  • Yes that's right! Today we'll be comparing these two BELOVED CHEAP sports cars to see just what makes them so popular.
    The Mazda MX-5 has been a staple of car enthusiast circles for decades at this point and serves as our benchmark for comparing the latest Subaru BRZ, which features a few pretty great upgrades and might even give the fan-favourite Mazda MX-5 a run for it's money! We'll be looking at 0-100km/h times, driving performance, and interior/exterior features so you know just which one is right for you.

    Have had my BRZ(ed) for a week now and love it. Was originally going to get the MX5 but after sitting in one, the complete and utter lack of room swayed me towards the Subbie. Drives well, more space, looks incredible in the WR Blue (10th Anniversary spec) with black rims and sounds better than the MX5. Now, just to get a space saver spare wheel to reclaim some boot space and I’m set.

    • @Andrew-zs5tc
      @Andrew-zs5tc Před rokem

      Do you have a source for a space saver spare? In the US, I keep getting told there is no space saver available for the BRZ from suppliers. Many that own BRZs say an impreza spare works fine.

      It doesn’t sound better than the MX5, it’s all fake engine noise. The car has zero sound.

    I just purchased the 23' brz 2 days ago. I absolutely f love my car! Fun to drive,...I opted for the manual purposely. BTW not sure what your definition of cheap vs expensive is but I can guarantee you that I worked my ass off for every penny that I paid on my not so cheap BRZ! 😉

    I had an MX-5 (the 1.5 litre model), it was amazing fun to drive. But like you said I had to keep a second car for daily use. The MX-5 has a tight interior and I also found the seats a bit lacking in support and durability. The manual transmission was the best I’ve ever experienced.

    • @ondrejkrpec7180
      @ondrejkrpec7180 Před 10 měsíci +1

      Agree with the seats, when buying ND Miata then the Recaro seats are must have, the standard seats are that great for your lower back.

  • @denn15m8
    @denn15m8 Před rokem +4

    I Just went through this myself and ended up going the GR86. I'm 186cm and the mx5 even with the seat all the way back just felt a little uncomfortable and the weird driving position of the ND put me off. You sit with your legs off to the side and not straight which was off putting for me. Also I've owned both cars before as older versions (2012 86 & 1990 Japanese Eunos roadster (mx5)) before and the new mx5 is missing the raw sportiness of the older ones, it's much nicer car inside and out than the gr86 though, but the ability to throw the 86 sideways at any time did it for me. The MX5 felt like you had to be going really hard to enjoy the handling, the 86 feels alive even at slow speeds.

  • @theretoocs
    @theretoocs Před 11 měsíci +3

    I am an Mx-5 ND owner. I love the car! If you are looking for a convertible, then the BRZ/GR8 is just not on your shopping list. It's an odd comparison, performance is comparable, but the deal breaker as always is you can't take the roof off the BRZ. If you need space in the back and practicality is important, then sure, the BRZ wins, but if you are fine with a smaller cabin and smaller boot (trunk) then the MX-5 is ideal. Also, I don't believe the the Brembo's are worth it. It's important to note that ONLY the front brakes a Brembo, the rear calipers are standard brakes but painted red! It might be useful if you are doing a lot of track work with the car, but for day to day driving the standard brakes are actually very very good. Regarding practicality, my wife and I went on a 5 week interstate road-trip in the MX-5, we took two small wheelie carry-on cabin bags that you'd take on a flight, plus a couple of backpacks. No problems at all!

      @theretoocs, great review. I am on the market for MX-5 RF. You covered everything I was worried about w.r.t practicality. I agree brembo brakes dont matter if you not doing track.! Do you have the soft top or RF? Which one do you like the best?

    • @theretoocs
      @theretoocs Před 8 měsíci

      @@krisrocker437 thanks! I have the soft top, saw no need for the heavier folding RF top. It’s the pure MX-5 experience. Anecdotal evidence suggests the RF might be a little noisier when open, the side buttresses causing some wind flow disturbance. Even at speed in the soft top you can hear music, take a phone call and chat to your passenger without raising your voice. Very happy with that choice.

    Subaru BRZ has a boxer engine and subaru are known rally car champions and all sedans are specked to rally car specs also all sedans have always been minimal optional extras as your paying for performance not blind spot indicators the Mazda is based on a family car experience with a slower engine and not heavy torque engine so its going to be a elderly person cruiser for sundays

    My mx5 ND1 screen has spider cracks at the corner. It is a known issue by Mazda for that generation. They refuse to repair it outside warranty. Poor form by Mazda. I was going to upgrade to ND2 but the experience has pushed me to the BRZ. I now drive the 2023 BRZ with many pros over the mx5. The manual of the BRZ is very good but Mx5 is slightly better.

    • @miatand1156

      I have a 2016 mx-5 and after the woeful after sales experience mazda gave me , including dishonesty and refusal to repair things they broke and denying two warranty claims, I swore never to give them a cent more. It now gets serviced by a great private mechanic and if I were ever to recommend a car to buy new it would be either KIA or Hyundai. Because of Mazda Australias terrible attitude, I refuse to upgrade my pathetic head unit through them. Looking at an aftermarket upgrade as it's so shitty and slow the rest of the interior is falling apart and the leather on all surfaces wore very badly and that was after twelve months from new and there is rust starting in several places. It's a real shame that you believe all the hype and because maz Aust have such a terrible attitude to looking after owners that it becomes a big no to repeat purchase.
