Correction - the first Apple TV remote was made of aluminium and glass, not plastic.
technically the original was all aluminium, then the aluminium and glass black one. and now the one we have is all aluminium again
@@PISCINAPARTYPAPI Technically the remote you’re referring to was never a “Siri” remote. It was simply called Apple Remote. There’s only been 3 generations of Siri Remote. The 1st Gen was like the remote in the video that had the white ring. The 1st Gen was updated to in order to *remove the ring, but it was still a 1st Gen. The 2nd Gen introduced the aluminium remote we are used to seeing now. The 3rd Gen is identical to the 2nd Gen, but the Lightning port was replaced with a USB-C port.
*add
@@JBaby_9783 that’s what I said just not like that
Yes, you are correct. There have been 4 gens of Apple TV remote. The first one in 2009 was all aluminum and had a replaceable non-rechargeable battery. The subsequent 3 generations in 2015, 2017 and 2021 were referenced as Siri remotes, and had BT as well as IR, with rechargeable batteries. There was an Apple Remote introduced in 2005 to support Front Row on iMacs and Mini that was all plastic, and could be used with early gens of Apple TV.@@PISCINAPARTYPAPI
@@Jeremy-3ds You’re right thanks! I hated the ring. I liked the concave button better.
For me the integration with the AirPods is the best feature of all. They link flawlessly and the spatial audio is very nice.
That feature alone makes the ATV justify the price tag
@@rogiersmit I too enjoy watching TV while I cruise around on my ATV.
Me and my wife will watch movies/tv sometimes with AirPods on so we don’t wake the sleeping baby. So nice how you can easily link two sets of AirPods
Yes, this is what prompted me to get Apple TV to start with. However for me it doesn't work flawlessly at all. Sometimes my pods auto connect, sometimes I get a message apple tv has detected them and sometimes apple tv ignores them and I have to connect via settings. In all cases I put in the pods before turning on my apple TV. If anyone knows how to ensure auto connect I would be very grateful.
This is one of the reasons why I’m considering getting one I think you can also use your ps5 through the Apple TV meaning able to use AirPods as your headset for gaming.
Nice little tip, but if you double tap the remote (no click) while the video progress bar is visible it will tell you what time it is and how late it will be when the video is complete.
Two additional tips:
1. With the current remote, clicking on the Right or Left arrows of the navigation ring will skip the content forward or backward. The amount it moves depends on the app. For instance, CZcamsTV skips 15 seconds with each click.
2. Changing the Keyboard Layout (Settings -> General -> Keyboard Layout) from Linear to Grid makes it MUCH easier to navigate the on-screen keyboard to enter text.
Omfg!! Did not know about number two!!
I have a question about 1. so I currently have an apple tv with the new remote and going forward/backwards on CZcams videos doesn’t work as easily as it used to be on the previous remote anymore.
Previously it was like you described but on the new one you always have to swipe up, then right/left and then hit OK instead of just clicking on the left/right side.
Is there a setting you know of that fixes this?
@@MikeyBarca02 I have noticed the same thing. I have the original Siri remote. Prior to multiple updates skip back/skip forward would work easily every time but now sometimes all it does is just pause the video. On other apps, I have to ask siri to go back “what did she/he say?” But the feature does not work on youtube.
Thanks for the grid hint. I‘m usually grab my iPhone‘s remote which allows to type text more conveniently, but sometimes it‘s not at hand, and the grid keyboard is more convenient in this case, instead go and getting the iPhome 😊
@@jimmyboy1582 oh wow they even removed it on the prior remote too now? At least it was working there, but now it works nowhere.. I just hope CZcams on Apple TV gets an upgrade that makes use of apples remote
This was excellent, Apple should pay you a ton of money to have this video installed on every box and made available from a new Getting Started tile which they should definitely add.
Lmao 🤣 apple 🍎 will release a new Apple TV and blow this one away…..
I couldn’t agree more.
Yeah, definitely this helped me a lot!
Its just a streaming box ,theyre pretty straight forward .
