Having had both, i returned the SB-1000 to get the PB-1000. I like the ported subwoofer as it has a definite punch, louder and it works well with different genres of listening. The only downside is its size! It's hugeeee for a small room like mine!

    • @cheongmj
      @cheongmj Před 3 lety +5

@@azzabouy8243 I use it mostly for movies. About 60% movies and 40% for music. It depends on the type of music you listen to. The SB-1000 performed really well for orchestra, jazz or music with deep vocals/strings/instruments but lacked the punch that the PB-1000 could deliver for most genres of music. SB-1000 has little presence and may sound a little flat from my experience.

hey bud, I’ve been in a dilemma on this for a while. And wanted to ask why you kept the pb 1000 pro? I watch movies and play games but also listen to a lot of music (and music I mostly listen to has a lot of bass like house and hiphop etc). Is the sb 1000 really that much better for music? I am leaning towards the pb 1000 pro but im just thinking of whether or not it wud be the better choice. Please advise on reasons why u kept the pb. As someone who listens to music basically every hour of the day, and watches I'd say 3 movies a week, I have to go with the PB-1000. I just NEED that frequency response. And the quality is not far away from the SB-1000. Plus I'm guessing it's a bit louder and I do love my loud parties.

Peachtree M25 in bamboo, Emotiva BasX S8, Denon CD player, Audio Technica LPW40 using a VM95SH through a Tube Box DS using Genanlex tubes. The SB1000 is exactly what I need.

@@TJ-xk1dy Tight clean bass that was easy to blend into my setup. I have it in a 13 by 14 room and it fills the room with a nice amount of bass. The size of the sub makes placement super easy and it being sealed. Blending them into my setup to my taste was by far the easiest sub I've ever worked with. I really want to hear the SB2000 now. I tend to lean a little more on the elevated bass side then flat. I am very happy with purchase and would easily recommend the SB1000.

SVS SB-XXXX : For Music Systems .. tighter, faster, more precise bass, and more convenient to place because it has a smaller footprint.
SVS PB-XXXX : For Home Theaters .. Bigger, deeper bass .. a bit less precise but oh so generous ! And yeah, bigger in size (bigger cabinet = deeper bass).

I own the PB1000 for more than 1 year, almost daily use for music especially with a Marantz amp and Dali speakers in a stereo system...why did I choose PB and not regret it(tested both before buying)? The ported version gave me more depth, soundstage to complement the system I have so as an advice for anyone “struggling” in a decision process...I wouldn’t label them as “for music-for movies” it’s important the balance to the system that you own...you want to FEEL the lows in every pore? My guess is far from it. The cabinet is actually very large for a driver of that size. So there will be little to no pressure being created inside which is what makes a sealed enclosure sound more precise. I think all you'd do is make it quieter and rob it of some extension.

Was just looking for something to bring more oumph at the very low end, and to be frank, I would absolutely recommend a subwoofer even for music. Seems to make everything pop.
I would recommend A/B, if you don't care about the size aspect. Secondly, check on SVS return policies, which are quite generous. 45 days money back guarantee (and they pay return shipping) IIRC. If you buy local, ask them, I'm sure they wouldn't have issues with you returning the one you don't like.
They also do a one year upgrade. If you want to upgrade a year later, you can return yours (you pay for return shipping), and they'll refund the price you paid. But check with them to be sure.

Great review and video. Side story: a long time ago, like maybe back in 1999ish, I went to a local home theater group meetup in the area. The guy hosting it was showing us some prototypes of some diy powered subwoofers he was working on in his spare time. Explained why he was doing it and gave everyone a good demo. We were all floored by the power of this powered sub. Well a couple years later he left his career in the military and started up a company with a friend and they called it SVS.
These were their early cylinder looking subwoofers. Looked like water heaters. It’s a shame they no longer sell that style.

I was also considering the pc4000 for it's small footprint but that price point has me looking at ported models from other brands such as the Rythmik FV18 which is only 22 inches deep. In comparing a 13.5" sub to a 18" servo sub that weighs a 100 lb more, I really think I'm going to get a better value with the 18".

