Race: The Conquer [Toughtest Backyard Ultra]
Film produced by Jeff Marier / @trailrunningzen @Obstacleracingmedia
Videography by Jeff Marier & Hunter Leininger - Sport
A few thoughts about this video - Excellent footage by the way. First, establish where this is, the race's history, how many miles per lap, previous record holders, elevation gain, etc. Second, pick one or two top prospects to profile as they go through the race, because it adds stakes for the viewer. Third, ground the viewer in how many miles have been completed (rather than just saying "Lap 10," say "Lap 10 - Mile 34 - 12 hours elapsed". Great atmosphere, shots, interviews - really enjoyed watching.
I kinda like not knowing exactly the specifics of distance/time. It feels like this race is about going even through the unknown of how long it is or how far it is. Not knowing places the viewer in that position, even if it’s to a tiny extent. More information on how this race works and rules would be nice to know though.
I completely agree with you. I wasn't invested in anyone, so after the first 5 minutes I just skipped to the last 5 minutes and it doesn't feel like I missed much.
@@bachtretiktok attention span
Id also like to see how many runners are left at on each lap
I watched the whole thing and still don’t know how many miles per lap hah.
Soo impressed by "casual hoodie guy"
Those are always the guys you have to keep a eye on!!
@@EnduranceHunter What was the music used in this please? I can't seem to see it listed anywhere. Cheers from Australia
@@carolcarol3938if you mean that song at 17:00 its: "There goes the Devil" from Michael Shynes
@@korbibro142 Thank you very much
It takes some great editing to make people running 100 miles this emotional. Amazing video!
Thanks so much!!
no it doesn't, honestly the start was not emotional at all. 100 miles is incredibly difficult have some respect for the runners.
That cold is rough! 10:00 That's some amazing advice, the difference between stopping vs being stopped.
Thats the best advice for this format of race! Just keep moving and be forced to stop, don't quit on yourself!
Congrats to everybody that have pushed themselfved during this ultra.
Also the winner deserve a big shoutout as he did 196 KM which is a totaly crazy distance.
Thanks for this awesome video, have a wonderfull week.
Dan
This race was BRUTAL but it was so fun! Highly recommend
So glad that you could join us for this first year!! Hope to see you next year!
That cold reminded me of my 100 miler I did and it was much colder, but we had indoor aid stations. You guys bared that climate the whole time! Kudos!!
Cold ultras are another beast! It makes every stop so much harder to get going again!! Kudos to you!
Steven King wrote a dystopian horror about this, turns out somebody didn't take the right message away
The Long Walk it was originally written under his pseudonym. One of my favorites by him.
But that was for their lives, right? Run or die.
@@Welther47 Big prize for the winner though
Did not expect a book rec from a comment under an ultra doc, but I’ve bookmarked the book. Thanks!
Jesus christ it BEGINS with Amicalola falls? Those steps are brutal even on a day hike
I’m slowly falling in love with Ultra running - not for my body but my mind… being in nature, hanging out with folks, being able to push limits… age is celebrated, and there’s usually pancakes and quesadillas and snacks… it’s crazy , we’re all crazy, and it’s awesome.
ps if you think it’s “only” 3+ miles every hour “how hard could it be” 🤷🏼♀️ lol try it 😂
Epic! Amazing job on the documentary, it was put together so well!
Thanks a ton Jesse!! I’m really proud of the action and story we were able to capture!!
I ran a 24 hour race in the UK, but looking at that elevation on this course it was mind blowing and brutal!
Congratulations to all that took part 👏
Woah congrats on your race! It sounds like you'll have a good shot at this race next year!
Reminds me of the book "The long walk" by stephen king, they had to maintain a pace of 4mph, if they went lower for to long they were out and the last person remaining won
This is what the rules should be, I'm seeing too many people just walking this.
@@Photosynthesisbeing They do have to maintain a minimum pace though--if they can't finish a loop in 60 minutes, they're out 😎
You literally just described the rules. Each loop is 4 miles (and a little bit more). You have to do a loop every hour.
@@the_mowron in the book they get shot for walking to slow
I read that book over 30yrs ago and it still gives me nightmares
Ultra running is by far one of the best communities I know of!
This was outstanding, this made me want to take up ultrarunning or find something I can go 100% in on
"If you stop you're going to die" - My mindset right there. It doesn't matter if it's true or not, the belief itself will carry you to the finish line.
From someone who lives where it actually gets really cold, just keep your water bottles right next to your body, beneath any clothing.
Yes! Maybe next year, the runners will be more prepared for the cold!
“Hunter made me go out again.”
Lol peer pressure got you another half loop. You’re welcome.
Beautiful video and cinematic music choice, b roll, and interview edits come together to create amazing content. Thanks so much for making this!
Knowing when to stop is just as crucial as pushing yourself.
Great video sir. Amazing race. Russ cook is running the length of Africa as we speak. Id say he'd give this race a right go. Should check him out.
