
They had a summer sale last summer. I saved a lot of money buying the 512gb LCD model.
I know the struggles of installing Steam OS on a Chinese laptop ( I'd post of link but don't want to be that guy - video on the channel ) I got holo ISO installed but it locked up on startup screen a few times and when I tried to upgrade it, it completely broken the OS so I went with Chimera OS. Chimera OS works fairly well but it came with its own issues I had to iron out with tons of online research. The process is somewhat stressful and was never as simple as it seemed for ETA Prime. Steam needs to release a working version of the OS for different hardware!
I was expecting Austin to find out how awful the iGPU was on the Z1 non-Extreme, which even though has 6 cores like Zen 4 Ryzen 5s, has only 1/3 of the GPU compute units (4) instead of 2/3s that the other Ryzen 5s get (8, for reference, the Z1 Extreme/Ryzen 7 or 9s has 12 GPU compute units)
The Z1 non extreme is excellent at the $399 new price nowadaus. It runs older and indie very well
I wanted this to work with the either the Holo ISO or have a better chip sooooo bad.... I LOVE the white and orange aesthetics!
Austin needs to buy a pack of space raiders to find his brothers
Next time, try to use balena etcher to create a boot stick from the holoISO image.
I saw another review that went into more detail about how Aya Neo went about this process. Aside from their instructions recommending Ventoy, there's another issue. For some ungodly reason, they didn't supply a normal ISO image. They supplied a broken Clonezilla image. That would explain why Austin went for the weird Clonezilla route over Belena Etcher or Rufus.
I believe the fan is blasting due to the fan settings in developer mode try to toggle them and see what happens
Austin you need to lv extend the partition to 100%. I had this issue with Ubuntu server only taking 100GB.
It's clearly not a recommended purchase. Since you already have it, though, it's worth checking to see if ChimeraOS works better on the hardware than the HoloISO image they provide. It would be funny if it did. There are alternate ways to get to all the settings. However, what's the point of the HoloISO image if it's not actually customized for the device.
@austinevans What T-Shirt are you wearing? White/Blue with penguin.
Something from the brand Original Penguin
Thank you :-)
You should try installing tiny 11
If I am not mistaken some people on CZcams looked into Tiny 11 and found malware on it. I also think they discovered that a lot of security features needed by windows were turned off as well. So I would avoid using Tiny 11. In reality it's just a custom ISO of windows that you can create yourself. So if you really want to remove a lot of bloatware while still being secure it's probably best to look into how you can create your own windows ISO.
Is that Laguna Seca on the shirt?
You should have inboxed a guy like eta prime for some pointers. I can't wait for his video on this.
some of the ssd size issues youbhad were prolly the fact there isnstill a windows partition there and you only had 100gb free so the ssd wasnt fully formatted
how would this compare to rog ally z1
1:46 is that Susu's outro music?
The song / music is:
Caribbean Arcade by Christian Nanzell
@Austin Evans you probably have better luck with bazzite os rather than the dead holoiso
but why is the OS so hard to install?
Do one about the rog ally
I had the original aya neo with the 4500u and tested holo iso it was buggy and took hours to install just like you and straight away I had to go back to windows so I knew they wouldn’t add it
Cyberpunk is a game that shows decent sometimes great fps for a handheld when you benchmark. But the second you jump in game your averaging high 20 to mid 30 fps, while some areas are 45-60.
For some reason I can only see this video in a low quality, and no way to even choose 1080p…just tried watching a different video and is perfect…just this one with the quality error
And this is exactly why the steam deck is the only one of these devices that ever caught my attention. I can barely deal with windows on my computer and now on a handheld the experience is just a mess.
What sort of computer do you have if it can barely deal with windows!?
@@joepower777 i think hes just talking about the user experience in general, for most people it often feels like windows is actively fighting against you at all times
@@fiftythirdth really? I'd assume that the majority of people are light users that aren't consistently encountering issues.
