Summary:
Although poor quality audience recordings have circulated among fans for many years, presented here for the first time ever is a direct recording of Frank Zappa's early show on October 13, 1978 at The Capitol Theatre in Passaic, NJ. This night is notable not only for containing two of the most memorable performances of the 1978 World Tour, but this concert was also bass player Patrick O'hearn's debut gig with Zappa.
The concert contains a wide ranging selection of material both old and new and a good balance between Zappa's humorous social commentary songs and his more challenging instrumental compositions. It kicks off with a standout example of Zappa's seering guitar work on "Deathless Horsie," which would finally see release on his Shut Up & Play Your Guitar series several years later. In terms of outstanding solos, a highly improvised "City Of Tiny Lights" featuring Denny Walley in fantastic form on slide guitar, is certainly a highlight. The same can be said of is "Pound For A Brown On The Bus," which immediately follows. This serves as an extended showcase for Ed Mann on vibes, followed by electric piano and then synthesizer solos by Tommy Mars and Peter Wolf. Closing the set is a complete performance of the Apostrophe album classic "Yellow Snow Suite.
The two encores are also notable, beginning with a non-orchestral performance of "Strictly Genteel." This grand finale composition to "200 Motels" is followed by "Dinah Moe Hum." On this final encore Zappa adamantly insists on sing-a-long audience participation. When he notices a guy wearing a Rolling Stones t-shirt who is not joining in the fun, he specifically singles him out. So determined is Zappa to get this gentleman to sing along, that he vows to end the performance should he fail to participate! Following an unsuccessful second chance to engage said audience member, and true to his word, Zappa suddenly stops the performance and concludes the concert. - Hudba
Frank Zappa is the greatest composer of the 20th century!!!!!!
God damn right
Any century, besides writing the music he assembled numerous bands that traveled around the globe at an almost unstoppable pace,.
Rachmaninoff, Debussy, Miles Davis

John Zorn.
@@AllendeEtAl screw those guys
Every musician who ever worked with Frank Zappa was amazingly talented in their own right, and this video is a tribute not only to the man himself but also his band
Totally agree.
thin llizzy
Have to agree, this is an amazing ensemble, and they look like they are enjoying themselves.
They do indeed. Meanwhile, they are playing their collective asses off. Every Zappa alumni will say just that. Zappa was the shit!
I don't usually comment on people's profile pictures, but Deloused in the Comatorium is probably the greatest album of the 21st century
GREAT GOOOOGLY MOOOOGLY
Awesome
NOW GET UP AND POUUNCE
wondered how to spell it
I can't see....
woe is me
Indeed.
Hey!! I was at this show! Sometimes being old has its privileges.
do you have any Frank Zappa t shirts to sell ?
You are very lucky! I would pay anything to have been to this show or the one in Barcelona, Spain.
16 minutes and the camera man shows the drummer, one of the best drummers in the world, exactly ZERO times!!! Great work!
22 years old and Vinnie Colaiuta was already a phenomenal drummer.
and Dynamic Seal caller
22! Fuck! ,I got clothes older than him 😂
Kinda young, kinda wow

