Ludwig made this 14x4" Downbeat snare in 1959, just after the name change from WFL Drums. It's approaching 70 years old, but it's got a timeless sound. You'll be surprised just how versatile it is still today!
Here are the drum's details:
- 14x4" Shell
- 8 cast lugs
- 1.6 mm Chrome Over Brass Hoops
- Mahogany, Poplar, Mahogany 3-Ply Shell
- Black Diamond Pearl Finish
I really love this drum because it's that same size and lug count as the Grestch Progressive Jazz snare and even some of the famous Black Beauty and Leedy snare drums of the 1920s and 1930s - the first big renaissance of drum set-oriented instrument manufacturing in the United States. The most recent renaissance of manufacturing in my home is represented by me making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and using a tortilla instead of bread because that's all I had. Oops!
I paired this snare with a 70's Ludwig Downbeat drum set that was overhauled by MKE Drum Co. in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The kit includes a 20x14" bass drum, 12x8" tom, and a 14x14" floor tom.
I use all Turkish Cymbals in this video - 15" Millennium Hi Hats, 20" and 22" Meta Brilliant Crashes, and a 22" Millennium Ride.
All the music I played drums to comes from my drumless tracks, available at slouxrecordingco.bandcamp.com .

Audio was captured with two Universal Audio Apollo x8p interfaces using 1073 preamp modeling. Mics include:
- SE Electronics V-Kick (Kick In)
- Beyer Dynamic Opus 65 (Kick Out)
- Shure Unidyne III SM57 (Snare Top)
- Rode NT55 w/ Cardioid Capsule (Snare Top)
- Audio-Technica ATM650 (Snare Bottom)
- Sennheiser MD-421 (Each Tom)
- AKG C414 TLII Pair (Overheads)
- Apex 210B Ribbon into Soyuz Launcher (Room)
- Shure 588SB (Vocal)
I use Logic Pro X, Waves Audio plugins, and I enjoy long walks on the beach. And that cool mic cable? It comes from Sorry Cables in LA. - www.sorrycables.com

It's a little firecracker, right??
Im a white chocolate and dark chocolate guy. People might not like this but that bad boy tuned high would sound amazing on a hardcore or beatdown track, proper old school ring amd attack! Sick video dude, thanks đ€
I used to have a recipe for white chocolate cake that put a ton of chocolate in the batter AND in the frosting. Was next level. hahahaha And man, you're not wrong about the high tuning. The modern variations I have of this drum are totally suited for that music--live or in the studio. Thanks for the comment and the kind words!
@@timbofromkeno That cake sounds awesome đ€Ż I can't wait to see more content man. Keep up the good work and more than anything have fun đ€
I had a 1961 Downbeat, I sold it and every night I still cry about it. (I got it at an insanely cheap price too, and I know I can't afford another).
I've bought and sold a few personally too. And I've shed a tear over those too! hahaha You gotta remember--you're going to sound like you behind any drum. So, any 14x4 is a good 14x4. I love that little MKE Drum Co. one that I've got. And while it's a little different tonally than the snare in this video, it's still a killer power piccolo sound.
I have a Tempro snare with reinforcement hoops that my ex-wife found at a yard sale for $15. Very similar in the body of the sound. By far my favorite from the arsenal. I think someone played their soul into it before me... I know I've been doing just that.
Tempro is one of the old Japanese brands that Pearl made back in the day. They can be incredible little drums if you know what you're doing with them! I'm currently wrenching on a drum out of the same factory. I can't wait to make a little video about it. : )
Tim, that drum was 95% CACAO!!!!!! You just make all the drums sound great man. Love da channel, keep er goin'!
Thanks Clayton!
Would love a video of how you make your loops!!
Thatâs a good idea!
I LOVE THIS!, I am a huge fan of 8 lug snares, I use 13"s mainly and I have a brass snare that is CHONKY so I 100% agree with you man!!
Thanks for the love! I love a good 13" brass snare. I'll bet that smacks!
GREAT SNARE WELL PLAYED ENOUGH SAID
Thanks Michael!
timbo my friend you are definitely what youtube needed LOL
Man, thank you! hahaha Big love!!
Absolutely love it!!!!! I have a Pearl piccolo snare 13âx3.5â that Iâve had for 20 years. Bought it on sale from musicians friend for 89$ I have it tuned very high and tight. It has a snap and crack like no other. That Ludwig down beat snare sounds fantastic. I would absolutely love to own one myself
Is your piccolo the old like dark grey-ish blue one? Because those are sleeper drums. Theyâre cheap. They arenât flashy visually either. But man, do they sound good! Haha
@@timbofromkeno yes thatâs the exact drum!!! I was in a ska/punk band and that snare was perfect. Throw of the snare wires for a great timbale sound as well. Iâm just subscribed to your channel,
@@mattryan6886 Thanks for subscribing! And itâs so funny you say you used it in a punk and ska band. Because here in between Chicago and Milwaukee, Iâll bet have the punk and ska drummers has that snare in the early 2000s when I was cutting my teeth in the scene. đđđđ
@@timbofromkeno Iâm from upstate NY in between Rochester and Syracuse. When I heard Leftover Crack, INDK, Choking Victim, morning glory, operation ivy I was all about that music, jumped in with both feet into punk rock. That Pearl piccolo snare was cheap and sounded great and clearly well built since itâs lasted 20 years getting beat like it owes me money. I did have to replace 1 lug, however I called Pearl and they actually sent me 2 new replacement lugs.
@@mattryan6886 Man, youâre bringing me back with all those bands. I donât know if you heard, but I guess Tim Armstrong and Jesse Michaels are making music again. Itâs got me pumped!!
I have a Downbeat snare in the gold sparkle finish. Mine cracks like you wouldnât believe! And yes, very versatile. Love it!
They're so great. I had one in silver sparkle that went SUPER gold (like ginger ale)--does that make our drums siblings? lol Thanks for the kind words, Jeff!
@@timbofromkeno so mine is sort of in between silver and gold and champagne. How would I know for sure?
@@jeffbrown8821 Pull off a head and see what color the drum is underneath where the drumhead collar is. That spot hasnât been touched by sun in decades, so itâll be about as close to the original color as youâre going to find!

