  • In this video I go in detail explaining what exactly Family Sharing is and how to set it up on your iOS devices. It's a great way for families to share content and at the same time is the best way for parents to watch over what their kids are able to download or even purchase. Setting the correct settings will guarantee to save you a world of headache by preventing unwanted purchases, loss of data, and a lot more. Lot of content to cover so watch til the end and will even link to my next video that explains Screen Time and what is is (Parental Controls) and how you can set it up.

Hey super helpful video thank you I was just wondering when sharing the iCloud storage like say your sharing 200GB with a family member do you both now have 200GB each or you both share the same 200GB

You both share the 200 GB. This is still a lot of storage depending on what you guys are saving, but it's still a good deal. If you guys go over the 200 GB you can look at the 1 TB, and even though it's more expensive it's still not a bad deal either for what you get.

Thanks for a very helpful video. I've been scouring You Tube for a presentation like yours - great work! I've got some questions as a newbie to Apple (that will show my ignorance.)
We're retired and just got Apple watches requiring iPhones. We're Android/Windows refugees. We're empty nesters so our needs are pretty simple.
My mission is to use the iCloud Family feature to set up two sets of basic files for my bride and me to individually store pictures, contacts, backups, et al. Sounds like I start with 200 gb plan and expand to 2 tb if needed. We each have 5gb Apple accounts, now full, so it sounds easy to just select the applications we want in the Family Plan in the set up menu and it's on to the 200gb iCloud system.
    Here goes:
Are the photo files assessable to reorganize into different folders or to attach to emails once in the iCloud?
Can I download iCloud files to an external hard drive for my own backup?
Does Apple harvest us and our data as Google does?
Does Apple become the owner of our files?
Can download Audible Book files to the iCloud?
Thanks for your patience ahead of time and again for your clarifying video.
    John

Hello, and I'll do my best to answer your questions:
Are the photo files... reorganize into different folders? - I'm not sure exactly what you mean, but I think you mean can you organize the photos and yes you can. Here's a link that should help - support.apple.com/en-us/HT207368 - read over this and if you still have questions let me know
Can I download iCloud files to an external drive? - Yes, you can download anything in the iCloud to your hard drive and then save it. There's multiple ways to do this, but you probably are most interested in photos, so read over this and it shows you exactly how to download photos and other items from the iCloud and from there you can back them up externally - support.apple.com/en-us/HT209454
Does Apple harvest your info? - No, that's the one nice thing about Apple, they do not sell your data or share it.
Does Apple own your files? - that's more of a esoteric question/answer - you still own them, Apple has no copyright claim to anything you save, but you are acknowledging they have the right to review your stuff. Keep in mind why though. Apple does not want to be a 'hub' of storing illegal photos/videos, etc., so you do have to understand that your data is private but not unseen. However, keep in mind they don't have employees scouring your photos, it's not like that at all, no employee would have access to it, but they have software in place that can detect some things.
Not sure what you mean by the Audible books. Do you mean upload Audible books to the iCloud to be saved? You can in theory, you might need to search the web for more on that though.
Just be sure you and your bride don't ever share an Apple ID, that's the worst decision of all time when it comes to Apple products. I have videos up on the iCloud and Apple ID's where I go into great detail on how they work and it might help you learn a bit more. Thanks for your questions!

Good question and the answer should be a 'yes', but it depends on just a few things in regards to family sharing settings. Rather than try to explain it all I'll link an article below and if you follow it then it should work for you. The bottom line is whether or not you have 'purchase sharing' turned on. So your family members will need to have this turned on. The first article is how to download apps through family sharing, and the second article is what to do if you don't see your family member's content or purchases. Long story short though you should be able to!

We don’t get each other’s messages or anything else .. it’s just really really annoying because I change the picture and it still does it!!! 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

As long as you two aren't using the same Apple ID then that's the best start to your problem. It sounds like you aren't, because if you are using the same ID that will turn into a disaster, so I hope that's not the case. I would recommend you call Apple Support and have an advisor look at the issue with you, share screens, and let them view how your contact is saved, etc. There's just some kind of glitch, and you could start with the basics and delete the contact then add him back in. This honestly is either an easy fix or really complicated so it's best to have someone look at it with you to get a better understanding of what might be happening. The easy fix is what I mentioned, deleting then adding the contact back in, but if it's more complicated then it's because information is being shared that shouldn't, and that most likely leads to other bigger problems and there's some kind of underlying cause and that means your issue is just a symptom and not the main problem, so call Apple Support and have them take a look.

I don't care about 'clicks' but I would recommend watching the video again until it makes more sense. I would also recommend watching one of my first ever videos on 'What is an Apple ID'. It's really important you understand what the Apple ID is because the worst decision a parent can EVER MAKE when getting their child an Apple device is to use their own personal ID if you have Apple products yourself. This will lead to the worst nightmare scenarios a person can have, so to avoid this you can create an ID for your daughter and you'll make it as a child's ID, but this will be with her for a long time until she turns 18, then she gets full control of the ID automatically. There are articles you can read as well from Apple on creating a child's ID and if you take your time reading them it will make sense, Apple does a good job in giving step by step instructions. As for setting up the iPad that will be relatively simple. Once your daughter's ID is created you then follow the prompts on each screen and you'll sign into the iPad using the ID you made for her. I never made a video that went into making kid's ID's so I can't recommend anything I've done but Apple really does have good articles for you to read over on how kid's ID's work. If you get to a point and you're stuck and have a more specific question to ask I'll do my best to answer.