@@skyarsenallll no one said they weren't straight forward…
One of the best videos I’ve ever seen on the Apple TV. Tons of information, presented in a very concise, down to earth manner. Awesome!
One feature you missed which is a must have for me is the Match Content option in the video settings. If that is on and your TV is compatible it streams video at the frame rate and resolution of the content, otherwise the Apple TV converts it to whatever your Apple TV is set to.
If you have a mix of content, for example movies at 24 frames a second, UK and North American TV shows which have different frame rates everything streams without annoying jitters, which can be really obvious on panning shots for example.
Many of the apps honour the setting too, so Netflix and Plex will match. The main exception is the CZcams app that resolutely converts everything to the overarching setting of the Apple TV.
Old Siri Remote is not made if plastic, it's actually glass, i know because my 3yr old smashed 4 of them
Excellent and informative introduction to the Apple TV 4K. A couple of things that I particularly like about this steaming box that you didn’t mention is the scrolling feature to quickly and accurately fast forward or reverse on many of the apps.
I also think the ability to switch quickly and easily between various different apps is another big benefit of the ATV4K box and provides much greater flexibility than using the built in apps on a smart tv or an Amazon fire stick for example where you have to completely exit one app before accessing another.
Very cool video. One thing that I love about the Apple TV that I suggest you to add, is the screen saver with those amazing videos!!
A vital setting to turn on is 'match content' in the video and audio settings, turn that on for frame rate and HDR. It then instructs the TV to alter frame rate and turn on/off HDR based on the content you are watching for smooth playback.
This feature makes my TV go back for two seconds before video plays. At least on CZcams. However, with it off hard to see, there is a lag.
@@jimmyboy1582 that is your tv changing its settings to match the frame rate of the content being played. You may miss a couple seconds at the start but you will have smooth playback with no tearing/judder etc and it will be playing at the frame rate the director/creator desired.
@@bragg2012 I know it took me a while to research it I wish it was instantaneous.
The latest Apple TV 4K doesn’t do this anymore 👍🏻
You didnt cover the 'top shelf' functionality. Really useful for streamlining AppleTV usage. If an app is in the 'dock' i.e. the top row, it MAY have additional 'top shelf' functionality. Netflix does, the AppleTV app does, etc etc. You can just hover over an app on the dock then above it will show pertinent details such as the TV app showing your up next list without having to go into the TV app itself....
Very useful to know and understand.
One function you missed. The Apple tV can be used as an additional display from a Mac. It an also be used to mirror displays from your iPhone or iPad.
Yes, great tip!!!!
Yes dear ❣️❣️
ONE menu item I use ALL the time in YT. When I'm scrolling and found a video to watch - you long press the track pad button before you open the video - a menu pops up & you can "Save to Watch Later" & a few other things - Very Very Handy.
Love the FaceTime option. We’ve always used screen mirroring to FaceTime with family. This should be much easier.
Everyone I talk to at my same age, younger, or older, it doesn’t matter. No one seems to understand how amazing the Apple TV is.
Thanks for the great video - as always your stuff is really informative -- even for a long time Apple-user like myself!
One feature I LOVE is the ability to say out-loud "Hey Siri, turn off my TV" just before I fall asleep. Finding the remote always pulls me out of that blissful pre-slumber mode.
(I have a HomePod nearby, but as long as all your devices are on the same wi-fi network, your iPhone or even Apple Watch will listen and "speak" to the AppleTV)..
A feature I haven't seen which would be great is being able to use the Find My app to locate a missing remote. Often the remotes (especially the older smaller ones) end up hidden behind a pillow or under the sheets or someplace that takes a while to find. A little chirp or beep after speaking "Hey Siri, find my remote" would be awesome and very "Apple" centric.
Great video! Very comprehensive and easy for beginners. I was probably underutilizing the Siri function before, will use that more.
One suggestion to include, as some mentioned below, is settings in the “Video and Audio” section around SDR and HDR. These are important to understand and set properly to get a good experience, Apple actually makes things pretty easy in this area.