hahahaha Thanks dude!
Thatâs a beautiful drum. Dark chocolate for me. Iâd love to see you do something with rdavidr. Great stuff.
Thanks Ethan! Love me some dark chocolate. And on the rdavidr thing, what do you envision me doing? I'd be curious! I'm hoping to do a video next month where me and my drum fixer upper friend go over bearing edges and modifying drums a bit, but I'm totally open to other ideas too!
@@timbofromkeno Iâm not exactly sure, but Iâm envisioning you two putting your heads together and coming up with some crazy cool modified/custom/off-the-wall drums. I feel like both of you have such enthusiasm for weird and wonderful drums that you could figure something out. I know thatâs not super helpful, but maybe that can spark an idea.

I appreciate ya, Mark!
Hey Timbo! I think than this downbeat and the jazz combo small brother are really great sounding drums! Donât really think them as a underrated, they r expensive and rare models. Another great model in this kind of strange inches itâs the brand new (discontinued) Supralite 15x5â. Hope u can try one! I paid 130$ for one in Reverb. Love to see this content, Timbo! See ya
Those Supralites are super underrated. I really want to find one of the 14x4 models one day. Those are also really hard to find. And I feel like people overlook the Downbeat 14x4/Jazz Combo 13x3 because they think about the Jazz Fest (if they're looking at wood snares). People even think about the Auditorium or School Fest or whatever else they called the 14x6.5" wood drums. But for whatever reason, under mics, I can get just as much (or more) body out of a good 14x4 as I would out of a 5" or 6.5"+ depth drum. Just something special about these!
I had a pancake snare years ago with similar lugs. After years of high tuning the offset lugs started to twist. I will only buy snare drums with logs that are in line with each other.
Yeahhhh. That can happen. I totally get it!
Milk chocolate. Also this made me second guess selling my wood snare that I donât use often :o
Yes! And I totally get it. Variety is the spice of life! đđ

Your pocket is really deep. It reminds me of Abe Laboriel Jr.! But the way you talk reminds me of Matty Mathesonđ.

Good afternoon, I would be interested in purchasing the Ludwig Black Diamond pearl 4 x 14 in snare drum dated 1959 if you can tell me who to get in touch with? JW Millerâ€
Hey JW. Thanks for the comment. Unfortunately, the drum isnât for sale right now. I wish you the best in your search!
@@timbofromkeno thanks for responding to me. I had a downbeat snare in 1964 when like everybody else I was doing Beatle covers. But I made a mistake in selling it, because I thought they would keep producing them. I've been a drum dealer for 61 years, got a lot of expensive stuff second Warehouse. That I don't use because it's 74 I learned a long time ago you don't drag the good stuff in the local Watering Hole!
@@jwmiller9089 That's often a hard lesson to learn. hahaha

@@timbofromkeno Ha! Nice! Right on!

Thanks! Theyâre generally referred to as reinforcement rings or âre-rings.â
@@timbofromkeno I meant whatâs the brand name of the ring that sits on the snare drum to dampen the sound.
@@chuckc7375 I apologize! Thatâs the Roots EQ ring. Adam Topol, Jack Johnsonâs drummer, is one of the dudes who owns that company. Theyâre wonderful. Worth a google!

