Let me know if you think these deserve a re-match! What other car would you all like to see included in a track comparison? Let me know below which one you were rooting for and which one you think you would want to own!
mx5 nd super 200 vs brz cosworth stage 1.3 , this would be nice to see...
dsportmag.com has tuned both but i haven't seen any comparison. probably not gonna see comparison like that because its hard to get cars like that. but throwing in an idea just in case:P or maybe if anyone knows that this already happened??
dsportmag.com did very good job on tuning mx5
Alfa Romeo 4C versus mx-5 Miata ND. I bet Alfa Romeo would NEVER allow that.
LOL.
definitely! would be great to use the updated 2017+ 86/brz models since they have a shorter final drive ratio and a little more power (5 hp/torque lol)
Im rooting for the BRZ because I own a GT86 and I want a rematch xD Of curse! I would like to see a RX7 FD3S vs a Supra A80
@@azurewrath6625 Updated BRZ/86 vs update 2019 MX-5?
The weight! Don't forget Miata is 450 lbs (~200kg) lighter, which is great for a tight course like this.
Ok? So that just goes to show that the BRZ is impressive as it had bad tires and was still performing quite well. The more I compare the two it seems silly to buy the ND if you need a car that can be used regularly. I don't think it's wise to buy a car that completely lacks in utility because then it becomes a special occasion car and you end up getting something better for day to day stuff. With the BRZ I could actually use it on a daily basis, with maybe a older pickup or a Cherokee as a backup.
OspreyBravo18 you can daily a Miata pretty easily. You’d be surprised if you actually thought about what you NEED. Can’t go wrong with either car but the BRZ doesn’t offer tons more utility as a daily.
@@kogrady2409 Until you go on 1200 mile road trips or multi-week vacations, and then you realize the short comings of the Miata. I can easily fit luggage for 2-week vacations in a FT-86 platform car (BRZ, 86, FR-S). The Miata? Good luck. Also don’t forget the full set of wheels and tires.
@@gtmike916 I have no trouble doing well over two weeks in a Miata. I've done road trips in a Miata of well over 1200 miles without issue as well. To each his own.
@@Ryan....... Really? That’s pretty cool. I may just have to reevaluate on which car I would choose then. I don’t like those boxer engines period to be quite frank.
I like how when Colin is driving, the CZcams auto CC labels it as [music]. Colin's driving is officially musical.
+tehmoriz lol I’m going to send this to him.
Nice comparison. I autox my ND Miata a lot. It is so much fun!
It had been interesting to actually hear a little of what that professional driver had to say about the car. He was repeatedly cut off.
bullhcr not really
He did interrupt Colin a lot. Distractingly so.
That's what these kind of channel have become when they try to sell cars and feed you with terminologies that they don't even understand.
Collin was there to put down times... The video made the point it was trying to make, and that's what matters. Miata according to both is playful with better torque delivery, BRZ according to both is planted and still fun but needs proper tires and an alignment to compete. Of course at the end of the day the Miata is limiting in the sense you need to fit the car, and the car has to work for your lifestyle, the BRZ however is much more spacious and useable if you need a car that you can drive every day.
the boxer engine is a double edged sword, gives you low center of gravity and almost no engine vibration
However, having 2 cylinder heads that far apart make the exhaust runners very long and thats very bad for scavenging at low rpm.
agreed. gotta keep the revs up to stay in the powa
Funny thing, here in Mexico the BRZ (MY17 btw) goes for 535 thousand mexican pesos which is close to 27 thousand US dollars, there is only one trim which I believe is the most spec'd. In the other hand the MX-5 (2019 with the new engine) goes for 380 thousand mexican pesos which is more or less 20 thousand US dollars, this is for the soft top version which is close to the Club Model (17 inch wheels and LSD, but no spoiler or brace in the engine) the RF goes for 490 thousand pesos (which would be close to 24 thousand US dollars) but onlly comes in Automatic transmision and the equipment is like a GT trim. So here in Mexico the Softtop MX-5 is a steal.
correction me if I am being wrong, but is the miata not made in Mexico?
@@_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_- the MX-5 is made in the Hiroshima plant, the new Mazda 3 is made though.
