      This was something I used to struggle with as well, however my solution for it was a bit unconventional....I have very good mount and back defense. So what I would do most of the time is "encourage" my opponent to go to mount - so basically not resist too much in side control. Once they get to mount I can easily (not always) sweep them. Another approach to getting out of side control is to do your best to roll into a turtle (if you have good turtle defense). Hope this helps :)

    I've heard so many of my former Martial arts teachers say that there's no such thing as defense or defense doesn't work... Yet the longer I train, the more I understand how phenomenally important it is like the example Ryan mentioned. Besides his spectacular results, Floyd Mayweather is one of the best boxers and his defense is impeccable, and for myself I've dramatically improved my own results in striking by coming up with some sound defensive principles to add to my footwork and head movement to the point where it feels easy sparring people now. It all connects.

I've found that focusing on escapes for a month solid or more helped. At the beginning I was getting crushed. But as the weeks went by, less and less white and blue belts got past my guard or subbed me. Then 3 weeks ago I didn't get subbed by any white or blues and I subbed some whites. Then 2 weeks ago I finally subbed my 1st blue belt, who weighs 135kg and I weigh 65kg. I also subbed more white belts that week.
      So I actually used the advice the Gordon/John gives in this video. Get better at escapes and guard retention 1st. Once you're hard to pin and sub, the openings present themselves and you get the subs. It's not easy and can be demoralising at 1st. But trust in the process and you'll get the results.
      I'm the oldest guy in our gym. I'm 54. So if I can do it, anyone can!!

    For anyone that’s gotten instructionals on the same topic from both John Danaher and Gordon Ryan, how do they compare? Does one have a teaching style you like better? Lastly how much of the content is similar techniques?

      @robertrodriguez5283 Před rokem

      John tends to do more repeating of key concepts. So if you are a beginner John may be best to initially learn from. Still Gordon goes through the important concepts, but tend to be more concise and progressing on to the next thing. If I feel sharp (able to focus my attention well), I will learn from Gordon with the intent to not miss anything. If I do, I can just rewind to see what I missed. If I am not feeling too sharp, I will not watch Gordan's video in one sitting, because he goes through a lot. John tend to repeat quite a lot, which I sometimes like. So if your attention fades a bit while watching John, there is nothing to worry about usually, because he usually does a significant amount of repeating. John's pace of teaching tends to be slower. They have similarities in teaching. They both tend to give an overview and afterwards they get into the specifics. I enjoy learning from them both. They both go over the same concepts, such as what you saw (defensive to offensive cycles) and other important concepts. I value hearing the same concepts from both of them, because I know the concepts they talk about are of highest priority (what is most important to know and do) rather than just knowing and doing too much which is of little value. In other words, they go over knowing and doing the few most things rather than getting lost in details of things that are of less to little value (importance).

    really wonder how he deals with kesa but when they have an underhook, not a headlock. Its nearly impossible to get inside position with your legs

    • @Silduril
      @Silduril Před 2 lety +3

      In that position you can elevate their hips with a bridge and insert your leg under them. This will make it easy to roll them to the other side. TeachMeGrappling has a great video on this, it's called "255lbs VS 155lbs Side Control ESCAPE!"
