  • My mother loved to boil neck bones. They have more meat on the bones than you would think. She would make
dumplings or just serve them with vegetables. In the South we use all of the hog. We don't throw good meat away. Did y'all kill hogs in hog killing weather. An old saying is - " Boy,it's hog kill'in weather outside. "

Hello Brenda! I grew up on neck bones and still eating them. I'm 70 years old and still love them. My mother had 8 of us kids and she had to make food stretch. She would cook a big pot of saurkraut and neckbones, or a big pot of beans and neckbones, she would even fix her own bar b que sauce and would back the neckbones in the oven covered until they were tender and then she'd pour her BBQ sauce over them and back them a little longer and let me tell you they were soooo good!!! Why they'd make a tadpole whip a whale. But you know we felt so rich cause we we had some delicious food like that. Thank you for cooking like you do cause that's how we ate and my momma has been in Heaven with Jesus now for 22 years and boy do I miss her. You remind so much of her. To us she was our Queen, she was a regal, royal lady. If you could just send me one word of even a smiley face to let me know you got this I would sure appreciate it. I have sent you messages before asking a question and never got a response. I understand that you can't always do that but at least I would know if you were getting them or not and know whether I should just stop trying. If someone can tell me why my messages are not going through or what I may be doing something wrong I would appreciate it very much. Love you Miss Brenda! God Bless you in a mighty way.😊

I really like those pig skins and on the packages calling them Chicarone.
When I was growing up my sister and I had the horny awful job of cleaning the chitlins… 🥺😳They are the intestines of the hog. Like you say in the South we didn’t waste anything on the hog. We ate the liver, the heart, the brains and the stomach what is called tripe and you fried it. The chitterlings were boiled and could be sometimes pickled.
I was born and raised in Madison County in north central Florida. Those were wonderful days. I’m older now I’m at 83 years old next Sunday and it’s too hot outside for me to do anything because I can’t breathe in this hot weather! Brenda I love watching your videos. And I am and all and admire your ability to keep on doing everything that you do. Love you much.❤

My daddy loved pickled pigs feet. Mother always had jar in the refrigerator. The hoecake looks so good. Had never heard about them before. Southern food his wonderful! Some people don't know what they are missing. Southern food is mostly "plain Jane" but delicious and doesn't have 16 ingredients. Thank you for your video. God blessings!

Good morning Miss Brenda you bring back so many memories for me. My parents Portuguese are from Azore Islands. they brought the tradition of butchering pigs and cows all animals actually here to United States so living in the city we had pigs and cows hanging from the garage rafter we were the talk of the neighborhood. I’m from California. You don’t see too many people doing that specially in the city, my parents ate everything off of the hog from the snout to the feet. My mom made blood sausage and pig sausage. I miss those days. My father passed away at 55 with cancer so no more pig slaughtering or any other animals for that matter.

Ms Brenda, you sure are making me hungry? I haven’t had neckbones in a while. my mother would cook a big pot of neckbones and a pot of beans and some rice and cornbread or a big plate of hoecake bread and have a little saucer plate with sliced onions and a couple of hot peppers with big glass of ice tea. She was one hell of a cook rest her soul. I miss her cooking, she could cook the meal in a New York minute. Most others would be standing over the stove for quite a long while. Miss her just about every day I think about her.❤❤❤

Not everyone understands how folks can be rich in love but economically in hardship. I do. Even when things get better ,those that have known struggle realize hardship can happen for many reasons, quickly. Being frugal about your foods, using what you have, recycling, saving, it makes good sense and can mean the difference in having and not. Nothing wrong at all in knowing how to survive hard times. It's really nothing new, and there's just too many that want to live rich and flaunt it. They think digging in the dirt,or killing and cleaning an animal is beneath them. They claim it's cruel,or nasty. What are they going to do when their vegetables run out? Starve? Some are finding out. My parents and grandparents lived through the great depression, one set of grandparents didn't. That couple left the mountains and sought city jobs, they got away from the areas where they could grow anything...into a cruel place where they had to depend on goods provided by others. Where corruption was right around the corner. Where if you didn't have money, you didn't live. It certainly brings to mind how leaving paradise and entering into Sodom and Gomorrah would have been like. There were many reasons those cities were bad. You are right Brenda, besides showing people how to cook...you have a message. I hope they listen.
