    Internet and criticism, the two go hand in hand. People on twitch and other social platforms constantly argue over what is better, which sometimes turns into digs at people. In the league of legends analytic community, there has been some controversy over whether league of legends players should build morellonomicon or Liandry's torment.
    In this video, LS and Dr. K talk about how to deal with situations out of your control, like internet criticism and controversy.

    56:10 That resonated very well with me.
    Interestingly, for the longest time I thought focusing all my efforts on my intellect would be the right thing to do. And since I was told since I was a kid that I am a smart guy, I thought that thats what was expected of me to do. So I became a problem solver. I think I got good at it. And I guess that is when connections also started to go into the opposite way. If I see that I am not good at something, I would not be a good problem solver, I wouldnt do what was expected of me and I might not be a smart guy afterall. So my whole identity falls apart, I feel terrible and I shun away from that feeling, drowing myself in more problems I hopefully will solve to feel better again.
    But now I see problems everywhere, because I am so used to spotting problems and feeling the urge to fix them. It makes me feel active, accomplished, fullfilled and worth something.
    But recently, I started to realize that I pushed my own needs aside and bad sideeffects started to show. I lost the connection to what my body and mind want and need to operate. The whole time focusing on problems lead me to a path of being always stressed out and unfullifed. Accomplishments never last long, never happy for long, new problems need to find their solutions, always the ideal must be found and made a reality, having to give 110% at all times to do that, feeling useless when the realization and disappointment sinks in that such impossible ideals cant be turned into reality by myself. Going to bed feels like I am wasting useful time that could be spend doing and fixing something, waking up in the morning gives a few seconds of bliss and inner peace followed by a wave of stress and adrenalin when my intellect wakes up and reminds me that I have many more problems to fix and if I dont I am a pathetic failure. Nowadays, realizing that I am under such enormous, never ending stress, stresses me even more.
    And I guess that when I realized that I might be on the wrong path afterall, that I focused my whole being on one thing. So I looked around for solutions (what I can do best) and found this channel. I have been watching a few videos, tried out some meditation techniques and I think this reflective "What is" seems what I have been trying to come up on my own, but I never took the time to sit down for a few minutes and just listen to what my body wants to do. It is a relieve, knowing that giving up control is okay. Not having to worry about missing a crutial information that makes a line of thought incomplete and not an ideal solution to a problem that has no ideal solution anyways. So I - like many others here - want to quickly thank you for what you are doing here, Dr. K. And I would love to see LS on again to see what more might come out of these sessions.

      How has the last year been with you? Have you got new cool revelations and stuff?

    • @SETHthegodofchaos
      @SETHthegodofchaos Před 2 lety +2

      @@konstaConstant Oh, Hey Konsta. Glad you are interested. Hm, if I would have to sum it up: Rough, but rewarding. I think. And, oh boy, a lot of stuff happened.
      One of the big parts for me is the first hand experience of the disillusion that the "Self" is the Intellect. It is one thing to understand it in theory, but is another when actually experiencing it. Actually understanding it. Me rereading my first comment above makes me feel like a hustler in highsight. But maybe I am too harsh to myself again. It might just have been the first step toward where I am now. Thats a healthier perspective on it.
      Well, how did all of this happen? Well a lot of things came together at once. I didnt care about my physical healthy, enough sleep and in general my own misperception of my limitations (stuck too much in my own fantasies/theories, thinking I should be able to do everything if I do it, yet realizing that I dont get my ass up and actually start doing it, worrying too much about stuff in the past, present and future instead of just acting in the Now) as well as being not very understanding/compassionate/empathetic toward myself. I still push(ed) and forced myself too much when I didnt had to. Perfectionistic I guess. I noticed that I lack a lot of direct communication skills as well as being "too nice" because I dont want to tip on someone else toes/feelings (and therefore being rather social distant to people, maybe even socially anxious). In general, a lot of selfworth issues. And therefore, at one time, all of it came together at once. Everything seemed to break away. No options, no actions and ideal outcomes available. Nothing to rely on anymore. Everything felt uncertain and impossible. Which ended up making me have a panic attack (which I never had before). Which was and still is scary to me. And that was the time that I felt that my intellect (or Ego) had betrayed me. Afterwards, I guess it helped me to stop wanting to make sense of everything.
      Therefore, the biggest revelation, I think, is, that I dont have to make sense of everything or anything anymore. That I dont have to reason and explain myself to others all the time. Not having to be right all the time or know everything. Now, in highsight that was a huge burden. Well, it still is, its a constant struggle/battle still. I now try to learn to read my emotions better. Pause more often instead of keep pushing myself. Reflect on myself more. I try to separate my sensory inputs from my emotional state from my thoughts. As well as notice my inner Self more (that which just observes and changes focus). In general, I try to follow my intrinsic interests more instead of talking them down that I am not worth it or capable of doing/performing those. I try to not give all of the thoughts that my Intellect generates too much weight/value. And if it does happen, I will try to notice it whenever I make a break and look inward. I am not a master of any of this tho. I am just giving myself the time to figure it out. Without pushing myself or expecting anything. Because thats usually what prevented me from doing stuff that I actually wanted to do.
      PS: I recently revisited a game called The Witness. I played it in 2016 when it first came out, but actually didnt like it that much. I then replayed it last year and I got so much value out of it. I can highly recommend playing it, maybe even as a long term side game (dont try to rush it or look up stuff, it ruins the experience). It is a bit pricy still so better wait for a sale somewhere.

