This helped with making my SDR content look tremendously better. No more color banding and colors really pop on my Epson 5040UB. Thank you Gene and team!
Thanks Gene, Happy New Year to you and your family. Have swapped over to Apple tv/Apple Music coz of you. Really enjoying the Atmos mixes. Only problem is now i wanna upgrade my surrounds!
Hi,
Would like to say a big thank you for set up of Apple 4K, since taking your direction on setup I have found that CZcams is not buffering between adverts/commercials while watching videos.
This was caused by setting the Apple to 4K HDR 50/60hz and was frustrating me for months, so once again a big thank you.
If you have a video on how to set up the best Dolby Atmos on a Yamaha RX-A3080 with a 5.1.4 Dolby Atmos setup I would be very pleased to watch and learn and have my system sounding just like it should.
Once again thank you and have a wonderful New Year.
This was very helpful…just updated the settings on both my Apple TVs. Thanks Gene!!
I’ve been impressed with the implementation of Atmos music with the Apple TV. Very nice for those of us with home theaters.
I just got the latest 128Gb version for Christmas. I just upgraded from the 2017 4K version. Apple did a great job of keeping the older versions up to date. The only difference I noticed between the two is when watching CZcams in 4K 60fps. The older version would down scale to 1440p 60fps.
Very helpful video! The atmos now sounds incredible 😎 Thanks for the video Gene
Love when Gene goes back to basics.
Thanks Gene, another great video.
Luckily it seems I had the settings you recommended.
Happy New Year 🥳
Great show as usual. I really liked this as I was using the wrong setup. So much better. Thanks, Richard
Hello Sir Gene! THANK YOU so very much for documenting your recommended settings! I spent most of 2022 building a new dedicated theater in my home. Two of the components of my theater are the 3rd generation Apple 4k & a new Epson LS12000. I was a bit disappointed with this matchup due to a several second (up to several minute) Delay when switching from one CZcams Video to another, or switching from CZcams to Netflix, etc. BUT…, using YOUR settings, those annoying delays are History! My sincere thanks Sir!
Thank you I had multiple settings wrong for years . Randomly came across this video and now I know .
Great video Gene. One more consideration for next time is to speak to the Apples support of HDR10+. There is actually a growing amount of content in this newer dynamic HDR format. It is only supported on the Gen 3 Apple TV and does require the AVR support of HDMI 2.1. I just upgraded my Denon 8500H with the new 8K board.
Great information, thanks! I do have a gen-3 Apple TV 4K, which I love, but I do have a question. I don't yet have an Atmos receiver, though I plan to get one. With a standard stereo setup, should I disable Dolby Atmos in the audio settings, or does Apple TV automatically down-convert the audio to match the current system setup? Cheers!
I just picked up an Apple TV 4K latest model, so this content is greatly appreciated. Also picked up the Yamaha RX A6A receiver yesterday evening, so I’m going to have some fun.
Thanks for the video. I always was worried it wasn’t configured correctly. 👍
Great Vid Gene. "Audioholic" or not, your video suggestions are right on. This video took a page right out of my brain. Keep up the video suggestions, always like hearing what you have to say.
I just like to say a very big thank you this is made a big difference to my Apple 4K TV watching this video I had it all set up wrong and now everything is going great thank you very much
Thanks for another informative video, Gene! I have a Sony A80J and Denon X4700H AVR. My TV has all the streaming services built in. Would the sound and picture quality improve if I also got the Apple TV. I primarily stream Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Apple TV+. I am new to this and do not fully understand how this technology works. Thanks again!
Thank you! I use an Apple TV (2nd gen) but was not aware of those settings
Amazing video! Thank you sooooo much. This solved my problem. Could not get Netflix app to work correctly on Apple TV. Now it does! Thanks again!
AppleTV 4K Settings
•Format: 4K SDR 50 or 60Hz
•HDMI Output: YCbCr
•Chroma: 4:4:4 (if you have sufficient bandwidth)
•Match Content: Dynamic Range and Frame Rate
•Audio: Change Format Off; Dolby Atmos On
Thank you
Hi there, thank you so much for this video, it helped me to set the correct video setting, l previously set to 4K HDR 4.2.2 and gave me screen backout 5 seconds every time l change videos, now ok thanks alot
Gene,
Another interesting and informative video. I am using a 2021 Roku Ultra for streaming duties on my Sony OLED/Denon AVR in the living room and a Roku 4K Express on the Sony LED/Polk soundbar w/sub in the master bedroom.