Main issue is that most streaming content is a mishmash of SDR, HDR and Dolby Vision. Also most menus for streaming services are SDR. So forcing the video to Dolby 4K or HDR 4K on Apple TV always will cause SDR content and menus to look terrible and blown out in a lot of cases. General advice in most cases is to set the output on Apple TV to “4K SDR” and then turn on the “Match frame rate” and “match dynamic range” settings to on. This will allow SDR content, such as menus, to be displayed as intended and then auto switch to HDR or Dolby when these frames are detected.
With the gen 2 Siri Remote, you can also use the outer touch ring to scroll quickly backwards and forwards like on an old iPod. Some apps don’t yet support, but Netflix for example does, and it’s great!
Anything using Apple’s OSD controls (as they all should) use this feature and I love it. Just keep your finger over the outer touch ring until the onscreen marker changes and you can roll trough the timeline. Thank for mentioning this @carps194
Excellent video as always. One quick question. If I watch a program on AppleTV and pause the show. If I come back a day or two later, there doesn't seem to be an option to resume the show, it always goes back to the beginning? How do I resume the program? Thanks
I literally learn subverting be with every one of your videos. Sometimes it’s small, sometimes it’s major, never fails though. Thank you
That was really helpful. I have one issue that a declining % of users would have. My 4K TV does not have eArc. This means it does not pass Dolby ATMOS through to my Sonos ARC system. If the Apple TV had 2 HDMI outputs, that would have been fine. To try to address this I bought an Arcane HD Fury splitter that sends video to TV and audio to the Sonos ARC. Any thoughts?
There is always something I learn from each of your videos. Showed the bit about asking Siri 'what did he say' to mean it skips back 10s and briefly shows subtitles to my other half. Her instant reply was "Game Changer" :)
👌🏻
Awesome feature
I agree with Andrew, this should be the introduction video installed on apple tv, I have had mine for over a year, and now I don't have to cuss at the remote select button anymore! thank you!
Excellent video - great audio and video quality, clear, complete, concise and VERY helpful. This is a prime example of what a tech channel should be!
Great content. I will definitely get more use out of mine after watching this. The only issue I have is the streaming apps for live tv. I use an android box simply because it runs the TiviMate app which is excellent. Still looking for one on AppleTV.
I believe you missed the other difference between the two latest TV 4K boxes. The larger capacity has Thread capability to become the centre of your smart home as a leading device, which is also the function of the HomePod mini for example. 🙂
🙂18:10 in the spec details
2 notes:
1. Using the iPhone as a controller lets you use the iPhone keyboard rather than the hunt-and-peck style for typing. This is useful for things like passwords. Of course, using the iPhone also gives you access to whatever password management software you use.
2. Making the Apple Photos app the first app on the Top Shelf gives you an initial screen that is an 'Up Next' style scroll of photo memories. I find this more pleasing than the choices available from the Apple TV app.
Unless you have teeny tiny fingers, you will always hunt and peck on a phone screen - NOBODY I'm aware of can touch type on a screen that small...
Mine used to do that but drops the keyboard on me these days.
Thanks for the warning about the photos app.
True, but using Siri to dictate passwords is easier still. As long as you don’t have anyone around listening in that is>
@Alexo-lq5kp Not when it's a random password created using a password manager
Very interesting and helpful information. I find using the CZcams App on my AppleTV very fiddly and would appreciate any tips and guidance for that - including any settings that avoid the frame bleeding outside the visible area, which is really frustrating whrn watching software instructionals. Always enjoy your content, even when the subject isn't for something I actually use.
How is it fiddly?
Does the continuity feature allow you to stream audio through Airplay or does the audio come through the phone only?
I think in playback you totally skipped the scrubbing feature. One of my favorites. When you are paused (in supported apps) you can hold your finger on the outer ring of the remote and without lifting your finger rotate around the ring to scrub forward or backward as fast or as slow as you like.
This is truly helpful and an evolution in remote controls.