@@Alexander5R ah ok you guys have a crazy good price then. Here where I am is equivalent to US 37000$ for Miata :(
@@_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_- Yes, I don't know what's the deal with Mazda, but the MX-5 here is a no brainer, it's the least expensive 2 door car, convertible car and sport car here on the market. The only issue are our roads which are filled with potholes and bumps, and you can feel each and one of those in your seat.
Cute in my country the 2019 the mx5 sells for 60k usd
Great video. Much fun. And the Miata wins as usual against any sports car, being bone stock. Respect for the BRZ also though. Great car.
This is what we want to see. Now we need to see them on a bigger course.
I have owned/own both an FRS/86 and ND Miata (Club in USA). FRS was a '13, daily drove and competitively autocrossed here in San Diego. Torque dip killed all enjoyment of its wonderful platform. So much so I traded it in for a '13 Civic Si just 4 months after purchase. I now own/drive/autocross an ND Miata, going on 2+ years, and absolutely love this Miata (previous Miatas: 94, and 3 '06's). Miata out drives, out handles, better fuel economy, more giggles per mile, top down fun, lightness....and....TORQUE. ND shoots through traffic, blasts up mountain roads, and can actually make a daring mountain road pass around traffic, something my FRS struggled to do. ND was 5 grand more, but worth every penny. I normally don't keep my cars this long, but can't let go of this little gem. I don't daily drive this one, I have a brand new Civic Si sedan for those duties. She can't hang with today's boost buggies and high power sports cars in a straight line, but flick her through the twisty roads and not much can match her performance.
zo7vette Torque dip is easily remedied in the 86 with a tune. The torque from the ND is certainly nice but i prefer having to ring out the 86 for the high end hp. Different strokes for different folks.
I have owned many cars myself but my 17 ND club soft top... best car purchase I have ever made. I don't see myself selling this car....for a looooooooong looong time. This is a perfect car really
@@gauchegaucho hairdresser?
Great video mate, super fun and entertaining.
Good stuff. Not enough car CZcamsrs have autocross content.
I would have liked to see more analysis of the course/driving technique but that might be views kryptonite.
EDIT: Nevermind, you have it in the second half of the video.
+Toby Corbin I try to have a good mix. It’s difficult to keep everyone satisfied though. Guys like you and me could watch a good driver just drive silently all day. But not everyone is like us lol
I added KW Clubsports, aftermarket rear LCA’s, 17x9 wheels , Michelin Supersports & a custom alignment to my BRZ. Transformed the whole car, it slays the curves now. That chicane right before the trees though, not the brightest of ideas unless you want to kill a few cars.
Oh man i love this collab
Throttle house and straight pipes
I see them doing autocross at the CAA centre (formerly Powerade Centre) all the time when I drive by. Always looks fun.
Dope video YET AGAIN
I rooted for the mx-5 so hard. Happy it won. The engine is phenomenal.
Engine is nothing special. Its an efficient engine. The chassis is phenomenal and every components engineered to weigh less makes it a blast
Was nice seeing this even though it's now old. Would love to see you redo this with the 2022 86/BRZ! Also like the ending credit song, reminds me of the 2000's haha
Great video! Love it.
That boxer engine noise 😍
thats amazing video for buyers
I own a 2017 toyota 86, so I’m definitely biased. I THINK the newer one got a revised gear ratio, and if you were to put UEL headers, and a tune, you would still be under the Miata’s price tag, plus that torque would be just as present at lower rpms.
Totally true!
yeeeaaa powerade center!
Oh wow, the auto-x events I've been to here in New England you're lucky to get 3 runs in... I wonder if things have changed since I did it.
I've got it ! Throttle House , The Straight Pipes, and.....THE DRAGONS TAIL in a MX 5 !!!! GET MAZDA IN ON THIS IF POSSIBLE in a 2020 GSP /CLUB SOFT TOP IN RED ! And if possible with the SPORT PACKAGE !
I had a Mk1 MX-5, in British Racing Green. Slower than the one in this video (and no traction control to even turn off) but still loads of fun, and attached to tons of happy memories and trips. Plus with the wonderful (even if not that aerodynamic) pop-up headlights. This one also has the convertible thing going on vs the Subaru, which I respect for its focus on simple driving fun just like the Mazda, but the MX-5 just has more going for it in my view.