Everyone encounters Windows issues, especially light users.@@joepower777

I think whoever can compete with Switch prices, and still make a good mini PC, wins.
Very disappointing, I would have liked to see a return to 2016 where we had low-budget handhelds like this. But ditching SteamOS and incrrasing the price probably for the Windows license was a horrible decision
does bazzite work?
Why did you try to clone the ISO on the machine instead of ditching Ventoy (very nice tool when used correctly) for a direct image to stick copy using rufus, balenaEtcher or even dd? I get that this is meant from a consumer point of view but even then someone with actual computer knowledge could have tried to install it again instead of Austin.
Austin really isn't all that tech-savvy, which is kind of weird for a "tech" channel of this size.
This 100 percent this . I wonder how much better it would have worked if installed correctly
exactly. like wtf???
Becuase he tried to follow relatively the tutorial provided, also probably would have sucked anyway, ayaneo's software and drivers are trash and have 0 support
@@swe872 yeah but without completing the install one time correctly you won't know. Needs to be a fair chance to evaluate it
You should of tried ChimeraOS instead since that one is more up to date since HoloISO stopped updating their OS.
The process of installing Steam OS looked like Austing was trying to jailbreak an iPhone. And the fact that you lose functions of some of the buttons is a huge oversight. This thing is going to flop hard.
Austin, the Windows partition is probably still there. You most likely split the drives, installed Steam OS onto the second drive, and created a new partition.
10:05 that bad piggies ahh laugh
This could be pretty decent if you use it for emulation-only and some older games
Need an official update from Ayaneo. I’m pretty sure something went really really wrong with the OS install. This has some potential, too bad about HoloISO not working as expected.
That's even better a $350 Windows 11 PC 💯
my question is is the screen actually 60z because everygame ran a 40 or less fps or is the device locked to run ames a 40fps
Idk i dual boot my steamdeck and well to be honest outside of need for speed games most of my games run about the same in windows vs steam os. And even the windows experience is pretty decent not as slow as this device which is saying a lot, because it has 2 more cores and those cores clock higher so why it runs so slow in windows i think something is wrong with the device. Outside the UI there really shouldn't be much of a difference.
I'm not sure how valid Austin's problems were I'm not sure the Holoiso install was completed correctly. It's definitely not user friendly but I'm not sure what was done was correct.
Normally with ventoy, you just copy the OS iso to the flashdrive, boot from flash and you can choose the iso to boot from, you can put as much iso's on it as you like (as long you have drivespace offcourse), the fact that ventoy didn't show any iso means he didn't copy the iso, copied it wrong or put the zip on it instead off the iso.
@@elBartoDR exactly what I was thinking, It kinda looked like he was trying to clone the live installer after not understanding ventoy and if that's what he did then custom stuff done by ayeaneo won't be applied
It also depends on the size of the SD card and how you set it up. For example I was having an issue with my ventoy drive in a 256gb with secure boot and uefi. Which can work but if I recall you have to format a partition where you store you ISO's to a max of 64gb or 100gb. Otherwise it will hang and not find anything for some reason. So if they didn't turn off secure boot or uefi and the SD card was too large then that could be a reason why it initially failed among other possible reasons.
There are many reasons why I waited patiently for a big company to come out with a handheld. There are many more reasons why I will wait patiently for a true competitor to the steam deck.
You're not just buying a device, you're buying an experience. Nothing beats Valve in this regard. Still.
I feel like Steam is on to something with it's SteamOS.
If they work on it to make it functional with PC's and other handhelds, more people will jump on this Linux version.
I second mint, great for the average user
I third Mint, Steam + Heroic launcher for Gog and Epic. Bottles for the rest.
Running Linux Mint on both my older HTPC-converted-from-a-server and on my potato laptop. Steam with Proton, Heroic Launcher and Lutris all working great on it, can't complain. Still use Windows 11 for my main PC for a few reasons, but if those reasons didn't exist I'd probably install Linux on that as well... since the Steam Deck came out, Linux gaming has made huge strides, so I guess we have Valve (in part) to thank for that.
