WT - Reisen Tide! A6M Arcade Montage

- I'd flown the A6M2 and A6M3 quite a lot lately - going for the 280 kill skin for the former & the dogtag skin for the latter. Its been quite a while since I've zero'd and it took me a dozen battles before I found my rhythm with the plane.
I recorded some of the battles & thought I'd share the fun - also I became increasingly bold in where I positioned my plane, which shows in the latter half of the video. My tactics got me shot down quite a lot, usually by a swarm of angry reds, but they also produced some epic dogfights...

Cliff notes:-
1st Dogfight starting at 0:23 went for nearly 4 minutes, with Aceleus trying (and nearly succeeding) in exposing the A6M2's lack of high-altitude performance with continued climbing spirals. I very quickly realized that using flaps would get me killed, but even without them it was all I could do to avoid stalling in a position where he could turn & shoot me down. We had an even more interesting dogfight develop later in the game, his Spit Vb vs my Ki-44 otsu at 6000m, until a Ki-61 interrupted us and spoiled the fun.
As shown at 1:46 and 3:00, zeros are deadly in a low altitude diving attack. I included the climbing La-5 kill at 2:38, because it shows a change of tactics needed with a zero to handle the threat of helicoptering planes & turn them into kills. You can't try to out-climb them (in a spiral or otherwise) as they'll often have more power than you, and if they do stall the chances are you won't be able to dive on them quick enough to get the kill before they escape. Instead you should dive toward them, evading any head-on attempt, and then look to quickly turn back on them while they're still climbing & confused as to where you've gone, after which you quickly regain your altitude.
The battle at 3:17, where I staked a claim about 2km in front of the enemy spawn at a tempting altitude, was born of an attempt to get more involved in the game, as if nobody's climbing you either have to bait them into attacking you or abandon your altitude and dive into the furball. As it was an Air Dom I chose the first option. I've also done this in Ground Strike battles - sometimes I'm shot down in flames after being swarmed by multiple planes or after making a mistake, but if often produces epic dogfights.
If the He112 had been an A-0 I doubt I'd have survived. Ditto if the Bf109 had simply climbed above me and performed diving attacks (which is what the P-51 did that I then shot down in his zoom climb), rather than the FW190-like strategy he adopted - although he certainly kept me on my toes.

+Acaleus Khan Ah you're too generous, especially with that second Spit vs Ki-44 fight. From what I recall, you were matching me in that battle & neither of us was gaining an advantage. Until that 61 ripped an aileron off - then I was done for ;)
That run over their spawn was epic. Been stuck on Madden since December, but this vid has inspired me to come back to Warthunder for a bit!
Absolutely gorgeous use of spiral climbs and amazing luck with those snap-rolls, the relatively low roll-rate on the Zeros is usually what get's me killed in faux headons.

A6Ms are very fun, but like you said "you have to be switched on". I find this to be painfully true. I tend to play less frequently, but longer sessions and find staying in " the zone" so to speak, difficult at times.

+korgeth That was actually one of the easier skins - the 280 kill A6M2 skin has taken quite some time & perseverance to achieve, and the M3 is a demonstrably better plane (more engine power, improved roll, more ammo).
Which is to say that I think you should definitely go for the skin - you might even enjoy it :)
+long5hot lol yeah, i have them all except a6m3 and the g2. just never liked the a6m's, but to be fair never flown them much either.
+korgeth The main thing I find with the A6Ms is you need to be mentally switched on. As you have to take risks in order to get kills, any lapse in concentration or sloppy thinking will get you shot down as quick as you can blink, yet you still need to be aggressive & put yourself in harm's way - and that's an excellent learning experience that can be carried over to other planes.
Nice to see my favorite Japanese Gem in action again! I've been going through my FTP games in cycles; from War Thunder it went to World of Warships, then Steel Ocean, and now World of Tanks. At this rate, I'll be back in this game by Easter. ;-)

+flip [100] Heh, I'm only making the occasional montage because yours inspired me to do so (and because sometimes I find tutorials too daunting & I need a break). The A6M3 skin is indeed awesome. I can't help but wonder why the Japanese didn't paint all of their planes like that :) The P-51 skin shrieks "freedom" and "murica" ... but the other skins aren't that great. I only unlocked the 5 needed to get the P-51A, which seems to be a far better plane in RB than AB.