If the BRZ didn't have the torque dip, I would've bought it instead of my MX5 ND RF. That torque dip is a serious deal breaker.
Header and tune eliminates it.
Any suspension differences between these would easily change with tires and suspension upgrades.
Lifted_Above true, but then you can do the same to the mx5 and get even more out of it
@@DanMarcelino nd2 miata makes an extra 26hp 3 ftlbs and revs to 7500rpm with a stronger transmission. Meanwhile the frs 86 only gained 5 hp
I would like a ST Miata ND too, but I’ve heard scary things about the transmission failing at events like these!!
@@adamlreid it was on the first nd miata's 2015 and 2016 they would be broken in 10k miles but they resolved it under factory warranty as it was so common that they had it in the forums as a class action recall. By 2017 and 18 it was fixed the 2019+ has a revised improved transmission with 2 light flywheels and a safety mechanism that has a half inch travel in the clutch to activate the sensors, and you can't shift by accident because it has a 2 step process with (1) the dogs letting the transmission pathway into gear and (2) not fully engaging the gear until is forced into gear and clutch is applied. My uncle tried to grind my transmission and wouldn't let it go in place and stalled on him. Try it for yourself.
Another video needed
i had a drive of the miata.. it's just soo rev-happy :) .. Did some acceleration videos ... just amazing :) ..sorry for the Subaru
8:10 crickets... mine does it too :)
Seemed like you had more fun in the MX-5🤔🤔👍👍👍😎😎 Straight Pipes!!,👍👍👍
Hugh, I was surprised that the Miata won by so much.
Im not surprised
Jk
After about a year of ND-ownership and 18,000km in the car, my biggest complaint is indeed the non-telescoping steering wheel in combination with the rather coarse seat-adjustments. Thanks to those issues, I'll probably never find the perfect seating position.
LOL.. yeah.. I know. But I won't be able to swap my 2017 for a 2019 ... well, not anytime soon, anyway ... :)
i kinda suspected mx5 will win. technically mx5 is lighter and it is way smaller. because of that mx5 is of course way more fun to drive especially with the top down.
i dont have a ND, but i probably will buy one in the future if they put the skyactiv X in a mx5 and if i crash my MRS and survive.
2019 mx5 has more top end power, back up camera, and telescope steering wheel. now if they added a normal size glove box in front of the passenger.
true
Is between the seats behind the center console is a glovebox
Would love I see a s2000 thrown in the mix.
+T Ly I can make that happen next season.
I vote for that.
SCCA had this question answered way ahead of you. MX5 is in CS and BRZ is in DS unless it's the STI then it's in CS. The CS in nationals was occupied by mx5 and you can barely see any other car in CS.
S2k vs rx8 would be interesting and updated brz ts vs updated Miata (before new gen brz comes out)
what is that metal badge on the MX-5's interior?
did i hear his say that the ND Miata had 155hp? why would be rated less than the previous Gen?
I think it would have been a lot closer if the BRZ had a proper suspension setup. The no camber on the front wheels really kills a lot of the handling. But the MX5 shorter wheelbase will always be better for autox regardless of power.
I wish there were more of these kinda events here in Germany…
But…but you have the Ring!
True…
@@davidgolfgti1, And the Autobahn.
I know this is an old video, but is this the same autocross that the straight pipes were at, filming their civic si vs elantra sport? Also great video! I hope to one day own a brz or 86, just look like fun solid car for someone who doesnt like breaking the speed limit much like me lol.
Yep it was. Colin and I at these autocross events a lot. (Colin is a series champ) but the straight pipes happened to be there that day.
wish there are fewer camera shots of the driver and more of the road and car.
I'm confused... it's 39C (102F) and there is a pile of snow at 9:41?
The ND did a faster time but I believe it'd be at least 2 seconds faster with the top up. (And windows up, same with the BRZ)
why?
Top up would help only at higher speeds, not during autocross in first and second gear.
Lol a little unrelated but did anyone hear that high pressure fuel pump chirping away on the BRZ..... just had my 15 in for its recall.... thought they fixed that🤔
It's not fixed because it is supposed to chirp. Even if you replace it, the chirping comes back. Fuels like Chevron with Techron (additives) help out though. Or E85 if you go that route.