Happy New Year to you and your family!
Thanks Brother , I needed this video. Perfect timing.
Should I connect the Apple TV 4K device into my TV HDMI or to my Denon 3600H receiver HDMI? Thanks for the video!
Had mine set wrong! Thank-you!
Thanks Gene, as always is great to have the support and suggestions from specialist like you, But what about the TV´s that automatic select the best output format? especially uf I have disable Dolby Visión or HDR disable, because I enable SDR format as you suggest. Thanks again and keep watching and listening. This is Paco from Mexico
Great timing! I just bough an Apple TV over the Christmas break. I love the user experience. It's the perfect combination of Apple ease of use and geeky setup options such as the ability to match content.
Sadly, my Marantz 7702 doesn't support HDR. I either need a workaround or a new processor.
How bad would a Receiver with pre-outs be? I really don't want to spend $3000 on a Processor that will become outdated in a few years because of some new HDMI standard.
Thanks for the audio portion. As for the Dolby Vision, that is the native mode for my LG TV, so it works much better with that option enabled. Picture quality with pass through a Yamaha RX-A4A is outstanding. It's much better video, with the same settings, than my previous AVR Marantz (SR5012).
Mr. DellaSalla,
I've been wanting one of the Apple TV units sense you first spoke of them, but I wonder how would it benefit my system. I'm just a nearly flat broke bugger and I only have an older Onkyo 5.1.2 and an old Sharp Aqous 70" 1080P.
Thanks a million for all that you do and I wish you and yours all of the very best in the new year!
Thanks, good tips. 4K SDR and match content!!
Nice clear explanation of what setting to use and why - some of them counter intuitive for me - this is a good help. thanks
Excellent information. Thank you!
Thank you for this most informative tutorial!
Good stuff, thanks for these tips! I had mine slightly off and I see quite the difference now. BTW 1889 is awesome :)
thanks Gene from Australia.i have Atmos on the anthem avm70 this helped out a lot.
Thanks Gene. Just set this all up.
I love my Apple TV. I hook it using a pair of HomePods and for a small room it does an amazing job for Atmos. And music is great.
great video...not sure though if I am doing something wrong, but I don't see 60hz whenI press info on my remote for the receiver, I see atoms, but only 4k 30 hz, I know my tv has 4k 60 hertz
but boy it sure does sound and look good, the dolby vision notification does pop up now when entering a movie that has it
thanks
Thank you for the tips on the settings on ATV, but what about on the AVR? What sound and video settings should I set there? Pure? Direct? Dolby….
Great video. I would like my Trinnov to do the processing and not the Apple TV unit. Is this possible as all I see are apCM settings and not bitstream 🤔
I learned a lot, Thanks ! On my Marantz 7015, with Apple 4k Box set to SDR, is RGB the same as 4:4:4 ?
Hello Sir I want to say thank you I love your show it very informative! My question to you is I’m about to pull the trigger and upgrade to a S95C tv and my concern is that my AVR Denon 4500H will it be compatible? It’ll be hooked up alone just for audio I’m currently running a 7.1.4 will it work or do I need to upgrade my AVR?
Thanks for an excelllent and imformative video!
That’s pretty cool. I was just looking for a way to have my sound bar. Turn on whenever my TV turns on since it doesn’t turn on after I install the Apple TV.
I think automatic mode should work and streaming services can of course stream their material with several different frame frequencies . Surely the best thing should be for Apple TV to send in the same frame rate that the streamed material contains
Thanks Gene, really helpful. One additional tip is to make sure ‘Reduce loud sounds’ is set to ‘No’ in the audio settings, to maintain full dynamic range.
There are also settings in the ‘App settings’ for Music where you can switch to lossless and Dolby Atmos as automatic.
I wish Apple put that on the slide out screen that users access any time (I forget what that is called). So then, if you live in an apartment, don't want to wake the kids or just want to have a less booming experience, you can turn on reduce bass quickly.
