I love how in the 90s Plaza Saint-Hubert was stuck in the 70s and today it's the 90s. It is a perpetual time capsule.
So true!!!
Merci d'avoir parlé français en commandant les patisseries
His command of French is truly impressive.
yes!! it's just so deeply appreciated
The shock, as a Montréal citizen AND huge Tranna Wintour fan, to casually scroll and see that Mateo has graced us with a visit on the bonkers Plaza Saint-Hubert that I visited so often as a kid, mesmerized by all the weird, tacky stuff in the displays. Wow.
Lost it at the resale Simons bag
This tour of Plaza St-Hubert was perfect, hilarious, and on point. At the end, when Matteo ordered the pastries, and ended with a "ouais", it was PERFECT Québec "ouais" omg lol
Plaza St-Hubert was where everyone went for their prom or wedding dress, beauty supplies (especially wigs and nails), shoes, backpacks/purses/handbags and electronics back in the '90s and early 2000s. A lot of the (then) affordable children/family clothing stores, the area it's in and it's proximity to "little Chinatown no2" (nearby area that has dozens of Chinese and SE Asian grocery stores, restaurants and businesses) also meant that a lot of immigrant families went there for their weekly shopping. As a kid my family would go there almost every other week and it was always super busy!
At some point in the mid-2000s/early 2010s the plaza kinda went downhill but in the last decades lots of new small independent businesses have moved in - including some great bakeries, restaurants and coffee shops, the old overhead awning was replaced to what we see now (believe it or not, þhere was a lot of controversies when plans for the new/current awning were revealed lol) and more efforts have been put in to keep the streets cleaner, safer and greener as well as organizing more events.
As an adult I haven't gone there all that often anymore but I still have fond memories of the Plaza and it's still a really fun place (especially during the summer) when they have sidewalk sales and events. Walking through it now gives me both childhood nostagia/memories and excitement at discovering new local businesses sandwiched between those that have been there before even I was born.
Edit: also that Portuguese bakery they went to (Rosario) is A+. I love that place!
I live in Montreal, almost 3 blocks from St-Hubert Plaza. LOVE Tranna and we don't see enough of her, so was happy to see this. Hope you come back and make more fun Montreal vids, bring Nick ;)
I can just imagine the antics they'll go through as they walk through Little Italy, the Village or weigh in on the Fairmount vs St-Viateur bagels debate. 😂
IM vaery familiar with the eveolution of St Catherine street and the gay village near Papineau metro station, but no idea where "Plaza Saint Hubert"
@@ZakhadWOW it's in the Rosemont-Petite-Patrie neighbourhood, close to Jean-Talon metro. It's a strip of 400 businesses on the St-Hubert street that spans from Jean-Talon to Bellechasse and it's been around for decades already.
Matteo's audible gasp at the sight of a Portuguese bakery
Matteo! ❤ your gasp at a Portuguese bakery brought me so much joy and made me feel like I belonged to something special if only for 5 seconds. 💕💕💕💕💕
A mood for sure
Props to Chris' concise editing: Matteo saw, he gasped, he crossed a street, he sampled.
That's a GOOD bakery too. I can't vouch for how authentic their stuff since I'm not Portuguese myself but I will say the products I've tried are great. They're even selling their egg tarts at several grocery stores.
My response to all bakeries
Love these videos Mateo, so much fun!! 😊❤
I love hearing Matteo flex all the languages he can speak ❤😂 work it, you multilingual king!
He didn’t know bonne fete
I mean he said Je voutrais instead of voudrais, but work
The surprise Kathy Mitchell sighting 😂😭
Wow, Plaza St Hubert... I haven't been there in soooo long, and nothing has changed! lol the shopping bag from Simons for sale made me laugh!!
The bridal and prom, lingerie and a few specialty shops are remnants from the 90s Plaza St-Hubert. It was the go-to place for dresses. The 2000s and 2010s were dark times for the Plaza, a lot of shops closed. But lately, there's been a lot of efforts to attract new shops and bring fresh air to the Plaza. The bridal shops are the main survivors of the old Plaza because of their reputation : good quality and not that expensive.
Matteo is so cultured and charming. Being out of the States brings out the "Matteo Glow." Che bellísimo!
I kept thinking 90s was 20 years ago. It's not. It was 30 years ago 😭😭
Ha! Yesterday, I thought the 70s was 30 years ago, but no... I'm just old and still bad at math.
