I believe the FDA didn't have the power to regulate cigarettes which is why people thought they were okay because companies basically legally lied about it.

We had PLENTY of plastic in the 80's. Most of our day to day glitter jewelry was plastic, our jelly shoes were plastic, our bracelets and ear rings were plastic, the two tones of gel we put in our hair came in plastic, all of the cleaning liquid came in plastic, cameras, Walkman, plastic wrapped food, all of the frozen food (including some ice cream), there was less plastic used with food, but we were absolutely surrounded by plastic in other ways.

I remember I used to be pretty scared of spiders and bugs in general. But one day, while doom-scrolling Reddit, I noticed a video of a jumping spider walking around on someone's hand. They brought their other hand near and it started doing these frantic leg movements, to reach out to the other hand (apparently they love going to higher places) and it looked like (and was captioned such too) it was asking for "uppies" like a little child.

Snakes hibernate in the winter in Canada but they're active in Spring, Summer, and Fall. We have all kinds of species of snake, but most of them aren't that dangerous. I did accidentally step on one in the grass once though and it chased me for quite awhile.

In my family we love spiders that nest around lights. We will even turn the light on for a bit after dark to lure bugs into the web. It gets rid of almost all of the bugs and makes the outdoor space actually livable.