Hold the Home button and press A to open the right side options menu.
flashing on this shit seems like a nightmare
It seems like an bios problem? Maybe they'll fix it in future bios updates...... And that's a big maybe
I bought a 256 gb Steamdeck for 300 cad last year lol
Why can't it have a proper boot device selection menu like almost every other x86 device? Being a handheld shouldn't make a difference.
It can't run grub?
Given it fired up ventoy it does have a normal boot selection menu. My guess is they didnt disable secure boot or the holo iso was corrupted.
It's not bad. A windows machine for less than 300 means you can play nvidia geforce now or gamepass cloud on it, but also dock it for light pc work
I got the steam deck and it’s fine n all, but i then picked up the ayn Odin 2 and that handheld is so fun
I have the very first Aya Neo. I got the retro edition. I have that and my steamdeck. The aya neo is easibly

But will it play helldivers 2?
13:16 Come on, charge your deck.
FYI, the Next Lite will sell for $300.
It's -
$300 - 4500u - 128gb - March/April
$350 - 4500u - 512gb - March/April
$400 - 4800u - 512gb - April
I've been having great fun with mine on windows/JELOS.
I hope nobody buys that 128gb version, that is such a useless amount of storage
There is a steamos shortcut to bring up the QAM menu(the right menu), I believe it's STEAM + A. That being said it shouldnt be necessary and they really should fix this.
If they want this to be a real competitor to the steam deck it really needs to come with a properly setup install of HoloIOS.
Main problem of ALL this "Steam Deck killers" is on Windows and no optimisation of Windows for this devises
Steam Deck is more optimised by software (SteamOS + Proton and another software from Valve) to components inside the Deck, thats why Deck is standing on the top on this price segment
Ayaneo have better sollutions, BUT on more bigger prise
So SteamOS is reading the input as just an Xbox controller. You can bring up the Steam Settings with the "Home" button + A. Might give an option to adjust TDP and all that. But the fact that it took them a couple of weeks to make the HOLOISO image available is... not good. Ayaneo should probably just stick with emulation.
It's almost as if they didn't realise that Home + A didn't exist and wasn't a button combo that opens the quick access panel...
There are also better SteamOS-lile images out there that would work much much better, such as ChimeraOS or Bazzite.
I have the 512gb LCD Steam Deck. I bought it last summer when it was on sale. Ironically, this was literally a few months before the OLED was released. If only I had known this, I would have just bought the OLED. Ah well...
Yeah, a pre-owned Steam Deck is better in every way. I was a pre-order for the original Steam Deck and my uncle came round, saw how awesome it was, and immediately bought himself one on eBay and has been emulating all of the old games he used to play as a kid on super old hardware. Didn't need to spend full price on it. It works perfectly and he loves it!
Whew, i thought that was the ROG Ally i was considering to buy
Use chemica OS , it compatible OS to AYA Next
Somewhere in a parallel universe there is a machine reviewing a $300 Austin that's not Mahone nor from Texas.
if you're only interested in emulation, get the ayn odin 2. performance will run circles around this with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2.
if you want to play recent games get a ROG ally Z1 extreme or steam Deck. nothing else really is out yet that can match them
you should have tried bazzite on it or chimera os
I love to watch non-Arch users struggle to set up Arch on standard x86 hardware
and yes, SteamOS3 is based on Arch - Holo only is a toolbox to get it to work until valve finally reaslse some official stuff
to me it's austin here at fault just not get his head around how to install Arch ...
This is just a repackaged version of the original Aya Neo, which is five years old now. It was very good for the time, but has been far surpassed since then.
Austin should say goodbye video for Matt Pat
I can't wait gor the day that a competitively priced Windows handheld launches.
Same with the price for a macbook pro
