I've had a wheel come off once before too, thankfully I pulled over before it completely came off, it was hanging on by one stud. It's a pretty scary situation.

Tyre went off into the bush due to the slope of the road shoulder,they travel a lot further than you would think,i highly doubt sabotage, more likely poor maintenance or vibration, vibration can do lots of weird damage

With the way the wheel was wobbling, It is HIGHLY possible that the vibrations of the axle have caused the wheel nuts to spin off.

Probably why people arnt stopping is because your vehicle is there too looks like your helping , and yes you are , don't need heaps off vehicles parked there too bloody dangerous
