    why was this video more about the actual photos app ,camera and how save space on your phone than icloud photos and how it works,, thought he was gonna talk about how to access them after you back them on icloud but he didn't lol

      Once they’re backed up to iCloud, they’re accessible on all your devices by turning on “iCloud photos” toggle in settings on the respective device. You can also see your entire library at iCloud.com

      I think he’s just accurately representing how iCloud photos work. However, I agree with you on this issue, it’s an issue on the side of iCloud though. I don’t want every single file to automatically backup and be expressed on every single device, I want it accessible from a separate app in which I specifically control every aspect of management, not automatically. I think Amazon photos does a much better job if you’re wanting any kind of command over what it’s doing.

      @@hannanathan564 I agree that Amazon Photos provides more control, but they also charge extra for video backup past a minimal size. So I like Amazon’s feature of purely backing up photos. I know that all my photos, good or bad, are safely backed up to Amazon. But iCloud Photos does backup all my videos. So since I have the space with my Apple One subscription, I plan to use both iCloud and Amazon Prime Photos since iCloud Photos will delete a photo from everywhere if I delete it from my Phone and Amazon Photos won’t do that.

    What I hate about iPhones are when I create new photo folders, and move the photos to that folder, but it's actually more like a shortcut. the photos will always remain in the main library.

    What’s the difference between optimized iPhone storage vs download and keep originals??

  • @SROBSTAD
    @SROBSTAD Pƙed 11 měsĂci +2

    Hi! Hope someone can help with my question.
    Will the photos on my iphone library viewer be in a noticeable worser resultion, If i have chosen to optimize my iphone storage by using the icloud photos feature?
    I mean that the icloud photos feature promises to keep my original photos in the original resultion and great quality in icloud photos, and it certainly clears up some space on my iphone storage. And thats what makes me wondering, if the pictures im then seeing on my phone now (with icloud photos storage enabled) - are these then in a worser reultion and quality, than if i just downloaded the originals to my iphone storage?
    Now it is enabled and evertime i scroll trough my photos it seems like it is loading for a little secund, (sort of) and its looks like the photo i a little blurry at the start, but after that little secund it seems like its in a really great resolution. So does that little loading time actually download the full resultion picture from my icloud storage, just when im looking at it? And forgets it again as i close the photo album?
    I just want to be able to watch my photos in full quality 😅
    Hope you can answer my question.

    Michael, thank you for a brilliant and clear video on iCloud. Wondering if I can ask for you advice. I have 1TB of photos and videos on Onedrive. I own a MacBook (128gb storage) and an iPhone which is similar. Ideally I'd like to download my media from OneDrive to my MacBook in chunks and then move them to iCloud for easier access on my devices. However when I tried this I found that when I had uploaded the photos to iCloud and then deleted them from my MacBook to free space to download another chunk, iCloud also deleted what I had just uploaded. Am I missing a trick?!

    • @Michael_Billig
      @Michael_Billig  Pƙed 2 lety

      Thanks for your comment Paul. I would try downloading the OneDrive application for Mac, and using the chunks method, drag your media out to your desktop, then bring them into the photos app from there. Another method would be just buying a cheap hard drive for the photo transfer, and either keep the hard drive for other uses, or you could probably just return it when you’re done with it

      Every time you take a photo, it will automatically go to your photos app. The photos the camera app is your camera roll, which is just your recent photos you took on said device. If you remove a photo or video from either the photos app or camera roll, it will be deleted from the device all together. Your camera roll just takes photos from your photos app, it isn’t two separate storages that both take up space.

    I backed up my iPhone 6s last night to prepare to transfer to iPhone 13
    My photos are my prized possession when it comes to my phone, I have about 95GB (so my phone DID say)
    When I went to the iCloud backup screen and went to photos to turn them on, I *turned off* the option to ‘upload to photo stream’
    My photos storage has now went down to 52GB
    And all of a sudden, the 128GB I was using, has now drastically decreased to 70?!
    Therefore I just wanted confirmation of turning off ‘upload to photo stream’ won’t affect any photo being missed out of the backup, considering the amount my storage dropped 😳

Is it possible to tell the iCloud/iPhone memory that everything older than x months/years will be deleted on the iPhone, but will remain in the iCloud? Up to now, I would have understood iCloud to mean that the photos are synchronised and that this is not an archive. If photos are deleted on the iPhone, they are also deleted in the iCloud. I haven't found a solution for this yet (even though I'm still far away from it, I'd be interested to know how to deal with it). Thanks 🙂

      This is perfectly possible. Via the File app. For example photos from a holiday, that you want saved in icloud ĂĄnd delete from your iphone.
      Go to the Photo app and select the photos of the holiday. Click on the share button and scroll down till you find ‘save in Files’. Now choose the location. On your device or in icloud drive. Also it’s possible to create a folder by clicking on the folder+ icon.
      When done, in the Photo app you can delete the photos you selected for the holiday (also in the bin of the Photo App)
      In the File app, on your left you see locations. That’s the place where to find the photos.
      On this way you can save space on your iphone.
      Hopefully this is helpful for you.