Such an amazing video
Very good good stuff thank you this was something I really needed to know thank you
Hi This was really helpful. I set my Samsung TV to your settings. I don't have Dolby Atmos on my Soundbar. Is it a good idea to set it to Auto or Dolby 5.1 surround?
Thank you. Could you plz advise how to set it up for Sony HT-A9 ?
Notice the Marantz font color changes depending on SDR/HDR/DV. The standard font color is used for SDR, orange for HDR, and green for DV. The OSD color will reflect which format is being decoded (change volume for example while watching).
I wonder if you would consider doing Roku version of this video.
Great video glad you fixed you money problems.
Simple solution that provided a great audio video experience out from my Apple TV
Thanks a lot Gene. I was surprised to see that input/output information that you showed in your video. I bought the Anthem MRX-1140 that you reviewed, I was wondering if you've been able to get that information and how ? Thanks again. I can't wait to watch Last of us tonight.
In the middle of watching the Expanse on Amazon. Picture and sound is on point. Sci fi science is decent
I set it up with my iPhone. The Apple TV asked “Home or My Home”? Which should I choose Home or My Home? Great video!
If I only have a 5.1 setup, is there an advantage to using Dolby Atmos or should I just keep it at Change Format and choice Dolby Digital? Thanks!
Curious what you think the TV audio settings should be for the HDMI input ...bitstream or PCM? I'm using two HomePods in left and right configuration.
Apple has some great stuff I have to give credit to them. Great video
Thanks a lot!! This was what I needed, no more oversaturated cover art in Plex, perfect playback in 1080p, 2160 4k HDR or Dolby vision ... I almost threw out the ATV
Dolby atmos / Spatial Audio music worked out of the box for me with the latest software update they have on there. Yet to check HD as I don’t have a 4K tv yet.
I like before I watch every time
Do you need to turn on Dolby on even if you don’t have the extra speakers or even receiver with Dolby atmos?
I have the new apple 4K too. I do like the new remote too..and I just got the Yamaha A8A. Bad ass..
12:49 I knew I set this thing up right. Those are my exact settings. I had mess around with for a little while, but this is the end result for my setup.
Please can you show these settings on an nvidia shield pro…thnx
Does Denon/Marantz “height virtualization” actually do anything for a room like mine with mechanical intrusions that ruin the placement of atmos height channels?
Thanks Gene, when setting mine up it didn’t switch to HDR or DV after being set at 4K SDR. Any ideas?
great review!!!!!
Do you recommend using an audio extractor like OREI 429 to try to get Atmos to work off a tv that has only arc but soundbar has earc capabilities?
Might be a dumb question if you have Apple TV built in to your tsp
You still recommend having the separate Apple TV unit?
Thanks a lot!!!
Hello can I ask You 1 question:)? I have the apple 4k tv box, denon avr x1700h with a samsung qled TV. 5.1 serup with kef q750 and rel 1205 II. I don’t understand why the avr shows multi in when playing mostly everything? Why not dolby dig + D sorround? What multi in means? Regards great chanel
If I have a non Dolby Atmos soundbar, should I set the audio to change format “on” and select Dolby Digital 5.1 or leave change format to off?
Question. I have a 2022 samsung qn75qn800b 8k tv and the new denon x4800h. Do you recommend having the peripherals for ex. Apple 4k tv directly to the avr or is it OK to pass through the tv? What are the pros and cons for each way?
In my setup I connect apple tv 4k to a 1080p projector. And I wanna connect apple tv 4k wireless to samsung q990b and I wonder if you can get dolby atmos via airplay or bluetooth.
Can i use 9.1 setup with the Apple tv? Got marantz sr7011 with all 11 speakers on and 2 subwoofer
I have an Apple TV 4K and on the video side everything is the same per you're wonderful video but a couple months ago I saw that I had ‘change format’ Setting on, which enabled HDR+ to be visible on the screen. I changed this to change format off after I read the explanatory comments on the screen where it said I would get better audio quality and It did get a lot better because it's PCM, uncompressed. But I lost the HDR plus functionality. Everything I now get is in Dolby Atmos which probably also means ‘Dolby Vision’ otherwise when it's not available I get PCM which I convert to Dolby surround. Is this all correct about HDR? what am I missing? Are the newer Apple TV boxes the same in this area? By chance is the sound quality better from the latest additions? I like HDR because it brightens up things really nicely.