Let's keep the cars stock on their original tires on the next match against the 2022 versions! I think the BRZ/86 might be biting at the heels of the miata!
this should be done again. With the new GR86 and ND3
People in Miata always laugh and smile.
All other reviewers mention that the Miata has body roll that the BRZ doesn't, hmmm
It has almost the same power, but is 200 kg less weight. At least for stock cars it was clear who would win.
first and second gear . why he still shifting trough the cones????
The steering wheel telescopes in the newer Miatas.
Good morning
86's really need a header to smooth out the Rev range. It's a shame they ship like that out of the box.
more tire specs please
geeez..you should have let the guy do the talking instead of you talking over him..
Excellent observation.
I’m half way through this video and you sure have spent a lot of time defending the Subaru’s handling.
The answer is always...
How can the torque dip in the brz be improved?
MrTadreis1 ez buy an oft/paired up with uel header and e85 and watch it fly and enjoy your trip
Headers and a stage 2 tune
It didn't look like he was downshifting into 1st around the tighter corners in the BRZ, like he was in the Mx-5? Is that accurate? I have to go into 1st in my BRZ around tight corners in autoX, otherwise the torque dip just eats up .2 or .3. If so, that would definitely account for some time. He should not have been 3 full seconds ahead in the miata, if he was driving the BRZ the exact same.
Also, the tires (the best tires -RE71R vs even the 2nd or 3rd place tire like the 615K+ ) can be a guaranteed 1.5-2 seconds on a 65 second course like that.
Also, there is the weight, the miata is much lighter, with no roof, so the CoG is not THAT far off of the BRZ, somewhat negating the low engine advantage in the BRZ.
I am typically within .2 or .3 of a second to the ND miatas in my region and they are seriously fast. Here are the results of our most recent event (7/22/2018) where I was .2 seconds behind an ND miata in raw time: www.scca-susq.com/latest-news/club-news/results/2018-ax-results/2018-ax-results-event-10-722-pm/
-this would make sense, considering they are in CS and I am in DS, so they should be .2 faster or so. And he was on better tires than me.
SOLOIIguru people say it's almost impossible to shift from 2 to 1 in the brz when in moving
@@dumyjobby I own one and have raced it in events where I have shifted in to 1st and 3rd with no problems. I also use motul gear/trans oil, so that likely helps make downshifting into 1st a bit easier
Yeahh my 86 cant shift into first unless im doing less than 5km/h- I think a lot of people have that problem ahaha
Good morning? I liked what you said about the brz/86, the first time I drove the manual I felt like it was insanely fast for a daily commuter. People think it's slow but I smoke the shit out of everyone who's tried to race me.
I don't get it, why compare these two? One is a small light refined convertible British-go-kart copy and the other a sports coupé. Different classes for different driving experiences.
Would be better to compare the MX-5 to another small, light convertible, maybe something European like an Alpha or Convertible Mini, and the BRZ against a 1973 240Z - lol
BRZ is way more expensive than MX-5 in my country... MX-5 is kinda cheap should I go from nice 2004 STI to MX-5 ?
mostly thinking about fuel economy to be doing this
Smart choice
my 2018 BRZ averages 32 MPG
I’m averaging over 34 mpg in my ‘18 Miata GT, but I don’t drive aggressively a lot. Even if I did though, I’m sure I’d still be getting 30+ mpg.
wrx vs ?
Thumbs down on all videos that cover car sounds with "music" in a desperate attempt to signal that something "exciting" is happening in the videos. Pure car sounds tell the story.
I’d get so lost in that sea of cones.

I want to see that GTI right behind them in this battle.
Great video. There is however more to turning the traction control completely off than just hitting the VSC button in the BRZ. Wondering if this was done? I autocross my FRS at a Miata sanctioned autocross session every year and rarely see an ND Miata. I'm told it's because of the gear ratios. That being said, I usually get spanked by NB's and well sorted NA's.
+Antonio Petrelli yea. Are you talking about the pedal dance?
The pedal dance is worth doing if you aren't. I can't tell you what it's doing because I can't feel any difference but I tested on track and autocross and it's consistently worth 1 second per minute of driving for me. I personally tested on 4 separate occasions with consistent results too, 2 autocross events and 2 track days. YMMV but I strongly recommend trying it out for yourselves.
smooth is fast.