    Hi Michael thank you for the explanation!! But I want to ask something. So, I just buy icloud storage for 50gb. Beforehand, I don’t backup my photos on icloud. So, I just back up all my photos to icloud storage (about 20gb). I think after I backup it to icloud, the memory on iphone storage (photos) will automatically decrease (after I turn on the Icloud photo library). But, the reality is my iphone storage still full and the size of my photos on my iphone storage still 20gb. Or the synchronization is not done yet? What should I do? Thank you😊

    Optimize iCloud Storage will only replace original photos and videos if your phone is low on storage.

    I got the 200 gb plan and when syncing my photos and automatically backing up my phone it used up 100gb which is a scam cause it’s not done syncing it’s just gonna use all of the storage when I bought my phone comes with 175gb so it’s only gonna leave me with a few gb how do I fix that

    Non iphone user here. What happens if you have a full iphone local storage, then buy an icloud plan upload your photos to the cloud. How do you delete the local storage and distinguish local and icloud so that you do not permanently delete any of your photos? I would of loved to hear this explanation.

      Not necessarily. The big thing is that you mĂșst use the File app. Move all your photos, via the share button and the save in Files option, to the File app. One big advantage of the File app is that you can make folders. When the photos are moved to the File app, you can delete the photos in the Photo app. Before i forget. In the File app you can choose if you want save the photos on your device or on icloud drive.

I looked up on internet and saw some info like "Turn off 'iCloud Photos' and choose 'Remove from iPhone'. But there is catch up, if you turn on 'iCloud Photos' again and your phone is empty, if you delete all data from icloud.". This is really scary for me. Can you guide me on this?

      It has nothing, really nothing!, to do with hate.
      Let’s be honest when talking about organize photos. Many people want organize photos in folders or in albums.
      And when move a photo to another folder or album, then it has to be really moving. That is what many people expected.
      But the situation is different. The photos stay always in the camera roll/photo library. Definitely not everyone (including me) likes that.

    • @paperplates1867
      @paperplates1867 Pƙed 2 měsĂci

      @@Kluivertnr1 Eh you're wrong. You can organize photos in folders and albums. It is moving. It's not duplicating a photo if you put it in an album. It's not taking up more storage space by doing so. It is the same as all other photo apps. What do you mean the photos stay always in the camera roll/photo library? That's the point... The Library shows you all your photos and videos in chronological order. While albums and folders you create can sort the images. It doesn't duplicate the image, acting like you have two of them.
      The same photo can be added to multiple albums without increasing the amount of storage used on your device. This is because albums in Apple Photos are essentially virtual collections or pointers to the photos in your library, not separate files.

      Yes you don’t manually upload anything to the cloud. It does it automatically as a back up. It’s not additional storage for your phone. However as you can see in those settings, you can set it to where your phone will only keep the lower quality version on the device if you’re getting close to running out of storage.
      This is my understanding anyway.

    Icloud Photos is a nightmare on devices with only 32GB of space like my iPhone 7+
    With icloud photos i can have 50-200GB of photos in the cloud but the drawback is no matter of i have 5GB of photos or 200GB of photos there they will occupy 5GB of space on the phone physically to hold previews etc, and it increases the "other data" even more so the last two years i have had 7.38GB of IOS size, 14-15GB of other data, 5-6GB of space taken by photos app, so i only have 28/32GB used before any apps and i have almost all apps offloaded that i have to download when i use them and basically have 1-2GB free and the photos space and other data fluctuates pretty randomly so almost every day i end up with storage full messages and the high resolution photos don't even load or work in apps unless there's 1.6gb of free space.
    So i got stopped using icloud photos because it's only a total nightmare on a 32gb device. It's so bad there should be a warning to not use it with 32gb.

    I wonder what the difference between 'cellular data' and 'unlimited uploads' is? The former still sounds like it's going to eat through data - what uploads does it not do?