@@HazelwithaZ we are now decently closer to 2050, than 1990
Those lamps were very classic 90s McDonald’s vibes
Shhhhh… no one has to know!
Time flies
I can imagine Coco Peru on this street browsing 😂
Omg the trading spaces with the hay stapled on the walls and the painted fence 💀💀 and the homeowners walked in like wtf. 🤣
I was waiting for them to walk into the medieval store!!
That's where I got my prom dress from!
OMG This warmed my heart 😭 I love Tranna and I used to live right next to the Plaza! I'm so sad I missed Mateo's shows i. Montréal. Fun fact; The reason why there are still bridal and prom-like dress shops is they are remnants of an era where the Plaza was THE place for fashion ! My mother, in the 80s, drove all the way up to Montréal to buy fabric on the plaza for her wedding dress because it was THE place to go! I was also supposed to get my prom dress there in 2009 but all the girls were going to the Plaza so I chickened out and went somewhere else because I wanted to be ''not like other girls'' because, you know, the worst thing that can happen when you're 18 is ending up with the same prom dress as another girl 😂
“Ver-Sayce” ❤
I want just a channel of you both walking around malls and pointing things out. This was amazing lmao
They gotta wear Ray Bans like the Blues Brothers, though.
I vacationed several times in Montreal in the 1990s, and I loved it because it reminded me of the '60s and '70s!
When Mateo says "Swag city, I had no swag whatsoever". All I hear is Nick going "Had?! You think you have it now?!" *Gay sass*
I read that in Nick's voice
Omg Nickels... when I was a kid, we would go there and there was "Celine's chocolate cake" that I would get every time because I actually thought Celine Dion made the cake.
The beauty of a kid's mind.
Ginette Reno is absolutely rang my ear as a drag version of Jean Reno and now I want to see that
You gotta check her out! She's a funny, amazing woman and has an incredible voice. René Angelil (Céline Dion's husband) was her manager before knowing Céline and he wanted to make her big in the States, but Ginette refused; she just wanted her career in Québec.
This was so fun to watch you two stroll the shops together! ❤
Been to Montreal dozens of times and never heard of this street. Thanks for sharing Tranna and Matteo. Looks like so much fun.
St Hubert, maybe you just don’t recognize the pronunciation, Tranna wintour is pronouncing it the French way: santyoo bear, it obviously doesn’t sound similar in English. But in English we pronounce many streets the French way in Montreal.
You have the best tours and guests! I think my best living was in the 90's, still young and active, full of energy, my daughter growing up, I can't complain!
Thanks for the stroll!
I smile the entire way through every Matteo video...
Omg... Are we making the pancakes or are we going to f**k them 😅
The best thing about living in Burlington VT is being 2 hours from Montreal. Hands down my favorite city.
I just clicked play but already know this is gonna be gooood! (especially since I live right next to la plaza)
Quebec represent! 😂
Thank you for introducing me to Tranna! What a gem.
Thank you so much for this!! I just moved across the country and kinda really enjoyed the walk in my home city ❤😸
Matteo being a lamb makes my heart smile lmao
i went there with my mom 2 weeks ago to window shop, walk around and just hang out and have coffee. it’s so much fun. shoutout to ginette reno!!!
La belle ville de Montréal ❤ 😊
Damn straight we wanna see more of Tranna Wintour 🤩😍🥰 YES!
Aah! Get those props and make that impromptu busking performance of Wicked happen 🖤💚
👠👠
I used to live near Plaza St-Hubert in the 1990s, and I can attest to the fact that it hardly changed since. Back then, it was almost exclusively bridal gowns, footwear and sewing supplies.
Matteo's excitement when they found a bakery
Plaza St Hubert of all places 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I love this! Hope you also visited the Jean Talon market!
3:26 I don't think she understood how revered Cathy is!
The reason there are so many bridal shops on St Hubert is because it used to be the garment district. Once upon a time Montreal was a textile manufacturing center, and St Hubert is what remains of it. It’s why the street is also full of fabric stores and sewing machine stores. It’s where I get my vintage Singer serviced by an old portuguese man who keeps complaining about how the model sucks. He’s great.
It’s so awful that you can’t help but love those few blocks of the most random stores . I bought my prom dress there😅
I grew up near this street when it used to be "nice" and mainstream stores existed. Now, not so much...so glad to see both of you...And yes Mateo, I also work at Michael's...Quebec version...