@@jeffkahl Yo, thank you, dude. I appreciate it. This drum was a lot of fun to play around with!
I had one in champagne sparkle. I Miss that loud, open + cracking tone.
That's such a great finish. My first vintage kit was a champagne sparkle Super Classic kit. I only paid a couple hundred bucks for it. It was a beater, but at least the finish was cool! lol
Right on. My 1st kit was a 60s Ludwig with the matching 4x14" snare... Jazz sizes. Miss that kit
@@doublea7054 I'll bet it was a sweet little set of drums!
Milk chocolate girl. Let us know how you're recording/processing/mixing your kit if you get a chance.
Will do! Itâs definitely on my list of vids to make. Thanks Caroline!
I own two. Both 1966 and all original(one Black Diamond Pearl and one Champaign(Bermuda Sand) Sparkle. I also own a few 3 1/2"x 13" Ludalloy Piccolos(YES they are, IN FACT, 3 1/2" deep). These shallower drums voice "CRACKS" in a unique way. I'm quite surprised Ludwig is not remaking this iconic drum, complete with original offset #2225 lug.Somebody could make alotta 'dough' if they reproduced #2225 lugs(typically, IMPOSSIBLE to find). Photo's on the 'Blind Faith' album cover picture's Ginger Baker with one. On the topic of 'recreating' this drum's sound and feel, Used Ludwig 3ply w re-ring Tom Tom shells are readily available to cut down and reinstall the re-rings. I have done this and the opportunity to more precisely 'bearing edge & snare bed' produces a better than factory shell(I actually took the hardware off my BDP and installed it on a Maple/Poplar/Maple Re-Wrapped BOP shell I cut down(of course I keep the original shell. PRECISE and more predictable! I THINK offset lugs are essential(keep it to 8(OR 6! for 'FATTER' response).
Trust Me,
Ted Furlo
Ted! I haven't heard many other people praise (or even know about) those Ludalloy piccolo snares from the 70s. I LOVE those drums. Incredible versatile--much more so than the newer 13x3 Black Beauty snares. I wish they would reproduce them too!
@@timbofromkeno Curiously/ coincidentally I ran across photos that I had forgotten about (of various Drum(stash) pictures over the years. Remember the Tama mahogany ones from the 90âs? Not as a tasty of a waffle but pancakey nonetheless
They did like 14x3 snares. Rad stuff!!
I'm not a drummer, but to me it sounded more..... Snappier, like a sharper CRACK sound. If that makes sense at all. It sounded good đ€
Very much snappier! It's funny how a drummer's ear changes over 5, 10, 20+ years of playing. We hear the most acute things in the tonality of drums, and sometimes we forget that when people listen to our music, they just hear a drum. Nothing more. hahaha I guess with drummers, it's similar to how some people get picky about wine, cars, home furnishings, or anything else.
@@timbofromkeno Lol I know what you mean. I'm not a drummer, but I've been playing guitar for quite a long time. Sometimes I'll be trying to adjust settings on this and that , and somebody will be like, just turn it down a bit, there's too much noise being crammed into my bedroom. đđ€
@@righty-o3585 You know, then! hahaha
@@timbofromkeno Lol I do đ€
Great sounding snare but nowhere near underrated IMHO. Prices quite tell the story.
I have a 3x13 Ludwig Piccolo, very early 60s, in Black Galaxy Sparkle, which came with its matching Jazzette kit (proper 12x18 BD as well) and that sounds killer to the point I often pick it over my Supras and Acros.
Nice and rare 70s Green Sparkle Downbeat I see there... 60s/70s Green Sparkle wrap with zero fading looks like a miracle to me... rewrap?
Cheers man!
You'd be surprised how many people just haven't heard of the Downbeat! Most folks just see the Jazz Fest, think Ringo, and go for that. But there's something special about the 14x4. And the 13x3 is great too. And the little green sparkle kit is a rewrap--only way I could afford putting one together. haha
gimmie some maple syruupppp
YESSSSS!
Did you endorse any drum brand?
I've never had an official drum endorsement, actually, no. I have relationships several manufacturers (both drums and cymbals), but the only official endorsement I carry is for accessories with D'Addario (Evans heads, ProMark sticks, and PureSound wires).

Of course is not in any fashion an underrated snare! A tad on the rare side and betting itâd fetch over 500 and possibly closer to a grand in auction!
I think itâs underrated simply because theyâre harder to find than some other models of the time. And theyâre overshadowed by the Jazz Fest too imo. Pricing-wise, itâs crazy how much these go for now. I used to pick them up for 350-450 all day. And now, rarer finishes are upwards of $2k now. Blows my mind! đđ