      Not sure what you mean by "posting" the controversy, I only noticed him mention that they were texting/dming him about it, figured it was mostly random community people reposting to reddit etc. Anyways, I don't think that's realistically possible. Telling a Twitch streamer to just give up on people who participate in social media (or rather, the specific but very common culture of it) is telling them to give up all their coworkers, peers, and followers. We should always definitely do what's best for ourselves, but in this case the lesson was that, in reality, things were fine - it was LS's own anxieties that stressed him, not all the activity on the internet.

    I mean he's right completing morello is a waste of gold, and because of this (delaying item spike) and the existence of pen boots and void staff it means that while oblivion orb is incredibly strong it's actually a "semi-niche" buy for champs who utilise the 200 hp stat to make it beyond efficient. The best abuser I've found is Cassiopeia, can't build pen boots, loves the HP and early pen. However, I couldn't agree with building it on Zoe for example.

    @sakushimei Před 4 lety +13

    46:20 I believe that. I went to LS's stream and asked him a question (how do improve as ADC, from platinum to challenger to pro play). He didn't answer the question but instead attacked me, saying that if you're not into challenger after two years or so, you'll probably never become a pro player.
    And it wasn't the first time I asked a question and felt a personal attack -- which is why I believe LS keeps drawing personal attacks. He's very intelligent and has a lot of knowledge - and when explaining things is when he shines the most, but sometimes a question hits something personal and in turn it draws an attack afterwards.
    I started playing seriously in mid to late 2012 (with no MOBA knowledge/background, only RTS/SC2) and got into challenger by early 2014, except I wasn't ever playing ADC because I felt like I was a scrub, so I don't know how to improve. I stopped playing seriously in 2015 and full stopped at 2017, only to come back last week and I'm already back to platinum only playing ADC. I feel like I'm slowly improving and I needed advice. Why would I ask (again?) a question like that to have a personal attack on me?
    Still believe LS is a really good coach/analyst and caster. Keep going, keep getting better.

      Knowledge stacks and you need to play more to improve. Pretty surre LS didn't know your background and though your were just some plat player trying to go pro which probably won't happen considering there are hundreds of thousands of similar players.
      Its easy to feel like you are personally attacked, but just remember that lots of the time they are generalizing things without context.
      If you really want to get better just stick to a few adcs and play until you hit a wall and then get coaching, or you can watch coaching as you climb so you can improve on your way up. The game is way more competitive compared to 2012 and challenger back then is probably somewhere in high plat in the current day or so. Gl getting challenger

      @Noire Dustx right, you should never trust everything someone says, its usually depends on perspective, however you can still trust most of the stuff they say. There are not one professional ever who has completely understood their subject. It's kinda of odd to me how LS suffers so much from other people's external perception of him when he's a high level league player and has coached players in the game. Isn't one of the most fundamental things about learning to improve is that you are only 1/10th of your games? That in order to truly reach your deserved rank, you have to play hundreds of games because there is so much variance in your teammates, a factor you CANNOT control. So, you have to let go of those factors in order to focus on the thing you CAN control, and that is yourself...
    It's something you'd think he'd understand so well, but he can't seem to apply it to the outside world because of his need for control?