The Apple TV Interface in this area is horrifying. Why the hell is it so awful?
I have my LGCXOLED TV plugged into the eArc HDMI input on my Denon AVR-760. Everything else on my system also runs through the Denon AVR to the speakers (DVD player. CD player, PS, etc) Where should I plug in the Apple TV using the HDMI cable? I didn't see that covered. Thanks!
Thanks Gene!
Great Video
Your tuff man Gene! Making ur brother wait until you released this video to get his info!!
What does it mean if I had the blinking and 1 second black outs when I was on HDR and after switching to SDR it was no longer doing that and worked smoothly. Is that a cable issue?
Have you experienced no sound on prime and Netflix with non atmos audio, when atmos is on in settings? I have to go into setting and turn off atmos to get sound
Great video. ? I have a room that’s about 12x26. I’m looking to a subwoofer. My budget is $2,000 can recommend one for me. I would like to go with 2 but not sure at the budget I can at the moment
Thank you
Have you got a nvidia shield version of this video?
Does wanting HDR10+ for Samsung TV's change any of these settings?
Thanks Gene for the informative video. I've been watching Apple TV on my JVC RS-2000 projector, and after following your recommendation to switch to SDR settings, I've noticed much better contrast and color saturation on the Apple TV main screen, where all the apps are displayed. It's very interesting.
Do you know why HDR is not available on the prime video app when watching through Apple TV? I've noticed that all the HDR movies are presented in SDR. Is this perhaps an app problem on Apple TV? I was just wondering if you have any information on this issue.
All the best!
wow I didn't realize that but will check it out. thanks
Hi Gene, I am debating whether to buy Apple TV which is just a player or a Mac mini which is a full fledged computer and can do lot more than just playing media. In my AV journey of 25 years I have seen many “media players” becoming redundant but a computer can remain useful way beyond that.
The question that I have is can I get the same feature as Apple TV? Will I get Dolby Atmos out from its HDMI port? And lossless audio in similar way? Or will I have to stick to Apple TV for this?
We have Apple Store recently opened in my city but I don’t think those folks can answer such questions authoritatively.
Thanks in advance.
Pushkar
I don't have a surround set up I just use Kef q950 as mains in a stereo set up. Yeah I was shocked at the sound in Wednesday
can you share the video of the set up
Great 👍 Video!!! Is Possible U Can Do 1 For The Amazon fire Tv Cube 3RD Gen. Alexa , Seems To Rule Everything Including My AVRX6700H! Not Good, Especially If You're Like Me And Run/ Connecte Everything Through Your Avr And Not Your Tv ( My Case The Samsung S95B!)
So do you have the ATV4K hooked directly to the receiver or the tv? If receiver is it in the eARC port or any HDMI port and how do you hook to the tv? Is it via an HDMI output to the tv?
I have got the 1st apple 4k tv box and thinking upgrade to a newer version because I find I have to turn up the av more is it just my what dose this and is the nivida sheld pro better
Gene, thanks for the tip about using SDR 4K rather than HDR 4K. Using the latter setting always makes black and white TV shows look bizarre when I am using Plex. Actually, I prefer my nVIDIA Shield, but now my first generation Apple TV 4K will be more useful.
isn't there an automatic mode and Auto Frame rate should also be there
I'm comparing apple tv to shield. What did you prefer the shield?
@@Andersljungberg Yes, the Apple TV setting matches the content’s format. So it makes no sense to use SDR over Dolby Atmos if you have a high end TV that supports it. There’s too much ignorance on this topic. 4K Dolby atmos will have your screen savers and Apple menus at 4K Dolby atmos at all times. Then it will match the format for whatever content you’re watching. WHY downgrade to SDR for the screensavers and menu? Seems dumb to me
Thank you!!!!!!!!!
Awesome!
I noticed when steaming out of my TV. The audio is very weak . Going into my surround sound system. Especially with HBO Max. Would something like apple TV. Solve that issue and give me stronger audio ?
