    The tap test is a misleading (but universally practiced) way to decide if a speaker enclosure will resonate audibly with music content.

    I heard the SVS "ULTRA EVOLUTION PINNACLE" at AXPONA and thought they had great potential. Since then I have been looking forward to a review with measurements and greatly appreciate this one! I wish you would have published a full spectrum plot but I was able to piece one together and found that these are warm speakers- really warm! The response rises by 7db from 1Khz to 70 Hz- anechoic! That is way too much bass. In-room would be even worse. Given the additional rear firing woofers in-room measurements would have been very helpful in addition to a full spectrum plot. If the SVS would have measured flatter in that region (like the Perlisten R7t or BMR Monitors) I would have pulled the trigger on them already. Thank you.

    The answer is, 'It depends'. On other system elements, room, auditory system, program material and so on. It's a discussion where abstracting via reductionism is not a suitable interpretive framework. Therefore, context is everything. Remember, this is all about the production of illusions. 'Better' means 'better illusion'. WTF that is, who knows! That is about subjective expectations. Personally, the harmonic content of NOS NIB tubes with low noise and microphonics is very pleasing. Tubes were only sidelined for profit for audio manufacturers. There's no intrinsic 'better'. Much like the analog 'vs' digital debate, there's a pointless search for 'unnecessary perfection' with solid state and digital that is much hyped via ads and marketing IMVHO. Most folks buy a hifi system and keep it years and years. So they are always trying to sell us the latest thing.

    two points i think is important: opposing drivers also needs to be linked to each other directly, not only with the box like in this svs. my other point is: the woofer crossover at 140hz is too low, maybe a limitation and compromise they worked around but still you will miss the impact from 150hz and above from only two midrange units. 200hz is better from this perspective. and speculations from my part is that the ports may have some issues with larger bandwidth woofers, same with internal damping wish is lacking in ported designs.

    I have one of the speaker greats, Infinity IRS, and have had many amps I just haven’t been happy with. European amps, American amps, famous designers, famous name brands. The Krells, Pass Labs and Mark Levinsons of the world. I have done a ton of upgrades from ladder dacs, to power isolation and conditioning tweaks to the point that there is not much more that I can do. I found an M-5000 deal, and I have to tell you, this thing beats out A-LOT of ultra high end amps. I’m talking stuff like Constellation Hercules etc. The sound stage blackness is very, very noticeable even when there is not much more to improve on a high end system. Very unusually quiet amp. I hate to sound like a typical audiophile broken record, but I rediscovered all my music again with this deep “black” background noise floor. Yes, other amps perform great, as does this amp, but it’s how quiet it is that really got me shocked. One of the reasons I looked into this amp was that I know about Yamaha being really good, but spectacularly underrated by the audiophile community, and secondly, the design philosophy. The pull-pull design is very unusual - and very special. Only 4 amps that I know use this. 2 of the 4 were designed by the late Bascom King, and the other 2 by Yamaha. There is an interview of Bascom where he talks about why pull-pull is superior to any other mosfet configuration. This is the reason the M-5000 is staggeringly more quiet than any other high end amp. The first amp to use this was the Yamaha B2, from which Bascom discovered Yamaha’s secret sauce. When I found out the M-5000 unarchived this very special design, I was curious to see what they could do with modern parts. I’m currently running BHK300 monoblocks for the top end to incorporate tube influence, and now the M-5000 uses the same design philosophy of pull-pull but is solid state all the way through for bottom end muscle. A combo made in heaven, and same design philosophy!! Could not be happier. Well done Yamaha!!

    • @Audionut74

      The foam is just an extra layer of vibration control, if you use the standard roadkill or any of the sound absorption products that are very similar in design from other companies will be just fine, The goal was to greatly reduce or to completely stop the ring of the metal enclosure.

    • @Audionut74
      @Audionut74 Před 9 hodinami

      @Velociraptor449 it's a inceiling speaker used for Atmos and or surrounds with maybe a 150 watts running to it. The wiring isn't touching the foam anyway it runs through the batting material in the center of the enclosure. In my 30yrs of having installed many hundreds of inceiling speakers I have never herd or seen a speaker wire (10-12-14-16 gauge) get hot enough to melt the jacket it's in or get hot enough to start a fire. You would have a much better chance to melting the solder connections on the voice coil if it was that extreme. At this power level it's just a non issue.

With music, using the heights often doesn't sound very good so I use the Auro-2D up-mixer which ignores the heights in favor of the core 5.1 system. The results can be very good to excellent with room filling sound without the heights make it too "busy".

    Learn from my costly experience: If you want clean sound in a large room at concert level volume you need 2 things: A separate amplifier and big towers. I bought a Monolith 7x200 all channels driven and it was a game changer. Receivers won't cut it for six pack long listening sessions at concert level especially if you are using surrounds. Plus a good amp will last decades and won't be obsolete like a processor or receiver in 10 years as Theo noted in the video. Regarding the speakers, any conventional speaker that can be shipped UPS may not be large enough to fill a large room. I tried that and it didn't work. Finally got some SVS Ultra Towers and they are more than enough speaker. If you want to build something like that in stages, make sure you get a receiver with pre-outs so you can add an amp later if you want.

    A friend of mine couldn't quite fit his new receiver into his cabinet. I went over there with a rasp and widened the slot. He said that, that was the best audio file he ever saw.

    I’ve had mine for 3 weeks and love them! BASX A3 would drive them hard with rock and metal but clipped when playing modern electronic music. I had to bi-amp them with my denon 4400. Just bought an Emotiva XPA 3 and am going home to hook it up. Have not turned on my 2 subs. These just sound too good!🎉

      They are definitely power hungry. Glad you’re enjoying them. Just in case you didn’t know you’re only supposed to bi amp with the same amp. I wouldn’t care if it sounded good, but just throwing it out there
