- I meant to post this a while back before I did the Jazz snare drum video but I forgot all about it.
You can watch that video here:

In this video I show you a vintage 14"x 4" WFL (William F. Ludwig) Snare Drum. I believe this drum is from the late 1940's and was called the Buddy Rich Snare but I could be incorrect so please chime in if you know the correct historical details. It has an mahogany shell and it looks like someone may have painted over the original finish.
Articles I have read say it was made to compete with other companies offering a small snare for use in the new music at the time, Be- Bop. This drum was the precursor to the famous Ludwig Downbeat Snare that was popular in the 1960's. I believe the downbeat drums had the white coating on the inner shell and this does not. I talk about the drum, clean it up, do a few minor repairs, put on calf heads and play it for you.
If you want to skip ahead and hear it here are the times

Love that drum...thank you for the review and amazing chops showcasing it.
There are a few variations of the WFL badge. You can usually date them according to the badge. Check vintage drum guide. Late 50's they switched to the transition badge for a couple of years before going to the keystone badge. If it's WFL it's 58 or earlier.
Nice Rick! 👍👍
That ride cymbal is erotic.
I've found that a spray bottle filled with 1part white vinegar, 1part Windex, and on part warm water with a little dish soap does wonders to clean and bring back a drum and it's wrap (overall cleaning, with soft towel). Follow up with automotive spray on/ wipe off wax and drum shines. (A poor man's resto, tightening and greasing assumed 😉). Love the video.
Sometimes a bit of "age" shining through adds a bit of mystique and history to the drum....mojo if you will.
Thanks Daniel