Wow !! I have had several generations of apple tv units…. But had no idea how sophisticated it had become and how integrated with Siri ( which I currently rarely use) As ever your presentation is impeccable and so informative…many thanks!
thanks so much for this. despite having an Apple TV for years I learned a lot of new things about it!
Just purchased a Hisense U8K and am looking for the streaming device to go along with it. I don't do any gaming and don't have a home theater sound system. I'm down to the Apple TV and NVIDIA Shield. Thank you for the informative and well done video.
Thanks for talking through all these features, still some I wasn‘t aware of yet. Just wanted to mention the sync option (or so) which would power on or off connected devices (receiver, TV) when starting or shutting down your Apple TV.
Another feature I like: When you have selected the search bar and jump into the line or grid keyboard, grab your iPhone and a notification to open the remote app will appear right on your Lock Screen. Tap to open the app’s search bar and type the search term with the iPhone keyboard.
"What did he say?" is a REALLY good tip. Thank you!
Is continuity camera the only option for FaceTime on the Apple TV?
Or is it possible to connect a dedicated camera to it?
Lots of info! Will definitely watch again (And again) to get all the goodies. Thank you!
Most might think that Accessibility holds nothing for them, but the shortcut (three clicks of the menu/back button) can be set for really commonly used functions like zoom, or toggle Closed Captions/subtitles. Not all apps support this method to toggle CCs -- I can't fathom why -- but it's a handy thing to do without click-hold the Siri button and speak out loud.
Love your work fella. One thing I’d hoped to see you cover (and potentially learn some new tips about) is using the computer icon for connecting to Apple TV libraries on other macs on the local network. I’m sure there are plenty of people who use this feature :)
Me too! I can’t get it connected to an external drive on a computer on the same network to easily play video content (that I have created for example in Final Cut Pro and exported to disk on my iMac. Why isn’t this easy? Furthermore, it isn’t easy to mirror what is on my iMac screen onto my 4K TV via the Apple TV. Would love to learn how to do both!! Love your content!
Oh yeah that’d be interesting!
The more expensive model support thread as well. Thread is a smartphone network protocol connecting your smart home devices and is a very good feature to have if you build an Apple smart home. Also the Apple TV can act as a home hub enabling you to control all HomeKit devices when away from home
Yep. Don't forget Thread networking!
I was very surprised he didn’t mention Thread, it’s definitely a good future proof investment
You can also turn off the touch option for the remote in the settings if it’s hard to use or annoying. This gives you a 4-button remote if you prefer to click through your content.
I have an Apple TV 4K first generation one thing that is important to point out, especially for HomeKit users. It is the only newer model 4K with ethernet compatibility that has thread compatibility what is extremely useful when meshing your network it’s also extra useful for using it as a secondary computer terminal as you can remote desk computer via third-party applications. Great video been watching your content for a week keep it up.😊
Hi This was a really helpful video and insight to Apple TV. One thing I remain puzzled about is how it enables switching between App services and watching live TV. I thought I’d seen somewhere that Apple TV now incorporates a live TV programme guide - is this right? K
I like the Apple-TV ecosystem. Many benefits to mention but the best one is I only have to install apps on one device and it installs on all my other ones.
Curious to know why we shouldn’t always close down our apps? I’ve been doing this probably every night, if not once a week. Thanks in advance!
I have one of these and it’s sooooo much better than any other streaming box.
thank you for the video, you have persuaded me into binning the amazon stick and getting the apple tv box
Excellent video! I just got my first Apple TV yesterday and this video was very helpful. Thank you for speaking in a normal, and calm manner. Too many channels deliver content in an exaggerated, and fake “excited” manner. New subscriber!
Totally agree. CZcams is a mess, and I appreciate the lack of hyperbole here.