You earned my sub my man. Looking forward to having a look at the rest of your stuff.
Yes!! Russ is a absolute legend!
Incredible race, incredible people, incredible documentary!
Thank you so much ❤
Thank you so much!! I'm so proud of everyone involved in this race and doc!
The editing is insane. Thank you for this high quality video ❤
DESERVES WAY MORE VIEWS!
Thanks a ton!!
An absolutely incredible video. And I only saw winners competing.
So if they do a lap in 40 mins they have 20 to rest/eat/warm up? Just curious if that’s the rules. Basically just have to keep the hour pace but can strategically use breaks?
Just an amazing video all around 😄It’s so powerful how they get emotional when they’re unable to continue. Just giving it everything. Very inspiring
yep you got it! the strategy being do you want to carefully pace yourself & reserve energy or do you want to hustle through each lap and use the down time to recover? Neither strategy is wrong, Brian chose to walk as much as he could, almost always came in with minutes to spare and was in the top 10
What a beautiful and inspiring video. Thanks so much.
Thanks a ton!! Glad you liked it!
Extraordinarily epic! Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it!! These athletes are just amazing, I’m grateful we were able to tell their stories!
The camera work and editing is amazing! Crazy competition my man!
Appreciate it!
I’ve watched a lot of ultra running videos and this was the best. Thank you
Oh wow!! Thanks a ton!
Watch the documentaries on the Barkley.
Watch a lot like this and it's a great edit- keep these up :)
This was very beautiful to watch, thank you
Stoicism in action. The antidote to easy living. Challenge, discomfort, inner strength and resilience. Well done all those who took part.
Such a cool video, honestly the way it’s edited is just amazing. It really shows you how insane this race is. I’m so impressed by these guys!!!
It would be nice to see more of the perspective of women doing this race
This was so fun to watch! Thank you
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great video, as always logistics is king, warm food and shelter
Yes exactly!! Logistics are super important at this race when every second counts!
the most important detail of this whole video is missing...how long was each lap ?
Love this video, and love warrior racing(a.r. Georgia). These guys know how to put on a race!
Beautiful editing!
Whoever filmed and edited this video deserves a raise!
Thank you! I'm sure Hunter agrees as well! 😎
1000 extra props to the man who did this race w/o a crew 🤯 impressive!
Not only that but he flew in from Denmark for this race!
Great work!
Thanks so much Matt!!
I can't say I love the concept of this race.
Great video!
Beautiful
Kinda hate when people say they're done and others keep egging them on, like with Justin.
Dude was at his limit, knew he was done, said "I'm feeling hypothermic" and they went Nah, keep going 💀
Great film makling.
Thanks Kevin!!
This is badass
Such badass athletes to keep going in those horrific conditions!!
3.4 miles per hour in that terrain is a very uncomfortable pace.
Yeah! It seems easy on paper but once you see the course its way harder than it looks!
Great video and cool sport! I would also have loved to hear from some of the women athletes
Very nice video!
Thanks so much!
Finally making the time to watch this. Excellent! Such great editing, great music choices, great concept. Will look forward to following this one year after year! Loved it! Have you considered having a female division? Seemed like mostly a field of men. Just an idea…
Thanks a ton Andrea! I'm really proud of the race and the doc!! There's no female division because we know that you or Courtney Dauwalter could come crush all the guys ;)
04:48 nice crunch :D
haha glad you liked that ;)
great video
great video and incredible event! as someone who has never heard of this event, I would have appreciated a detailed explanation of all the rules in the beginning. would have made it easier to understand from the start. beautifully filmed and edited nonetheless.
Thanks a ton! Yeah I'm sorry there wasn't a detailed explanation of the rules, but the thing about this race, is there's truly only a few rules. Carry the $100, finish the 3.4 mile loop in 60 minutes, and you have 60 seconds to start the next loop before the gate closes.
This is so cool thanks for posting it😊
Glad you enjoyed it!!
Would be cool to know basic stuff like, how long is each lap, where is this????
Each lap is 4.167 miles. A backyard ultra, which this is, is based off running 100 miles in a day, so 100/24 = 4.167 mile course. But, as it says, the race only ends when the last person runs one last loop, it doesn't end at any particular distance or # of loops. This is in Amicalola Falls State Park in Georgia, part of the Appalachian Trail.
Awesome concept... I am not even trying... :D
Everyone got a straight face until David Goggin's pulls up with a boat over his head
Lol I wonder how he would do at this race!
Probably win and then do it again after everyone went home, faster the 2nd time
It would be interesting to see how something like this changes as the degree of difficulty goes up or down. Say pick a lap that a lot of people would have to really work at to have 10 minutes to spare vs one where you can do it in have the par time (when you're fresh). I'm guessing the first would select for people who can push hard and the second for people who just keep pushing.