    • @skullz1
      @skullz1 Před 4 lety +6

      I think the opposite, I think that logic is why he blames himself TOO much and is constantly worried about whether he could be doing something better, because that's what he learned is effective in esports. The result is that he also blames himself for the things that he can't control, e.g. in the first session I think he said something like it was his fault that he got his money stolen because he could've done more to prevent that from happening.
      And in this video I think the reason he is so stressed about what people say about his analysis or how they form their opinions, is that he has this idea that he can convince them of what he believes to be the truth, and that he has a responsibility to do so. But we know that that's not the case, he cannot actually control what they think.

      @@skullz1 i think he misjudged the point of the video, due to this fear he has of being misconstrued. Markz didn't really try to debunk him, he just used that for the title for clickbait which is something LS himself would do. The video ends up coming to the conclusion that it's a case by case basis argument and that noone should make blanket statements, as LS does. (He says he doesn't, but complaining every single time someone completes Morello in an LCK game is essentially the same thing he accuses Markz of doing in the video) I believe he doesn't truly think that Markz tried to bring him down, he simply says that to himself to not have to confront the fact that the video is actually much more thoughtful than he is willing to give any credit to, and this comes from all the insecurities he's been sharing with Dr. K up to this point. It's a shame that his exaggerated point of view on the situation lead K to believe that Markz is an asshole, lol.

    I didn't like this interview. Dr. K is really good in a bunch of his work, but I think In this one he messed up.
    I writing this with the advantage of hindsight and being able to see how this interview played out, so I know this probably come across as judgmental, but I'd like to voice my disagreement so that anyone else who sees it might be able to find some thoughts.
    In the first interview with LS, LS said he has been to dozens of therapist, and one like 3 have helped. He also talked about having a parent who seems to have been abusive. The therapist who did help him were ones who stood up for him and took his side and advocated for him.
    To put it simply, from a young age he's been silenced, the words he's said haven't mattered, and on a few occasions (like when he had to testify) his words mattered a whole lot.
    So it make a whole lot of sense why LS got bent out of shape for a week over a video. Someone telling him this-is-how-it-is, was something he faced. And what people believed made a huge impact.
    So the truth mattered. It mattered a lot. Like growing up, I imagine he not only had to listen to what his mom said, but also to himself, and then reflect on the whole situation. He had to find out for himself what the real truth was, and then figure out how other people were taking the false things his mom was saying.
    Getting out in front of the falsehoods is a reflex.
    It was tough for me to watch Dr. K ask him "if he was the arbiter of truth." Like Dr K isn't wrong. No person is that. But that's not what is going on with LS. LS needs to know his words matter, and folks care for him and want to legitimately know the truth.
    Also knowing that LS has seen that many therapist also hurt. Like when Dr K was asking him "what's the problem with people believing the wrong things?" And LS having a hard time explaining, looked painful.
    Like all those times not being able to find someone who would understand, and here's Dr K, the guys who understands, and he isn't getting it.
    Watching LS just kinda sink into his chair and make it through the end of the session looked rough. Like he was just trying to run out the clock.
    It was tough to watch.
    Dr K is great. Listening to him talk to folks has helped me get in touch with a lot of things I've been hold down, at the same time I think this interview wasn't very good.
    (Hopefully this comment helps someone. Not trying to bring anyone down by posting my negative feedback)

      His anxiety levels are that extreme. I’m guessing that he feels a bit more comfortable on camera the less his face can be seen while he speaks so that he doesn’t have to control or consider how his face appears while he’s speaking, thus speaking makes him feel less anxious on camera. Also, he might be a bit paranoid about catching the virus as well to that extreme which is also rooted in his anxiety levels. The mask brings him comfort that might seem irrational, but to him feels perfectly logical. I’m both guessing and projecting from my own experience.

So, each person he interviews (as a pro) he knows he has to approach them based upon tells he reads on them and then carefully approach the way he delivers his advice to each interviewee so that it sticks instead of landing on deaf ears they might choose to make deaf via a defense mechanism.