Did you experience any flickering in some apps . I had this device and mine would flicker on HBO max when I would watch it I tried everything to fix it . Have you ever had any issues or maybe it was just a bad unit
Im looking to buy one. just one question: I dont have apple fitness, but it is possible to start a workout with apple watch and then see the stats on tv? (I have stationary bike)
I have had Apple TV for some time but honestly have not used it. I'm now intrigued to use it. Do you know, if I sign up for Apple One which includes Apple Music, will it automatically cancel my other subscription or do I need to manually cancel my stand alone Apple Music subscription?
Another great video! Have had AppleTV for ages but was a few items here that I didn't know about.
I really want to get one but can I use apps like cinema or Stremio with these? I don’t know too much about Apple TV I use fire sticks and nvidia shield right now.
Consider i have a cheap tv compared to big brands like sony or samsung but it supports dolby vision and hdr10. When i am trying to stream through tv's inbuild app, colour tuning and quality is not good. Will it improve the colour tuning if i have apple tv attached to it.
I originally bought the Apple TV 4K box and a pair of the large HomePods to replace the TV speakers and replace the cumbersome audio amp and speakers setup. This also improved the audio quality significantly. This also cleaned up much of the cabling mess I had below my big screen TV.
do you have any experience to share regarding using the remote to control a Mac Mini.
Your TV looks amazing bro!!
If I have two echo dots, can I have sound play through the echo AND Tv speakers at the same time?
Hi. You didn’t mention Apple TV‘a role as a HomeKit hub, and how useful it is as a remote for lights, for instance. Also, you didn’t mention the AirPlay potential as a wireless screen to play iPhone/iPad content.
Your vids are my absolute go to when trying to figure out or mastering my Apple products. Thank you SO much for the work you do!
Thank you for an easy to understand and informative discussion of the new Apple TV! We do have one question. The microphone app search (for example in the CZcams app) now starts a SIRI search and an orange dot appears in the top right corner of the TV. The microphone app search worked with all my apps from the beginning. We have ios17.2. We have tried some of the options but have not been able to stop the global SIRI action. We welcome if possible a simple option solution to return to the app microphone search. You have a great channel! Thank you
Do you know if AppleTV just recently changed the way they allow playing of offline videos? I have new content in the same folder where all of my other videos, already on my iPad are, but, they will not sync to the iPad. In fact, I cannot even see them under the movies tab, in order to be able to select them to sync.
Nany thanks; great content, professionally presented. I do have a question you (or the audience) might be able to help me with. I have an Apple TV 4K (and many other Apple geegaws) connected to a Mac mini running the Apple TV App with almost a thousand movies and TV programmes on disc. Most have been ripped from DVDs, with a few direct purchases from the Apple Store. But when I use the Siri remote to search for a film that I know I have on file, it only ever gives me online results (commonly to rent or buy). Is there some way to force Apple TV/Siri to search for results in my local library first..?
I am confused using Ventura on my Mac. Before Ventura I could stream all my home holiday videos onto my smart tv using the ATV. Now I cannot do that, so is streaming now only for purchased films from Apple?
Excellent video. Well thought out and very comprehensive. Thanks very much.
Nice video! Can it connect to a ring doorbell and show live footage?
Thank you !! I own at least 4 Apple TVs and I learned a lot !!
Please show the iplayer UI. They don’t seem to be updating it anymore. The fireTv has all the categories on the left instead of at the top. My older Apple TV has them at the top. Would it be worth switching back to Apple TV?
As always GREAT video. I learned a lot from this video and I’ve had an tv for years!
For me Apple Fitness+ and Apple HomeKit integration are the main selling points.
The best AppleTV tips videos I’ve seen ❤
The interface of the default video player of the Apple TV is great and so funcional! Sadly many streaming services doesn't use it and prefer to implement its own crap controls.
This is brilliant, cheers! I've had my Apple TV for 2 years now but had no idea about all these remote functions. Truth be told, I wasn't using my Apple TV+ submscription enough simply because I found the interface hard to navigate. So I really appreciate your tutorial!
Great video! What monitor is that in the background?
