Ok? So that just goes to show that the BRZ is impressive as it had bad tires and was still performing quite well. The more I compare the two it seems silly to buy the ND if you need a car that can be used regularly. I don't think it's wise to buy a car that completely lacks in utility because then it becomes a special occasion car and you end up getting something better for day to day stuff. With the BRZ I could actually use it on a daily basis, with maybe a older pickup or a Cherokee as a backup.

Collin was there to put down times... The video made the point it was trying to make, and that's what matters. Miata according to both is playful with better torque delivery, BRZ according to both is planted and still fun but needs proper tires and an alignment to compete. Of course at the end of the day the Miata is limiting in the sense you need to fit the car, and the car has to work for your lifestyle, the BRZ however is much more spacious and useable if you need a car that you can drive every day.

Funny thing, here in Mexico the BRZ (MY17 btw) goes for 535 thousand mexican pesos which is close to 27 thousand US dollars, there is only one trim which I believe is the most spec'd. In the other hand the MX-5 (2019 with the new engine) goes for 380 thousand mexican pesos which is more or less 20 thousand US dollars, this is for the soft top version which is close to the Club Model (17 inch wheels and LSD, but no spoiler or brace in the engine) the RF goes for 490 thousand pesos (which would be close to 24 thousand US dollars) but onlly comes in Automatic transmision and the equipment is like a GT trim. So here in Mexico the Softtop MX-5 is a steal.

I have owned/own both an FRS/86 and ND Miata (Club in USA). FRS was a '13, daily drove and competitively autocrossed here in San Diego. Torque dip killed all enjoyment of its wonderful platform. So much so I traded it in for a '13 Civic Si just 4 months after purchase. I now own/drive/autocross an ND Miata, going on 2+ years, and absolutely love this Miata (previous Miatas: 94, and 3 '06's). Miata out drives, out handles, better fuel economy, more giggles per mile, top down fun, lightness....and....TORQUE. ND shoots through traffic, blasts up mountain roads, and can actually make a daring mountain road pass around traffic, something my FRS struggled to do. ND was 5 grand more, but worth every penny. I normally don't keep my cars this long, but can't let go of this little gem. I don't daily drive this one, I have a brand new Civic Si sedan for those duties. She can't hang with today's boost buggies and high power sports cars in a straight line, but flick her through the twisty roads and not much can match her performance.

It didn't look like he was downshifting into 1st around the tighter corners in the BRZ, like he was in the Mx-5? Is that accurate? I have to go into 1st in my BRZ around tight corners in autoX, otherwise the torque dip just eats up .2 or .3. If so, that would definitely account for some time. He should not have been 3 full seconds ahead in the miata, if he was driving the BRZ the exact same.
Also, the tires (the best tires -RE71R vs even the 2nd or 3rd place tire like the 615K+ ) can be a guaranteed 1.5-2 seconds on a 65 second course like that.
Also, there is the weight, the miata is much lighter, with no roof, so the CoG is not THAT far off of the BRZ, somewhat negating the low engine advantage in the BRZ.
I am typically within .2 or .3 of a second to the ND miatas in my region and they are seriously fast. Here are the results of our most recent event (7/22/2018) where I was .2 seconds behind an ND miata in raw time: www.scca-susq.com/latest-news/club-news/results/2018-ax-results/2018-ax-results-event-10-722-pm/
-this would make sense, considering they are in CS and I am in DS, so they should be .2 faster or so. And he was on better tires than me.

I don't get it, why compare these two? One is a small light refined convertible British-go-kart copy and the other a sports coupé. Different classes for different driving experiences.
Would be better to compare the MX-5 to another small, light convertible, maybe something European like an Alpha or Convertible Mini, and the BRZ against a 1973 240Z - lol

Great video. There is however more to turning the traction control completely off than just hitting the VSC button in the BRZ. Wondering if this was done? I autocross my FRS at a Miata sanctioned autocross session every year and rarely see an ND Miata. I'm told it's because of the gear ratios. That being said, I usually get spanked by NB's and well sorted NA's.

The pedal dance is worth doing if you aren't. I can't tell you what it's doing because I can't feel any difference but I tested on track and autocross and it's consistently worth 1 second per minute of driving for me. I personally tested on 4 separate occasions with consistent results too, 2 autocross events and 2 track days. YMMV but I strongly recommend trying it out for yourselves.

Miata wins on the track (all the fanboys are dripping wet right now)
Brz wins in real life. (Sorry fanboy but life is not an autoX)
1- Everyone can fit in a Brz. Wife and kid could come along.
2- A Boot!!! You can actualy bring things in a twin. Things that do not normaly fit in a Miata's trunk. Like a freaking gallon of windshield washer fluid.

Your kids (and your wife) would still hate you for making them duck and crawl into the back, and even then kids older than 12 it's a squeeze. The GT86/ BRZ is a horrible family car too. Neither the MX-5 or the GT86 were designed with *practicality* in mind, they are just fun cars for you and your girl (or bf), not family cars.
I'd argue that the MX-5 is a whole world more fun to drive on the roads (esp. back roads) than the BRZ. MX-5 wins on both the tracks and the roads.

@@usrincludename.h2394 Maybe the BRZ isn't a great family car (family = at least one kid) but it's still vastly more practical than a Miata day-to-day. It's more comfortable for drivers and passengers who are over 6' tall, you can fit two passengers if you really have to, it has 50% more trunk space, and vastly more storage space than a Miata if you fold the rear seats down. Plus there are practical advantages to having a hardtop (no leaks, less noise). The BRZ is my only car. I can't imagine the Miata being my only car.

      @BB-wz6bx Před 4 lety +6

Sure, lets compare the MX-5 and BRZ/FRS/GT86 to a car which costs nearly twice as much (when it was new). Underpowered for what exactly? Charging around the highway for no reason? Then yes, they are underpowered... except generic public roads exist where 90km/h is the speed limit.