Ugh I remember this day. Sweltering heat, no communication from the organizers that CZcamsrs would be stopping the event to shoot this video.
There were marshals waiting in the sun confused why Colin was taking multiple runs with no other cars.
No apology, nothing. Extremely disappointing.
Should have driven that RX8 there. It's basically the sedan MX5 but with 100 more HP on tap.
BTW this is some sad autocross course.
eeeee the answer still remains MIATA !
I would call it a bee r zed like a good hozer.
youre paying an extra 8k more for the miata, you can easily boost a frs then smoke most cars at a track while still momentum drive it.
Don't talk with your helmet on!
39 degrees. Lmfao. It's been like 90 here for two months, and I'm in the Northeast.
are you in the USA because the Mazda in USA has less power.
Compare that same miata to a Brz TS and talk then, literally a base model brz, get a ts and rematch those and the miata will be gone by a lot
hot comparison..
I try it on an android game, miata vs gt86 and 86 quicker 0,5 sec
(just on a game :D)
Hmm poor guy thinks a brz is fast.
Miata wins on the track (all the fanboys are dripping wet right now)
Brz wins in real life. (Sorry fanboy but life is not an autoX)
1- Everyone can fit in a Brz. Wife and kid could come along.
2- A Boot!!! You can actualy bring things in a twin. Things that do not normaly fit in a Miata's trunk. Like a freaking gallon of windshield washer fluid.
I had an FR-S. Its worth noting that it isn't the most robust car out there. Random things started to fall apart on it. Maybe it was just mine, but I'm pretty particular with my cars too
Been racing mine for 4 plus years so far. I think you bought the wrong twin.
Your kids (and your wife) would still hate you for making them duck and crawl into the back, and even then kids older than 12 it's a squeeze. The GT86/ BRZ is a horrible family car too. Neither the MX-5 or the GT86 were designed with *practicality* in mind, they are just fun cars for you and your girl (or bf), not family cars.
I'd argue that the MX-5 is a whole world more fun to drive on the roads (esp. back roads) than the BRZ. MX-5 wins on both the tracks and the roads.
First mistake is having a wife and kid. Better off marrying the miata.
@@usrincludename.h2394 Maybe the BRZ isn't a great family car (family = at least one kid) but it's still vastly more practical than a Miata day-to-day. It's more comfortable for drivers and passengers who are over 6' tall, you can fit two passengers if you really have to, it has 50% more trunk space, and vastly more storage space than a Miata if you fold the rear seats down. Plus there are practical advantages to having a hardtop (no leaks, less noise). The BRZ is my only car. I can't imagine the Miata being my only car.
Canadian car, presenter and location -- but still with the Bee-Are-Zee.
It is a BR ZED. ZED. We speak properly north of the border. C'mon now.
Why not just say 39? We know what you mean. Stop bowing to the Yanks.
Both of these cars are slow and handle like s*** I have a BmwZ4 3.0 si that would destroy both of these cars in a heartbeat , Brz & Miata are underpowered by today's standards. Their horsepower is subpar and the torque is laughable on both of those vehicles.
Sure, lets compare the MX-5 and BRZ/FRS/GT86 to a car which costs nearly twice as much (when it was new). Underpowered for what exactly? Charging around the highway for no reason? Then yes, they are underpowered... except generic public roads exist where 90km/h is the speed limit.
Your shitbox will depreciate like crazy and cost you hundreds or even thousands in repairs because of its unreliability. You only really need all that HP to roadrage/drive like a maniac on the highway and be a general nuisance. Its not the same philosophy than the 86 and Miata at all, not by a long shot. You sir, are an absolute idiot.
Weird flex for a guy who paid double for a car with roughly the same power to weight ratio as a Miata that you NEVER see at a racetrack. Glad you are happy with your car though!! I know I’m happy with my ND!
Let me say, I own a BMW Z4 3.0 also and this guy is clearly an idiot. I love my Z4 but the Miata and brz are also really great cars and they all have their differences. Sure the Z has more power but it’s also a little heavier. The only real z4 to compare is the first gen. After that they lost their identity
OP got the roasting he deserved - from a V8 Vantage 4.7 and (former MX-5) owner...