Really great concept! Is there a fee also? Keep trail running fr$$ , volunteer to maintain your local trails!!!
I once had to guard a house with seven sets of stairs 2 mile perimeter walking all night, I never did figure how many miles walked after 24 hours.
What a great idea, what a great race and what a great documentary. Did you edit it yourself as well?
Thanks a ton David!! Jeff Marier and I filmed the whole race but Jeff was the one that edited the whole thing! He did a incredible job!!
Thanks for the shout out, awesome working with you Hunter! 😎
what's the artist and song at the end?
@@russellclark7256 "There goes the Devil" by Michael Shynes
I like the coverage, not focusing on the details but on the experience and the people. The 20 something’s on Reddit try to make it more than it is tracking the runners and their gear/tech/training. Putting courses up on a pedestal like it’s a vacation destination. These backyard ultras are and have always been anti marathons where you really get to know the community you are running with and everyone from the first loser to the winner has the same experience of competing with themselves.
The long walk
Growimg up, i was an extremely fast walker. Parents necer drove me anywhere, if i wanted to go there i had to walk. Easily covered 6 miles a day on average. 13 mile walks were nothing. Part of my route was a jogging path, and i would breeze past joggers while walking lol (and smoking at the same time) i hated hills though, i would get terrible pains in the front of my shins. My only break would be waiting for crosswalk lights.
Not saying i could won this race, but i think i was built for it
For those wondering:
One lap is 4.1 miles. The elevation is 605 steps. Sign up fee is 225$.
This is the info from their official website (link in description):
$10,000 to the overall winner (100 runners) each runner will pay $225 to sign up and, at the start of the race, will be given a $100 bill to carry the entire race. If the runner desires to stop or times out of the race, they will place the $100 bill into a glass case for the overall winner to claim at the end. Two years into the planning to discover the toughest location to pull off a backyard ultra and we found it at the famous AT approach trail in the Amicalola Falls State Park at the coldest possible time of the year. The loop starts at the top of the falls with the rugged East Ridge trail leading down to the bottom parking area to pick up the lower Mountain Laurel trail and then up the AT Approach trails with 605 steps back to the top of the falls.
Simple: Each runner will have 1 hour to complete the 4.1-mile loop every hour until only one person remains.
3.4 miles and 1hour to complete , how long between the gate shut at end of lap to opening to start next lap
The first gate shut at the top of the hour, then they had 60 seconds until the next gate closes!
How long is each loop and how much incline?
So where was it? When was it? How far is a lap? How far did the winner run in the end?
Yeah I'd really like to know that too.
just stumbled on this.. can someone explain the resting periods and how they work.
You have 60 mins to complete the loop, if you finish fast in say 50 mins, that gives you 10 mins to take a rest before you have to start again. A lot of different strategies that people do. Some run fast and take lots of breaks while others go slow and come in right at 59 mins and never take breaks!
@@EnduranceHunterthanks ! i appreciate the response.
I wanna try this, it's Awesome.how long is each lap?
We put it on every year, so you should totally sign up!! It’s a 3.4 mile loop every hour, the course might change a little next year to 4.1 miles!
Justin’s story sounds like a Disco Elysium ending
Hey what song is featured in this?
Goggins stil running
This is fcking EPIC!!!!🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Woohoo!! Thanks a ton, I’m very happy with how the race went this first year and the documentary we were able to put together!!
@@EnduranceHunter yeah Great work Filming it! Need more 😎🤌
we have the same last name
I'd do this with bong hits. Have to clear so many bong hits an hour, last one to stop wins. 😊
I love that idea! Unfortunately it's a banned substance in most races as it gives you an advantage
If everyone is starting each lap together how much of a pause is between each lap? Or are the people getting rest just finishing early enough to get time?
New laps start at the top of every hour, so for example if you finish a lap in 40 minutes you have 20 minutes to rest. Conversely, if you don't make it back to the startline in one hour you are out.
surprised people don't die trying this

REGISTRATION OPENS THIS WEDNESDAY, MAY 8TH, AT 9:00AM EASTERN TIME AND WILL SELL OUT IN MINUTES.
Go to Ultra Sign-up and get ready.
Due to more stair construction scheduled for January 2025, the park has asked us to move the event to December 7th, 2024. This change will allow us to keep the course design as planned, and it should not be as cold as January.
I'm calling Forest Gump
If you listened to David Goggins yelling at you to stay hard you’d get an extra 2 laps minimum
How far is each lap? What happens when they finish they wait ?
3.4 miles nad yes wait about just a few minutes

Is there a time limit per lap?

Every year it will be a 1 hour time limit per lap, but the distance might change a little! Next year it will probably be a 4.1 mile loop!

I had a question, how long is each lap?
4.2 miles
Overall great video however one minor critique, the song that permeated throughout the later part of the video made it difficult for me to continue watching as it was not inspiring or uplifting, it sounded sad. Kudos to the runners.