+long5hot pick a plane that suits the song...if it's a slower paced song, then maybe a turn fighter or stall fighting plane but for a faster paced song do something that you just dive in with a ton of speed and kill everything (d9, p63, try the la7...its insane)
You always teached us, that energyfighting is the most effective way to go. Actually sometimes you bored me a bit with just another stallfight.
But looking to this video, it seems you just fooled us over years. In your heart of hearts you are a damn turnfighter! On high altitude of course, as a turnfight should be performed. However it looks like you had a lot of fun doing so. And a bit of sweat, too. ;)

Excellent montage! I recently discovered just how fun this plane is.
That last Bf 109 had no honour. He could have at least taken satisfaction in that he lasted as long as he did.

+MadnerKami Usually for me too, but to be fair I never took a solid hit in that dogfight. They were all glancing blows from light caliber weapons - also I've had fires go out quite regularly with my Zeroes, which is totally wrong of course but it happens.

Also, I've mainly been focusing on the British and German trees and a bit of the USA however, I feel like giving the Japanese planes a shot. What recommendations could you offer me that will help me in my grind? Are there any key strengths and weaknesses with the different Japanese lines?

Japan has a mix of playstyles, despite its reputation as a strictly turnfighting nation. A6Ms obviously are turners but as I point out in my vids that doesn't mean you should necessarily just take them to the low level furball as so many players do (and die a lot). Ki-43s are also turners with much faster roll speed than the A6Ms, and they're lighter planes & extremely good climbers. You need to be very sharp when flying these planes. Never fly in a straight line, practice strong situational awareness, expect to be attacked and know how to avoid & counter it. The N1Ks in tier 4 are the ultimate turners in the Japanese line.
Then there's the Ki-61s, which are energy fighters although thanks to their strong rudders they can turn quite well in Arcade (not the other modes), but they lack speed compared to energy fighters of other nations.
The Ki-44s are true energy fighters. Very fast, climb extremely well, don't turn at all well with elevator but again (Arcade only) their rudders are very good. Same is true with the J2Ms, Ki-84s and J7M1 - these planes are interceptors first & foremost. Oh and the Ki-45s fit that pattern too, though they lack climbrate and power. They are not turnfighters, which is how a lot of players try to use them.

And often I get friendly comments from whoever was trying to shoot me down (and often succeeding) which reveal them to be viewers of my channel. As indeed happened with Acaleus after our dogfights, the first of which was briefly shown in this vid.

(i dont see how my spit ix is any red at all. perhaps the RAF removed the red roundel in pacific theatre to avoid bulls XD)

+Mob Barley I hadn't heard of Steve - just listened to a few of his tracks & I can see the similarity. Knopfler adopted a deep south "stomp" riff for this song, which is exactly the kind of music Steve excels at. I must say that Steve isn't exactly my cup of tea though ;)

A6M2s r very easy to defeat. I got into a turn fight with one and by climbing and looping you can defeat them.

+Brandon Williams Well its certainly part of the equation - it shows you where to look for trades. For me, I prefer to trade in line with a trend than looking for reversals (unless there's a reversal pattern such as a Wolfe Wave), and I need to see either pin bars or engulfing bars as my entry trigger, plus a gap to the next supply/demand zone that allows 2:1 or greater reward to risk ratio.

+Crisean Dalomba All are unstable planes by nature, especially if your wings aren't aligned with the direction of your target as the recoil will send your shots wide. Hence try to roll and line your wings up both before & while shooting. Another thing you can do in the P-400 and P-40 (not the P-39s) is to aim well ahead of the target and walk your shots gently back toward it. Also, practice using zoom when you shoot - it really does help a lot.
A6Ms actually suck in the way you can take hits in its crappy excuse for a snap roll.

I find it very important to watch the enemy closely in the snap roll and if I feel he's getting a bead on me, or if its simply taking too long to merge, I'll change it up by rudder-turning or snap rolling in the opposite direction. I did the former right toward the end of this vid in fact, just before the 109 pilot J'd out.