Love him or hate him Zappa was not only a highly accomplished musician and composer but he always recruited the best musicians to play along with him. These guys are tighter than tight despite all the ad-libbed moments.
He’s not everyone’s cup of tea but I’ve learned to embrace the weirdness 👌🏻
Nanook Rubs it Got to be one of the best ongoing blues kinda progressions. The Way he explains the Audience participation part always staying onbeat. Epic Shit
And my mama cried,YOU DON'T REALLY LOOK LIKE AN ESKIMO!
Love this version 👊
Nanuk a no no.
Why hasn’t this whole Concert been released in its Entirety it’s Fabulous!
this is just another example of the musical genius of Frank Zappa.... like it or not... if you don't like it...why are you here...??...lol
too true! also shows how incredible his band was at this time
+oakenshanks Frank was very classically trained and had a host of European composers from over the past 100 years that he studied ,absorbed from and emulated. He was indeed a genius. One might think he was acting when he got the directors baton out and waved it around, but he actually knew how to use it properly- how to lead an orchestra. And Frank actually wrote orchestra compositions quite well.
+Lia Lovely Frank started to write contemporary classical music at the age of 14, and said that he didn't write a rock 'n' roll song until he reached his early 20's !
Frank took about 2 semesters at a music school, got the gist of it and went on his own with his ideas of music composition; so basically self-taught.
He once described his early composing style as "getting as far out as possible with the slide rule" then said, "who cares about that stuff?" and got more involved with writing "rock 'n roll" songs. Obviously, he never abandoned his slide rule, owing to the impossible time signatures in many of his tunes.
Read his biography, no mention of classical training. He does mention many classical influences.
The arrangement, the hilarious and fantastically crafted lyrics, the unbelievable musicianship displayed from everyone on stage, what a fucking brilliant performance
This version is as equally as enjoyable as the original, I love the alternate lines "And my momma cried","You don't really look like an Eskimo" 😂
The musicianship is on another level in another galaxy; crazy good.
Why this masterpiece has this lack of views?! This suite is amazing!
People are blind ????? Maybe
How many times have you shared it?
Because today's folks live off Spacebook. Theyre so simple they cant figure out good craft when they hear it.
ssshh We're keeping it just for ourselves.
"Now what's a matter with you? Are you two ripped over there?" LMFAO! RIP Frank.
Too*
Well that's it. From now on, I'm going to pounce for an hour every day, then abuse a sausage patty with stolen margarine. There's just no other way.
This suite is one of my all-time favorites. I never understood why none of his bands ever seemed to play this after it's release (at least with all the segued songs) until this point.

Yeah it’s a shame it wasn’t played often. Ycdtosa vol 1 has the best live version, but the new cobo hall show from the overnite sensation box set is pretty good
5:40 I love zappa man! Haven't seen this done in a concert since 1972 with the dead but this time. This time it was like hoorah man!
Zappa does a gesture to replicate the Eskimo, and asks the crowd to join. The crowd does the gesture, except for a few people. So Zappa stops the music and asks "why aren't you two pouncing are you guys ripped?" And the camera goes to the crowd with all their hands up with the most doobies you could ever see!, when I watched this and saw all the smoke in the crowd I laughed the hardest I've ever laughed in a while! And I wanted to share the full Zappa experience with everyone man!
I just have to chime in here and state the obvious: This video is an absolute gem. Zappa never ceases to amaze me.
The execution of this show is so perfect it's unbelievable. The best of entertainment which is possible to achieve in a single show
I'm a major zappa head and was able to recognize everyone on sight watching this video, but never new this band had 2 bassists - Arthur Barrow and Patrick O'Hearn! Really cool!
@@HakanTunaMuzik Great to know! It's hard to imagine Barrow being "not up to scratch" considering his legendary status among other zappa alumni (it's hard to get a compliment from Thunes!!). That and the fact that he was also a clonemeister. Guess I'll have to read his book to find out more! Thanks for the reply!!
God bless you Frank
What a genius you were
One of my favorite clips
Only thing better would be you playing guitar! You left this world way too soon. Thank you for the music you left us with
Yeah, I wanted to hear Him wail during the Nanuuk rubs it part.👍🏾
Meu Deus! Quanta genialidade e criatividade! Absurdo!
I saw Zappa twice back in the seventies, pure genius.
Why am I enjoying this so much? 😩👌
all i can say is BRILLIANT!!!
"Audience participation, as you all know, is a very stupid thing to do"
Man, Zappa was so cool. Holy Jesus
Tight as a tight thing that's so very tight !!! The bass and drums on this are sublime and help drive the band way past warp speed with Frank at the controls. RIP Frank Zappa
Absolute geniuses
SUCH A GREAT MIND....R.I.P...FRANK.....MISSING YOU.!!
RIP, Frank😇🥰
What an incredible frontman!!! Far ahead of his time in my opinion. I was 6 years old when this came out, didn't listen to him until I was in my teens, got hooked after hearing the yellow snow ✌️
The "you can't do that on stage anymore, vol. 1" and this recording is a microcosm of how zappa' music progressed.
From Baltimore, Maryland baby...
What an absolute gem! RIP brother. You'll live forever.
Saw him perform this at knedworth england 1978 . Made me so proud to have seen this !
Shameful to put ads in this brilliant piece of music.
9;03.....the St Alphonso lick......with all the quick notes...is stunning