I am interesting in casting (not mirroring) video smoothly with audio from my MACBOOK to a TV that the Apple TV box is attached to. Is the Apple TV able to do this rather important function processing all the various video file codecs thrown at it, such as MKV, MP4 etc? I had been using Beamer and Chromecast but that option doesn't seem available anymore without a subscription.
Hi, I always wondered if the Apple TV supports Stremio App. As I don't have it and don't know how to search that I would appreciate very much the response. This is the only reason why I still use Android TV box. Thanks
I’ve used Apple devices since 1984, but I’ve always been happy with my Roku. It interfaces with my iPhone, iPad, and MacBook Air. Does the job just fine and is much less expensive. Thanks.
Thank you for this. I now have the Apple TV a few month and I am happy with it. The only enjoying thing is that once the screensaver starts, with beautiful pictures, an ‘AirPlay’ pop-up (similar to what you show at the conference room configuration) comes on the screen showing the internet name and the name of the Apple TV. I live in The Netherlands and searched the internet but I cannot find anything how to remove this pop-up. And it really a shame because it blocks a part of the pictures and also disappears and show back again on an other place on the screen.
Do you have a solution? Thank you for your help,
My only tip is in remotes you can make it use any remote you have to had by using the learn function 👍👍
Great app in the UK 'TV Launcher' that combines all of the live tv/on-demand apps in one place so you can get a tv guide, now & next etc and then launches the relevant app right into the content for you.
Great video. Can you make a video explaining how the built-in VPN will work in TVOS17?
We just got a appletv 4K second hand …it took us a while to get it connected and get rid of the old users ! But I hopefully see it as a way to get rid of unnecessary costs that we are still paying for cable right now
Thank you for taking the time to share all your knowledge 👏
Hi! Thank you for this walkthrough video! I have one question though: How can I synchronise my "home videos" to my Apple TV and then play them on my TV? I can synchronise them to my iPhone's TV app, but despite I specifically select to synchronise "Playlists" (as opposed to "Videos") they don't appear on the phone app. It only shows the videos, but NOT organised within playlists... I appreciate any constructive inputs, thank you! 🙏
This video is an absolute must!! Its honestly turned my apple tv into a central hub for my entertainment
Thank you for this video! So much I didn't have a clue about.
I have a lot of content saved on my computer that I’d like to watch on Apple TV as I was able to do with my 1st generation model. When updating the OS on my computer I noticed iTunes no longer exists, hence iTunes sharing is gone too. How to play the content in light of these upgrades/ changes please?
Is it possible to install VLC player on Apple TV and then access content from a local NAS box ? Thanks.
What are your thoughts comparing the ATV to the chrome cast or FireStick? I just subscribed to CZcams tv thanks
How did you get to settings. I can’t find one video visually showing what was pressed to get there it just cuts and we’re there. Exactly what buttons were pressed to get to the general settings?
I did what you said before I watched this video.... but I couldn't get the remote to work. Then, following your advice, I waited several minutes for it to reboot.... and that made all the difference. Now it works.... the firmware did not update since it was already the latest available.
I was wondering if there are apps that provide access to local TV channels with the Apple TV plus subscription.
If Apple would add a live guide, it’d be the best streaming platform out there!
@@kelticd5397 yes, similar to YTTV. Offer channels and a dvr option, I’d cancel YTTV in a second.
Can I access my Apple Files app to watch and view audio and video files stored in this app. If not, how can I view my own video files other than streaming through my iPhone or iPad?
Are there any accessories available now that allows me to FaceTime without having to prop my phone up near the TV?
The only problem I have is that using HomePods as the audio system volume from some apps is very low requiring turning volume to max. Same apps from Google TV are louder at 60% than ATV at 100%
Hi ! Can you switch between two different APPLE IDs in the same Apple TV device ?
Great video! Very informative. Does Sky Go (UK🇬🇧) work on the Apple TV Unit?
Great video. Perfectly informative. Thank you.
Thank you for this video.
I have a movie collection 1000+.
Is there any way to create movie playlists? e.g., all Batman movies, all Start Trek movies, Christmas movies, etc.