The sharp roll of for ported subs just isnt worth it and thats coming from someone who had a pb2000pro for 2 years prior i hoped that pb 4000 or at least a pb16 wouldnt have those problems but alas it seems to be inherent port design weakness, if you one its only real weakness. I decide to try the sb16 two of them and was amazed that they still had the cleaness of the sb4000 and fast response. I would say the sb4000s were more than enough and its not that much of an upgrade to sb16d but i just more headroom and they made such could deal on getting two (35% off) i couldn't say no. I would suggest get a sb4000 and when you can get another one it will improve the peaks nulls better than ported will without the horrible cliff lose of ouput after the port frequency that causes those horrible noises. Giving more even bass at different seating, more output thats cleaner with more headroom and because sealeds dont have sharp roll off that extra db from two allows them to dig a lot deeper into 10hz range than a ported could ever dream doing. • @laurentbonnefoy4451
      @laurentbonnefoy4451 Před 3 lety +1

Having 2 subs is almost always better than 1 just because 1 sub is unable to completely fill a room without holes and picks in the listening experience and it's pretty annoying when you notice it (I just have one sub and there is no way to get a perfect rendering of the bass cos moving just a bit change the result). One eventual exception being maybe if you sit right next to the sub, you will get all the bass rendering but you will also know where the bass come from, maybe ok for movies but less fun for music. Except if the 2 subs really sucks compared to the one, just go for 2. PB-3000 is like an ultimate choice to me, having 2 of those, you will be totally satisfaied. There are 2 main downsides of the PB-1000, one being that you cannot use the mobile app and it helps a lot to get the full potential of the subs (also easy control in real time cos no remote) and work with the weaknesses of the room. Saying that, 2 subs usually will help with annoying resonances compared to 1 sub. Second weakness of the PB-1000 is that PB-3000 has more impact and it will give you chest impact, 2 PB-1000 cannot give really chest impact and also won't reach as deep in bass, but except for great organ, the difference will be minimal to non-existent for music, from movies it's more noticable. PB-3000 will also give better quality bass in some other frequencies regions. Saying all this, to me, the advantages of 2 does beat the advantages of 1 more expensive. Only the lack of app is the big downside, never know when there will eventually be a PB-1000 pro. You can use a DSPeaker Antimode 8033 to replace partially the app if the resonnances are too much of a problem, but it has a cost and cannot match the app open controls. If for money is acceptable, go for 2 PB-2000 Pro and except a little less chess impact and little less bass quality rendering, it will be much beyond PB-1000 with most advantages of the PB-3000.

I just received my sb1000 that I’m going to pair with two b1+ from emotiva. Will be testing them tonight. I had an entire 5.1 system from svs the prime line along with the pb2000 and a rythmik fvx12. To say the least the rythmik dominates the pb2000 in every way imaginable. I found out I don’t like surround and I much prefer two channel with or without a sub it depends on the speakers. The svs prime bookshelves with the pb2000 wasn’t bad but I didn’t like it a lot. Then I did the bookshelves with the rythmik(this is after trying both subs on 5.1 and now to 2.1) and I felt like the quality of the bass far surpassed the quality of everything else coming from the speakers. So I ordered two psa mtm 210t towers and I paired them with the rythmik and I’m in heaven. I have an odd shaped room and wish I could buy a second rythmik but holy shit it sounds incredible for what it is. So I have my expensive system now and then two b1+ with sb1000. I have no one to share this hobby with except for my girlfriend so here I am writing a comment no one will read.

@@HomeTheaterHobbyist I have the emotiva’s and the svs sb1000 and I’m very impressed for the price of around $650 for all three products. It’s incredible what a budget sound system can sound like. It’s only powered by my denon avr s650h and no distortion or clipping that I can audibly hear.
Anyways the major difference between svs and psa was the overall presentation and presence. I’m not extremely versed in all the words some audiophiles use but psa has depth, imaging and mid bass that is incomparable to a bookshelf speaker of such a low price and since the psa are 98db efficient there is no ceiling to the volume for any mortal human within a reasonable room. For music games and movies psa is great. But they’re not great for near field listening. Since they use horns they are directional and to experience them fully you need to be at least 10 feet away probably. I don’t currently have the primes but I do have the b1+ now and I can compare. The emotivas are prettier for softer music and compliment vocals so well I don’t want to admit that $200 speakers sound prettier than almost $3000. But for pretty much most other music like hard rock, rap, edm then along with games and movies the psa is the clear winner by miles. Especially because they’re complimented by an $1100 rythmik rather than svs’s cheapest possible sub. Anyways, I love both systems to say the least! I even tried a $1250 Sonos system including the beam, two ones and the sub mini. It sucked nuts compared to actual “audiophile” speakers. Which is clearly a subjective word but, you get the point. On that note the sub mini directly compared to sb1000, svs is much better and it’s literally $30 cheaper on the outlet page. Anyways I’m going down a rabbit hole.