I only went to Plaza St. Hubert back in the day to go to Sam The Record Man. So…a very very long time ago. 😂
I was just there two weekends ago! Tranna's right, they're very friendly at that Hera Beauty.
THE SIMONS BAG i'm fucking dead
Tranna is hilarious! Saw her in Vancouver and was an instant fan
i just brought my mother to experience The Plaza for the first time this week!
DEAD. Welcome to MTL!!
This is where I got my prom dress in 2009 😂😂
Why are y'all on Biscayne blvd in Miami? This looks exactly like it. Next to bayside
BTW I got a chandelier and couple of laps in that lamp shop when I bought my condo 15 years ago :) and this plaza had very chic Italian furniture store, which I visited several times thinking - oh, when I will buy my own place that's where i will get my furniture!. But by that time the store was gone :(
OH, and all those Armenian jewelry stores? Also gone!
Very nice video! I loved that you spoke French. I love Tranna she is so quirky!
Loved this video and absolutely love Tranna! A perfect pair! Also, Ste Hubert is my fave area in Montreal to buy all my burlesque/ nightlife essentials!
Fun segment!
Any Olive Gardens in Montreal ? Please find a French Canadian Nick
No there is none :(
I did my fashion design diploma in montreal and further down this street is where i would buy all my fabric for projects!
Hahaha. Your turbo cooker is bussing over your regular videos now. So adorable 🌸
Worked on that street in the late 90s early 2000's 😂 the memories it's actually cleaner now then it was back then
I got a bridesmaid dress and shoes (dyed to match the dress) on this street. Thankfully that was ages ago...
I love Montreal! One of my fav city’s to visit.
The Simons bag being resold is a mood.
Interresting that you chose plaza St-Hubert. It's not as artsy or glamour that other streets but it definately has it's charm. A thing to note: north of Jean-Talon streets you have a lot of textile and fabric vendors. My mother always went there to buy fabric.
His Liza is gold.
Montreal is my favorite city!
Negative points for what you said about poutine, positive points for correct pronunciation of Montreal ❤
that wig is giving buffalo bill from the silence of the lambs
Please get a camera gimbal
Ahhh my old neighborhood!! Would’ve completely lost my mind had I seen you both casually strolling down la Plaza St-Hubert while eating my poutine at Nickels.
Mateo: OMG it’s Cathy Mitchell ! She’s our favourite informercial star !
Tranna: Okay
i love when you go exploring
There's still a Nickels at Jardins Dorval near the airport.
LOVE that place also.... when you continue north on Plaza St-Hubert you have tons of fabric stores, for those who like to make their own.... Also we have a gay bathhouse right on the street, actually it was near the Portuguese pastry store if I remember !!!!
Tranna!! Love her.
Tranna saying, “Yes you were!” to Matteo about being cool in HS was all I needed to hear today.
that bikini mannequin reminds me of Nick- when he won't go any further! (11:32)
surely rodrigo could rock anything, even lingerie
5:45 you should definitely buy that for Rodrigo 😆
12:08 lol, Matteo must have seen Norm Summerton’s famous poutine recipe on Your Mom’s House podcast
I walk this stretch almost everyday
SHE WAS SO FUCKING FUNNNNYUYYYYYY!!!!!!!
YOU WERE IN MONTREAL?? What post partum rock have i been under 😭
I love love love your videos! Background jazz music is too loud though, very distracting from the voices
I've been there. It's up near Little Italy!! You're in real Montreal, Matteo!
Lmao when was this filmed? Last week? 😂
I think that flaming hot cheetos dress has been there since at least 2010
So close to the Red Line, a donner restaurant! Kudos for your french! Although, might be an englo employee! ❤😊
I would ❤ to go shop at Saint Hubert. I miss the 90s. Love Natas
Not Beyonce being fashion forward 💀
Could not love this more. I will represent a big chunk of the views.
Tranada
I live in RosePatrie and will admit our arrondissement is not the most polished part of the city.
Matteo, you are great with your tongue.
En français that is 😂.
Great accent gurl ❤.
I'm still shocked that the person behind the counter actually responded to Matteo speaking french to them...
There was a wig shop where I went to college called OK Wig...do you want a great or nice wig, no, just an OK one!
YEAHHHH TRANNA OMG
Wow you were in Montreal!! I got married in 1996 and my wedding dress and the dresses for my bridal party all came from Plaza St.Hubert. It was better in those days.
I live in Montreal and I need to go back to Plaza St-Hubert..it is so funky!