Well, last year I needed a new sub, so I decided to go pay them a visit to demo a few subs only to find out that they have no retail space, nor do they have any local distributors. The closet store that carried any of their products was in Cleveland Ohio, about an hour and a half away. I did eventually order a PB1000 from an online distributor, and when I received it, the info on the subwoofer said made in China. The subwoofer is a very good sounding sub, quality construction, if I were to ever purchase another sub, I would definitely consider this brand again, but it just kind of gets me that they don't have ANY type of retail support in the city that they are based in. 😔

    To those reading the comments:
    Fact -
Sealed: more even response, smooth rolloff, less output, plays deeper but much quieter at lowest frequencies, easier to EQ.
Ported: likely peak at tuning frequency, louder than sealed at and around tuning frequency, almost useless below tuning frequency, similar to sealed an actave above tuning, larger group delay, sharp rolloff below tuning frequency, useful response all the way down to tuning frequency with no EQ (unlike sealed)
The BIG BUT: the sealed SB1000 has a 12" driver instead of a 10" and that makes a very big difference.
    Opinion
I love ported subs myself but between these two go for the SB 1000. The larger driver almost makes up for the lack of port and the PB 1000 with its tiny 10" driver won't really give you "that rumble" in movies even though it has a port. Neither one will but the 12" SB1000 will be more competent in more scenarios than the PB1000. The PB will be louder at a few select frequencies but will overall be worse in both output and accuracy.
In this comparison the sealed sub is a clear winner imo.

I don't see the point of listening to audio samples on youtube... you're always going to hear only what your own physical speakers can reproduce. How does that tell you that the sampled subwoofer is actually better than the other then?

Can you hear a difference between the two?
The point here is to hear the relative difference not absolute.

Not sure if you know what you're talking about, but your videos are well done... But I cannot understand why anyone who supposedly "knows enough" to be reviewing audio gear would ever think that recording "demos" makes any damn sense at all. As if us watching these vids are actually hearing what you heard in your room? Maybe I'm missing something... but I don't think so, lol.

Thanks for watching. I add audio to videos for 3 main reasons:
      1. Some people want to hear the audio even if it’s not the same.
      2. Audio comparisons between two or more speakers are useful because it allows the listener to hear the relative difference between the speakers. Obviously it’s not exactly what I hear in my room but relative to one another.
      3. The medium of video allows audio playback. Growing up reading print publications either magazines or on the Web didn’t include audio only pictures so I think it’s nice to take advantage of the medium.

I'm mostly a home theater guy,but I'd have to choose the SB1000 because of the much smaller size.

I'd rather a musical sub for movies than a ht sub for music.

To the guy presenting this video: whilst I appreciate the warmth of your voice, why do you speak so low, as like you are afraid not to wake up someone sleeping next to you? :)

I've built several sub-woofers, none of which cost less than $500 in components, so a $500 off-the-shelf sub-woofer is crap. End of "review". My cheap Dayton Titanic III 12" sub was $320-ish (used) for the driver, $350-ish for the 500 watt amp and over $150 in plywood (all 3/4" mostly double layered). Built, it weighs about 180-200 lbs. It's an adequate home theater/music sub with a response of 17-50 Hz +/- 2 dB @ 119 dB crossed to my choice of two sets of MT speakers, one set is far more music oriented and analytical, the other more relaxed and forgiving of source material. If you can BUILD a good sounding sub-woofer for less than a dollar a pound, you should get a write up in the top audio magazines. If you can BUY one for less than five dollars a pound, it's a miracle like a pink unicorn.
